LG's V30 could hit the market with a launch price of $749.99

0

Although LG did not announce a price or release date for its upcoming V30 handset, it might have let the price leak if details for a contest being held by the firm are to be believed.
After being teased for close to a month, LG finally revealed the V30 to the world at IFA Berlin. The firm touted the smartphone’s OLED FullVision display with Floating Bar, dual 16MP cameras, its 32-bit Advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC, and an assortment of other features. While it wouldn’t mention a release date, it would also omit the handset’s price.
Well, it appears that some eagle-eyed folks might have uncovered the retail price of the phone by digging through some details. The firm is currently holding a competition on Twitter where it is giving away three units of the recently announced handset. The tweet also includes a link to the full terms of the contest, which holds the key to the price of the V30.
In Section Eight, the firm talks about the value of the prize and states that the V30 has an approximate retail value (ARV) of $749.99. Of course, this could be just a number established for the contest, but it seems like an accurate price, considering last year’s V20 was around the same ballpark. Naturally, we will have to wait until LG announces something official, but this should give those interested a ballpark number for the time being.

HONG KONG: A week after two typhoons hit Hong Kong, the city is bracing for another storm – Typhoon Mawar, which is expected to hit the city on Sunday (Sep 3) .
Flagship carrier Cathay Pacific on Saturday cancelled 20 flights scheduled to arrive or depart Hong Kong on Sunday and Monday, including flights to and from Singapore.
Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot both said in response to queries that they have not cancelled any flights to or from Hong Kong. SIA said that its Hong Kong flights are operating normally, although it is monitoring the situation closely.
Typhoon Mawar is expected to make landfall over the coast of eastern Guangdong on Sunday, and to be closest to Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon, according to the Hong Kong Observatory’s website.
As of 1pm on Saturday, the city had hoisted its standby typhoon signal No. 1, with Typhoon Mawar centred about 320km off Hong Kong.
Mawar will be the third storm to hit the city in two weeks. One of the strongest typhoons on record, Hato, caused serious flooding and mass flight cancellations in Hong Kong and the neighbouring gaming hub of Macau. At least 10 people were killed  in Macau and another eight in nearby Guangdong.
Four days later, Tropical Storm Pakhar brought heavy rain and winds of up to 130kmh to the two cities, causing 300 flights to be cancelled or delayed.
Hong Kong and the surrounding region is regularly besieged by typhoons between July and October. The city saw its strongest storm in 1962 during Typhoon Wanda, which killed 130 and left 72,000 people homeless in Hong Kong alone.

Rangers outlast Angels 10-9, move up in AL wild-card race

0

Carlos Gomez scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch and the Texas Rangers moved up in the AL wild-card race, holding off the Los Angeles Angels 10-9 in a game that lasted more than 4 ½ hours
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Despite mounting injuries and adversity, the Texas Rangers are still clinging to their wild-card hopes.
Hours after getting confirmation that star third baseman Adrian Beltre was likely done for the season with a strained left hamstring, the Rangers outlasted the Los Angeles Angels 10-9 in a back-and-forth game that lasted more than 4 ½ hours.
«Probably the best character win we’ve had all year. That’s how you sum it up, » Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.
«Typically when you give the lead up a couple of times, you don’t win games like that. We had a lot of different players play big in this game tonight from the pitching staff to the guys in the batter’s box. It’s just everybody up and down played a part in this win, » he said.
Carlos Gomez scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on wild pitch in a matchup that took 4 hours, 33 minutes, setting franchise records for both teams as the longest nine-inning game in club history.
Texas stopped the Angels’ three-game winning streak and closed within three games of Minnesota for the second wild-card spot. Los Angeles is 1 ½ games behind the Twins.
The Angels loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth before Alex Claudio (4-1) retired Eric Young Jr. on a grounder. Young had entered in the eighth as a pinch-runner for Albert Pujols, who had four hits and drove in four runs.
Pujols now has 1,904 RBIs and moved past Willie Mays into ninth place on the career list.
«That’s what it’s going to take, Albert had another great night, » Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. «He’s going to be huge and it’s good for him to start swinging the bat at this time.»
Cam Bedrosian (4-4) threw the wild pitch that let Gomez score.
«Cam gets the first two outs then just lost his release, » Scioscia said. «Stuff was coming out of his hand really hot, the first two hitters he looked really sharp and then he just lost it.»
Brandon Phillips and Justin Upton made their Angels debuts a day after being acquired in trade. Upton doubled, singled and scored a run, and also made an error in left field. Phillips had a hit and scored.
It was 9-all when Gomez walked in the eighth, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Martin Maldonado. He scored when Bedrosian’s pitch in the dirt to Mike Napoli skipped away from Maldonado.
«I took a good lead there and I knew the pitcher had a lot of confidence in the guy behind the plate, » Gomez said.
Gomez and Shin-Soo Choo homered in the sixth as Texas took a 9-4 lead.
Joey Gallo also connected for Texas, hitting his 37th homer and tying Yankees rookie Aaron Judge for the most in the AL.
Rangers starter Cole Hamels allowed five hits and four runs in five innings.
HURRICANE RELIEF
Ten percent of the revenue from ticket sales, concessions and merchandise during this series will be donated to relief efforts for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
The Rangers wore shirts during batting practice with the words «No matter where we ball, Texas stands tall, » with the Rangers and Astros logos underneath. The shirts will be on sale to the public later this week with proceeds going to hurricane relief.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Angels: RHP Garrett Richards is close to returning from a biceps injury and could be activated this weekend.
Rangers: RHP Keone Kela (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session and is scheduled to throw another bullpen next week.
UP NEXT
Angels: RHP Ricky Nolasco is making his fourth start and looking for his first win against the Rangers.
Rangers: RHP A. J. Griffin is making his 14th start and working on extended five days of rest after a 6-5 loss to Oakland on Aug. 27.

