Bitcoin miner NiceHash reports hack, theft of its 'wallet'

0

NiceHash said Thursday that it had stopped operations for 24 hours and was working to verify how many bitcoins were taken.
TOKYO – The Slovenian-based bitcoin miner NiceHash says it is investigating a security breach and the possible theft of tens of millions of dollars’ worth of bitcoins, as meanwhile the value of the virtual currency has soared to a new record high.
NiceHash said Thursday in a statement posted on its website that it had stopped operations for 24 hours and was working to verify how many bitcoins were taken.
There was no immediate response from NiceHash to an emailed request for more details. Unconfirmed reports said more than 4,000 bitcoins were missing valued at more than $60 million.
“The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are cooperating with them as a matter of urgency,” it said.
The statement urged users to change their online passwords.
Troubles with the website over the past day or so drew alarm and complaints, with many bitcoin owners posting panicked comments on NiceHash’s social media accounts.
The price of bitcoin has surged to over $14,100.74, gaining $1,000 in less than a day, according to coindesk, a website that monitors the price. That compares with a value below $1,000 at the beginning of the year.
Bitcoin is the world’s most popular digital currency. Such currencies are not tied to a bank or government and allow users to spend money anonymously. They are basically lines of computer code that are digitally signed each time they are traded. Miners of bitcoins and other virtual currencies help keep the systems honest by putting computer power into a blockchain, a global running tally of every transaction that prevents cheaters from spending the same digital coin twice.
NiceHash is a cryptocurrency mining application that lends computer power to verify bitcoin users’ transactions.
Online security is a vital concern for such dealings.
In Japan, following the failure of a bitcoin exchange called Mt. Gox, new laws were enacted to regulate bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. Mt. Gox shut down in February 2014, saying it lost about 850,000 bitcoins, possibly to hackers.

France's Emmanuel Macron visits Qatar amid regional boycott

0

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Qatar for a one-day trip to the small Gulf country as it faces a boycott by some of its Arab neighbours.
France’s President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Qatar for a one-day trip to the small Gulf country as it faces a boycott by some of its Arab neighbours.
Mr Macron travelled to the al Udeid air base, home to some 10,000 American troops and the forward headquarters of the US military’s central command.
France also has a contingent of soldiers at the base, which is crucial to the ongoing fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria and to the war in Afghanistan.
Mr Macron smiled and shook hands with the French and American soldiers who greeted him at the base before walking into a meeting with the base’s top commanders.
Speaking to coalition soldiers, he said the next few months will determine the outcome of the war against the IS group in Iraq in Syria.
« This military win does not signify the end of the operations and the end of our battle because first we need to stabilise and win peace in Iraq and Syria, » he told troops.
« Next spring is decisive in the situation in Iraq. »
Mr Macron also stressed in his remarks at the air base that France wants to avoid partition in Syria and « avoid the domination of certain international elements whose interests contradict peace ».
The French president later will hold talks with Qatar’s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Mr Macron is travelling with his foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who in 2015 as defence minister helped negotiate a multi-billion dollar deal with Qatar to buy 24 Rafale fighter jets.
Qatar may announce during Mr Macron’s visit that it will purchase up to 12 more of the French-made Dassault Rafale jets.
Mr Macron’s visit comes just days after a Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in Kuwait failed to bring the stand-off any closer to a resolution in the dispute engulfing Qatar.
In June, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut relations with Qatar over allegations it supports extremists and has too-close relations with Iran.
Qatar has long denied supporting extremists and shares a massive offshore natural gas field with Tehran.

Literatur: Sams und Paul Maar feiern mit Weihnachtssalat

0

Chattermill raises £600K to use ‘deep learning’ to help companies make sense of customer feedback

Chattermill, a London-based startup that uses ‘deep learning’ to help companies make better sense of customer feedback, has raised £600,000 in seed funding. Backing comes from Entrepreneur First — Chattermill is an alumni of the company builder — and Avonmore Developments, along with a number of angel investors, including Jeff Kelisky, CEO of Seedrs.
Founded in 2015 by friends Mikhail Dubov and Dmitry Isupov, Chattermill is one of a number of startups that are tackling the problem of how to sift through and respond to customer feedback and across multiple channels. With that data growing exponentially, the company is employing deep learning to help do the job in, arguably, a much more scalable and potentially more accurate way.
“We help companies understand and improve their customer experience: we give companies insight that helps them craft better products and services,” Dubov, Chattermill’s CEO, tells me. “Companies with best in class customer experience ultimately have more loyal customers and find it easier acquiring them in the first place. Customer feedback is the best data to understand customer experience and while most companies have a lot of customer feedback, few have the tools to extract insight from it”.
He says the startup’s solution is to apply the latest deep learning techniques to analyse customer feedback in a way that is tailored for each company. “In addition to this we provide an analytics dashboard and automated alerts that make it very easy to take action on the insight across the business,” he says.
Specifically, Chattermill collates all feedback channels in one place and then “builds a customised deep learning model to extract easily actionable insight”. It can then measure sentiment to see how customers are feeling about each part of the overall experience, from design of an app down to speed of delivery and attitude of customer care agents.
In terms of how it collects customer feedback data in the first place, Chattermill integrates many standard tools used for soliciting and monitoring customer feedback and sentiment, such as SurveyMonkey, Zendesk, TypeForm or Salesforce, in addition to aggregating feedback from Net Promoter Score surveys, reviews, support tickets and social media.
The ten-person Chattermill team is currently working with customers across sectors that include, fintech, e-commerce, travel and gaming. “We work with consumer businesses that have a large customer base across industries,” says Dubov. “Notable examples are Transferwise, HelloFresh and Just Eat. Within these companies we work with the product, customer service and customer experience teams”.

