Toshiba to sell memory business to Bain-led group for 2 trillion yen

0

The Japanese conglomerate will also be investing 350.5 billion yen into the memory business it is offloading to a Japanese government-backed consortium.
Japanese conglomerate Toshiba Corp has announced it is selling its memory-chip business to a Japanese government-backed consortium led by Bain Capital for 2 trillion yen.
The 142-year-old company had selected the Bain-led consortium as its preferred bidder back in June, which also includes the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan and the Development Bank of Japan.
The Kyodo News agency, citing unnamed sources, reported that the Bain-led group also includes South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, Apple, Dell, Kingston Technology, and Seagate Technology.
Toshiba said in a statement that it expects to close the deal „within days“ and that it had also agreed to invest 350.5 billion yen into its memory-chip unit, maintaining some ownership.
The sale of Toshiba Memory — which the company expects to complete by the end of March 2018 — will allow the company to make up for the losses it had suffered from its nuclear power business Westinghouse Electric.
Toshiba had suffered a $6.3 billion write-down due to rising costs at two Westinghouse nuclear projects in the US, wiping out shareholder equity and dragging the company to a full-year loss for the second year in a row.
In February, Toshiba chairman Shigenori Shiga accepted responsibility for the company’s financial woes and resigned.
The company filed for bankruptcy protection in the US in March to avoid posting negative net worth for a second year that would force it to be delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
The multiple postponements of Toshiba’s full-year earnings report prompted an automatic demotion to the second rung of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Toshiba also said in April that it was considering selling a portion or all of its Moorside development company NuGeneration, after France’s Engie, formerly known as GDF Suez, backed out of the nuclear project, selling its stake back to Toshiba for approximately £111 million.
It was also reported that Toshiba president Satoshi Tsunakawa would be taking a pay cut to help keep the company afloat.
In 2015, Toshiba delayed planned earnings releases twice as it reeled from a 150 billion yen accounting scandal where the company overstated its profits over the course of seven years.
Former Toshiba president Hisao Tanaka and his predecessor Norio Sasaki quit in the wake of the scandal, which was blamed on management’s overzealous pursuit of profit.
More than a year ago, as part of another major restructuring effort, Toshiba sold off its PC business and let go thousands of employees.
For the previous financial year ending March 31,2017, Toshiba posted a net loss of 965.7 billion yen, and also reported negative net worth of 552.9 billion yen.

The horrible natural disasters keep coming, folks. Regardless of what is causing them, one thing is certain — the victims need help. Thankfully, people and organizations seemingly have deep pockets this year when it comes to helping their fellow man. Heck, some companies have also offered complimentary products and services too.
The horrible natural disasters keep coming, folks. Regardless of what is causing them, one thing is certain — the victims need help. Thankfully, people and organizations seemingly have deep pockets this year when it comes to helping their fellow man. Heck, some companies have also offered complimentary products and services too.
One of the most recent tragedies is the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rocked Mexico. If you haven’t seen any footage, please know that it is bad. Like, really bad. Buildings have collapsed on people, including children, and the death toll is expected to climb very high. If you have any loved ones in the affected areas of Mexico, and you need to reach them to be sure they are safe, Microsoft has your back. It has enabled free calls using its Skype service.
„In light of the devastating earthquake that has taken place in Mexico — and the subsequent impact to the local communications infrastructure — domestic and international calls made via Skype to landlines and mobiles in the affected Mexico regions are free of charge until further notice. This is effective immediately; the list of area codes are below. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the earthquake. We hope this helps you reach loved ones, friends, and colleagues in Mexico,“ says The Skype Team.
The team shares the eligible area codes below.
If you are interested in taking advantage of the free calls, but have never used Skype before, do not panic. Simply follow the helpful instructions here after setting up an account.

Weekend soccer games called off after Mexico earthquake

0

Weekend soccer games called off as Mexican stadiums being used as relief centers after earthquake.
Mexico’s soccer federation has canceled all first-division games this weekend as stadiums are being used as relief centers after the country’s magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
The federation announced Wednesday that there would be no games in the 10th round of the Apertura tournament or any other professional competition, including the women’s league.
„All the clubs are doing their bit,“ Mexican league president Enrique Bonilla said in an interview on Fox Sports before the decision to cancel all matches was announced. „We would like to bring people a moment of joy, but it is a more complex decision, and we need to have all the information from authorities.“
The postponed league games will be played in mid-October, including the derby between Chivas and America.

Toddler hit in face by foul ball at New York Yankees game

0

A young New York Yankees fan was injured after they were hit by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
A young New York Yankees fan was injured after being hit by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The ball was hit down the third-base line off the bat of Todd Frazier and stuck the little girl in the stands. The toddler was hit in the face, a source told ESPN’s Andrew Marchand. She was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. The toddler was carried out of the stands, given first aid and taken to a hospital. The protective netting at Yankee Stadium ends at the home plate side of each dugout, and the team said in July it is „seriously exploring“ extending the netting for 2018. Frazier knelt down and covered his head, and many other Yankees and Twins watched in stunned silence as the fan was helped. Here’s video showing the reaction on the field:The Yankees said they weren’t allowed to provide more information on his condition, though they provided a statement:“The child who was struck with a batted ball today was given first aid at the ballpark and is receiving medical attention at an area hospital. The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA, prevents the team from giving more information. We will have no further comment at this time.“The game was briefly halted while crews helped the young girl.

