Paradise Papers: Mit gutem Draht nach Moskau

0

Man accused of animal cruelty after 70 dead cows found on property

0

The animals were found sometime this past summer.
A warrant has been issued for a Fowlerville area property owner after 70 cows were found dead earlier this year.
Keith Edwin Huck Jr., 61, of Cohoctah Township, is accused of animal cruelty, a felony that has a maximum sentence of four years in prison, according to the Livingston Daily. He also faces misdemeanor charges of failing to bury dead animals.
The circumstances of the animals‘ deaths have not been made public, according to the news site. Court documents show the dead animals were found sometime this summer.
The Livingston County prosecutor has said the charges are based on allegations Huck did not provide proper care to cows and pigs, the news site reported.

The best Vodafone deals in November 2017

0

We’ll show you the best Vodafone deals on the iPhone 7, Galaxy S8 and more. Find all the cheapest prices here.
Vodafone is one of the biggest networks in the world and one of the most powerful brands in the UK. Not surprising when they so frequently offer excellent tariffs on flagship handsets like the iPhone 8, Galaxy S8 and the market’s other favourite phones. iPhone 8 Galaxy S8
Vodafone is often well worth considering if you need a mobile phone deal with a middling amount of data – you’ll rarely find that it’s the very cheapest network for your favourite handset, and it usually can’t compete with Three deals when it comes to big data bundle. mobile phone deal Three deals
But if your data sweet spot is around 16GB a month, Vodafone frequently then becomes a lot more competitive with prices that challenge EE phone deals and O2 deals. And, if you’re lucky, you may be hunting for your smartphone when its running a promotion where you get an extra 10GB for free. EE phone deals O2 deals
If Vodafone appeals to you though – or if you want to bag a Red Entertainment package that gives you a year’s subscription to Spotify Premium, NOW TV Entertainment or the Sky Sports app – then that’s where this page comes in! We’ve rounded up all of the best Vodafone phone deals so that you don’t have to wait until Black Friday to find the cheapest prices and plans for your needs. If you’re after something a little more specific, take a look at TechRadar’s bespoke comparison chart below. Black Friday
iPhone X deals
Oh gosh, Apple went and did it. After years upon years of incremental upgrades, it finally made something special to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. For the iPhone X it has dropped the bezel altogether, while the 5.8-inch Super Retina HD is scarily good. And if you tuned into the launch event and liked the look of Animojis, well there’s that as well! iPhone
iPhone X 64GB| £170.99 upfront | 4GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £50pm For the time being, this is the cheapest iPhone X deal on the market over a two tear term. It’s one of the only tariffs that manages to combine £50 bills with an upfront spend of less than £200. For that, you get 4GB of data, which will meet a lot of people’s surfing, Spotify social media needs. While calls and texts are completely uncapped. Total cost over 24 months is £1370.99

iPhone X 64GB| FREE upfront| 26GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £64pm One of our favourite early iPhone X deals just got even better, thanks to this TechRadar exclusive tariff provided by Mobile Phones Direct. It manages to give you stacks of data and you don’t pay a penny upfront. Ok, so the monthly bills are on the high side, but this is the iPhone X after all. Until iPhone X prices fall on a bigger scale, this deal will take some beating. Total cost over 24 months is £1536

iPhone 8 deals
Thanks to the spectacle that was the iPhone X launch (see above for more of that splendour), the reception for the iPhone 8 was a little bit flat. Perhaps unfairly – it improves on the iPhone 7 with wireless charging and an improved camera. Plus, it’s quite a bit cheaper. So if you’re looking for the best iPhone but balk at the iPhone X expense, try the 8 on for size instead. iPhone X
iPhone 8 64GB | £106.99 upfront | 1GB data| Unlimited calls and texts| £36pm If you simply want the cheapest iPhone 8 tariff out there without splashing much more than £100 upfront, then Mobile Phones Direct has you covered. You won’t be surprised to read that you only get 1GB of data per month, but check out those £36 monthly payments! It’s one of the cheapest iPhone 8 deals out there. iPhone 8 64GB| FREE upfront (with 10OFF)| 26GB data| Unlimited calls and texts| £48pm We’ve picked out this bigger data deal on Vodafone thanks to the absolutely, positively FREE handset you get at the start of the contract. It takes the monthly spend up to £48, but check out all that data – the fact that you’ll be getting 26GB every month is another great reason to get this. Total cost over 24 months is £1152

