A new twist: Trump a victim of hackers years before election

0

At least 195 web addresses belonging to President Donald Trump, his family or business empire were hijacked by hackers possibly operating out of Russia.
Four years ago, well before the furor over allegations Moscow meddled in the 2016 election that put Donald Trump in the White House, at least 195 web addresses belonging to Trump, his family or his business empire were hijacked by hackers possibly operating out of Russia, The Associated Press has learned.
The Trump Organization denied the domain names were ever compromised. But a review of internet records by the AP and cybersecurity experts shows otherwise. And it was not until this past week, after the Trump camp was asked about it by the AP, that the last of the tampered-with addresses were repaired.
After the hack, computer users who visited the Trump-related addresses were unwittingly redirected to servers in St. Petersburg, Russia, that cybersecurity experts said contained malicious software commonly used to steal passwords or hold files for ransom. Whether anyone fell victim to such tactics is unclear.
A further mystery is who the hackers were and why they did it.
The discovery represents a new twist in the Russian hacking story, which up to now has focused mostly on what U. S. intelligence officials say was a campaign by the Kremlin to try to undermine Democrat Hillary Clinton’s candidacy and benefit Trump’s.
It is not known whether the hackers who tampered with the Trump addresses are the same ones who stole Democratic officials’ emails and embarrassed the party in the heat of the campaign last year. Nor is it clear whether the hackers were acting on behalf of the Russian government.
The affected addresses, or domain names, included donaldtrump.org, donaldtrumpexecutiveoffice.com, donaldtrumprealty.com and barrontrump.com. They were compromised in two waves of attacks in August and September 2013, according to the review of internet records.
The attacks took place as Trump was preparing to travel to Moscow for the Miss Universe pageant, which was held on Nov. 9,2013, at a property owned by a wealthy Russian real estate developer.
Many of the addresses were not being used by Trump. Businesses and public figures commonly buy addresses for possible future use or to prevent them from falling into the hands of rivals or enemies. The Trump Organization and its affiliates own at least 3,300 in all.
According to security experts, the hackers hijacked the addresses by penetrating and altering the domain registration records housed at GoDaddy.com, a seller of web addresses.
Accounts at GoDaddy, like at any site that requires a user name and password, are often subject to malicious messages known as phishing attacks, which are designed to trick people to reveal that personal information to hackers.
Computer users who entered or clicked on one of those Trump addresses probably would have had no idea they were redirected to servers in Russia.
Within days after the AP asked the Trump Organization about the tampering, the affected web addresses were all corrected.
The White House referred questions to the Trump Organization. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.
GoDaddy spokesman Nick Fuller said the company had no breaches of its system in 2013 and has measures in place to monitor for malicious activity. Fuller would not discuss any customers in particular.
Some cybersecurity experts said there is an outside chance the tampering was a probe — an attempt to test security for an eventual effort to gather information on Trump or his business dealings. But those experts were only guessing.
There was no evidence the hackers ultimately broke into server computers at the Trump Organization or other Trump interests.
«This is beyond me,» said Paul Vixie, CEO of the San Mateo, California-based internet security company Farsight Security Inc. «I have simply never seen a benefit accrue from an attack of this kind. I’m at loss, unless it’s a demonstration of capabilities.»
Vixie said the Trump Organization’s apparent failure to detect what was happening probably suggests inadequate cybersecurity at the company.
«There’s no way something like this could go by in the Bloomberg empire without this being seen,» Vixie said.

Bug Stops Some iPhone Uses from Typing 'I'

A bizarre predictive text error has left some iPhone users unable to type the word «I.» Instead, every time they attempt to use the English first-person pronoun, it gets replaced by the letter A and an unprintable unicode character, typically rendered as a question mark in a box, but occasionally five horizontal bars instead.
The error first surfaced almost a week ago, as scattered reports of the problem hit social media and the specialist press. It appears to affect users of iOS 10 [pictured above] and iOS 11, and has also been reported as happening to users of Apple’s Mac computers too.
The bug seems to be related to Apple’s cloud-based synchronization for predictive text — a relatively recent feature that allows users’ dictionaries to be shared using its iCloud service. When the phone learns a novel autocorrection, such as the name of a new contact, it will be shared with other devices owned by the same person.
Apple also uses machine learning to identify new words that are being used by its customers — for example, the name «Harambe,» which entered common usage after the shooting of a gorilla in Cincinnati Zoo — and syncs those words to iOS and macOS devices.
As well as the autocorrect, a number of other related problems seem to be hitting iOS devices. Some users have reported that a lower-case «I» character is appearing in the emoji picker, while others are seeing the strange unicode character where a normal «I» is written.
According to MacRumors, Apple support staff offered a temporary workaround using the iOS text replacement settings to replace all uses of a capital I with a lowercase i. It may be grammatically incorrect, but at least it will be legible.
Daylight Savings Crash
Users of Apple’s watchOS have avoided the predictive text bug, by virtue of not having a keyboard, but have fallen prey to their own odd error over the last few weeks: a hard crash of the device when asked for the weather.
Through trial and error, some worked out the likely culprit of the reset: daylight savings time. When an Apple watch running watchOS 4 is asked for the current weather in a location where the clocks are going back in the next 24 hours, it crashes.
Daylight savings is always tricky for developers, and Apple has a long history of minor errors caused by the clocks changing. In 2010, iPhone alarms failed to update after the clocks changed, resulting in a lot of flustered people arriving late to work. In 2011, some US iPhones managed to update the time, but in the wrong direction, falling back when they should have sprung forward. In between those two, iPhone alarms also failed completely on New Year’s Day 2011.

