New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was suspended for three games for a violation of team rules, the Major League Baseball club announced Sunday.
Harvey, a 28-year-old right-hander, had been scheduled to start Sunday afternoon’s home contest against the Miami Marlins.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson revealed the ban but did not disclose details of why Harvey was suspended and neither did Mets manager Terry Collins.
Harvey, who was suspended without pay, plans to file a grievance over his unpaid suspension, according to FanRag Sports .
According to the sports site, Harvey didn’ t go to the ballpark Saturday, which is seemingly why he was suspended even though the Mets are keeping a tight lid on the details.
‚We’ll keep it in-house, the way it’s supposed to be, ‚ Collins said.
‚There are things with this job that certainly are internal that the public can’t see, and how hard it is, and this one’s a tough one.
‚So we hope to put it behind us and move forward, ‚ Collins added.
Collins did note that the franchise thought it was clear that baseball wasn’t Harvey’s ‚top priority‘ right now.
Harvey reportedly sees it as a miscommunication, sources told FanRag Sports.
Individuals close to him said he played golf early Saturday and got a headache when he returned home around 1pm.
He advised the Mets of the headache and went to the ballpark on Sunday when he was scheduled to pitch. He was then notified of the suspension.
According to the Mets‘ schedule, Harvey would be back in action on May 10 when the team goes up against the San Francisco Giants.
Harvey is 2-2 with a 5.14 earned-run average over 35 innings in six starts this season.
He underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery that ended his 2016 season after only 17 starts, going 4-10 with a 4.86 earned run average (ERA) .
At 14-15, the Mets are two games ahead of Miami in second in the National League East division but still 6 1/2 games behind division-leader Washington.
Washington currently has the best record in the major leagues at 21-9.
