Google pulls YouTube from Amazon devices, escalating spat

(Reuters) — A rare public spat in the technology industry escalated on Tuesday when Google said it would block its video streaming application YouTube from two Amazon.com Inc devices and criticized the online retailer for not selling Google hardware.
The feud is the latest in Silicon Valley to put customers in the crossfire of major competitors. Amazon and Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, square off in many areas, from cloud computing and online search, to selling voice-controlled gadgets like the Google Home and Amazon Echo Show.
The stakes are high: many in the technology industry expect that interacting with computers by voice will become widespread, and it is unclear if Amazon, Google or another company will dominate the space. Amazon’s suite of voice-controlled devices has outsold Google’s so far, according to a study by research firm eMarketer from earlier this year.
In a statement, Google said, ”Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make (its) Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of (our sister company) Nest’s latest products.
“Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV,” Google said. “We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.”
Amazon said in a statement, “Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website.”
It said it hoped to resolve the issue with Google as soon as possible but customers could access YouTube through the internet — not an app — on the devices in the meantime.
The break has been a long time coming. Amazon kicked the Chromecast, Google’s television player, off its retail website in 2015, along with Apple Inc’s TV player. Amazon had explained the move by saying it wanted to avoid confusing customers who might expect its Prime Video service to be available on devices sold by Amazon.
Amazon and Apple mended ties earlier this year when it was announced Prime Video would come to Apple TV. Not so with Google.
In September, Google cut off YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show, which had displayed videos on its touchscreen without video recommendations, channel subscriptions and other features. Amazon later reintroduced YouTube to the device, but the voice commands it added violated the use terms and on Tuesday Google again removed the service.
The Fire TV loses access to its YouTube app on Jan. 1, Google said. Amazon has sold that device for longer than the Echo Show, meaning more customers may now be affected.

Google's Play Store is not coming to Windows 10

0

A potential hint that Android apps may get support on Microsoft’s PC OS turns out to be an editing error.
Would you like to get Android apps on your Windows 10 computer? There will be people who would, but unsurprisingly there’s currently no support. However, is that about to change?
During the keynote presentation at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, Asus unveiled the Snapdragon-powered NovaGo and with it ran a short video highlighting some of its key points.
That’s all well and good, but eagle-eyed viewers may spot the Google Play Store icon appear at the end of a line of app icons including Twitter, Line, Facebook, Spotify and Netflix as a silver ball rushes past them.
What’s more, the words «familiar Windows experience» display on screen at the same tine.
Is it an innocent mistake, or is this a hint at something yet to be announced? See it for yourself below (blink and you’ll miss it at 1h, 33m, 22s).
We posed the question to Microsoft’s GM of Windows Server, Erin Chapple who said «Windows does not support Android apps. We’re not focused on that today.»
We also asked another Microsoft spokesperson about this, but they couldn’t provide any insight, simply saying «we’re always working with various partners.»
There’s no suggestion here then that Microsoft is working on any sort of support, but it’s also not a categorical no to anything happening in the future.
We have contacted Qualcomm, Asus and HP (the latter also has a Snapdragon powered laptop — the Envy X2) for comment on this. We’ll update this article as soon as we hear back.