Australia lawmakers approve same-sex marriage

Gay couples will be able to legally marry in Australia after a same-sex marriage bill sailed through parliament Thursday, ending decades of political wrangling.
Gay couples will be able to legally marry in Australia after a same-sex marriage bill sailed through parliament Thursday, ending decades of political wrangling.
There were loud cheers, hugs and sustained clapping in the 150-seat lower House of Representatives when all but four MPs voted in support of marriage equality, after the upper house Senate passed the bill 43-12 last week.
« What a day for love, for equality, for respect! Australia has done it, » Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the House.
« Every Australian had their say and they said it is fair, get on with it! »
The historic reforms will commence on Saturday, when same-sex couples can a lodge a notice to marry. They will then have to wait a month before tying the knot.
Labor opposition leader Bill Shorten hailed the passing of the bill as a uniting moment for Australia, adding: « Now is the time for healing.
« A time to build, a time to love, and is now at last a time for marriage equality, » he said.
Same-sex marriage campaigners converged outside parliament in the nation’s capital Canberra to celebrate the historic occasion, which sees Australia join more than 20 other countries in recognising such unions.
« We came, we saw, and love finally conquered, » co-chair of the Equality Campaign Alex Greenwich told reporters.

SEAN DAVEY, AFP
« We thank all Australians for their support for saying yes, we thank all those who have campaigned for many years, for over 10 years, for fairness and equality. »
The bill was introduced in parliament by the conservative government after Australians last month endorsed the reforms in a controversial voluntary postal vote.
Nearly 80 percent of eligible voters took part in the poll, and almost 62 percent of the 12.7 million people who participated chose « yes » on their ballots.
The vote had been called by Turnbull, a moderate who backed gay marriage, in the face of opposition from hardliners who refused to back a national plebiscite on the issue.
It was opposed by proponents of same-sex marriage, who wanted direct legislative action and argued a poll would expose gay people and their families to hate speech.
Just under five million people voted « no », with conservative politicians using their rejection as a catalyst to push for religious exemptions to be included in the bill.
But after lengthy debate, both houses of parliament knocked back any religious freedom amendments.
Leading « no » campaigner Lyle Shelton said it was « deeply disappointing » day.
« The Australian people were promised that their freedom of speech, freedom of religion and parental rights would be protected in any same-sex marriage legislation, and this has not happened, » he said.
– Weddings early next year –
The House vote took place on the last sitting day of parliament for the year, with more than 100 MPs speaking on the bill this week. Queues of people lined up to watch the debate from the public gallery, with some dancing and cheering.
In moving scenes, the entire parliament burst into song after the bill passed, belting out the lyrics to the « I Am Australian » song: « We are one, but we are many; And from all the lands on earth we come; We’ll share a dream and sing with one voice; ‘I am, you are, we are Australian’. »
Several parliamentarians who supported the changes wore rainbow-coloured socks or ties
SEAN DAVEY, AFP
Several parliamentarians who supported the changes wore rainbow-coloured socks or ties, including Warren Entsch, described in local media as a « fiercely heterosexual… crocodile-farming, bull-catching Liberal ».
MPs have paid tribute to Entsch over the pass few weeks for his efforts, with the veteran Liberal MP speaking passionately about his « very lonely » journey in support of equal rights on the conservative side of politics.
« This bill will take from no-one; it simply makes our nation a kinder and a fairer place, » Entsch told parliament this week.
One highly anticipated wedding will be the Liberal Party’s Tim Wilson, who proposed to his partner Ryan Bolger while speaking on gay marriage on the floor of the House earlier this week.
Same-sex marriage is now recognised in more than 20 countries, of which 16 are in Europe. It was most recently authorised on Tuesday by Austria’s top court by 2019 at the latest.

