Oscar-winning ‘Exorcist’ author dies at 89

0

NewsHubLOS ANGELES—William Peter Blatty, the author of the novel “The Exorcist” and writer of its Oscar-winning big-screen adaptation, has died aged 89, the director of the iconic horror movie announced Friday.
Blatty wrote several books but his signature achievement was the 1971 novel that told the story of a 12-year-old girl whose vile behavior leads a young priest to conclude that she is possessed by a demon.
The novel was panned by critics but went on to sell 13 million copies, topping The New York Times bestseller list for 17 weeks, and is retrospectively considered to be one of the greatest horror novels of all time.
Blatty won an Oscar for his screenplay of his own book for the 1973 film and later wrote and directed a sequel, 1990’s “The Exorcist III.”
The original film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Linda Blair, was a box-office hit and cult sensation that sparked a worldwide debate about the occult within the Catholic Church and inspired a generation of horror filmmakers.
Blatty, raised a devout Roman Catholic, died at a hospital near his home in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, but it was announced on social media by Friedkin on Friday.
“William Peter Blatty, dear friend and brother who created ‘The Exorcist’ passed away yesterday,” he said, prompting a torrent of tributes from the horror-writing community.
“RIP William Peter Blatty, who wrote the great horror novel of our time. So long, Old Bill,” tweeted Stephen King, whose books have sold more than 350 million copies.
The son of Lebanese immigrants, Blatty was born into poverty in New York and graduated from Georgetown University before earning his living as a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.
During a diverse career he was also a psychological warfare specialist in the US Air Force and a public relations director at Loyola University of Los Angeles and the University of Southern California.
Although best-known for “The Exorcist,” Blatty specialized in comedy, penning “Promise Her Anything” (1965), which starred Warren Beatty, “What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?” (1966) and “The Great Bank Robbery” (1969).
He collaborated several times with director Blake Edwards, co-writing the Pink Panther sequel “A Shot in the Dark” (1964) and “Darling Lili” (1970) which starred screen legends Rock Hudson and Julie Andrews.
“You might only know Blatty from ‘The Exorcist,’ but his array of talents could practically make your head spin. He will be missed,” said film blog Screen Crush.
“Rest in peace William Peter Blatty, writer of both the peerless horror ‘The Exorcist’ AND the funniest Clouseau film, ‘A Shot In The Dark,’” added Edgar Wright, the British director of hit zom-com “Shaun of the Dead.”
He is survived by his wife, Julie Alicia Witbrodt, who told The Washington Post her husband was suffering from multiple myeloma, a form of cancer.