Thumbs-up from athletes for IOC decision on Russia

0

Athletes who were robbed of medals by Russia’s doping at the Sochi Olympics are giving a thumbs-up to the International Olympic Committee’s decision to let Russian athletes compete at the upcoming Olympics.
Athletes who lost medals because of Russia’s doping program at the Sochi Olympics gave a broad thumbs-up to the International Olympic Committee’s decision Tuesday to let Russians compete at the upcoming Pyeongchang Games — but not under their own flag.
The consensus among athletes was that the IOC struck a good balance between punishing the nation but not Russian athletes who may not have been part of the vast doping scheme.
«It sounds like a really good compromise to me,» said Stuart Benson, who raced on the British four-man bobsled team that placed fifth in Sochi, but which now hopes for the bronze medal after two Russian sleds were disqualified. When those DQs were announced in November, Benson celebrated with a macaroni cheese dinner.
«It’s a punishment for the state, the country, and they are obviously trying not to punish the athletes who haven’t done anything wrong,» he said in a phone interview moments after the IOC announced that Russian athletes who pass a series of drug tests can apply to compete as neutral athletes. If Russians win, the Russian flag won’t fly and the anthem won’t be played.
He said he expects the screening process will weed out any cheats.
«I’d be confident enough that the IOC, with all the vast knowledge they’ve got, wouldn’t put in a place a system that didn’t tick all the boxes,» he said.
Many athletes said they wouldn’t have felt comfortable had the IOC banned all Russians from the Pyeongchang Games.
«Very tough collective sanctions can lead to a huge injustice and that’s not at all the IOC’s role to do that,» said French cross-country skier Robin Duvillard. He and other members of the French team that got bronze in the men’s 4 x 10-kilometer relay in Sochi are now in line for the silver medal that was stripped in November from the Russian team.
He said overly harsh sanctions risked alienating Russians who already «feel that everyone is against them. And that is good for no one.»
«You have to be careful about not going too far,» he said.
Making Russian athletes compete as neutrals in Pyeongchang will hurt Russian authorities but spare its athletes, Duvillard added.
«It is a good punishment for the Russian state, because it’s a political setback,» he said. «We are taking away a symbol from them and recognition of their country.»
US skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender, who was fourth in Sochi and will go to bronze with a Russian disqualified, said she feels a culture change needs to happen.
«The only way to ensure that is to hold a strong line,» she said. «Russia will deny to the end, and if a line was not drawn, I feel behind closed doors they would have made a mockery of the Olympic movement.»
John Jackson, another member of the British bobsled team in line for an upgrade to bronze, said Russia deserved the punishment because of its steadfast refusals to accept investigators’ findings that the doping scheme was state-supported.
«For me, it’s all to do with the accountability and Russia, as a nation, as a sporting governing body… has not taken accountability and ownership of the fact that this was a massive doping operation within their sporting community,» he said.
«The IOC needed to make to stand to show Russia and any other country that might be thinking about doing systematic doping that they can’t get away with it.»
Now retired Dutch speed skater Margot Boer, in line for the silver medal from the women’s 500 meters in Sochi that was stripped from Russia’s Olga Fatkulina, said the decision could help restore credibility to the IOC after it was broadly criticized for letting Russia compete under its own flag at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
«They are making a point,» she said. «This a step back in the good direction.»
Speaking earlier Tuesday before the IOC announcement, she also said that a blanket ban was undesirable.
«There are some athletes who I know for sure had nothing to do with it, so I don’t want them to not be able to race,» she said. «If your brother is bad and does something wrong, the rest of the family doesn’t have to go to jail.»