Iran dismisses allegations it gave missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen

0

Iran has dismissed allegations that it provided missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen, after a ballistic missile fired from Yemen came close to the Saudi capital of Riyadh on Saturday.
«These missiles have been manufactured by the Yemenis and their military industries,» he said.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels said they launched a Burqan 2H long-range missile at the Saudi airport.
Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies accuse Iran of providing material support to the Houthi rebels.
«Iran’s role and its direct command of its Houthi proxy in this matter constitutes a clear act of aggression that targets neighboring countries, and threatens peace and security in the region and globally» read a statement provided by the Saudi-led coalition on Monday.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said the incident «could rise to be considered an act of war» by Iran, the statement said. «The Coalition Command also affirms that the Kingdom reserves its right to respond to Iran in the appropriate time and manner,» the statement also said.
Several hours after the attack on the airport in Riyadh, the Saudi-led coalition sent a barrage of missile strikes into the Yemeni capital of Sanaa. It was the first attack at night on Sanaa in recent weeks.
Saudi Arabia has been fighting a proxy war in Yemen against Iran, which it accuses of arming the Houthi rebels.

0

OnePlus has posted a teaser image of what is believed to be the upcoming OnePlus 5T revealing the dual-camera setup and design of the handset, which looks strikingly similar to the OnePlus 5.
OnePlus has a history of teasing its upcoming products by releasing mysterious images or revealing some specifications ahead of the official announcement. And now, OnePlus has posted a teaser image of what is believed to be the OnePlus 5T judging by the hashtags used with the tweet. The image gives us a glimpse of the handset from the back, which looks quite similar to its predecessor, featuring a dual-camera setup with a LED flash.
While the teaser didn’t confirm any specifications, we’ve seen countless rumors over the past few weeks. Most of the reports hint that it will come with a bezel-free, edge-to-edge 6-inch display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and top-of-the-line hardware.
The device is expected to come with a Snapdragon 835 processor, a 20MP dual-camera setup on the back, and Android 8.0 Oreo as its operating system. Rumors suggest there will be two versions: one featuring 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage while the more expensive variant will come with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
The company has already confirmed that the OnePlus 5T will launch on November 13. The company’s CEO Pete Lau also revealed some interesting details about the handset, including the fact that it will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack. Nonetheless, we’ll find out all the official details, including availability and pricing, later this month.