Hidden Figures: Inspiring STEM heroes for girls

0

NewsHubThere is a much-loved aphorism used by parents of all generations that says “you are what you eat.” I would also suggest that a similar phenomenon holds true for career choices: “You become what you see.”
By that I mean that most of us go on to careers or lifelong passions that are rooted in who inspired us as impressionable teenagers. Perhaps it was an amazing teacher, an impressive family member or a particularly appealing film or television character.
Unfortunately, cinema often does society a disservice in that very few strong, independent women present compelling career choices for our young girls. That few dwindles to almost none when you look at female leads that show a career path for girls interested in science and math.
That is why I was particularly excited for the release of Hidden Figures, a film that depicts the true story of the African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson and her two colleagues, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. These women, and many others, worked in the segregated West Area Computers, a division of Langley Research Center, as part of NASA during the Space Race against Russia. Their work directly contributed to John Glenn becoming the first American astronaut to make three complete orbits of the Earth.
If you have seen or heard me speak, you know that I believe the way the media portrays careers in the tech industry and the way society views smart women are two of the primary reasons so few girls pursue careers in STEM-related fields. I have even been known to harp on the Big Bang Theory character Sheldon Cooper as an example of the media’s steadfast resolution to portray the STEM professions — and technology in particular — as populated by anti-social, hoodie wearing (or poorly dressed) white males.
So I was also a bit nervous when our volunteers and girls were invited to a special screening of Hidden Figures. I was eager for a feature-length film that profiled women as important historical figures because of their intelligence and STEM-related contributions. But I also noted that Jim Parsons, the actor who portrays the aforementioned Sheldon Cooper, was in the film. Was this destined to be another Hollywood version that undermined its potentially strong message by pandering to society’s common misperceptions?
Well, I am pleased to report the movie is all I could have hoped for. At its most basic level, it is a rewarding, compelling film. It’s rare to be part of a movie audience that erupts in spontaneous applause during the middle of the film!
And on a much deeper level, it is even more fulfilling. It depicts these women as the brilliant and driven mothers, friends and colleagues that they were. Importantly, it does not shy away from how they were initially dismissed and treated because of their race and gender. But it also shows us how the greater goal of putting a human into space trumped any preconceived notions of these women’s abilities.
Our group was made up of our participating girls, their mothers and our volunteers, and all were enthusiastic about the movie. They were so excited to learn the stories of these women through a film that showcased their abilities as engineers and mathematicians, and that highlighted their role in overcoming this enormous challenge. Here is just a sample of some of their more insightful observations after viewing the film:
“This is my story. You need to see it to believe it and to be it.”
“This movie will encourage my daughter to work harder because she wants to be an engineer.”
As an ardent moviegoer, I have seen an uptick in the number of strong female leads over the last several years. However, the type of women portrayed in Hidden Figures remains rare. My own thoughts and the reactions from our girls aside, does showing more female science, technology and math leaders on film and TV help girls see themselves in that light?
In 2006, actress Geena Davis established the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to answer precisely this question. The institute sponsors research and highlights the inequity of female characters in TV and the movies. A 2012 study analyzed movies, prime-time television and a selection of children’s shows to examine the portrayal of gender roles and occupations. The research found that STEM careers are portrayed sparingly across these mediums, and are often heavily weighted toward the physical sciences versus other related fields. For those STEM careers that do make it to the screen, men overwhelmingly depict them — to a much higher percentage than the real-world male/female STEM split. You can find the entire study here.
Back to my opening and our mantra: “You become what you see.” Hidden Figures was an important and inspiring film, but it cannot stand alone. It is critical that we find ways to bring more projects like this to fruition, because it is one of the most powerful ways to inspire young girls to pursue STEM-related careers. We must reverse the trends found in the Geena Davis Institute study if we want to chart a new course for our girls.
I can only hope that Hidden Figures is the proverbial “shot over the bow” that those of us in the tech industry have been waiting for. Let’s begin by tracking the impact of this film on our girls. A study done about the connection between an increase in female archery interest after the debut of Hunger Games and Brave — two movies that depicted heroines who were archers — found that the number of girls participating in national archery competitions doubled from the previous year. I am confident that a study conducted in 2018 will find the number of African-American girls — and perhaps girls in general — enrolling in programming courses will have increased dramatically by then as a result of Hidden Figures.
But how do we keep that ball rolling? Share your ideas for how we can increase the roles for strong female STEM leads in entertainment. John Glenn trusted Katherine Johnson to be part of his team; he didn’t care that she was an African-American woman — only that she was the best at her job. This is the message we must communicate more widely. In this way, we can normalize society’s view of women as computer scientists to be the rule, rather than the exception. As Ms. Johnson’s boss, Al Harris, says: “We all get there together — or not at all.”

Skype now lets you disable notification sounds on web-based services

0

NewsHubMicrosoft has been on a mission to make Skype ubiquitous. This has led to the communications platform being integrated into various other services in the company’s portfolio including web-based services such as Outlook.com and OneDrive.com. However, it had one quite prominent feature missing from those services, the ability to disable notifications. Regular users of the service have taken issue with the lack of such a feature, with some calling it embarrassing.
Thankfully, this situation has now changed after Microsoft released an update to its online services. Now, when you open Outlook.com, for instance, the Skype client includes the option to disable notification sounds.
To disable notification sounds:
Furthermore, the change should be reflected in other services so if you disable notification sounds in Outlook.com, you should see your settings reflected in OneDrive.com as well.