Star Wars: Battlefront II should teach publishers to drop the sales pitch

Electronic Arts has an authenticity problem, and, in my opinion, it stems from how it talks to us about its games. Star Wars: Battlefront II’s launch was a calamity, and I think EA made it worse with how it communicated to angry fans. Maybe it’s corporate policy or culture (or some other issue), but most of EA’s communications to fans come in the form of a sales pitch. Even when the company attempts to address player concerns or apologize, it comes across like you’re talking to Lionel Hutz.
I get that publishers are afraid of saying too much. Gamers are loud and remember everything, and they will take whatever a company says as a promise. That requires a difficult balance of saying enough to get people excited without giving away too much. Like Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross, you can describe EA’s strategy as “Always Be Closing.” That’s understandable, because it has a product to sell. But that type of communication can often make things worse — especially in a crisis. If people are mad because you covered them in mud, you will only make them angrier if you try to tell them you’re actually serving them chocolate cake.
EA has made a number of unforced errors when it comes to talking about its games — especially Star Wars: Battlefront II. I’ve picked three moments to illustrate how EA’s recent public-relations style is ill-equipped to handle angry fans during a crisis or before frustration turns into something bigger. Of course, EA started in 1982, so that style has changed a lot over time. And even in its modern form, the company is willing to let some of its development partners speak frankly on the record. But I still think the publisher’s policies made the Battlefront II crisis worse.
I reached out to EA to see if it would like to comment on how its communications with fans is changing in the wake of Star Wars: Battlefront II. It did not provide a response to my request.
My first example comes from a recent interview I did with Star Wars: Battlefront II director Mark Thompson. I had only played the first three levels of the campaign as part of the trial at this point, and I asked about how the game was establishing its own identity. The director explained that the studio was focusing on showing Iden Versio, the main character, as an agent of the Empire. But he said you would also get the chance to play as famous Star Wars heroes as well.
“And in the campaign we do have chapters where you get to play as the iconic movie characters, because that’s a big part of the Battlefront multiplayer experience, being able to play as heroes or villains in Galactic Assault,” said Thompson. “So we wanted to do the same thing in campaign. In those chapters, we take that familiar perspective, that iconic character, and we put them in a new event in a place you haven’t seen them before, doing something that hasn’t been previously accounted for in the existing Star Wars timeline.”
This isn’t some egregious lie, but it also doesn’t feel accurate now that I’ve played all the way through the campaign. These hero missions are fan-service tourism. And there’s nothing wrong with fan-service tourism! So why doesn’t EA just own that? Because it compels itself to frame everything it does as an amazing feature that gamers have never seen before. It can’t say, “We know people love Luke and Lando, and we wanted to give them that because it’s a bad idea to release a broad Star Wars game without those characters.” But because everyone at EA is always selling, Thompson sold it to me as some amazing new addition to the Star Wars mythos.
My interview was a minor moment that wouldn’t have caused me a second thought if EA’s compulsion to spin its business decisions as wonderful additions for gamers hadn’t caught the attention of Reddit. But that’s the second example.
Earlier this month, EA was facing down angry fans about Battlefront II’s loot boxes and progressions system. One thread went viral because a player claimed it took $80 to unlock Darth Vader after purchasing the game for $60. A lot of people disliked that the option to unlock Vader with in-game currency would take dozens of hours, and you only earn currency based on time played and not skill or performance. Readers took this as a system that encouraged players to spend some extra money to get the characters and upgrades that they want. This got EA to respond directly… and that comment is now the most downvoted post in the history of Reddit.
“The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes,” the EACommunityTeam account wrote. “As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.”
You can see the problem, right? EA made a business decision. It wanted to generate more money from Battlefront II by selling faster access to Darth Vader, but for EA, admitting that was never an option. Instead, it went right back into “sell, sell, sell” mode. This was all about the players and their pride and their sense of accomplishment! EA is just worried about you.
The gaming audience is savvy, and they are not going to respond well to obvious corporate spin. In fact, they might respond by giving a comment like that 674,000 downvotes before the moderators close the thread. No one likes an aggressive salesman who never stops trying to get you to spend money.
My final example of EA’s mouth causing a problem for itself is when the company cut the cost of unlocking heroes following the Reddit outrage. In a blog post, DICE executive producer John Wasilczyk explained that his team was going to reduce the amount of credits it would take to unlock Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and other heroes by 75 percent. This didn’t satisfy a lot of people, but at least EA was taking action to handle its PR disaster. Except the publisher was also creating a new problem. It turns out that when it cut the cost of the heroes, it also cut the reward you get for finishing the single-player campaign from 20,000 credits to 5,000 credits … or by 75 percent.
