Xavier: Im Bahnverkehr herrscht Chaos

0

The Latest on the mass shooting in Las Vegas (all times local):
LAS VEGAS (AP) – The Latest on the mass shooting in Las Vegas (all times local):
7 p.m.
The off-duty Las Vegas police officer who died when a gunman opened fire from a hotel on an open-air music festival was remembered as a man with a good sense of humor who loved his family.
Charleston Hartfield’s widow, Veronica, and their son and daughter, were surrounded by several hundred people during a candlelight memorial Thursday following his death on Sunday. He was 34.
Hartfield was a youth mentor, football coach, and an instructor in department’s body camera deployment program.
He was also remembered as a 16-year military veteran who served in the U. S. Army in Iraq.
His close friend, Officer Grant Riley, said he also was the author of a book titled “Memoirs of Public Servant.”
___
6:40 p.m.
Las Vegas police say they have located a car they were looking for as part of the investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in modern U. S. history.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says Thursday night on Twitter that the red Hyundai Tucson was found after police executed a search warrant at a home in Reno owned by the shooter, Stephen Paddock. Police did not immediately provide any other details.
The attack on Sunday killed 58 and injured nearly 500 people at a country music concert on the Las Vegas Strip.
Police had searched the Reno home on Tuesday and found guns and ammunition. Paddock had lived in the home with his girlfriend, Marilou Danley.
Investigators are still trying to determine what could have led Paddock to open fire from his high-rise hotel room before killing himself.
____
5:45 p.m.
An Illinois man has installed 58 white crosses on the Las Vegas Strip to honor the victims of Sunday’s mass shooting.
Greg Zanis drove nearly 2,000 miles from the Chicago area to put up the crosses Thursday afternoon.
The 66-year-old retired carpenter is known for installing the markers at other mass killings, including the Columbine and Sandy Hook school shootings and Orlando nightclub massacre.
Zanis says he’s made more than 20,000 crosses after making his first 20 years ago when his father-in-law was killed.
He plans to keep the tribute up for 40 days before giving the crosses to the families of the victims.

An executive casino host described Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock as an analytical gambler who would try to identify video poker machines most likely to provide big payoffs.
Host John Weinreich at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, Nevada, said Paddock would sit for hours, placing bets of $100 or more, rarely interacting with anyone but always conscious of his surroundings and who was winning.
Weinreich said Paddock’s girlfriend Marilou Danley once worked at the casino and initially got on Paddock’s good side by leading him to a machine where someone had lost tens of thousands of dollars.
Many gamblers falsely believe such machines are more likely to pay off.
Weinreich called Danley a “super sweet lady” and said he later learned she had taken off with Paddock.
___
4:30 p.m.
A former executive casino host at the Atlantis Casino Resort and Spa in Reno, Nevada, where Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock frequently gambled, says Paddock had a “god complex” and expected quick service no matter how busy employees were.
Host John Weinreich says Paddock was a frequent but not daily visitor to the high-limit area, where attendants stand behind a desk and a platter of food is available to gamblers.
Weinreich says Paddock liked “everybody to think that he was the guy. He didn’t boast about anything he had or anything. It was just his demeanor. It was like, ‘I’m here. Don’t cross me. Don’t look at me too long.'”
Paddock was known to stare at other people. One high roller told Weinreich that she thought Paddock was creepy.
___
2:25 p.m.
Investigators are looking into whether gunman Stephen Paddock scoped out bigger music festivals in Las Vegas and Chicago and possibly Boston’s Fenway Park before setting up his casino sniper’s perch.
Authorities reconstructing Paddock’s movements say he booked rooms overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago in August and the Life Is Beautiful show near the Vegas Strip in late September.
It was not clear if he contemplated massacres at those sites.
Investigators looking into Paddock also came across mention of Fenway Park.
Boston police Lt. Detective Mike McCarthy provided no further details.
___
2:10 p.m.
A U. S. official says investigators are looking into the possibility the Las Vegas shooter planned additional attacks, including a car bombing.
The official stressed the information was preliminary and investigators haven’t uncovered any solid evidence yet.
The official, who was briefed Thursday by federal law enforcement officials, wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo says it appeared Stephen Paddock had planned to survive Sunday’s attack and had an escape plan.
Lombardo said Paddock had 1,600 rounds of ammunition in his car, along with fertilizer that can be used to make explosives and 50 pounds of Tannerite, an explosive substance.
Paddock killed himself after shooting into a concert crowd, killing 58 and wounding nearly 500.

