French President Emmaneul Macron said he had „taken steps“ to strip Weinstein of the accolade bestowed on him in 2012.
Harvey Weinstein will lose his Legion of Honor award from the French government over the spiraling sex-harassment and rape allegations against him, the county’s president said Sunday.
French President Emmaneul Macron said in a TV interview that he had “taken steps” to strip Weinstein of the accolade bestowed on him in 2012 by then-President Nicholas Sarkozy, according to AFP.
Macron’s announcement came after a spokeswoman said Macron thought the scandal surrounding Weinstein “is in contradiction with honor.”
The Legion of Honor, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is a military and civilian order of merit that can be conferred on anyone who swears to uphold the French traditions of liberty and equality.
The Grande Chancellerie de la Legion d‘honneur is the body in charge of the awarding the medal, a five-armed Maltese Cross with a profile of “Marianne,” the national symbol, in its center.
The cascade of sordid accusations against Weinstein has previously led to his o uster from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – which awards the Oscars – and his suspension by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Lawmakers in the UK have also called on Prime Minister Theresa May to revoke the Commander of the Order of the British Empire honor bestowed on him in 2004.