Players found out about EA making that corresponding cut, and it was another reason to distrust and the company and to treat it as an enemy attempting to pull one over on consumers.
EA should have just admitted at the time that it was going to cut the single-player reward. It could have said that this was always meant as a way to encourage players to get into multiplayer. You have enough credits now to unlock Iden Versio or you have a decent headstart on unlocking Luke or someone else. Now, go and play online and earn some more credits.
But again, it seems to me that transparency was never even an option for Electronic Arts. It couldn’t tell players about cutting the single-player reward because that would look bad and it would mean it wasn’t selling the game and its features.
To me, it’s almost every sentence from EA feels transactional. It is promising to do something or make something with the purpose of getting you to spend money in return. And I think that is adequate as its default messaging voice, but it has to learn a few phrases from the languages of responsibility and relationship building.
“That’s accurate,” Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania marketing professor Jonah Berger wrote in a note to GamesBeat when I explained EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II situation to him.
What’s especially frustrating about EA is that it should know better. This is PR 101.
“The biggest problem with company ‘apologies’ is that they’re aren’t apologies at all,” said Berger. “A good apology starts with showing someone you heard their concerns and actually care about them. If you’re not authentic and don’t listen, people get even more upset.”
Or they could give you a record number of downvotes.
But EA screwed up more than just its apologies. Take the last of my three examples. EA tried to get away with cutting the single-player reward without telling customers. Or maybe it just didn’t think to tell people. Either way, it looks bad. But it doesn’t look as bad as the Chicago Tylenol Murders, where seven people died in 1982 because they all took cyanide-tainted Tylenol. That’s a real crisis, and Johnson & Johnson should have had to rebrand its over-the-counter painkiller. But the reason you can still pick up Tylenol Cold & Sinus from the Walgreens on the corner is because Johnson & Johnson’s PR kicked into action immediately, was completely open and honest with the public, and took responsibility for the crisis without reservation.
I don’t think EA needs to open up completely. It didn’t murder anyone, after all. But the lesson of the Tylenol Crisis is that it’s always better do something that puts the consumers first even if it appears to hurt the company. EA probably should not have lowered the single-player reward 75 percent. It could have come clean and said that it wanted people to use this as a stepping stone from the campaign to the multiplayer and now this is going to take a lot away from the progression. But when it did cut the reward, it is crazy that it didn’t say anything.
But while taking responsibility is indispensable when consumers are angry or panicky, publishers don’t have to exist in a constant state of crisis — I know that’s a crazy thing to say. Other companies have found ways to introduce new business models and maintain game services without lighting their communities on fire. Look at Blizzard and Overwatch. That game has as many problems as anything else, but fans tend to have patience and faith that the developer will get things right. A lot of the credit for that should go to Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan, who regularly posts blogs and video updates talking about what is happening with the game.
Ubisoft is another stellar example of relationship building (recently, anyhow), and it is likely a piece of the puzzle that explains the relentless popularity of its recent games. Many gamers still remember the publisher for its heavy-handed DRM and for years of terrible PC ports, but it has grown a connection with the fans of its games recently that has helped it deal with player angst. For Honor, one of the best-selling games of the year, ran into some trouble over the summer when a player won a tournament with an exploit that fans had been yelling about for months. Since then, the company has made sure to show up where its fans are and listen. Nearly every thread on the For Honor subforum on Reddit has a note from community manager Eric Pope. When new players show up with problems, posters will tell them to reach out to Pope for answers.
For Honor even puts armor that gives players an advantage in its loot boxes, which is similar to what Battlefront II did wrong, but despite that the game has continued to grow. It is the No. 7 top-selling game of 2017, and Ubisoft is rolling out a season 2 of DLC and in-game events. Ubisoft has also done the same community building with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Rainbow Six: Siege. These games have quietly attracted millions of players, and they have stayed under the radar in part because fans don’t seem to feel the need to draw attention to the problems. Ubisoft is listening to them, and containing any anger or frustration by dealing with it head on.
Someone at EA seems to know this. On November 15, the DICE developers showed up on the Battlefront Reddit forum for an “Ask Me Anything,” which is a question-and-answer session with fans. The company did a lot of things right for this.. It ditched the faceless “EACommunityTeam” account in favor of three named DICE developers, and they tried to take on some of the more pointed questions from the community. But it was too late. The anger had already spread into the mainstream. NPR, CNN, and other outlets were covering the fan revolt. The point of listening to your community is to make them feel like they don’t have to get the attention of cable news or the government of Belgium to enact change in your game.