Authorities say they are beefing up security for Sunday’s Chicago Marathon following reports the Las Vegas shooter booked a Chicago hotel room during the weekend of a major music festival held across the street.
Chicago Police Bureau of Organized Crime Chief Anthony Riccio said Thursday that there would be “significantly” more undercover officers working the marathon than in years past.
A law enforcement official says Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock booked a room at Chicago’s downtown Blackstone Hotel in August.
A spokeswoman for the Blackstone Hotel, Emmy Carragher, says a person with the name Stephen Paddock reserved a room but never checked in.
The hotel overlooks Grant Park where the Lollapalooza festival is held each year and is attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
Riccio says the undercover officers assigned to the marathon “are going to be intermingling with the crowd, they’re going to be around runners, they’re going to be at the finish line, they’re going to be at the start line.”

A Chicago hotel where a law enforcement official says Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock booked a room in August during a music festival says no one by that name stayed at the hotel.
A spokeswoman for the Blackstone Hotel in a brief written statement Thursday did not address whether Paddock reserved a room but never checked in.
Paddock opened fire Sunday on a country music concert from a Las Vegas hotel room and killed 58 people.
The downtown Chicago hotel overlooks Grant Park where the Lollapalooza festival is held each year. Hundreds of thousands of people attend. The hotel spokeswoman, Emmy Carragher, said in the emailed statement that the hotel “is cooperating with the authorities.”
A law enforcement official said earlier Thursday that Paddock had booked a room at the Blackstone Hotel. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke only on condition of anonymity after being briefed on the investigation.
Paddock’s booking at the hotel was first reported by TMZ.
___
10:20 a.m.
Boston’s police commissioner says he will contact federal investigators about a report that the Las Vegas shooter researched locations in Boston.
But William Evans said Thursday he could not confirm the report and had not been briefed on the matter.
A law enforcement official says Stephen Paddock booked a room at a Chicago hotel that overlooked a park where a music festival was held in August, but there’s no indication he went there.
NBC News reported that Paddock also researched Boston.
Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker also says he’s aware of the reports but could not discuss them because of the ongoing investigation into the mass shooting.
Baker adds that police officials based in Boston are “fully plugged in” to the investigation and are in contact with Las Vegas authorities.
___
7:53 a.m.
A full two months before he opened fire on a country music concert in Las Vegas from a 32nd-floor room of a hotel and killed 58 people, Stephen Paddock booked a room at a Chicago hotel that overlooks a park where a major music festival was held that weekend, a law enforcement official said Thursday.
The official said that law enforcement found no evidence that Paddock ever came to Chicago during the weekend of Lollapalooza – a music festival that attracts hundreds of thousands of people. The official, who was not authorized to discuss the investigation of Paddock’s movements, spoke only on condition of anonymity after being briefed on the investigation.
The Blackstone Hotel, where Paddock made the reservations, overlooks the main stage and other stages at Grant Park where the music festival is held every year.
Paddock’s booking of the hotel room, first reported by TMZ, comes as investigators, trying to determine a motive for the Las Vegas shooting, have been trying to track Paddock’s movements in the days before he opened fire from the Mandalay Bay casino resort on Sunday night.

___
12:07 a.m.
Those seeking to know the motive of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock have had little more to chase than hints and shadows.
Unlike many other mass killers, Paddock led such a private life that no one seemed to know him well, and those who did had no sense he was capable of gunning down 58 people and injuring hundreds more at a country music festival before killing himself.
FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said he was surprised Paddock had provided so few clues, and that has proved challenging.
Clark County Sheriff did share on Wednesday night said Paddock had rented an apartment in another high-rise above another music festival a week earlier, though he could not say why.
And he said he felt it was unlikely Paddock could have pulled off the elaborate plan alone, though investigators have no idea who may have helped him.

Cam Newton of Carolina Panthers apologizes for response to female reporter

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said Thursday night that, “After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women,” a day after he made light of a female reporter for asking a serious football question.
Newton said it was not his intention to be disrespectful.
“If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you,” he said in a video message posted to his Twitter account.
“I’m a man who tries to be a positive role model in my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others. And I take ownership to everything that comes with that. And what I did was extremely unacceptable.”