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 deals
Sssssshhhhh! Don’t mention the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and its troublesome little overheating problem. The awesome Galaxy Note 8 has helped as forget all about that little fiasco thanks to its vast 6.3-inch infinity display and razor sharp 6GB Ram. If you want the best big screen Android phone on the market, then look no further.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 | £69.99 upfront | 1GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £44pm It’s a somewhat auspicious honour, but Vodafone currently has the cheapest Note 8 overall tariff over two years (if you don’t want to splash more than £200 at the start). Auspicious because you only get 1GB of data and it’s still mega expensive. Total cost over 24 months is £1125.99

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 | £41.99 upfront | 32GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £54pm If you need upwards of 30GB data each month, then Vodafone is your best bet at the moment. This deal gets you a MASSIVE 32GB – now that’s a lot of Netflix watching and (admit it) Facebook scrolling to that glorious looking 6.3-inch screen without too much fear of exceeding your limits. It was free before, but now you have to pay a little upfront. Total cost over 24 months is £1337.99

iPhone 7 deals
The new iPhone 7 is another smash hit mobile phone from Apple thanks to further design enhancements. It’s now waterproof, has a better screen and stereo speakers. The long-rumoured dropping of the headphone jack has become a reality. Memory capacity has been given a boost now, with the smallest models now starting at a much more spacious 32GB.
iPhone 7 32GB | £54.99 upfront| Unlimited calls and texts| 1GB data | £32pm So you like Vodafone, have settled on the iPhone 7 and want to spend as little as possible over the next two years for your smartphone. Well in that case this is the deal you need to opt for. It’s an attractive balance of upfront spend and monthly bills, but there are much better deals to be had on competing networks. Total cost over 24 months is £822.99

iPhone 7 32GB| FREE upfront| Unlimited calls and texts| 26GB data | £44pm Vodafone has just started experimenting with some very sexy new data allowances, and this mighty 26GB tariff replaces its best 16GB deals from yore. It may look expensive, but that’s a heck of a lot of data, so still worth a look if you’re a Vodafone devotee. And you don’t even have to pay a penny at the start of the contract. Samsung Galaxy S8 deals
There’s no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S8 is a fantastic phone. The lightning fast chip-set and abandonment of a large bezel around the screen makes it the premier Android experience. It’s expensive for sure, but there are bargains to be found… Samsung Galaxy S8
Samsung Galaxy S8| FREE upfront| 1GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £32pm Well this seems like a dreadful shame. Until a few weeks ago you could get S8 deals on Vodafone and pay less than £30 per month. But at least this tariff has been improved by the removal of the upfront cost. This remains one of the cheaper deals out there. Total cost over 24 months is £768

Samsung Galaxy S8 | £49.99 upfront | 16GB data| Unlimited minutes and texts| £40pm Vodafone can’t match the other networks on the Galaxy S8 at the moment, but at least we’re finally starting to see some of its prices fall at Carphone Warehouse. 16GB is a stack of data to stream, surf and play with. You can get 32GB, too, but you have to pay a few extra quid a month. Total cost over 24 months is £1009.99 32GB

iPhone SE deals
The iPhone SE looks and feels exactly the same as the iPhone 5S. But instead of sporting two-year-old hardware it’s been updated, with a faster CPU and graphics, and the 12MP iSight camera straight out of the iPhone 6S. It’s a modern iPhone in the shape of an old iPhone, for people who like the old iPhones but want more up-to-date hardware.
iPhone SE 32GB | £30 upfront| Unlimited calls and texts| 1GB data | £23pm The generous cashback offer from Mobiles.co.uk that was making it the key retailer for the iPhone SE has now ceased to be on Vodafone. You can get this deal cheaper elsewhere, but we like the fact that with this one you get it direct from the source. Total cost over 24 months is £582