Angels' rally comes up just short in lengthy 10-9 loss to Rangers

0

It was one of the longest nine-inning games ever played, replete with twists, controversial challenges, and a lot of participants.
It was one of the longest nine-inning games ever played, replete with twists, controversial challenges and a lot of participants.
Ultimately, the Angels lost 10-9 to Texas on Friday night at Globe Life Park.
At four hours, 33 minutes, their disheartening defeat was the third-longest nine-inning game in the history of baseball. Two mid-2000s games between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox were the only ones to last longer.
So much earlier, Rangers starter Cole Hamels walked both Brandon Phillips and Mike Trout to begin. Justin Upton lost a hit on a sharp play by Joey Gallo at third base, but Albert Pujols doubled into right field to score Phillips and Trout.
The Angels introduced both Phillips, hitting leadoff, and Upton, hitting third. into their lineup. They were surprise acquisitions made ahead of Thursday’s deadline to add playoff-eligible players, and they paid off offensively Friday, but not defensively.
Taking a 2-0 lead to the mound, Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs induced a ground ball from Delino DeShields. But Phillips took his time fielding it and threw late to first base. DeShields then stole second, and Skaggs walked Shin-Soo Choo. As Elvis Andrus batted, both men stole another base, and DeShields scored when Andrus grounded out to shortstop. Choo jogged home when Nomar Mazara laced a double into center field.
Skaggs found more trouble in the second. He issued a leadoff walk to Mike Napoli, earned one popout, and allowed a double and another walk to load the bases. Choo then lofted a routine fly ball into left field, where Upton jogged to it but could not field it. The ball glanced off of his glove, allowing the go-ahead run to score. Next, Andrus blooped a single into short right field, where three pursuing Angels could not reach it. That scored two more runs.
Joey Gallo’s massive home run to begin the third made the score 6-2 and forced Skaggs’ exit.
“This loss is on me, ” Skaggs said. “I can’t shy away from it.”
Angels manager Mike Scioscia turned first to Fernando Salas, then Jason Gurka, then Blake Wood, then Keynan Middleton, then Jose Alvarez, then Noe Ramirez. On Sept. 1, bullpens run amok. Both teams boasted 10-man bullpens, and the Angels used nine relievers, including Troy Scribner, who started for them Tuesday.
The first three Angels to emerge from the bullpen threw well. Middleton struggled in the sixth, serving up three consecutive hard-hit balls to begin the inning. The first went as a triple, the second a 447-foot home run. After a lineout and a groundout, Carlos Gomez launched a home run to left off a hanging slider.
In the Angels’ half of the third, Trout stole second despite being picked off. Pujols nearly brought him in with a 399-foot drive to center field, caught on the warning track. Two innings later, Pujols successfully drove home Trout and Upton, singling to center after both men had notched two-out hits. The Angels then extended the rally with an error and a hits batsman, loading the bases for C. J. Cron, who ripped a ball to third base, right at Gallo. He slammed his helmet to the dirt in anger.
A bases-loaded situation came to Cron again in the seventh, this time without an out. He drilled a double to the right-field wall, scoring two. Up next, Martin Maldonado battled left-hander Jake Diekman to eight pitches but struck out swinging while chasing a slider. Cliff Pennington notched a sacrifice fly to score a run before the inning ended.
When Trout popped out to start the eighth, it snapped his career-high streak of reaching base in 11 plate appearances, one short of the franchise record set by Bobby Grich in 1984. Justin Upton followed Trout’s out with a single to left, and Pujols next sprayed a single to center for his fourth hit of the night. Andrelton Simmons’ tapper back to the mound scored Upton, and Kole Calhoun’s sacrifice fly scored Eric Young Jr., who pinch-ran for Pujols and stole second base.
That tied the game 9-9. Texas quickly untied it in the bottom of the eighth, scoring the go-ahead run on a Cam Bedrosian wild pitch.
In the top of the ninth, down the one run, the Angels again rallied, loading the bases with two outs on two singles and an intentional walk.
A controversial call at second base, confirmed after replay review, hampered their chances. Brandon Phillips appeared safe at second, but umpire Mike Estabrook ruled him out.
“I think he was safe, ” Scioscia said afterward.
Batting in Pujols’ spot, Young stepped up and grounded into a game-ending forceout.

