Democrats Boycott Vote On Trump’s EPA Nominee

0

NewsHubDemocratic senators boycotted a vote to confirm President Donald Trump’s pick to hear the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Wednesday, saying Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt had not answered all of the more than written 1,000 questions submitted to him by lawmaker.
“It is a disappointing turn of events,” Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, said when no committee Democrats showed up to the scheduled vote.
“It’s not like they’re busy, literally they’re circling the hallway,” Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan, a Republican, said Wednesday, comparing the Democrat boycott to a “temper tantrum.”
“Pruitt has gone above & beyond to be responsive to this committee. He answered 206 Qs during his hearing & 1,078 Qs for the record” @EPWMaj
— Jim Inhofe (@jiminhofe) February 1, 2017
Democrats gathered in the hallway outside the committee hearing room to broadcast a live statement against Pruitt’s confirmation. Ranking member Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware criticized Pruitt for not answering all the questions submitted to him after his January hearing.
Carper asked Barrasso to postpone the vote until Pruitt answered all 1,078 questions.

— Senator Tom Carper (@SenatorCarper) January 31, 2017
Republicans criticized Democrats’ actions as “childish,” but Pruitt opponents pointed out that Republicans boycotted a 2013 committee vote for President Obama’s second pick to head EPA, Gina McCarthy.
Democrats called the 2013 Republican boycott “embarrassing,” but Republicans boycotted the vote because they didn’t believe McCarthy had fully answered all 1,000 of their questions, especially ones regarding agency transparency.
Democrats came out against Pruitt even as he was nominated, largely echoing environmentalist talking points that the Oklahoma prosecutor was a “climate denier” and a shill of “Big Oil.”
Pruitt’s sued EPA dozens of times to overturn agency regulations, which has opponents painting him as anti-clean air and water. Pruitt supporters, however, say the attorney general sued to protect state’s rights from federal overreach.
Democrats also boycotted votes for at least two other Trump cabinet picks Wednesday — votes to support Steven Mnuchin as treasury secretary and Georgia Rep. Tom Price as Health and Human Services Secretary.
But both those nominees were advanced by a rule change by Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah.
Those nominees will head to the Senate floor for a vote, though it’s unclear when that will happen.

Cats are just as clever as dogs, says study

0

NewsHubFor whatever reason, people assume dogs are more intelligent creatures than cats. This notion has been called into question by scientists in Japan, who have said that cats are as smart as dogs at certain memory tests. Cat lovers, of course, have always known this. Researchers at Kyoto University conducted tests on how well 49 cats could recall or relate to an event from the past – known as an episodic memory. The Japanese team got the felines to eat from one of two bowls. Fifteen minutes later, the cats were tested on their ability to remember which bowl they had eaten from and which remained untouched. The team found the cats could recall what they ate and where, suggesting they had episodic memory.
The scientists also said that cats were as good as dogs on a whole variety of mental tests, including responding to the gestures, facial expressions and emotions of humans. Researcher Saho Takagi told reporters that she believed cats think about past events similar to the way humans do. She said: “ An interesting speculation is that they may enjoy actively recalling memories of their experience, like humans. “ She added: „Episodic memory is viewed as being related to an introspective function of the mind. Our study may imply a type of consciousness in cats. “ Ms Takagi said the research is good news for pet owners, saying: „Understanding cats more deeply helps to establish better cat-human relationships. „

German arrests: Key Tunisian among 16 held in raids on jihadist suspects

0

NewsHubA 36-year-old Tunisian man suspected of recruiting for jihadist group Islamic State has been detained in multiple raids in Germany.
He was one of 16 people arrested across the central state of Hesse, as 1,100 police searched flats, businesses and mosques.
The man is also wanted by Tunisian authorities over a jihadist attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis.
Twenty-one tourists and a Tunisian were killed in March 2015.
Many of the victims were British, Japanese, French, Italian or Colombian.
Authorities in Frankfurt said Wednesday’s operation was the result of a four-month investigation. They had evidence Islamists were preparing an attack, but described the planning as in its early stages.
Those arrested are aged between 16 and 46 and are suspected of helping a foreign terrorist group and of planning serious violence.
Three men were held in separate raids in Berlin late on Tuesday which included a mosque that Tunisian jihadist Anis Amri visited shortly before driving a heavy goods lorry into a crowded Christmas market in December, killing 12 people.
One of the three detained was said to be in charge of the Fussilet mosque, which has been described as a base for radical Muslims in Berlin.
Amri had spent four years in jail in Italy before travelling to Germany but repeated attempts to send him back to Tunisia had failed because officials there said he had no documents.
Police said the Tunisian man picked up on Wednesday was detained at his home in Frankfurt. He had spent 10 years in Germany until 2013 and had returned as an asylum seeker in August 2015.
Since his return he is suspected of setting up an IS support network.
Tunisian authorities have also linked him to a deadly March 2016 attack on the town of Ben Guerdane, close to the Libyan border.
He was in detention in Frankfurt facing extradition for several weeks but was released last November because Tunisian authorities had failed to submit documents in time.

