BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The latest on the 89th annual Oscar nominations announced Tuesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from Beverly Hills, California (all times local):
9:20 a.m.
Director Denis Villeneuve is trying to find the right balance of coffee and champagne.
The director learned about his first Oscar nomination Tuesday for „Arrival“ while surrounded by the film’s post production crew, who are also putting the finishing touches on „Blade Runner 2049. “
Villeneuve says, „We had the bad idea to mix strong coffee with Champagne. So it’s both extremes. I’m trying to find the equilibrium right now. “
The mix of euphoria, caffeine and alcohol might not make for the most productive editing day.
Villeneuve says, „I’m going to work today but I don’t know what kind of day it will be. Because we are like already (in party mode) and it is 6 o’clock in the morning. “

Andrew Garfield’s agent is faster than Twitter, at least when it comes to Oscars news.
The actor, who received his first Oscar nomination on Tuesday, says he was in London watching his Twitter feed to see if he was nominated when his British agent called. Garfield says the call surprised him, „Why the hell is she calling me, does she not know that I’m waiting for the nominations to come out? “
Her screams were confirmation that Garfield had been nominated for his work on „Hacksaw Ridge. “ The actor plays pacifist medic in World War II who received the Medal of Honor for his heroics during the battle of Okinawa.
The actor also starred in Martin Scorsese’s „Silence,“ which had Oscar ambitions but was almost entirely shut out on Tuesday. Garfield says he’s equally proud of both films, saying that Scorsese’s film will be talked about for decades and Mel Gibson’s best director nomination represents a „new dawn“ after years of being ostracized.

Michael Shannon says his manager is the one who did the screaming Tuesday after learning the actor was nominated for an Oscar.
Shannon was nominated for best supporting actor for his role in „Nocturnal Animals“ and is currently in Newcastle, England, working on his next film. He says his manager’s hoots and hollers on the other end of the telephone alerted him to the honor. Shannon says his reaction was, „Oh, cool. “
The actor is doing rehearsals on Tuesday, and says he probably won’t get a chance to reflect on his second Oscar nomination until late in the day.
But he says he is honored by the recognition considering that so many peers he respects voted to nominate him. He says, „It’s hard not to be flattered by that, I guess. “

Seven is the magic number of first-time Oscar acting nominees.
The film academy gave seven actors their first acting Oscar nominations for a variety of performances, from Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of a pacifist World War II medic in „Hacksaw Ridge“ to Ruth Negga’s performance in „Loving“ as a woman fighting racial prejudice in the Deep South.

Several Oscar favorites, including previous winners Denzel Washington and Jeff Bridges, were also nominated.
And so too was Meryl Streep, who extended her edge as the most nominated performer in Oscars history with her 20th nomination for „Florence Foster Jenkins. “