Five revealing things you may not know North Korea has imported from China

0

Imports thatgive a window into life in the hermit state
China is widely known as North Korea’s primary trading partner – a status it attained as the Hermit Kingdom increasingly isolated itself from the world. The two communist countries’ friendly ties have been strained by accusations that China is sustaining the development of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme, which more and more poses a threat to the US and its allies in the region.
Although China has agreed to stop buying North Korean iron, lead and coal as part of UN-approved sanctions last month, North Korea continues to be a major importer of Chinese goods. Imports from China represented 85 per cent of North Korea’s overall US$3.47 billion in imports in 2015, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, a US-based trade monitor.
A South China Morning Post examination of North Korea’s imports from China from the start of 2016 through mid-2017, showed that its importing of five rarely discussed items – out of more than 800 categories of imported goods – is about much more than mere survival.
(1) Gaming equipment
North Korea announced through its state-run media outlet Arirang Meari last week that the country’s new shooting simulation video game – in which US soldiers are the enemy – has “become very popular” as tension rises with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump recently exchanging escalatory threats with overtones of war.
The video game “Hunting Yankee” was the latest used by Pyongyang as propaganda to cultivate patriotism, which followed the war-themed games “Confrontation War, ” “Guardian” and “Goguryeo Battlefield”, also released earlier this month.
It was unclear whether these games were designed to be played on computers or phones. Given that most North Koreans do not own their own computers for personal home use, the importing of “video game controllers and gaming equipment inside indoor entertainment venues” from China could offer a glimpse into the closed country’s gaming and entertainment culture.
The North Korean export industry that’s making the most of China’s coal ban
North Korea has spent over US$2 million on purchases of entertainment items under this category in the past 1.5 years. This grouping includes not only hand-held game consoles but also pool tables, dice and card games and coin operated electronic game machines, according to Chinese customs data.
The quantity of imports in this category, however, is in sharp decline as the number fell from 7 million pieces in the first quarter of 2016 to just above half a million pieces in the latest quarter of 2017.
(2) Surveillance cameras
The world was taken by surprise when it first learnt that North Korea had bought 85,570 surveillance cameras from China from 2009 to 2011, according to South Korea’s Chosun newspaper. But it will now come as no surprise to observers that North Korea imported nearly 20 times that number in the 1.5 years to mid-2017, reflecting a trend toward tighter monitoring of activity within the country.
A total of 1,669,725 units were recorded under the “surveillance cameras, projectors and TV antennas” group of Chinese exports to North Korea. No breakdown was provided that would show how many of those items were surveillance cameras.
Pyongyang replaced or newly installed more surveillance and security infrastructure in the country’s border region with northern China last December, according to Daily NK, a South Korean website that claims to have a network of informants in North Korea.
The reason for the move was damage to facilities from a flood last September, but also to address attempted defections from the country.
“Border control has actually grown a lot tighter ever since President Xi Jinping and Kim Jong-un both came into power, the countries became increasingly strict towards handling defection, and therefore both sides have increased surveillance and patrolling around the border area, ” said Sokeel Park, director of research and strategy for Liberty, an NGO based in both Seoul and the US, which rescues North Korean refugees hiding in China and resettles them in South Korea or the US.
(3) Telephones
In case surveillance cameras are not sufficiently effective in monitoring North Koreans, analysts believe Pyongyang has increased imports of phones to increase ways of spying on its people.
In the past year, a growing trend has been observed in the country’s imports under the category of “telephones, including those for cellular networks or for other wireless network” – meaning both corded and mobile phone devices.
North Korea imported 144,891 units of Chinese phones in the first quarter of 2016, but the number recorded in the past three quarters was kept at more than 400,000. Pyongyang bought 426,500 Chinese phones from April to June this year.
Some analysts believe the phones may be used for more than communication. “By giving citizens new networked technologies like mobile phones and tablets, the government is able to automatically censor unsanctioned content and observe everything citizens are doing on their devices remotely, ” Nat Kretchun, who authored a report titled “Compromising Connectivity” this year on North Korea’s digitalisation, told Reuters.
China’s imports from North Korea fall as sanctions start to bite
Reuters reported in 2015 that North Korea’s official mobile phone network, Koryolink, had around 3 million subscribers in a country of 24 million.
Yet, many North Koreans living near neighbouring northern China still smuggled in phones on Chinese networks to bypass state control and speak to foreign contacts or access outside information, according to human rights group Amnesty International.
(4) Amusement park amenities
At least six known amusement parks reported opening in North Korea between the 1970s and 2012.
North Korea acquired “merry-go-rounds, swings, target boards for shooting, and other playground amenities” in the second and third quarter of 2016 and in the second quarter of 2017, according to the customs data.
It was unclear whether these new imports would go to old parks or be placed at new ones, but North Korea’s parks are built primarily for tourists, and even its tumultuous relationship with the outside world has not deterred its ambitions of developing its tourism industry.
Chinese firms dodge sanctions to trade with North Korea, says security analyst
North Korea aimed to have the number of incoming visitors hit one million by the end of this year, although South Korean sources have estimated that 100,000 tourists visited the North in 2015, with 90 per cent being Chinese. Traditionally, only a few thousand Western tourists were understood to be visiting the closed kingdom annually, through registered travelling tour companies.
(5) Musical instruments
North Koreans’ love for music seemed to have remain undimmed regardless of the turning of political tides as imports of musical instruments from China have been on increase in the past nine months.
There are seven music-related categories on the long list of Chinese imports in North Korea: “piano and other keyboard instruments; string instruments such as harp, violin and guitar; wind instruments; percussion; electronic instruments such as electronic guitar and keyboard; music boxes, fairground organs and accordions; and small parts of music instruments”.
The category seeing the greatest number of imports among musical instruments was “music boxes, fairground organs and accordions”, with 68,670 products being imported from China to North Korea in 1.5 years. In contrast, just 300 wind instruments and 503 pianos were sent into the country in the same period.
Although there are no breakdowns to show which imported instrument is most popular, all teachers were required to play the accordion in the 1990s, according to journalist Barbara Demick’s seminal book on North Korean life, Nothing to Envy, published in 2009. The box-shaped instrument was known as the “people’s instrument” since it was portable enough to carry along when doing hard labour in the fields, where some would sing North Korean folk songs while others would play the instrument, according to the book.
The premier state instrumental ensemble, The Unhasu Orchestra, which primarily uses Western instruments, is the country’s most visible classical music organisation and has performed internationally. Kim Jong-un’s wife, Ri Sol-ju, was a singer for the orchestra.