The US will deploy B-1B Lancer bombers over Korean Peninsula for joint aerial drills with U. S. and South Korean fighters, Yonhap News reports, citing military authorities.
The B-1B squadron will fly from the Anderson Air Force Base in Guam today, and will be deployed to participate in the United States Air Force’s «Vigilant Ace»  which as we reported over the weekend is the “largest-ever” joint US aerial drill to be held together with South Korea. The squadron of tactical bombers will practice bombing runs under the cover of South Korean warplanes.
As Yonhap adds, «as a strategic weapon, the B-1B is participating in this training, with the intensity of the pressure felt by North Korea seemingly near its peak. B-1B flew over the Korean peninsula on February 2, ahead of US President Donald Trump’s visit.»
In September, B-1Bs and F-15C Eagle fighters traveled the farthest north of the demilitarized zone any U. S. fighter or bomber aircraft have flown off North Korea’s coast this century. This promoted North Korea to say it was within its rights to shoot down U. S. warplanes flying in international airspace.

Ashton Kutcher Is Leaning On Mila Kunis After Danny Masterson’s Firing – Hollywood Life

Ashton Kutcher is leaning on Mila Kunis after Danny Masterson’s firing.
Ashton Kutcher, 39, is not feeling great about co-star Danny Masterson ‘s firing from Netflix’s The Ranch due to multiple rape allegations, and he’s been leaning on his wife Mila Kunis, 34, to feel better. “ Ashton has been leaning on his wife Mila during this crisis with their friend Danny,” a source close to Ashton EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com . “ Ashton has been talking at length with Mila about the terrible allegations against Danny, whom they both love. They are struggling with the allegations against him. Mila is disappointed by Danny’s firing but understands what a tough position Ashton was put in.” Danny released a statement after the firing that expressed his sadness about the decision and he denied the allegations. “Mila and Ashton have known Danny for a very long time and know him to be a sweet, kind, gentle soul. Danny has slammed the allegations so Ashton and Mila are both hoping for this sad story to turn around with a happy ending.” See photos of Danny here.
Back in Mar. it was reported that three Scientologists came forward to accuse Danny, who also practices Scientology, of raping them when he was on That ’70s Show with both Ashton and Mila. The women claimed that the Church of Scientology told them not to contact police at the time or go public with the terrible accusations. Just 24 hours before news of his firing from Netflix made headlines, it was reported that the women asked the company’s executive why they didn’t take any action toward Danny up to the point, and he allegedly said it was because he didn’t believe them.
Netflix has written Danny out of the show and production will resume in early 2018 without him. Despite the firing, no official charges have been made against Danny at this time.
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked by the rape accusations against Danny? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Wildfires threaten thousands of homes in Southern California

0

The fires have burned more than 47,000 acres and more than 27,000 people have been evacuated
VENTURA, Calif. — Wildfires in Southern California are being powered Tuesday night by very strong Santa Ana winds gusting as high as 80 miles per hour. The fires — in Los Angeles and Ventura counties — have already burned more than 47,000 acres. More than 27,000 people have been evacuated, and more than 3,500 firefighters are on the job.
They’re some of the harshest conditions firefighters have faced in years. Extremely dry, powerful winds roared through Ventura County Monday night. Within hours, a 50-acre fire exploded, and the winds haven’t let up.
«We’re just hoping to keep this from extending into this whole neighborhood,» firefighter Jeff Maurer said.
Also hampering the fight: little or no water pressure on several hillside streets.
«So you just can’t get water out of the hydrant?» CBS News asked Maurer. «Yeah, there’s only a limited amount. You can only get so much,» he said.
Once the water from fire trucks ran out, all that remained on several streets were garden hoses. So residents filled buckets, trying to douse hot spots before they reignite. But throughout the day, the fire claimed even more homes.
Police are going door to door, warning residents to leave.
«The wind’s shifted. It’s coming down. It’s four or five houses down. It’s time to go,» one resident said.
In another neighborhood, we found Steven Phillips.
«Why did you come here?» CBS News asked. «To check on my son’s house,» Phillips said. His son is a firefighter, now on the lines, his pregnant wife safely evacuated.
«You see this, what’s the only thing you can do now?» CBS asked. «Just stay as a family and be blessed that you are alive. You can always rebuild,» Phillips said.
The extreme fire conditions are expected to last through at least Friday morning.
CBS News correspondent Carter Evans was in a helicopter flying 4,500 feet above the Sylmar fire near Los Angeles.
He reports that an even bigger fire about 50 miles north had hit some wealthy communities. Some neighborhoods were wiped out, with just a few homes left standing. That fire was growing by the minute after exploding overnight, Evans reported.

White House: Deutsche Bank Subpoena Story Fake News

0

Fake report once again top story of the day Fake report once again top story of the day.
White House Press Secretary Sarah H. Sanders pushed back against reports that FBI special counsel Robert Mueller had subpoenaed President Trump’s bank records from Deutsche Bank.
“We confirmed that the news reports [that] the special counsel had subpoenaed financial records related to the president are completely false,” Sanders said during Tuesday’s press briefing.
“No subpoena has been issued or received. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources. I think this is another example of the media going too far and too fast and we don’t see it going in that direction,” she said.
Deutsche Bank did not immediately comment on the new revelations, but did say the bank “always cooperates with investigating authorities in all countries,” in a statement on Tuesday.
This comes after an ABC fake news report tanked the stock market on Friday by claiming that Trump ordered former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn to speak with the Russian government as a candidate, not as President-Elect.
ABC has since suspended reporter Brian Ross for a month and issued an apology over the fake report, but the damage had been done.
The Dow Jones plunged by nearly 350 points after the fake news report, and The View’s Joy Behar celebrated Trump’s imminent impeachment with glee.
The mainstream media is accelerating their disinformation campaign in hopes of impeaching Trump, because as leftist Michael Moore points out, Trump is achieving his agenda despite the phony Russian investigation, which is showing signs of unraveling .
Additionally, the Trump administration is considering proposals to create its own private spy network as a way to circumvent the deep state/globalist bureaucracy, reports The Intercept.
For the globalists, the only way to hold on to power in America is if Trump is removed from office.