SmartThings is killing off its Windows Phone app

0

NewsHubWindows Phone has had an app problem for quite a while now and given that the platform has less than one percent market share , developers might not be too keen on developing for the platform or even updating existing apps. Samsung’s SmartThings is the latest in the growing list of apps leaving the struggling platform.
SmartThings announced in a blog post that effective from 1st April, Windows Phone users will no longer be able to download their app, which will make SmartThings 1.7.0 the final version for the platform. The Palo Alto-based company explains that it is “no longer able to provide the desired level of updates and support for this platform”.
The app, however, will continue to work for existing users provided that their devices are running Windows 10 Mobile with the Anniversary Update installed. The company will continue to provide technical support to users through June 2017 after which the app will be withdrawn from the Windows Store.
If on the outside chance you still need to download the SmartThings app for Windows Phone before it is retired you can download it here .

Bluetooth improvements are coming in the Windows 10 Creators Update

0

NewsHubWhile Bluetooth wireless technology has been around for many years, not all devices have been equal in terms of capabilities. Users of Microsoft’s mobile operating systems will perhaps be amongst the first to attest to that fact given the lack of support for notifications over Bluetooth to wearable devices.
In an attempt to improve this situation, Microsoft has released several new Bluetooth features in this month’s Windows 10 Insider Preview for PCs and phones, specifically:
GATT (Generic ATTribute) Server is perhaps the most interesting of the new features. As has been the case for a long time, Windows devices have only had the capability to act as a GATT Client which is able to retrieve information from a GATT Server, such as a fitness tracker or heart rate monitor.
Unfortunately, wearables such a Pebble and Fitbit products have long been unable to act in the opposite manner with Windows devices, effectively thwarting notifications functionality. However, with the Windows 10 Creators Update, Windows itself will be able to act as a GATT Server, paving the way for wearables to receive notifications from Windows 10 Mobile devices.
Of course, device manufacturers will need to update their Windows apps to take advantage of the new functionality before users can reap the benefits. However, in its announcement , Microsoft noted that it was „working directly with Fitbit, Garmin and other device manufacturers“, which may provide some hope that users will hopefully not have too long to wait after the release of the Creators Update.

Nintendo's "ARMS" has players engaging in intense boxing matches, coming in spring 2017

0

NewsHubAt its Switch presentation yesterday , Nintendo announced a number of games for its upcoming hybrid console. These included Super Mario Odyssey , Sonic Mania , Fire Emblem Warriors , The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , and 1-2 Switch.
The company also unveiled another boxing game called ARMS .
ARMS appears to be inspired from the boxing mode in Wii Sports – that was launched back in 2006. It has a similar premise, that is, pitting players against each other or against the computer in an intense boxing match. Players can utilize a number of moves including jumping, punching, charged punches, sidestepping, and dodging, among others.
All this can be done using the detached Joy-Con controllers that are held in a vertical thumbs-up position, so that the player can easily press various combinations of buttons to perform different combat moves. ARMS makes use of motion controls for in-game movement, that is required to dodge and move characters.
Additionally, the characters in the game are colorful in appearance, very similar to the ones in Blizzard’s Overwatch. These characters can be customized to the extent that players can wield their weapons of choice on each of their (virtual) hands. ARMS has both single player and multi-player game modes, however, the trailer does caution that you’ll require additional accessories for the latter, which can be purchased separately. You can watch the trailer for the game below:
Although ARMS doesn’t have a firm release date, it is slated for a spring 2017 release on the Nintendo Switch.