Panthers coach Ron Rivera addressed Cam Newton laughing at and making light of a female reporter’s question, saying Thursday that the quarterback “made a mistake.”
Cam Newton’s comments to a female reporter have cost him a sponsorship, as Dannon, maker of the Oikos yogurt brand, said in a statement that it will “no longer work with him.”
Charlotte Observer beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton during Wednesday’s media conference about wide receiver Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of routes and whether Newton got enjoyment out of that.
Newton laughed and responded, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes like it’s funny.”
In his video statement Thursday night, Newton noted that he has two daughters.
“At their age, I try to instill to them that they can do and be anything that they want to be. The fact that during this whole process I’ve already lost sponsors and countless fans, I realize that the joke is really on me, and I have learned a valuable lesson from this,” he said. “And to the young people who see this, I hope that you learn something from this as well: Don’t be like me, be better than me.
“To the reporters, to the journalists, to the moms, supermoms, to the daughters, the sisters and the women all around the world, I sincerely apologize and hope that you can find the kindness in your heart to forgive me. Thank you.”
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Thursday that Newton “made a mistake” with his response to Rodrigue.
“I understand he had a conversation where he pretty much said he shouldn’t have said what he said,” Rivera said. “As far as I’m concerned, what I’d like to do is talk about the Detroit Lions, who we play on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Dannon Oikos yogurt, one of several companies Newton represents in commercials, announced it was “shocked and disheartened” over Newton’s remarks and no longer would work with the quarterback.
Also on Thursday, Rodrigue tweeted an apology for what she termed “offensive tweets” posted on her account four to five years ago. She did not say specifically which tweets she was referring to.
Charlotte Observer executive sports editor Mike Persinger said that Rodrigue’s apology on Twitter would be the only comments.
Carolina players chose to stay focused on Sunday’s game against the Lions. Many had not heard about Newton’s comments until Thursday.
“That’s something for Cam to deal with and you guys to deal with,” said outside linebacker and team captain Thomas Davis . “We weren’t there. We really don’t know what is happening. So we’re really focused in on Detroit. We can’t allow anything for us to be a distraction.”
Asked what it meant for the face of the organization to make such a comment, Davis said: “That says that’s something Cam is going to have to deal with you guys. He’s going to have to deal with that moving forward. I feel like it’s a situation he’s going to handle and he’s going to handle it well. But for us as a football team, we’ll remain focused on Detroit.”
Rivera said he talked to his players Thursday about staying focused while dealing with off-the-field issues such as Newton’s comment, the shooting in Las Vegas and the devastation from the hurricane in Puerto Rico.
“I said to the guys, there’s some issues out there we have to deal with,” Rivera said. “But be where your feet are. When you’re on the football field, be on the football field. When you’re in the meeting room, be in the meeting room. Try to maintain your focus and stay focused.
“These are trying times. I believe that and I understand that. There are some very serious issues out there, and this country has dealt with a lot of them lately, from the hurricane disasters to the very terrible incident in Las Vegas to this. These are all issues that are important.”
ESPN’s David Newton contributed to this report.