‘North Shore’ actor Gregory Harrison still devoted to surfing 30 years after film

Gregory Harrison already was an accomplished actor when he was cast for the film “North Shore.”
He was a celebrity often surrounded by Hollywood’s elite. But it was the surf stars he was acting alongside on this movie, famous surfers such as Laird Hamilton and Gerry Lopez, who made him tongue-tied.
“They were my childhood heroes,” said Harrison, who played the fatherly Zen character of Chandler in the cult classic. “I don’t ever get that in professional acting; I don’t feel that way any more. But I’m still a kid when it comes to surfers.”
The 1987 film turns 30 this year, and Harrison will speak today at the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach as part of the new “On the Couch” series, in which Peter “PT” Townend, professional surfing’s first world champion, hosts a dialogue with well-known surfers.
Harrison grew up on Catalina Island, where his grandfather migrated to start a glass-bottom boat company. His father ran the boats, and he was in line to take over the family business.
In 1959, however, a tourist came to the island with board in arm to ride waves on the south side of the small island, where only about 2,000 people lived.
“Someone had seen him surfing, and word spread in a little town like that in minutes,” Harrison said.
Some of the older men on the island got longboards, He was 9 when his dad took him and a few buddies to surf.
“I remember the first wave I bellied in on a board,” said Harrison, now 66. “I was hooked.”
At the same time, he was intrigued when film crews came to the island looking for a tropical setting. He quietly observed when the movie “The Glass Bottom Boat” with Doris Day was filmed on his family boat in 1965. “I was 15 years old and I realized what they were doing wasn’t a magical process, it was something I could do.” Harrison moved to the mainland and made a name for himself in television shows such as “Logan’s Run” and “Centennial,” then the series “Trapper John, M. D.” Meanwhile, his passion remained strong for surfing, and he traveled to places such as Bali, Tahiti and Australia. He eventually bought a home just above the famous Rincon surf spot near Santa Barbara.
He was 37 when a friend brought him the script for the role of Chandler in “North Shore.”
“It seemed like a dream job. I was going to do what I loved to do already,” he said. “I had been surfing the North Shore for 20 years when I got cast in the movie. I was obviously right for it. It wasn’t a challenging role… it was an aspect of myself that already exists.”
In the film, a young, ambitious surfer named Rick Kane, winner of a wave pool contest in Arizona, heads to Hawaii to take on big waves on the North Shore. Along the way, he meets pro surfers including Mark Occhilupo and comes up against his nemesis, played by Laird Hamilton, in a surf contest.
Chandler is Kane’s mentor, a soul surfer teaching him there’s more to surfing than just competition.
“I thought it captured the essence of what’s magical about the North Shore,” Harrison said. “The essence of the brotherhood of surfing and the majesty of it, the soulfulness of it is really captured in the film, which I take pride in. That it isn’t just a competitive sport, it’s a lifestyle and religion and it’s a number of things to different people. As silly as the plot is, the movie captures that and that’s why it continues to reverberate and have emotional weight.”
When the movie came out, it flopped in the theaters.
“It didn’t appeal to the mid-America audience,” he said. “I wasn’t disappointed in the film. I was disappointed it didn’t resonate with a wider audience.”
But then, even to Harrison’s surprise, it became a cult classic among surfers.
“When we shot it, we had no idea it would become an iconic film, that groms would memorize every word,” he said. “What we didn’t realize, the people who appreciated it loved it and revered it and became that cult audience, who loved it and still love it.”
In real life, Harrison is similar to the role he played in “North Shore.”
“To me, surfing has never been a competitive act — it’s a soulful, singular, focused, appreciative, natural moment,” he said. “It isn’t just about riding the wave, although that is a highlight. It’s about the ceremony — the ceremony of getting up in the morning; the anticipation of getting in our car and trying to go where it’s going to be best; changing into your wetsuit and waxing your board. It’s a ceremony.” He said there’s no plans for a “North Shore” remake. About a decade ago, he and the film’s producers and directors tried to get rights to the script, but Universal didn’t want to release them, he said.
“They didn’t want to do it themselves, because it wasn’t successful by their standards, but they didn’t want someone else to make it successful. It’s pretty much standard Hollywood,” he said.
Harrison is still acting, with recent parts in the series “Rizzoli & Isles,” and he and his daughter Lily Anne are in a film called “Fair Haven” coming out in March.
And he still surfs as much as possible.
“It centers me and makes me more balanced in life,” he said. “More tolerant, less demanding, more satisfied, more mellow.”