Michael Lynton Out at Sony Pictures Entertainment

0

NewsHubSony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton announced Friday that he is stepping down from the entertainment conglomerate to focus his attention on his chairmanship of Snapchat, the social media company in which he has a major investment.
Lynton is leaving his post atop the conglomerate’s motion picture and music units but will remain on as Co-CEO for six months to help lead a search for his replacement. The announcement of the departure said Sony Corporation CEO Kazuo Hirai will focus with Lynton on the search for a new leader, with the Japanese businessman taking on a much higher profile in the operation, including the opening of a second office for him on the Culver City lot.
Among those rumored to be in line for Lynton’s post: DreamWorks Animation founder and former CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, Tribune Media president and CEO Peter Liguori and Jim Gianopulos, recently ousted as chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment. Two sources close to Gianopulos said, however, that there had been no contact between him and Sony.
„It has been an extraordinary 13 years and an honor to work at Sony with some of the most talented and creative people in the entertainment space,“ Lynton said in a statement. Explaining his move to the tech upstart he added: „I have been involved with Evan and Snapchat since its early days, and given its growth since then, decided the time was right to transition and focus on my role as Chairman of the Board of Snap Inc. “
The Harvard-educated Lynton was a respected leader in Hollywood, but his regime suffered multiple blows, particularly the 2014 hack of the studio’s computers that led to a series of embarrassing revelations about internal operations. Motion picture co-chair Amy Pascal lost her job following the scandal and workers from the top to bottom of the organization were unsettled by revelations in the emails.
More recently, Sony’s Motion Picture Group has struggled to find box office winners, with a string of under-perfoming films, including „Ghostbusters,“ „Inferno,“ and, most recently, „Passengers,“ the sci-fi romance, starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.
The studio’s Motion Picture Group has suffered more turmoil under the leadership of its chairman, Tom Rothman. More than a dozen executives complained about Rothman to either Lynton or the company’s Human Relations department. They said Rothman was a micro-manager and a caustic presence.
The studio’s top financial official, Andrew Gumpert, left Sony and soon took a job at Paramount Pictures. And other executives were said to be unhappy and planning to move, when other positions became available.
Rothman also has his supporters at Sony. They say that he has cracked down on profligate spending and insisted on top performance and quality control — creating high expectations that were much needed. After the complaints arose last year, the motion picture chairman got a vote of confidence from Lynton and from Hirai.
A statement from Hirai praised Lynton’s performance, saying he had made „broad structural and management changes,“ while acknowledging that considerable work needs to be done to get the film business back on its feet. He said the film business needs „set the path for restoring profitability and future growth, though we recognize current challenges in motion pictures business and its turnaround will take some time. “
Though there have been rumors for years that the Japanese company might at some point give up its entertainment assets, Hirai gave a vote of confidence for the operations. „As we look ahead,“ he said, „we see our entertainment businesses as essential parts of Sony, and I look forward to working with Michael towards a smooth transition. „

Anti-Cop Painting In Capitol To Be Removed Next Week

0

NewsHubWASHINGTON — A controversial painting depicting law enforcement as pigs hanging in the Capitol will be ordered removed by the Capitol architect, The Daily Caller learned Friday evening.
The Capitol Architect Stephen T. Ayer received a letter from Washington Republican Rep. Dave Reichert Wednesday asking him to review the painting that was a winner of the Congressional Art Competition from the district of Missouri Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay.
Reichert noted the painting violated competition guidelines by showing “subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature,” which is not allowed.
The painting, “Untitled #1” created by St. Louis high school student David Pulphus, shows police as pigs shooting at protesters in a black St. Louis neighborhood.
According to a spokeswoman for Reichert, “The Speaker’s office has informed Congressman Reichert that the Architect of the Capitol has reviewed Congressman Reichert’s letter and made the determination that the painting is in violation of the House Building Commission’s rules and will be removed Tuesday after the federal holiday.”
“The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to celebrate the creativity of students in every corner of our country – and visitors from around the world see their talents on display when they walk through the halls of our Capitol,” said Rep. Reichert in a statement. “However, with any competition there are rules, and these rules exist for a reason. This painting hung in clear defiance to those rules and was a slap in the face to the countless men and women who put their lives on the line everyday on behalf of our safety and freedom.”