Clayton Kershaw dominates in return; Dodgers end losing streak – Orange County Register

Starting a big-league game for the first time since July 23, Dodgers ace looked very much like the same Clayton Kershaw he was before walking off the mound with a lower back strain that day.
SAN DIEGO — Get together with old friends for the first time in awhile and everyone falls back into their familiar roles as if no time has passed.
It was just like that.
Starting a big-league game for the first time since July 23, Clayton Kershaw looked very much like the same Clayton Kershaw he was before walking off the mound with a lower back strain that day.

Dodgers Notes: Top prospect Alex Verdugo arrives for potential September audition His curveball had its usual bite, his slider the familiar hiss. And the San Diego Padres were as thoroughly overmatched as they usually are against Kershaw.
The Dodgers rested ace allowed just two harmless infield singles in six scoreless innings in his return, putting a stop to the Dodgers’ five-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Padres.
Kershaw has said he felt healthy enough to be pitching in the big leagues a few weeks ago and had to be convinced that a rehab start was a necessary step to returning. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged that the team had used the luxury of their runaway lead in the NL West to “slow-play” Kershaw’s return, erring wholly on the side of caution with a pitcher who spent 75 days on the DL with a more serious back injury last season.
The left-hander seemed intent on proving his point at the Padres’ expense.
Roberts said before the game that a loose limit of five innings and 75 pitches was the “baseline” for Kershaw’s first game back. But he cruised through six innings on a hyper-efficient 70 pitches. Only 17 were called balls and Kershaw didn’ t go to a three-ball count on anyone until the final batter he faced.
Manuel Margot beat out a chopper over the mound to start the first inning. Kershaw retired the next 12 batters before Yangervis Solarte reached on another ground ball that shortstop Chris Taylor stopped on the outfield grass but couldn’ t make a play on.
Those were the only baserunners in Kershaw’s six innings – and Solarte’s grounder to the outfield grass was as close as the Padres got to making a Dodgers outfielder field a ball Friday night. Kershaw struck out seven.
But the Dodgers’ offense wasn’ t having much luck with Padres starter Dinelson Lamet for most of the night either. He struck out 10 in six innings.
Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger led off the sixth with singles off Lamet. They were still standing at first and second two outs later. But Chase Utley came through with a two-out, RBI single to drive in Turner.
That gave the Dodgers their first lead in a game since last Friday.
Brandon Morrow, Tony Watson and Kenley Jansen made it stand up by retiring the final nine Padres batters in order, striking out six.
More to come on this story.