Michigan President Insults Trump Supporters

University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel called ‘marginalized’ Trump supporters ‘ironic’ in emails and seemed to say he wanted to use job to defeat Trump
The president of the taxpayer-funded University of Michigan, Mark Schlissel, wrote in an email that he found it “ironic” when students who supported Donald Trump felt “marginalized and ostracized” on campus after the 2016 presidential election. A few months earlier, Schlissel wrote in another email that he “would feel awful if Trump won the election” and seemed to suggest that wanted to use his taxpayer-funded job to defeat Trump.
Schlissel then refused to release the emails — and others — in which he disparaged Trump and Trump’s supporters.
On Wednesday, the Mackinac Center for Public Policy reached a settlement over the University of Michigan’s refusal to release the emails. The Michigan free-market group had sued the public school in March after school officials. In the settlement, the Michigan officials agreed to release Schlissel’s emails they had previously withheld in response to the Mackinac Center’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
In a Nov. 11 email — three days after the election — Schlissel told the chancellor at the University of Michigan–Dearborn that there was “some complaint from our minority of Trump supporters who now feel marginalized and ostracized in our campus milieu and post election activity.”
Schlissel described the complaints about feeling marginalized as “ironic.”
Mackinac FOIA email 1
In a Nov. 10 email to Mary Sue Coleman, Schlissel predecessor as Michigan president, Schlissel said he was “overwhelmed with uncertainty” because Trump won the election.
The 59-year-old Schlissel, whose lifetime has included the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the fall of the Berlin Wall, described Trump’s narrow election victory as “unlike anything” he has “ever lived through.”
“Students rallied on the Diag yesterday night and the speakers all expressed fear about their place in American society and on campus. I was only able to reassure them about the latter,” Schlissel wrote.
In the immediate aftermath of Trump’s 2016 presidential election victory, the University of Michigan hosted several events for students who were upset that Trump had won the election.
There were also protests. Dozens of students gathered to chant “Pussy grabs back,” “Not my president” and much more. One or more Michigan students also spray-painted “Kill ‘Em All” and “Fuck America” onto a large public rock on campus. The paint showed a donkey and elephant, representing the Democratic and Republican parties. (RELATED: NO SAFE SPACE: The Daily Caller’s YUGE Roundup Of Campus Freakouts After Trump’s Victory)
Schissel also plainly and unmistakably implied that Trump and Trump supporters oppose science and believe only white people should attend the University of Michigan.
Mackinac FOIA email 2
In an Aug. 24 email, prior to the election, Schlissel wrote that he “would feel awful if Trump won the election” and he seemed to suggest that wanted to do things from his taxpayer-funded position to affect the election.
“I would feel awful if Trump won the election and I was too afraid of appearing political to make any effort to encourage our students to thoughtfully participate,” Schlissel wrote.
Mackinac FOIA email 3
The Mackinac Center notes that Schlissel is a public employee and that the University of Michigan collects more than $1 billion each year in taxpayer funds from the federal government and the state of Michigan.
Schlissel is the fourth-highest paid employee on the University of Michigan’s campus in Ann Arbor. As of 2015, his salary was $772,000 per year, reports The Michigan Daily.
Mark Schlissel YouTube screenshot/MLive
“The University of Michigan is a public entity which receives more than $300 million in state funds,” said Mackinac Center spokesman Patrick Wright.”
In addition to releasing the unreleased emails, the University of Michigan also agreed to change its policies concerning FOIA requests as part of the settlement. The new policies will make obtaining information easier for taxpayers and the press.
“People and the press have a right to this information, even if it’s embarrassing or inconvenient for the public officials involved,” Wright said.
The Mackinac Center noted that school officials said they needed less than three hours to gather the information they had been withholding.
An especially silly election-related event occurred at the ostensibly prestigious University of Michigan Law School. After Trump won, staffers scheduled — then hastily canceled – an event entitled “Post-election Self-care with Food and Play.” The University of Michigan Law School’s embedded psychologist, Reena Sheth, was going to host of the event.
“Join us for delicious and comforting food with opportunity to experience some stress-busting, self-care activities such as coloring sheets, play dough [sic], positive card-making, Legos, and bubbles with your fellow law students,” the description of the event announced — before school officials rescinded it in response to intense national mockery. (RELATED: University Of Michigan Law School Tries, Fails To Scrub Trump Trauma Play-Doh Event From Website)
In August, officials at the University of Michigan were looking to hire a new employee to oversee the taxpayer-funded school’s “Bias Response Team” and “enact cultural appropriation prevention initiatives.” The full-time position — with the title of “bias incident prevention and response coordinator” — offered a starting salary between $46,000 and $57,000. (RELATED: Public University Famous For Trump Trauma Play-Doh Now Seeks ‘Cultural Appropriation’ Cop)
Trump eked out a victory in the state of Michigan in 2016. He won the state’s 16 electoral votes by receiving just 10,704 more votes than Hillary Clinton received.
The University also famously tried to let everyone choose their own pronouns last academic year. The effort was largely a failure. (RELATED: Conservative Student Is Now ‘HIS MAJESTY’ After University Of Michigan Lets Everyone Make Up Their Own Pronouns)