The Latest: Protesters at mall say 'no justice, no profits'

The Latest: Protesters at mall say ’no justice, no profits‘
The Latest on protests in St. Louis over a judge’s acquittal of a former white police officer who fatally shot a black suspect (all times local):
6:35 p.m.
Marching, chanting protesters near an upscale suburban mall outside St. Louis briefly moved toward an interstate on-ramp, but police blocked the entrance and pushed the demonstrators back.
Wednesday marks the fifth day of protests since last week’s acquittal of white former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley for the fatal shooting of 24-year-old black drug suspect Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011.
A couple hundred protesters gathered near the St. Louis Galleria in Richmond Heights and blocked traffic. The protesters say their strategy includes disrupting business and causing discomfort to parts of the community that might not otherwise feel affected by the verdict.
The marchers‘ chants included „no justice, no profits,“ “Whose streets? Our streets!“ and „indict, convict, send those killer cops to jail.“

6 p.m.
Protesters trying to bring attention to the not-guilty verdict issued last week in the trial of a white former St. Louis police officer charged in the shooting death of a black suspect have blocked an intersection to impede motorists from reaching an upscale suburban mall.
The demonstration had been announced for Shaw Park in the suburb of Clayton, and about 100 people gathered there. But they quickly left and a group formed at the St. Louis Galleria in nearby Richmond Heights.
Clayton had been preparing for the protests. St. Louis Public Radio reports the county offices and rec center closed early and evening court was called off. Some businesses posted signs saying they were closing early.
Protesters say their strategy includes disrupting business and causing discomfort to parts of the community that might not otherwise feel affected by the verdict.

4 p.m.
Officials with the St. Louis Police Officers‘ Association say vandals broke windows and spray-painted graffiti at the union’s headquarters.
The vandals also damaged a private security vehicle between late Monday and early Tuesday.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports union leaders responded with a message on plywood covering the broken windows: „We’re open, We won’t be defeated.“
The vandalism comes after days of protests following the acquittal of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley in the 2011 shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith.
Union business manager Jeff Roorda says the organization interpreted some of the graffiti left behind as threatening Stockley’s safety. He says stories about the union collecting food and water for officers preceded that vandalism.
Roorda says the vandals have „declared war on the police,“ noting 32 officers were injured in the protests.

2:15 p.m.
Police in Wisconsin are trying to find whoever spray-painted a message on the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial calling for justice for a black man killed by a white former St. Louis police officer.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice issued a news release Wednesday saying someone spray-painted „#Justice4Anthony Smith“ on the memorial outside the state Capitol on Saturday.
Jason Stockley shot and killed Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. A judge acquitted Stockley of first-degree murder on Friday, prompting protests.
The Wisconsin Capitol Police are investigating the graffiti. Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel called the perpetrator a „coward“ in the Department of Justice news release.
The memorial lists the names of 273 police officers killed in the line of duty.

1:30 p.m.
St. Louis police say they’re investigating whether an officer responded to a protester’s Facebook post with a meme equating the Black Lives Matter movement with domestic terrorism.
City resident Lisa Clancy said Wednesday she reported the meme to police after it was posted in response to her reflections about participating in a Friday night protest in the Central West End district.
Protests have followed last week’s acquittal of white former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley for the fatal shooting of 24-year-old black drug suspect Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011.
Clancy said her Facebook posting prompted „hateful“ responses Saturday including the anti-Black Lives Matter meme. She said a Google search suggested the poster could be a police officer.
St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said during a news conference Tuesday that she disagreed with the meme’s message.
———
This update has been corrected to show that Clancy’s comments were made on Wednesday, not Tuesday.
———
9:30 a.m.
Another demonstration is expected in suburban St. Louis to protest a judge’s acquittal of a white former police officer who fatally shot a black suspect.
Protesters say they will take to the streets again Wednesday to dispute the ruling Friday that found Jason Stockley not guilty of first-degree murder in the 2011 fatal shooting of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith.
Demonstrations since Friday have targeted affluent areas in and around St. Louis and places known to be economic drivers. Organizers say the goal is to draw attention to their cause by disrupting business. There were no protests Tuesday.
The protests have been largely nonviolent, but there was some vandalism over the weekend after peaceful organized protests ended.

The first category 4 storm to strike Puerto Rico in 85 years, slamming ashore around sunrise. We are back here on the northern side of San Juan here. I can only imagine what went down when this thing made landfall on the southeast corner of this island. The eye getting closer and closer to us. The eye wall scraping the northern beaches there. Reporter: Roofs peeled from buildings. Debris flying. Structures collapsing. Up to 30 inches of rain in some areas, engulfing whole neighbors. Michelle torres using everything she can to keep the water out. The wind howled and screeched. The doors rattled. Trump: New ObamaCare repeal does cover pre-existing conditions

0

President Trump argued Wednesday that the latest Republican effort to repeal much of ObamaCare does include coverage of pre-existing conditions.
President Trump argued Wednesday that the latest Republican effort to repeal much of ObamaCare does include coverage of pre-existing conditions. Bill Cassidy Lindsey Graham
The comment from the president comes after late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel slammed Cassidy for failing “the Jimmy Kimmel test,” a phrase Cassidy created himself during previous efforts to repeal ObamaCare. The senator in May said any effort to repeal the healthcare law must pass “the Jimmy Kimmel test,” a nod to Kimmel’s plea about pre-existing conditions as he revealed that his son was born with a heart murmur.
The new legislation would repeal much of ObamaCare by converting funds into block grants to states. It would also enable states to waive the rule within ObamaCare that protects individuals with pre-existing conditions from being charged higher premiums because of the illness.
“Your child with the pre-existing condition will get the care he needs if — and only if — his father is Jimmy Kimmel. Otherwise, you might be screwed,” Kimmel said Wednesday night.
“Not only did Bill Cassidy fail the Jimmy Kimmel test, he failed the Bill Cassidy test. He failed his own test,” he said.