'Established fact': North Korea says nuclear war on Korean Peninsula inevitable

0

Pyongyang says outbreak of war inevitable.
A nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula is inevitable because of threatening military drills by South Korea and the United States, North Korea’s foreign ministry said in comments carried by the official Korean Central News Agency late Wednesday.
The foreign ministry said the military exercises involving hundreds of South Korean and U. S warplanes made the outbreak of war an « established fact. » It also blamed high-ranking U. S. officials, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, for « bellicose remarks. »
Pompeo said Saturday that U. S. intelligence agencies believe North Korean leader Kim Jong Un doesn’t have a good idea about how tenuous his situation is domestically and internationally as he pushes ahead with North Kore’s nuclear weapons program.
« We do not wish for a war but shall not hide from it, and should the U. S. miscalculate our patience and light the fuse for a nuclear war, we will surely make the U. S. dearly pay the consequences with our mighty nuclear force which we have consistently strengthened, » North Korea, which regularly threatens the U. S. and its allies, said.
The comments were consistent with the tone of Pyongyang’s previous confrontational remarks and statements condemning Washington and Seoul.
South Korea’s military said the drills — a Guam-based bomber simulated land strikes at a field near South Korea’s eastern coast — « displayed the allies’ strong intent and ability to punish North Korea when threatened by nuclear weapons and missiles. »
Flyovers have become an increasingly familiar show of force to North Korea, which after three intercontinental ballistic missile tests and six nuclear tests has moved closer toward building a nuclear arsenal that could viably target the U. S. mainland.

We Now Have 100,000 Players Wanting Disney to Revoke EA's Star Wars License

0

There is a viral petition out there that wants Disney to take back its Star Wars license from Battlefront 2 developers EA.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is without a doubt the most controversial game ever released due to the greed of Electronic Arts taking over their understanding of consumer behavior. If you are one of the players enjoying this game then congratulations, you’re amongst the small minority! It is important to understand that the game is undergoing changes because the fans had finally had enough of the exploitive nature of EA.
The outrage has been unprecedented with petitions coming forward demanding Disney to revoke EA’s Star Wars License.
Amidst the chaos, EA faced an 8.5% drop in stocks resulting in a loss of US$ 3.1 billion with a further 5% drop making things even worse. But EA it seems is turning a blind eye to this and adamant about micro-transactions as the way forward.
EA CFO, Blake Jorgensen spoke to the media defending the pay-to-win mechanics of the game and claiming that EA wishes to create games with long-term gaming possibilities. This was not well received by the fans and saw Jorgensen’s statement as a slap on their face.
Meanwhile, Disney has been forced to intervene, thus, the micro-transactions went offline temporarily. The fans have been quite vocal wanting Disney to end all deals with EA and give this platform to studios who have actually given the gamers their undivided attention and incorporated in their games all systems aimed at fair play and even distribution and opportunities. The viral petition wanting Disney to revoke EA’s Star Wars license now sits with over a 100,000 signatures.
The fans want other studios such as CD Projekt Red or Insomniac Games to be given an opportunity and license to remove all problems created by giving Star Wars license to EA. Whether this will actually take place is still left to speculation. However, a mutual consensus developed is that if Disney sticks with EA, it will be years before an improvement in the Star Wars video game series is made.

More than $60 million worth of bitcoin potentially stolen after hack on cryptocurrency site

0

Users highlighted the cyber breach on Reddit and Twitter Wednesday, with some saying they could lose hundreds of dollars worth of bitcoin.
Hackers may have gotten away with $60 million worth of bitcoin after a cyber attack hit the cryptocurrency mining platform NiceHash. Users highlighted the cyber breach on Reddit and Twitter Wednesday, with some saying they could lose hundreds of dollars.
NiceHash lets people offer computing capacity for bitcoin miners to mine digital currencies. Cryptocurrency miners work out complex mathematical equations to add cryptocurrency transactions to decentralized public ledgers called blockchains.
The mining marketplace initially said its service was undergoing « maintenance »on Twitter, later adding it was « working hard » to resolve issues affecting the site.
NiceHash said in a statement it was « investigating the nature of the incident, » and that it would close down its site for a day.
« We are working to verify the precise number of BTC (bitcoin) taken, » the company said. « Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days. In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency. »
While NiceHash was unable to specify how much bitcoin had been stolen, users have pointed to a bitcoin wallet which holds 4,736.42 bitcoins — equivalent to $68 million.
Andrej P. Škraba, head of marketing at the firm, confirmed to news agency Reuters that around 4,700 bitcoins — worth roughly $68 million at current prices — were lost in the hack.
CNBC reached out to NiceHash Chief Executive Marko Kobal for comment but he was not available at the time of publication.
This wouldn’t be the first time people have lost millions in cryptocurrency. In November, millions of dollars worth of Ethereum were « accidentally » frozen on the cryptocurrency wallet provider Parity after a user « suicided » the wallet, deleting its code and freezing all ether tokens contained within.