iPhone SE 32GB| FREE upfront| Unlimited calls and texts| 4GB data | £29pm

Trump stands with Japan, denounces North Korean aggression

Trump stands with Japan, denounces North Korean aggression
President Donald Trump ratcheted up the pressure on North Korea Monday, refusing to rule out eventual military action and declaring that the United States „will not stand“ for Pyongyang menacing America or its Asian allies.
Trump, on the first stop of his lengthy Asia trip, denounced North Korea as „a threat to the civilized world,“ and exhorted dictator Kim Jong Un to cease weapons testing like the missiles he has fired over Japanese territory in recent weeks. Though he stood in one of the Asia capitals in range of North Korea’s missiles, Trump did not modulate his fiery language, declaring that Pyongyang imperiled „international peace and stability.“
„Some people say my rhetoric is very strong but look what has happened with very weak rhetoric in the last 25 years,“ said Trump, who stood with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a Monday news conference.
Abe, who has taken a more hawkish view on North Korea than some of his predecessors, agreed with Trump’s assessment that „all options are on the table“ when dealing with Kim Jong Un and announced new sanctions against several dozen North Korea individuals. The two men also put a face on the threat posed by the North, earlier standing with anguished families of Japanese citizens snatched by Pyongyang’s agents.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump stood with nearly two dozen relatives, some of whom held photos of the missing. Seeking to increase pressure on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump pledged to work to return the missing to their families, saying „it’s a very, very sad number of stories that we’ve heard.“
North Korea has acknowledged apprehending 13 Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s, but claims they all died or have been released. But in Japan, where grieving relatives of the abducted have become a symbol of heartbreak on the scale of American POW families, the government insists many more were taken — and that some may still be alive.
Trump has delivered harsh denunciations of Kim, belittling him as „Little Rocket Man“ but suggested that it would be „a tremendous signal“ if North Korea returned the captives.
But Trump’s message on the second day of his five-country Asian tour was overshadowed by another tragic shooting back home.
Trump called the Texas church shooting that claimed at least 26 lives „an act of evil,“ denounced the violence in „a place of sacred worship“ and pledged the full support of the federal government. He later suggested that the shooter had mental health issues and waved off a question about gun control, saying of the massacre, „this isn’t a guns situation.“
Though Trump and Abe repeatedly touted their friendship, looming disagreements on trade could strain the friendship.
Trump complained Monday that Japan had been „winning“ for decades and rebuked the current relationship, saying the trade deals were „not fair and not open.“ He told a group of American and Japanese business leaders: the United States was open for business, but he wanted to reshape the nations‘ trade relationship, though he did not say how he would cut the trade deficit with Japan, which totaled nearly $70 billion last year.
He also downplayed the potentially contentious nature of the negotiations, though the Japanese government has not shown much appetite for striking a new bilateral trade agreement. Tokyo had pushed to preserve the Trans- Pacific Partnership, which Trump has abandoned.
„We will have more trade than anybody ever thought under TPP. That I can tell you,“ Trump said. He said the multinational agreement was not the right deal for the United States and that while „probably some of you in this room disagree… ultimately I’ll be proven to be right.“
Abe, for his part, publicly deflected questions about trade.
Trump also pushed Japan to buy more American military equipment after Abe was asked at the news conference about a local news report that Trump was disappointed that Japan had not shot North Korean missiles out of the sky.
„He will shoot ‚em out of the sky when he completes the purchase of lots of additional military equipment from the United States,“ Trump interrupted.
Japan’s constitution was revised after World War II to include a clause renouncing war and the country only spends about one percent of its GDP on defense, though Abe has slowly tried to remove some of its pacifist constraints.
Japan orchestrated a lavish formal welcome for the Trumps, complete with military honor guard and an audience with Japan’s Emperor Akihito and his wife, Empress Michiko, at the Imperial Palace.
As part of the pageantry, Trump and Abe took part in a traditional feeding of koi in a pond Monday. At first, both leaders spooned out small amounts of feed into the pond below. Abe then lightly tossed the remainder of his box into the pond below, while Trump more theatrically dumped the rest of his box down to the fish.
Abe laughed.

