Pat McAfee delivers patriotic message in aftermath of Charlie Kirk assassination: 'Greatest country on Earth'

Pat McAfee called the United States the «greatest country on Earth» while delivering a patriotic message in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Former NFL kicker Pat McAfee delivered a powerful message on Saturday morning following the assassination of Charlie Kirk earlier in the week.
McAfee, 38, who was wearing a patriotic-themed jacket, delivered the message on the campus of Tennessee ahead of its big game against No. 6 Georgia.
«Getting a chance to be around this beautiful town for the last 24 hours has made me realize that it’s great to be a Tennessee Volunteer», McAfee said to open ESPN’s «College GameDay.»
«It’s not just a great day to be a Tennessee Volunteer, it’s also a great day to live in the greatest country on earth, the United States of America», McAfee said, which sparked «U-S-A» chants from a raucous crowd.
«And all week we’ve seen and heard maybe a lot more than we ever should about what separates us, what makes us different and our differing opinions. But on this beautiful campus on this glorious Saturday you’ll see 102,000-plus in the eighth-largest stadium in the world from different economic backgrounds, political backgrounds, religious backgrounds, you name it all, coming together for one thing: and that’s to kick Georgia’s a—.»

California Lawmakers Once Again Challenge Newsom’s Tech Ties with AI Bill

0

He shot down the last major AI safety framework.
, California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a wildly popular (among the public) and wildly controversial (among tech companies) bill that would have established robust safety guidelines for the development and operation of artificial intelligence models. Now he’ll have a second shot—this time with at least part of the tech industry giving him the green light. On Saturday, California lawmakers passed Senate Bill 53, a landmark piece of legislation that would require AI companies to submit to new safety tests.
Senate Bill 53, which now awaits the governor’s signature to become law in the state, would require companies building “frontier” AI models—systems that require massive amounts of data and computing power to operate—to provide more transparency into their processes. That would include disclosing safety incidents involving dangerous or deceptive behavior by autonomous AI systems, providing more clarity into safety and security protocols and risk evaluations, and providing protections for whistleblowers who are concerned about the potential harms that may come from models they are working on.
The bill—which would apply to the work of companies like OpenAI, Google, xAI, Anthropic, and others—has certainly been dulled from previous attempts to set up a broad safety framework for the AI industry. The bill that Newsom vetoed last year, for instance, would have established a mandatory “kill switch” for models to address the potential of them going rogue. That’s nowhere to be found here. An earlier version of SB 53 also applied the safety requirements to smaller companies, but that has changed. In the version that passed the Senate and Assembly, companies bringing in less than $500 million in annual revenue only have to disclose high-level safety details rather than more granular information, per Politico—a change made in part at the behest of the tech industry.
Whether that’s enough to satisfy Newsom (or more specifically, satisfy the tech companies from whom he would like to continue receiving campaign contributions) is yet to be seen. Anthropic recently softened on the legislation, opting to throw its support behind it just days before it officially passed. But trade groups like the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and Chamber for Progress, which count among its members companies like Amazon, Google, and Meta, have come out in opposition to the bill. OpenAI also signaled its opposition to regulations California has been pursuing without specifically naming SB 53.
After the Trump administration tried and failed to implement a 10-year moratorium on states implementing regulations on AI, California has the opportunity to lead on the issue—which makes sense, given most of the companies at the forefront of the space are operating within its borders. But that fact also seems to be part of the reason Newsom is so shy to pull the trigger on regulations despite all his bluster on many other issues. His political ambitions require money to run, and those companies have a whole lot of it to offer.