Texas church attack leaves 26 dead, small community reeling

0

Among the 26 people killed in an attack at a small South Texas church were tight-knit neighbors and family members, ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old.
A gunman dressed in black tactical-style gear and armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a small South Texas church, killing 26 people in an attack that claimed tight-knit neighbors and multiple family members ranging in age from 5 to 72 years old.
Once the shooting started Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, there was likely «no way» for congregants to escape, said Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. Officials said about 20 others were wounded.
«He just walked down the center aisle, turned around and my understanding was shooting on his way back out,» said Tackitt, who said the gunman also carried a handgun but that he didn’t know if it was fired. Tackitt described the scene as «terrible.»
«It’s unbelievable to see children, men and women, laying there. Defenseless people,» he said.
Authorities didn’t identify the attacker during a news conference Sunday night. But two other officials — one a U. S. official and one in law enforcement — identified him as Devin Kelley. They spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the investigation.
The U. S. official said Kelley lived in a San Antonio suburb and didn’t appear to be linked to organized terrorist groups. Investigators were looking at social media posts Kelley made in the days before the attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon.
Kelley received a bad conduct discharge from the Air Force for assaulting his spouse and child, and was sentenced to 12 months’ confinement after a 2012 court-martial. Kelley served in Logistics Readiness at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico from 2010 until his 2014 discharge, Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said.
At the news conference, the attacker was described only as a white man in his 20s who was wearing black tactical gear and a ballistic vest when he pulled into a gas station across from the church, about 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio, around 11:20 a.m.
The gunman crossed the street and started firing the rifle at the church, said Freeman Martin, a regional director of the Texas Department of Safety, then continued firing after entering the white wood-frame building, where an 11 a.m. service was scheduled.
As he left, the shooter was confronted by an armed resident who «grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect,» Martin said. A short time later, the suspect was found dead in his vehicle at the county line.
Federal agents, including ATF investigators and the FBI’s evidence collection team, swarmed the small rural community of just hundreds of residents.
Several weapons were found inside the vehicle and Martin said it was unclear if the attacker died of a self-inflicted wound or if he was shot by the resident who confronted him. He said investigators weren’t ready to discuss a possible motive.
Martin said 23 of the dead were found in the church, two were found outside and one died after being taken to a hospital.
The man who confronted Kelley had help from another local resident, Johnnie Langendorff, who told KSAT TV that he was driving past the church as the shooting happened. He didn’t identify the armed resident but said the man exchanged gunfire with the gunman, then asked to get in Langendorff’s truck and the pair followed as the gunman drove away.
Langendorff said the gunman eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed. He said the other man walked up to the vehicle with his gun drawn and the suspect did not move. He stayed there for at least five minutes, until police arrived.
«I was strictly just acting on what’s the right thing to do,» Langendorff said.
Among those killed was the church pastor’s 14-year-old daughter, Annabelle Pomeroy. Pastor Frank Pomeroy and his wife, Sherri, were both out of town when the attack occurred, Sherri Pomeroy wrote in a text message.
«We lost our 14-year-old daughter today and many friends,» she wrote. «Neither of us has made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as i can.»
Church member Nick Uhlig, 34, who wasn’t at Sunday’s service, told the AP that his cousin, who was 8 months pregnant, and her in-laws were among those killed. He later told the Houston Chronicle that three of his cousin’s children also were slain.
President Donald Trump, who was in Japan, called the shooting an «act of evil,» later calling the gunman «a very deranged individual.»
Sunday evening, two sheriff’s vans were parked outside the gate of a cattle fence surrounding the address listed for Kelley on the rural, western outskirts of New Braunfels, north of San Antonio.
Ryan Albers, 16, who lives across the road, said he heard intensifying gunfire coming from that direction in recent days.
«It was definitely not just a shotgun or someone hunting,» Albers said. «It was someone using automatic weapon fire.»
The church has posted videos of its Sunday services on a YouTube channel, raising the possibility that the shooting was captured on video.
In a video of its Oct. 8 service, a congregant who spoke and read Scripture pointed to the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting a week earlier as evidence of the «wicked nature» of man. That shooting left 58 dead and more than 500 injured.
Gov. Greg Abbott called Sunday’s attack the worst mass shooting in Texas history. It came on the eighth anniversary of a shooting at the Texas’ Fort Hood, where 13 people were killed and 31 others wounded by a former U. S. Army major.
The previous deadliest mass shooting in Texas had been a 1991 attack in Killeen, when a mentally disturbed man crashed his pickup truck through a restaurant window at lunchtime and started shooting people, killing 23 and injuring more than 20 others.
The University of Texas was the site of one of the most infamous mass shootings in modern American history, when U. S. Marine sniper Charles Whitman climbed the Austin campus’ clock tower in 1966 and began firing on stunned people below, killing 13 and wounding nearly three dozen others. He had killed his wife and mother before heading to the tower, one victim died a week later and medical examiners eventually attributed a 17th death to Whitman in 2001.

Donald Trump: Trump hat keine Geduld mehr mit Nordkorea

0

Mittelstreckenraketen.

North Korean airline employee arranged flights for suspects in Kim Jong-nam assassination

