Samsung releases exclusive color of Galaxy Note8 in Taiwan

0

It has only been a week since the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Note8 and while the world is busy pre-ordering, those in Taiwan will be treated to a special color not available in other regions.
After months of leaks and rumors, Samsung’s Galaxy Note8 was announced early last week with a release date in the United States of September 15. While pre-orders for the Midnight Black and Orchid Gray variants of the device are currently underway, it appears that those in Taiwan will gain access to a color not available to those in the US.
Although there are currently four different colors available of the Galaxy Note8 globally – Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Gray, and Deep Sea Blue – the firm has made something special for Taiwan, as they will be getting an exclusive color in the form of Star Pink. While the back cover is vibrant, the color also carries over to the metal frame, along with the stylus and the buttons.
The Star Pink Note8 will tout the same specifications as its other counterparts, making use of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB RAM. Those interested and in the region can purchase the handset for 34,200 TWD or around $1,130 USD.

North Korean Missile Test Was Practice For Guam

0

Kim Jong Un ordered the missile drill to be conducted for the first time from its capital, Pyongyang
North Korea said on Wednesday it had conducted a test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) to counter U. S. and South Korean military drills and as a first step in military action in the Pacific to „contain“ the U. S. territory of Guam.
The North’s leader Kim Jong Un ordered the missile drill to be conducted for the first time from its capital, Pyongyang, and said it was necessary to undertake more exercises with the Pacific as the target, the North’s KCNA news agency said.
„The current ballistic rocket launching drill like a real war is the first step of the military operation of the KPA in the Pacific and a meaningful prelude to containing Guam, “ KCNA quoted Kim as saying. The Korean People’s Army or KPA is the North’s military.
Earlier this month, North Korea threatened to fire four missiles into the sea near Guam, home to a major military presence, after U. S. President Donald Trump said the North would face „fire and fury“ if it threatened the United States.
Tuesday’s test was of the same Hwasong-12 missile Kim had threatened to use on Guam, but the test flight took it another direction, over northern Japan’s Hokkaido and into the North Pacific Ocean.
Trump, who has vowed not to let North Korea develop nuclear missiles that can hit the mainland United States, said the world had received North Korea’s latest message „loud and clear“.
„Threatening and destabilizing actions only increase the North Korean regime’s isolation in the region and among all nations of the world. All options are on the table, “ Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.
The launch came as U. S. and South Korean forces conducted annual military exercises on the Korean peninsula, angering Pyongyang which sees the war games as a preparation for invasion.
North Korea has conducted dozens of ballistic missile tests under Kim in defiance of U. N. sanctions, but firing a projectile over mainland Japan was a rare and provocative move.
Reports of the launch by North Korean media were lacking the usual boasts of technical advances, indicating the test may not have accomplished its intended technical goals.
For more on North Korea, watch Fortune’s video:
The 2,700 km (1,680 miles) the missile flew before splashing down was much shorter and at a lower trajectory than that of an earlier and lofted launch of the same missile. The May launch would have had a range of about 4,800 km on a standard trajectory, an expert on missile technology, David Wright said.
„It is not clear what new North Korea would have learned from this launch that is relevant to a long-range missile, “ Wright of the Union of Concerned Scientists said.
The shorter range points to an intended early cutting of the engine thrust or a possible mechanical problem, as the trajectory taken would not have been useful in simulating re-entry or heating of the missile, Wright wrote in a blog post.
Japan reacted sharply to the missile overflight, warnings residents to take cover as the missile approached and raising protests at the United Nations.
The United States has said before that all options, including military, are on the table, although its preference is for a diplomatic solution.
U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the launch was „absolutely unacceptable and irresponsible“ and that the Security Council now needed to take serious action.
The Security Council earlier this month unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea after it staged two long-range missile launches in July.
South Korea and the United States had discussed deploying additional „strategic assets“ on the Korean peninsula, South Korea’s presidential Blue House said in a statement, without giving more details.