Shunned by American, Qatar Airways is turning to China Mortgage & Savings

0

Qatar Airways is buying almost 10% of Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific as the state-owned Gulf carrier faces difficulties in some Middle Eastern markets.
After its attempt to cozy up to American Airlines was rebuffed, Qatar Airways has turned its attentions elsewhere.
Facing problems in some Middle Eastern markets, the state-owned Gulf carrier announced Monday it’s buying almost 10% of Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific ( CPCAY) for $5.2 billion Hong Kong dollars ($662 million).
The deal makes Qatar Airways the third-biggest shareholder in Cathay after Swire Pacific ( SWRAY), a conglomerate that holds a majority stake, and Air China ( AIRYY). It also gives the Middle Eastern airline a stronger link to China, which is expected to surpass the U. S. as the world’s largest aviation market within five years.
The Cathay move comes three months after Qatar Airways dropped its efforts to buy a 10% stake in American Airlines ( AAL), whose CEO Doug Parker publicly knocked back the interest. U. S. airlines have engaged in a public fight with their Gulf rivals in recent years, accusing them of unfairly benefiting from billions of dollars in government subsidies .
Qatar Airways has also suffered from the major diplomatic crisis that has roiled its home country.
Powerful neighbors including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic ties and imposed a partial embargo on Qatar earlier this year, alleging Qatari support for terrorism. Qatar Airways is now banned from flying into those countries.
„Qatar Airways faces greater pressure to broaden its global footprint and a need to demonstrate its financial strength,“ said Corrine Png, an analyst at research firm Crucial Perspective.
However, Cathay investors didn’t take the news well. Shares plunged as much as 4.8% in Monday morning trading as the deal raises questions about the struggling Hong Kong airline’s long-term strategy. The shares closed down 1.5%.
The Qatar investment dampens speculation about a possible takeover of Cathay by Air China, wrote UBS analyst Eric Lin in a note to clients. That possibility has helped drive Cathay’s share price up more than 25% so far this year.
Png said that Qatar Airways is likely to be a vocal shareholder and will seek to influence Cathay’s business strategy. That could complicate the Asian airline’s turnaround efforts.
„Shareholder meetings are going to get complicated for Cathay,“ she said.
The airline made a loss of 575 million Hong Kong dollars ($74 million) in its most recent financial year and is cutting hundreds of jobs in a bid to slash costs. It has struggled in recent years in the face of rising competition from mainland Chinese carriers.
Qatar Airways‘ CEO Akbar Al Baker is known for his outspoken views on the industry. Earlier this year he described U. S. airlines as „crap.“
Png added that Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific could both benefit from the tie-up by feeding traffic into each others‘ networks.
A spokesperson for Cathay Pacific declined to comment on the deal beyond a stock market filing the company issued. Spokespeople for Qatar Airways and Air China didn’t immediately respond to requests for additional information.
The Cathay deal isn’t the first foreign excursion for Qatar Airways. The airline already owns 20% of International Airlines Group, the parent of British Airways and Iberia, and 20% of South America’s LATAM Airlines ( LTM).
Qatar Airways is buying the Cathay stake from Hong Kong industrial firm Kingboard Chemicals, according to a stock market filing.

Intel to Create new 8th Generation CPUs with AMD Radeon Graphics with HBM2 using EMIB

0

Today we have an announcement out of left field. Intel has formally revealed it has been working on a new series of processors that combine…
Today we have an announcement out of left field. Intel has formally revealed it has been working on a new series of processors that combine its high-performance x86 cores with AMD Radeon Graphics into the same processor package using Intel’s own EMIB multi-die technology. If that wasn’t enough, Intel also announced that it is bundling the design with the latest high-bandwidth memory, HBM2.
Intel announced its EMIB technology over the last twelve months, with the core theme being the ability to put multiple and different silicon dies onto the same package at a much higher bandwidth than a standard multi-chip package but at a much lower cost than using a silicon interposer. At Intel’s Manufacturing Day earlier this year, they even produced a slide (above) showcasing what might be possible: a processor package with the x86 cores made on one technology, the graphics made in another, perhaps different IO and memory or wireless technologies too. With EMIB, processor design can become a large game of Lego.
EMIB came to market with the latest Intel Altera FPGAs. By embedding the EMIB required silicon design into the main FPGA and each of the chipsets, the goal was to add multiple memory blocks as well as data transfer blocks in a mix and match scenario, allowing large customers to have the design tailored to what they require. The benefits of EMIB were clear, without the drawbacks of standard MCP design or the cost of interposers: it would also allow a design to go beyond the monolithic reticle limit of standard lithography processes. It was always expected that EMIB would have to find its way into the general processor market, as we start to see high-end server offerings approaching 900 mm2 over multiple silicon dies in a single package.
Since the EMIB announcements, Intel’s Manufacturing Day, and Hot Chips, word has been circulating about how Intel is going to approach this from a consumer stand point. As part of the requirements of Intel’s own integrated graphics solutions, a 2011 cross-licensing deal with NVIDIA was in place – this deal was set to expire from April 1 st 2017, and no mention of extending that deal was ever made public. A couple of rumors floated around that Intel were set to make a deal with AMD instead, as despite their x86 rivalry they were a preferred partner in these matters. Numerous outlets with connections in both AMD and Intel had difficulty prizing any information out. Historically Intel refuses to comment on such matters in advance. Other potential leaks include published benchmarks over at SiSoft, although nothing has been made concrete until today.