A police officer testified on Monday at the trial of two women accused of killing the half-brother of North Korea’s leader that four suspects at large believed to have plotted with the women were North Koreans who fled Malaysia immediately after the assassination.
Police investigating officer Wan Azirul Nizam Che Wan Aziz also said an employee from North Korea’s state-owned carrier, Air Koryo, arranged tickets for the four men so they could fly after the attack on Kim Jong-nam was carried out in a crowded departure terminal at Kuala Lumpur airport last on February 13.
Wan Azirul, who earlier identified the four only as Mr Y, Mr Chang, Hanamori and James, revealed their full identifies as the trial entered a second month.
The two young women – Siti Aisyah of Indonesia and Doan Thi Huong of Vietnam, who are accused of smearing VX nerve agent onto Kim’s face – are the only two suspects detained in the brazen assassination of Kim, an outcast from North Korea’s ruling family who lived abroad in virtual exile for years. Both women pleaded not guilty at the start of their trial on October 2 to murder charges that carry mandatory death sentences if they are convicted.
Wan Azirul testified on Monday that Hanamori, whom he earlier identified as the mastermind, is Ri Jae Nam, 57, and that Mr Chang, who was seen in airport security video with Aisyah, is Hong Song Hac, 34.
Mr Y, seen in the video with Doan, is Ri Ji Hyon, 33, and the fourth suspect, James, is O Jong Gil, 54, Wan Azirul said.
He said the four men entered Malaysia on different days beginning last January 31.
Interpol put out a red alert for the arrest of the four in March following a request from Malaysian police.
Wan Azirul said three of the men flew off to Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, more than three hours after the attack on Kim, but could not remember where the fourth suspect flew to. Police earlier said the four are believed to be back in North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang.
Wan Azirul said police found a photo of another North Korean, Ri Ji U, 30, also known as James, in Aisyah’s cellphone. But there was no record of this person entering or exiting Malaysia, he told the court.
Earlier in the trial, the court was shown airport security video of the four suspects at large. O Jong Gil was seen checking in at the main airport terminal more than two hours after the other three left on the same flight.
The defendants’ defence lawyers have said Huong and Aisyah were duped by suspected North Korean agents into believing they were playing a harmless prank for a television show. Prosecutors contend the women’s conduct showed they knew they were handling poison.
Malaysia has never directly accused North Korea, but South Korea’s spy agency has claimed the attack was part of a plot by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to kill a brother he reportedly never met. Kim Jong-nam was not known to have actively been seeking influence over his younger brother, but had years earlier spoken out publicly against his family’s dynastic rule.

The iPhone X launched to much excitement last week, and Apple’s latest handset has received glowing reviews. But the company has issued a warning about the Super Retina display — despite describing it as «best OLED display that has ever shipped in a smartphone.»
Just like Google’s Pixel 2 XL, Apple warns that the iPhone X could suffer from «burn-in» issues. The company also refers to «slight visual changes» such as «image persistence» that may follow extended long-term use — but offers up a few tips to minimize the problems.

Apple is quick to point out that the issues it highlights are «characteristic of OLED» and should be considered «normal behaviour.» On its support pages, the company says that: «If you look at an OLED display off-angle, you might notice slight shifts in color and hue.»
But it is the risk of bur-in which is likely to be of most concern to iPhone X owners. Apple explains:
Apple has a few tips which it says will help to improve things:

NHS offers smartphone GP appointments

0

Trials will take place in London where 3.5 million patients will be able to have video consultations via smartphone.
A 24-hour service has been launched for NHS patients, offering GP consultations via videolink on smartphones.
The pilot scheme will initially cover 3.5 million patients in Fulham, west London.
Patients will be able to check their symptoms through the mobile app and then have video consultations within two hours of booking.
The Royal College of GPs has warned the service may not help patients with complex needs.
The new free service has been launched by a group of London GPs and the online healthcare provider Babylon.
Patients joining will leave their existing practice, with their records transferred to a group of five central London surgeries.
Dr Mobasher Butt, who is part of the team behind the GP at Hand service, told BBC Radio’s Today programme: «It’s high time that NHS patients were given the opportunity to benefit from technology to improve access to healthcare.
«We’ve benefited from this kind of technology in so many different aspects of our lives, whether that be shopping or banking, and it’s really time that we were able to do that in healthcare for NHS patients.»
Jane Barnacle, director of patients and information at NHS England London, said GP practices were right to carefully test innovative new technologies that could improve free NHS services for their patients while also freeing up staff time.
But the Royal College of GPs is concerned the new service might only work for younger healthier commuters and not those with complex health conditions.
Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard, who chairs the RCPG, said: «We are really worried that schemes like this are creating a twin-track approach to NHS general practice and that patients are being ‘cherry-picked’, which could actually increase the pressures on traditional GPs based in the community.
«We understand that with increasingly long waiting times to see a GP, an online service is convenient and appealing, but older patients and those living with more complex needs want continuity of care and the security of their local practice where their GPs know them.
«We notice there is an extensive list of patient conditions such as frailty, pregnancy and mental health conditions that are the essence of general practice and which GPs deal with every day, but which are not eligible for this service.
«We are also concerned that patients are being given the option of switching back to their local surgery if they are not satisfied with the level of service offered by the app.
«As well as issues with patient confidentiality and the safety of the patient record, it is hard to see how this could be achieved without adding to the huge burden of red tape that GPs are already grappling with.
«While this scheme is backed by the NHS and offers a free service to patients, it is undoubtedly luring GPs away from front-line general practice at a time when we are facing a severe workforce crisis and hardworking GPs are struggling to cope with immense workloads.»