NBN knocks back Telstra receipt monetisation plan

0

NBN has said it cannot see how its position would be improved by consenting to Telstra’s securitisation plan.
Telstra’s attempt to monetise certain National Broadband Network (NBN) receipts has been knocked back by NBN, the company has revealed.
„Telstra announced a proposal to the market on 17 August to monetise a portion of its locked-in recurring NBN receipts, “ Australia’s incumbent telco provider said in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on Wednesday morning.
„This proposal was subject to the agreement and a number of steps including approvals and consents from investors, the Commonwealth government, and NBN Co. While the proposal is well progressed and supported by equity and debt investors, Telstra has been advised this morning that technical consents from NBN Co will not be forthcoming.“
According to Telstra, NBN had said: „Essentially, we can’t see how NBN’s position can be protected/improved by Telstra’s securitisation plan, especially given the unpredictability of our operating environment in the 2020s.“
Telstra had earlier this month said the NBN would impact its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) by around AU$3 billion due to NBN’s connectivity virtual circuit (CVC) pricing.
„Given the latest outlook of NBN CVC charges, which we estimate will more than double over the coming years, we now expect the impact is likely to be at least at the top end of this range, around AU$3 billion, “ CEO Andy Penn said during the company’s FY17 financial results call.
As a result, Telstra had said it was aiming to „monetise certain NBN receipts“ in an effort to support a capital management program.
„If we were to proceed with these plans, it would involve approximately 40 percent of the total receipts that are expected, representing the already locked-in receipts for fibre and exchanges, “ Penn explained at the time.
„The scale of the proposed transaction is approximately AU$5-5.5 billion, with Telstra to retain some equity interest. Our intention would be to use the proceeds to reduce debt by around AU$1 billion, with the balance to support a capital management program to enhance shareholder returns, most likely through a series of on and off market buy-backs.“
Telstra is currently the leading NBN services provider, with a market share across all network technologies excluding satellite of 52 percent, or 1,176,000 connections, after adding 676,000 customers during FY17.
Other NBN effects on Telstra’s financial results meant Telstra Wholesale’s income grew by 7.2 percent to AU$2.8 billion due to an increase in NBN ISA ownership receipts as the rollout gains pace; and Telstra Operations income growing by AU$1.2 billion due to an increase in NBN commercial works.
For the full year to June 30, Telstra announced a net profit of AU$3.9 billion, down 32.7 percent from AU$5.8 billion due to the AU$1.8 billion from the sale of Autohome shares included in the FY16 net profit. Excluding this, net profit was up by just 1.1 percent year on year.
EBITDA was AU$10.7 billion, up 2 percent from AU$10.5 billion, while revenue was AU$26 billion, down 2.7 percent from AU$26.7 billion a year earlier.

Rüstungsindustrie: Deutschland kontrolliert Verbleib exportierter Waffen

0

Harvey victims say stores are price-gouging

0

Houston residents say stores are unfairly raising prices for essentials in wake of Hurricane Harvey
HOUSTON — Complaints are pouring in to Texas officials that some Houston businesses are charging exorbitant prices for essential goods, with one report claiming that a local store was charging as much as $100 for a case of drinking water.
During a natural disaster like Hurricane Harvey, it’s illegal to charge consumers excessively prices for basic necessities.
„You’re not supposed to artificially inflate prices of things that are emergency or needed during a disaster, “ Dan Parsons of the Greater Houston and South Texas Better Business Bureau told CBS News in an interview.
The Texas attorney general’s office has already fielded more than 600 complaints since the storm hit on August 25, mostly about drinking water and gasoline. At some gas stations, prices has surge to as much as $10 a gallon. Although prices at the pump have risen as Harvey disrupted Gulf Coast oil refineries, the national average is $2.37 a gallon, according to AAA. Houston-area hotels have also been reported for tripling and quadrupling prices.
The Texas attorney general’s office said anyone who thinks they’re being gouged on prices should first raise the issue with the seller. If the matter can’t be resolved one-on-one, consumers should save their receipts and file an official complaint.
More than 30 states have passed anti-gouging laws. In Texas, violators can be fined as much as $20,000. If the victim is over 65, the fine can be as high as $250,000.
The Better Business Bureau says gouging is a common problem following natural disasters.
„You want credit card purchases, something you can go back to and say, ‚Look, here’s the prevailing market price. Here’s what I was charged, ‚ and even better go back in three weeks and say, ‚Look what the price is now, ‚ “ Parsons said.
