Lee descendant resigns as pastor over racial justice comment

A descendant of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee says he stepped down as pastor of a North Carolina church after negative reactions to his comments supporting racial justice during an MTV awards show «made it clear that I was no longer welcome there.»
By JONATHAN DREW, Associated Press
RALEIGH, N. C. — A descendant of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee says he stepped down as pastor of a North Carolina church after negative reactions to his comments supporting racial justice during an MTV awards show «made it clear that I was no longer welcome there.»
The general’s distant nephew, the Rev. Robert W. Lee IV, issued a statement Monday saying he resigned from Bethany United Church of Christ near Winston-Salem after the congregation decided to put his tenure to a vote.
He said some church members were uncomfortable with his remarks praising the Black Lives Matter movement during the Aug. 27 MTV Video Music Awards. He was introducing the mother of Heather Heyer, who was killed during demonstrations over a Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Lee also used the televised remarks to lament that his ancestor has become a symbol of racism.
«We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate, » he said. «As a pastor, it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin.»
The MTV appearance brought unwanted attention to the small church about 100 miles west of Raleigh. The church has a Winston-Salem address, but serves the town of Midway, Lee said.
«A faction of church members were concerned about my speech and that I lifted up Black Lives Matter movement, the Women’ s March, and Heather Heyer as examples of racial justice work, » Lee said in the statement explaining his resignation.
In a phone interview Tuesday, Lee declined to elaborate on what was said by the church members who disagreed with him, but said it was clear he couldn’t remain as pastor.
«The uncomfortable media attention and differing views with me by some of the congregation — and I want to make it very clear that it was not all of the congregation — made it clear that I was no longer welcome there, » he said, adding that he’s also received positive messages.
He said he received a supportive call Tuesday from the Rev. John Dorhauer, the national president of the United Church of Christ.
Two local congregation leaders listed in state nonprofit filings didn’t respond to messages seeking comment Tuesday. The church’s phone rang unanswered.
Lee also issued an apology to church members for causing them pain with his remarks on MTV. But he said he continues to «strongly support» removal of monuments to his ancestor and other Confederates.
Lee, a recent graduate of the Duke Divinity School and the great-great-great-great nephew of the Confederate general, was appointed pastor of the church in April, according to its website.
While Lee spoke out against racism in a 2016 Washington Post opinion piece that linked him to his namesake, he said his MTV appearance has garnered a much stronger reaction. But most of all, he said, he doesn’t want the news about him to take attention away from larger conversations about racism in the U. S.
«I don’t want this to be about me, » he said.
Lee’s remarks on MTV came in the aftermath of a rally by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia, that turned violent as the demonstrators clashed with counterprotesters. Heyer died when a driver plowed into a crowd that had gathered to denounce the white supremacists.

Man fired for sending private messages at work is vindicated in court

0

A European court ruled a company violated the privacy of a man who was fired for using a messaging application to send personal messages on company time.
A European court today ruled in favor of a man who was fired for breaching company policy by using his work account on Yahoo Messenger to send messages to his fiancee and brother. Court documents disclosed that the company – which was not named in said documents – failed to provide proper notification to employees that they were being monitored.
The European Court of Human Rights decided that Romanian judges hadn’ t protected the plaintiff’s right to privacy when they ruled in favor of the company. It concluded that employees weren’ t given sufficient notice of the extent to which they were being monitored.
Bogdan Barbulescu, the man who was fired, reportedly admitted to signing company documents stating he wouldn’ t use work accounts for personal communication – and perhaps there’s an argument to be made that he deserved to be let go for disregarding the policy.
This case, however, was about privacy. James Froud, a legal expert, told Reuters: Reuters
We may see a shift in emphasis, with courts requiring employers to clearly demonstrate the steps they have taken to address the issue of privacy in workplace, both in terms of granting employees ‘space’ to have a private life whilst clearly delineating the boundaries.
Cases similar to this one have, typically, been resolved in favor of employers. Courts generally rule employees misuse of company resources justifies termination, but often fail to completely address privacy concerns for employees — especially in the US. the US
While the argument in the Barbulescu case may center around an employee who violated company policy and, possibly, deserved discipline, the privacy of the other employees at the company was obviously being violated.
Barbulescu contends that his employer read his private messages and made copies of them to support its argument for terminating his employment. Furthermore he didn’ t know his messages were being monitored, according to court papers.
Policy related to privacy — especially in an age where technology can quickly take something private and make it world news — needs to be very specific and should force companies to be very clear about what they monitor.