Ethics, Values and Practices for Software Professionals

0

Christiaan Verwijs has recently written about the need for a Hippocratic oath for software practitioners. Robert C. Martin and other commentators have made similar calls in recent months. We examine news in this space and the principles which support a professional practice of software development.
In a recent Medium article, Christiaan Verwijs raised the question of whether the power delegated to software developers should be grounded by an ethical code of conduct. In the piece titled „A Code of Ethics for (Agile) Software Developers?“, Verwijs explains that software developers have a huge impact on the world and a „responsibility to protect privacy, to create secure applications and to build products in a way that thrives on complexity.“ Verwijs goes on to say that:
‘software developer’ should be a profession, comparable to lawyers or physicians. One defining characteristic of a profession is that it has a Code of Ethics. Much like the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians or the Archimedean Oath taken by (some) engineers
The 2015 Volkswagen scandal demonstrated an extreme case of ethical compromise, resulting in an engineer being sentenced this August, for his role in manipulating emissions tests through a „clever and sneaky algorithm, installed in the emissions-control module, (which) detects when the cars were undergoing emissions testing.“
Speaking with IEEE’s Spectrum magazine at the time of the VW scandal, Dr. Yotam Lurie, a business ethics professor at Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, commented on the affair stating:
It’s shocking that the software engineers of Volkswagen overlooked and neglected their fiduciary responsibility as professionals. Professionals have a semi-regulatory responsibility within the organization to ensure safety, in this case environmental safety, even when this is less efficient or economical.
In an interview earlier this year, Dave West, product owner at Scrum.org, commented on situations which may lead to ethical ambiguity:
It’s also difficult to navigate what’s right and wrong if you’re pressured to meet deadlines, or your livelihood is on the line; a code of ethics can provide context and a framework for professionals to fall back on… I would love to see a standardized, industry code of ethics. We do have our own that falls under our mission of improving the profession of crafting software.
Robert C. Martin (Uncle Bob), spoke to InfoQ’s Ben Linders in September, about his own proposal for a Programmer’s Oath, which covers 9 declarations relating to craftsmanship, transparency and feedback-loops, opening with the moral tenet of “I will not produce harmful code.” Martin explains that:
There are two kinds of harm that a software developer can do to their users. The first is the most obvious. The software could fail. It seems perfectly reasonable that we should promise to do our very best to deliver software that does not fail.
Martin then goes on to describe the professional responsibility of building software which is structured to provide agility for change:
The second form of harm that programmers routinely do to their users is to harm the _structure_ of software. Users expect software to be easy to change. It is _soft_ ware after all. Users need their software systems to keep pace with the rapid change in society and technology. It seems perfectly reasonable that we should promise to do our very best to keep software soft.
In his 2015 paper titled „Professional Ethics of Software Engineers: An Ethical Framework,“ Lurie proposed a series of ethical questions which may be posed at each phase of the SDLC. Lurie explains the need for ethical considerations in software development:
…(there is) a relationship of power, which in this case is between the software developer (the professional) and the end-user (the customer), necessarily requires ethical checks and balances to regulate it and assure that it is not abused…
Lurie explains further that there are behaviours often considered as solely technical activities, which should be given ethical consideration:
More specifically, what appear to be primarily technical features of a software package.. such as quality, usability, reliability, accuracy, serviceability, and safety—in fact determine what the product can do and how it serves the end-user…these primarily technical features of a software product actually have important ethical ramifications
In a recent blog about “core values and practices” in building software, technical principle at ThoughtWorks, Evan Bottcher shares insights into “fundamental software engineering values” reflected in the “craft of building software.”
Bottcher writes that:
Values are statements of belief — that if these attributes are present, we’ll be able to build software that will not only delight users and customers, but will also allow for rapid change with confidence, both in the short and long term.
Bottcher builds on XP’s values and principles and presents four core values of fast feedback, simplicity, repeatability and clean code. These in turn support 8 core engineering practices:
Bother states that these values and principles should apply to all deliverables, including MVPs:
..there are trade-offs that can be made when a piece of software is genuinely throw-away. However, these are core values and practices that always apply — even for a short-term delivery, with an uncertain ongoing viability. Dropping these practices will make you slower, even in the short term..
Martin also stresses the importance of not compromising on the practices of the Programmer’s Oath:
Every programmer has had the experience of being significantly impeded by badly structured and tangled code. That code was „easy“ to write, but left the system in a state that slows everyone else down. The slower everyone else goes the more pressure they feel to take shortcuts that leave the system in ever worsening states. Repeat after me: „The only way to go fast, is to go well.“
Verwijs’ proposed code of ethics for software developers, provides suggestions for ethical conduct relating to user-centricity, developer and team relationships, honesty relating to failure and complexity, transparency, quality and fast feedback loops being used to guard user security and privacy. Verwijs’ ethical code is presented as an exercise. He explains the difficulty in adoption of a single code:
One problem with these ethical codes is that they only work when they are embraced by the majority of developers and when they become a part of educational training. We certainly haven’t reached that point (yet).
In the case of VW, the sentenced engineer was ordered to serve a 40 month jail term and pay a $200,000 penalty. Although the engineer did not mastermind the scandal, the prosecution’s memo stated that:
(he) knew that what he was doing was wrong but minimized his own moral responsibility for the fraud by reassuring himself that he was merely an engineer whose job it was to present practical solutions to problems, regardless of their propriety.