Trump may be planning to ‘decertify’ Iran nuclear deal

President Trump is expected to “decertify” the international nuke deal with Iran next week, contending that the accord is not in the United States’ interest, it was reported Thursday.
The decision would force Congress to deal with the issue, The Washington Post said, citing sources briefed on the White House strategy.
It could also lead to the reimposition of US sanctions on Iran, which would scrap the deal that the US and five other nations reached in 2015 to limit the Islamic theocracy’s nuclear program.
Trump was expected to announce the decision in a speech, tentatively scheduled for this Thursday, detailing a broader strategy for dealing with a nation his administration say supports terrorism and sows chaos in the Mideast.
Trump wants a tougher approach that could lead to the modification of the pact, which he has slammed as a bad deal.
At the UN General Assembly last month, he called the deal an “embarrassment” and “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.”
But Trump would hold off on recommending Congress reimpose sanctions on Iran, The Washington Post reported, citing four unidentified people “familiar with aspects of the president’s thinking.”
But the sources warned that Trump could change his mind, and the White House would not confirm any plans for a speech or any such decision.
Trump faces an Oct. 15 deadline to tell Congress if Iran is complying with the nuke deal and whether he believes it is in the interests of the US.
“The administration looks forward to sharing details of our Iran strategy at the appropriate time,” Michael Anton, a spokesman for the White House national security council, told The Washington Post.
If Trump decertifies the deal, a 60-day congressional review period would kick in to consider the next step.
While Trump has said he would be open to renegotiating the deal, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said last month that he would not be willing to alter it.
And Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last month threatened harsh action if the US makes a “wrong move” on the nuclear accord.
Tillerson said on Wednesday that Trump would be given recommendations on the deal.
He declined to say whether he agreed with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’ assertion to Congress on Tuesday that Iran was “fundamentally” in compliance with the accord.

Harvey Weinstein unloads Connecticut home for $1.65 million

Film producer Harvey Weinstein has sold a home in Connecticut for $1.65 million.
Film executive Harvey Weinstein, who is embroiled in a sexual harassment controversy, has sold a home in Westport, Conn., for $1.65 million.
He bought the property more than two decades ago for $825,000, records show.
Built in 1953, the two-story residence sits on more than half an acre dotted with mature trees.
The 3,050-square-foot, whitewashed house opens in dramatic fashion to a living room with a wall of windows that take in the leafy grounds. The eat-in kitchen opens to a family room with a fireplace. The master suite has a sitting room and a private bath for a total of four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Lawns, stone planters and mature landscaping fill out the grounds.
The property came up for sale in April for $2.25 million, records show. More recently it was listed for $1.795 million.
Darlene Letersky of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage was the listing agent, according to the Multiple Listing Service. Judy Michaelis, also with Coldwell Banker, represented the buyer.
Weinstein, 65, co-founded Miramax in 1979 and produced such hit films at the production company as “Shakespeare in Love” and “Chicago.” He founded his namesake studio, Weinstein Co., with his brother, Bob, in 2005.
In a statement to the Los Angeles Times on Thursday, the executive and producer apologized for behavior “with colleagues in the past [that] has caused a lot of pain.” He is taking a leave of absence from his studio to deal with his issues “head on.”

Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed women for decades. The women in Hollywood remained silent for decades. Hillary Clinton took Weinstein money for decades. It was an open secret said one Hollywood insider anonymously.
Weinstein’s lawyer and counselor is Lisa Bloom, Gloria Allred’s daugher. Lisa Bloom represents women’s rights unless she’s being paid gobs of money by Hollywood bigwig pigs like Harvey Weinstein. Then, her sensibilities lean to the crassly money and power side. In this way, she’s a lot like feminist hero Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton, the recipient of Harvey Weinstein’s largesse, found that her grabby hand’s nerves fired more quickly than her crawling skin nerves. Funny how that happens to feminists.
Speaking of feminists. Where was Ashley Judd when Harvey Weinstein feted Her Royal Highness Hillary? Why did Judd remain quiet when the serial abuser Weinstein paid big money to be for Her?
All this is not to absolve Harvey Weinstein or to say he isn’t awful, because based on many reports, wow, is he ever. To get a solid feel for how disgusting Mr. Weinstein is, one need only read his own comments about Ashley Judd. Aren’t women always to be believed? From the New York Post:
Weinstein plans to sue the New York Times for $50 million even as he’s taking a break to get therapy because of his unspecified problem.
Here’s Weinstein’s full statement emphasis added with some comments in italics.
A simpler statement would have been, “SORRY, NOT SORRY!”
Twitter response encapsulates Weinstein’s weasel statement:
Whenever a hit pieces comes out on a major Democrat, it’s important to question the timing. Why now? Why him — especially since everyone knew about his evil ways? Perhaps it’s because Democrats are sick of Hillary? Is it possible that by clearing out a major Clinton donor, the way is made for other Democrats?
It’s enough to know overtly what’s always been known: that Hollywood is a disgusting place that covers for serial harassers and is utterly hypocritical about feminism and respecting women. Hollywood is a town made up of people who will pay lip service to Hillary Clinton but sides with guys like Bill Clinton and Harvey Weinstein every time.