Pentagon chief makes first trip to Asia in uncertain atmosphere

0

NewsHubOther than a tweet, President Donald Trump hasn’t said how he’ll stop North Korea from threatening America with a nuclear weapon. And as his Pentagon chief visits key allies in Asia, neither Trump nor his Republican allies in Congress seem settled on any plan. The fight against the Islamic State group is the new administration’s top national security priority, but Defense Secretary Jim Mattis chose South Korea and Japan for his first official overseas trip. Departing Wednesday, Mattis will look to reassure the nations on the front line against North Korea. Americans are seeking reassurance, too. Concern has surged on both sides of the Pacific about the North’s weapons programmes, after leader Kim Jong Un warned in his annual New Year’s address that the country is in the final stages of readiness to test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially threaten the continental United States. In Washington this week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held its first policy hearing since Trump took office to discuss North Korea. There were more questions than answers. Last month, Trump fueled speculation of possible US military action to pre-empt North Korea’s weapons development. He tweeted: “Does that mean we have drawn a red line?” Sen. Ben Cardin, Democrat-Maryland, asked at Tuesday’s Senate hearing. Those questions and more will be posed to Mattis when he meets top officials in Seoul on Thursday and Tokyo later in the week, two jittery allies that host nearly 80,000 US troops. During the campaign, Trump complained that defence treaties disadvantaged the US and that he would not rule out abandoning signatories if they refuse to pay more for their defence. He also suggested that South Korea and Japan, which are already within the range of North Korean missiles, might acquire their own nuclear weapons rather than rely on US deterrence. “It was a smart decision” to visit these allies early, former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in an interview. He believes officials in Tokyo and Seoul are wondering: “Can we rely on the US? What is the future here?” In phone conversations last weekend with the leaders of South Korea and Japan, Trump offered his own reassurance, saying the US defence commitment to both nations was “ironclad.” The commitment didn’t answer how his administration would tackle the North Korean threat. In Congress, bipartisan legislation passed last year empowered the US government to apply Iran-style economic restrictions on North Korea, which includes punishing other countries that deal with Pyongyang in violation of UN-approved sanctions. The obvious target is China, the North’s top economic partner. But going after Beijing entails its own dangers. The Chinese can retaliate against the United States, raising the prospect of a mutually debilitating trade war, or could end up less motivated to cooperate with Washington on containing North Korea. At this week’s hearing, Republican committee chairman Senator Bob Corker questioned whether anything short of military action or regime change would force Kim to give up nuclear weapons. The sanctions legislation, he said, is “piddling compared to the challenge,” and he called for new ideas about a US strategy. Trump has consistently emphasised the need for China to exert more pressure on its unpredictable neighbour. But Trump has also said he would be open to sitting down for a hamburger with Kim, who has met no other foreign leader since assuming power five years ago. No one seems comfortable with the previous administration’s “strategic patience,” though ready alternatives appear few. The inherited approach involved America tightening sanctions while refusing to jump into aid-for-disarmament negotiations. In the meantime, Pyongyang has marched toward greater prowess. Last year alone, the North staged two underground atomic explosions and two dozen ballistic missile tests, including its first from a submarine. Estimates of North Korea’s capabilities vary, but some US experts believe it could be able to strike the US mainland with a nuclear weapon by the end of the decade. By then, the North could also have enough reprocessed plutonium and enriched uranium for 100 bombs — not far short of India and Pakistan’s likely arsenals. Cardin, the Foreign Relations Committee’s top Democrat, said he understood the US may need to consider military options against North Korea. But he warned against setting such a policy rashly, drawing a comparison with Trump’s executive order on immigration and refugees that has drawn international condemnation.

– Doniesienia w ostatnich dniach o słabych punktach w naszych systemach skłaniają do pytań o możliwość manipulacji wynikami – dodał Plasterk.

Gra w kości Einsteina i kot Schrödingera [recenzja]

0

NewsHubPrószyński i Spółka Bartłomiej Krawczyk 01 lutego 2017 N ajnowszą książkę fizyka i niestrudzonego popularyzatora nauki Paula Halperna „Gra w kości Einsteina i kot Schrödingera“ można przyrównać do znacznie bardziej obszernej biografii wybitnego fizyka Paula Diraca napisanej przez Grahama Farmelo.
O zażartej rywalizacji Einsteina i Schrödingera w poszukiwaniu Wielkiej Teorii Unifikacji i niezgodzie obu naukowców na indeterminizm mechaniki kwantowej opowiada ta książka.
I jednocześnie prawdziwym tytanem intelektu dorównującym Einsteinowi.

WOŚP zgłoszony do Pokojowej Nagrody Nobla

0

NewsHubOstateczny termin przyjmowania kandydatur do nagrody upłynął o północy 31 stycznia. – powiedział PAP w środę rektor warszawskiej Wyższej Szkoły Promocji prof. Adam Grzegorczyk, który wysłał wniosek do Komitetu. W przypadku Pokojowej Nagrody Nobla prawo do nominacji mają członkowie parlamentów narodowych, członkowie rządu (ministrowie), a także głowy państw aktualnie sprawujące władzę.