Trump Needs a Real North Korea Strategy, Fast

Trump Needs a Real North Korea Strategy, Fast
In the wake of North Korea’s most dangerous nuclear test yet — one reportedly yielding enough destructive power to eliminate a city — it is worth setting aside all the blustering presidential tweets for a moment and considering what an actual strategy on North Korea would look like.
The first step would be to stop searching for silver bullets. That means forgetting about grand diplomatic bargains with Pyongyang or Beijing. Since 1992, North Korea has established a 100 percent record for cheating on freezes, frameworks, and agreements of all kinds. We are past the tired cliché that Pyongyang must “make a choice” between nuclear weapons and acceptance in the international community. They have clearly made their choice. Talking to Pyongyang might yield tactical insights, but any negotiator will quickly find that the North Koreans will no longer even pretend they are interested in denuclearization. It is dangerous and counterproductive for us to pretend otherwise.
Nor is a preemptive military strike going to eliminate this threat. The administration is prudent to plan for all contingencies, including the option of hitting nuclear-tipped missiles before they are launched. This is also the right time to demonstrate to North Korea that we will not be intimidated or blackmailed by Pyongyang’s belligerency. But the administration will find no surgical strike option that would eliminate the North’s weapons or avoid the risk of triggering a war that could cause a million-plus casualties across Northeast Asia. The White House appears to be encouraging stories that pre-emptive war is an option — and there may be leverage in that — but no serious strategy would be based on this course of action.
The third easy out — to simply contain the North Korean nuclear threat and live with it (proposed recently by President Barack Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice) is also unacceptable. We can be quite certain that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will use his growing ICBM capability to blackmail and threaten the United States, South Korea, and Japan. More confident that his nuclear weapons will protect him against retaliation, he will conduct increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks and possibly military strikes against isolated South Korean targets (the way he sank a South Korean corvette in 2010) . He may also threaten to transfer nuclear-related technology to hostile third states, the way his regime helped Syria begin building a nuclear reactor at el Kibar until the Israeli Air Force destroyed it in 2007.
If we make short-term diplomatic arrangements or give Kim economic aid to buy him off, he will drive an even bigger pick-up truck through the plate-glass window the next time, demanding ever larger concessions such as the withdrawal of U. S. security guarantees from our allies. China, which would like to see U. S. alliances in Asia atrophy over time, will be an enabler of this North Korean strategy if we are passive ourselves.
In short, we cannot make a deal on the North’s nuclear weapons, take them out, or ignore them. Instead, a serious strategy would muster U. S. power and alliances for a difficult longer-term campaign to contain, deter, and roll back this threat.
Strengthening our alliances will be critical. President Trump has established an easy rapport with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, but has gone out of his way to antagonize and humiliate our South Korean allies. The administration’s internal decision to scuttle the Korea-U. S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) last week was an act of sophomoric economic nationalism and terribly timed in terms of national security — as H. R. McMaster, James Mattis, and Rex Tillerson all reportedly warned the president. The Trump tweet attacks on South Korea’s president are also completely self-destructive — sowing the seeds of dissent with a new Korean president who is clearly pro-American and resolute on defense, despite his naïve hope for dialogue with the North. (One cannot entirely blame South Koreans for hoping their might be a diplomatic way out of this nightmare.) Those of us who worked the Six Party Talks know well that when Beijing thinks Seoul is in play, China pulls back; but when North Korean actions are prompting collective security cooperation across the U. S.-Japan and U. S.-Korea alliances, China moves to pressure North Korea. If we cannot get both our major alliances right in Northeast Asia, we have little hope of managing this new threat.
A serious strategy would also strengthen the military and intelligence tools we have with our allies to check North Korean military ambitions going forward. Containment and deterrence can work, but only if we take far more active countermeasures than we have been to date. We will need a more aggressive strategy for defeating Pyongyang’s cyber activities and to interdict North Korean movements of money and technology related to its nuclear and missile development. New sanctions put in place by Congress are only the beginning of that process and Beijing will need to understand that its firms will face further sanctions if China does not actively help with the interdiction and roll-back of North Korean technology acquisition and money-laundering. Integrating missile defenses among our allies in Northeast Asia will also be essential (South Korea was hesitant to do so because of Chinese resistance, but will be more forthcoming, as long as Trump’s strategy is not to alienate the South Korean president) . The administration should also consider new military deployments, including cruise missiles in Japan or South Korea, that would demonstrate that we are working with our allies to expanding our options for deterrence and defense.
All of these steps will by necessity lead to more friction with Beijing, but that friction will simply have to be managed without trepidation. The friction will also have to be targeted. Beijing remains wary of regime collapse in the North and the United States is unlikely to muster sufficient leverage to change that bottom line. Instead, the administration will have to press for Chinese action in specific areas that hurt the regime leadership and constrain the North’s weapons programs. There is no shortage of Chinese firms now investing in North Korea or exporting dual-use materials — well beyond the initial sanctions list announced by the administration last month. Expecting China to act based on U. N. Security Council consensus alone will no longer be sufficient, particularly with Russia playing spoiler right now.
In sum, a serious North Korea strategy will require persistence, resolve and above all —discipline. We can no longer afford conflicting diplomatic messages, gratuitous fights with allies, unfilled positions at the State and Defense Departments, or commentary from the commander-in-chief as if this were not happening on his watch.