Utah residents are reeling knowing the Charlie Kirk suspect is one of their own

0

«This is everywhere. Every community, every town, every state,» one of the suspect’s neighbors said. «It’s going to be everybody’s neighbor, everybody’s classmate. It’s not at all unusual anymore.»
The arrest of Tyler Robinson sent shockwaves through the small community where his family lives. Washington, a city of around 30,000, sits next to St. George in Utah’s southwest corner. It’s a 3 ½-hour drive from the Utah Valley University campus.
The 22-year-old is the suspect in the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk during an event at the campus in Orem. After a 33-hour manhunt, Robinson’s family helped turn him in.
On the morning of Sept. 12, after law enforcement released Robinson’s name, officers from the Washington City Police and Washington County Sheriff’s Office patrolled a quiet street, preventing onlookers from approaching the family’s two-story gray stucco home.
Neighbor Kristin Schwiermann still couldn’t believe the news as she walked by.
«It was a shock that it was him», she says, «I feel sorry for his mother and his dad, because that’s not how they raised him.»
Schwiermann has lived a couple of houses down from the Robinsons for 16 years and has known the suspect since he was a little boy. She got to know the family when Tyler and his siblings attended the elementary school where she works.
«I really wanted them to find out who it was. This is not who I wanted it to be», she says.
The Robinsons and Schwiermann had been part of the same local church, which, like most in this community, belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She hadn’t seen the family at church much recently, though.
Another neighbor, Melissa Tait, says it was a surprise to see her community connected with the shooting. But she believes it says more about the broader rising violence issues facing the country than it does about southwest Utah.
«I’m upset. This is horrific, but I am not shocked», she says.
The residents’ sense of sadness was echoed in a statement from Washington County commissioners.
«To hear that the perpetrator of such terrible political violence was raised in our beautiful community is profoundly shocking», the statement said. «Washington County, like Charlie Kirk himself, stands for the values of faith, freedom, the pursuit of happiness, and justice.»
To critics, however, Kirk was often viewed as a magnet for controversy who used his platform to spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, vaccines and transgender people.
Even after an arrest, many are still reeling in Utah
Nathan Pond, a trauma therapist in Orem, says he’s received almost 20 phone calls from people in the community seeking help since Wednesday’s assassination.
He says Robinson’s arrest has brought some sense of relief to the community, «the fact that they found him, I think everyone’s breathing a sigh of relief because he’s not still wandering around, we didn’t know where he was.»
But he says people in Orem, whether they were on campus that day or not, are still traumatized and in shock.
«A lot of people feel like it could have easily happened to them. People are scared», despite what the data says, he says, «I know the likelihood of being involved in mass shootings is rare. We are so much more likely to die driving home from work than we are to die in a mass shooting. But when we are scared, our sense of perspective diminishes.»
Pond works with a trauma dog, Roni, who patiently sits by him at a coffee shop less than a mile from campus. He says that even with the suspect detained, the fact that there was an assassination in the community has people reeling. «People don’t feel safe. We’re reminded of how fragile our lives are and that feeling alone can create feelings of uneasiness and not feeling safe.»
Pond recalled the last time he saw such high levels of collective trauma.
«I haven’t seen anything at this level since September 11th.» he says referring to the terrorist attacks in 2001. «Everyone was able to see it. Everyone watched the towers fall, all the trauma and stuff that had to do with that was unthinkable», Pond says. «And at this event, everyone got to see someone of influence die on their phone. And I think because of that, I can say I feel like it reached a level of traumatizing for everyone who pulled out their phone», he says.
Sariah and Case Dearden are having breakfast at an outdoor cafe with their 4-month-old baby boy. They moved to Orem because they thought it was a safe community, but now they are rethinking that, they say.
The couple says those 33 hours before the alleged shooter was caught felt like an eternity.
He condemned Kirk’s murder. «I didn’t care for Charlie Kirk. I found him insufferable. But it’s awful what happened to him. No one deserves that, regardless of political beliefs.»
The couple says they’re grateful the suspect is alive. «At least we’re going to get some answers as to why he did it», Sariah says. Her husband Case agrees. «That way justice can be served according to the law», he says. «I know he’s already a coward for committing this assassination. I am glad he didn’t take another cowardly step and kill himself.»
But Case Dearden is concerned things could escalate. «This is an incendiary event. People are going to try and take justice in their own hands, is what I’m afraid of. And I don’t feel any safer that the man has been caught. People are pointing fingers in every direction even more now», he says.

Lance Twiggs: Everything to Know About Tyler Robinson's Transgender Roommate Who Tipped Off Cops after Receiving Incriminating Messages

0

It’s unclear if Twiggs is the same person mentioned in those reports, and his name does not appear in the affidavit.
Charlie Kirk’s killer was living with a transgender roommate who was transitioning from male to female, a law enforcement source revealed. Lance Twiggs has since been identified as the transgender roommate of Tyler Robinson, who tipped off the FBI about the assassin, who was arrested after his father turned him in to the cops.
Twiggs shared text messages with police in which Robinson talked about hiding a gun connected to Wednesday’s shooting of the conservative activist at Utah Valley University (UVU), a law enforcement affidavit shows. His name surfaced as Fox and the New York Post reported that Robinson was living with a «transgender partner» who is cooperating with investigators.
Living with the Enemy
It’s unclear if Twiggs is the same person mentioned in those reports, and his name does not appear in the affidavit. His grandfather, Jerry Twiggs, told the Daily Mail that he couldn’t confirm speculation about whether his grandson is transgender or if there was a transgender motive behind Kirk’s killing.
«I don’t want to comment on that. I’m not sure what his situation is exactly right now», Jerry said, noting that he had never met Robinson.
Jerry also confirmed that his grandson had been in touch with police, but said he hasn’t spoken with him directly since then.
«After he was with the police, he’s been at his house, and there’s no way for us to contact him other than going over there», he said.
Twiggs, a southern Utah native, studied at Utah Tech University, according to his Facebook profile. Robinson, 22, was enrolled in electrician training at a nearby technical college.
Like Robinson, Twiggs was a passionate gamer. On TikTok, he shared clips of himself playing shooting games, with a bio that read: «Becoming TikTok pros one terrible video at a time.» His feed featured gameplay from titles like Apex Legends, Valorant, and Rocket League.
He also posted lighthearted videos, including one where he stuffed spaghetti into an Italian sandwich and another where he microwaved a bottle of Mountain Dew.
Secret Partner
Friends told the Daily Mail that Twiggs and Robinson were both part of a large Discord chat with dozens of gamer friends, many of them from Robinson’s old school, Pine View High. According to an affidavit filed Friday, Robinson’s incriminating messages to Twiggs were also sent through Discord.
Neighbor Cable Phillips, 20, said police showed up at their two-story housing complex around 5:30 a.m. on Friday, blocking off the surrounding area as the investigation unfolded.
Investigators were seen leaving the apartment with paper bags, envelopes, and a personal computer, while a forensics team photographed the outside before moving indoors to examine the property.
As the work went on, neighbors gathered behind police tape, watching quietly in the early morning desert sun.
Josh Kemp, 18, a resident in the area, told The New York Times that Robinson would «always blast music with his roommate» but «never talk to anybody.»
Another neighbor, 11-year-old Oliver Holt, recalled knocking on Robinson’s door last week to ask about odd jobs. He said the alleged shooter was «acting pretty strange» and kept glancing back into his apartment, «acting kind of nervous and scared.»
The apartment at the Fossil Hills housing complex in Saint George — shared by Twiggs and Robinson — spans 1,460 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, according to a Zillow listing. The property details note that the «current owner has roommates bringing in a total of $900/month for just two of the bedrooms.»