A new twist: Trump a victim of hackers years before election

0

At least 195 web addresses belonging to President Donald Trump, his family or business empire were hijacked by hackers possibly operating out of Russia.
Four years ago, well before the furor over allegations Moscow meddled in the 2016 election that put Donald Trump in the White House, at least 195 web addresses belonging to Trump, his family or his business empire were hijacked by hackers possibly operating out of Russia, The Associated Press has learned.
The Trump Organization denied the domain names were ever compromised. But a review of internet records by the AP and cybersecurity experts shows otherwise. And it was not until this past week, after the Trump camp was asked about it by the AP, that the last of the tampered-with addresses were repaired.
After the hack, computer users who visited the Trump-related addresses were unwittingly redirected to servers in St. Petersburg, Russia, that cybersecurity experts said contained malicious software commonly used to steal passwords or hold files for ransom. Whether anyone fell victim to such tactics is unclear.
A further mystery is who the hackers were and why they did it.
The discovery represents a new twist in the Russian hacking story, which up to now has focused mostly on what U. S. intelligence officials say was a campaign by the Kremlin to try to undermine Democrat Hillary Clinton’s candidacy and benefit Trump’s.
It is not known whether the hackers who tampered with the Trump addresses are the same ones who stole Democratic officials‘ emails and embarrassed the party in the heat of the campaign last year. Nor is it clear whether the hackers were acting on behalf of the Russian government.
The affected addresses, or domain names, included donaldtrump.org, donaldtrumpexecutiveoffice.com, donaldtrumprealty.com and barrontrump.com. They were compromised in two waves of attacks in August and September 2013, according to the review of internet records.
The attacks took place as Trump was preparing to travel to Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant, which was held on Nov. 9,2013, at a property owned by a wealthy Russian real estate developer.
Many of the addresses were not being used by Trump. Businesses and public figures commonly buy addresses for possible future use or to prevent them from falling into the hands of rivals or enemies. The Trump Organization and its affiliates own at least 3,300 in all.
According to security experts, the hackers hijacked the addresses by penetrating and altering the domain registration records housed at GoDaddy.com, a seller of web addresses.
Accounts at GoDaddy, like at any site that requires a user name and password, are often subject to malicious messages known as phishing attacks, which are designed to trick people to reveal that personal information to hackers.
Computer users who entered or clicked on one of those Trump addresses probably would have had no idea they were redirected to servers in Russia.
Within days after the AP asked the Trump Organization about the tampering, the affected web addresses were all corrected.
The White House referred questions to the Trump Organization. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.
GoDaddy spokesman Nick Fuller said the company had no breaches of its system in 2013 and has measures in place to monitor for malicious activity. Fuller would not discuss any customers in particular.
Some cybersecurity experts said there is an outside chance the tampering was a probe — an attempt to test security for an eventual effort to gather information on Trump or his business dealings. But those experts were only guessing.
There was no evidence the hackers ultimately broke into server computers at the Trump Organization or other Trump interests.
„This is beyond me,“ said Paul Vixie, CEO of the San Mateo, California-based internet security company Farsight Security Inc. „I have simply never seen a benefit accrue from an attack of this kind. I’m at loss, unless it’s a demonstration of capabilities.“
Vixie said the Trump Organization’s apparent failure to detect what was happening probably suggests inadequate cybersecurity at the company.
„There’s no way something like this could go by in the Bloomberg empire without this being seen,“ Vixie said.