Vuelta: Froome nach Zeitfahren weiter auf Kurs

0

Here's what's new in Windows Server Insider build 16278

Earlier today, Microsoft released Windows Server Insider Preview build 16278. Now, the company has finally announced it, along with a changelog that includes a bunch of known issues.
Earlier today, Microsoft released Windows Server build 16278 to Insiders; however, it hadn’t actually announced it, so there were no release notes. Now, the firm has finally published a changelog.
There are no new front-facing features in the build, which is no surprise, given that version 1709 of the OS is slated to be launched at Microsoft’s Ignite 2017 conference, which kicks off on September 25. In fact, the company confirmed that this will be the final Server preview build before it’s released later this month. Of course, that doesn’t mean that this is the RTM, as the final build number will eventually line up with Windows 10 client, and the Fast ring already has a build with a greater number available.
There were, however, some general scenario highlights that were listed:
There are also some known issues to be aware of:
As always, you can download Windows Server build 16278 from the official download page. The Remote Server Administration Tools are still there in x64 and x86 flavors, but those haven’t been updated, although there is a new build of Server Symbols MSI.
You can use the following keys on an unlimited amount of machines:
Those keys will expire on December 4.

WhatsApp to launch dedicated chat apps for businesses

0

The app for SMBs will be free, while another fee-based app is in the works for larger enterprises.
Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is testing new features for businesses that would allow them to chat with customers more officially.
The messaging service revealed last week that it has started placing green badges next to a business contact, indicating that the business is legit and verified by WhatsApp. Eventually, WhatsApp plans to use the verification component as part of a dedicated customer service app for businesses called WhatsApp Business.
«We’re building and testing new tools via a free WhatsApp Business app for small companies and an enterprise solution for bigger companies operating at a large scale with a global base of customers, like airlines, e-commerce sites, and banks, » WhatsApp wrote in a blog post Tuesday.
The company didn’t provide further details about additional features and availability of the new apps, but it did reveal to the Wall Street Journal that a fee-based structure is in the works for larger enterprises.
«We do intend on charging businesses in the future, » WhatsApp COO Matt Idema told the WSJ. «We don’t have the details of monetization figured out.»
Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014 for roughly $16 billion, and since then, usage of the messaging platform has skyrocketed to more than 1 billion daily active users. But while Facebook has sought to grow its newer revenue streams from platforms like Messenger, and Instagram, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said it’s «still early on the monetization side» for WhatsApp.

Lin-Manuel Miranda rocks in new ‘The Magic School Bus' theme song

This is one school trip you don’ t want to miss.
Netflix released a first look at “ The Magic School Bus Rides Again ” on Tuesday, a reboot of the popular 90s kids edutainment program, “The Magic School Bus” starring Lily Tomlin as the fanciful and far out Ms. Frizzle.
The new show, which is set to premiere Sept. 29, stars “SNL” comedienne Kate McKinnon as the younger sister to Tomlin’s Frizzle.
In the trailer, Tomlin passes the keys to the magical yellow school bus to her sister, who takes the kids on their first magical adventure through the minimally updated theme song sung by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda takes over for Little Richard, who sang the original show’s theme song.
Kate McKinnon joins ‘Magic School Bus’ reboot as Ms. Frizzle
“The Magic School Bus” has the power to travel anywhere the students need a science lesson: underwater, outerspace, inside the kids’ bloodstreams, and, because it’s a new millennium, the Internet.
The class looks like the same diverse cast of characters from the 90s series, just with updated style, including Carlos, Keesha, Liz the chameleon and Arnold, who always wishes he’ d stayed home.
The original series, which debuted in 1994, aired 54 episodes on PBS Kids before continuing to educate and entertain kids in syndication. It was originally a book series by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen and was turned into a television show by Scholastic Entertainment to teach children about science.
Lily Tomlin won a Daytime Emmy for her role as Ms Frizzle in 1995. Tomlin also stars in Netflix’s “Gracie and Frankie.”
