The Giants will deactivate Geno Smith this week and make Webb the backup for Sunday’s season finale against Washington, Steve Spagnuolo said Wednesday.
The Giants have said Eli Manning will start Week 17, but it’s the first game Webb will be active for, which suggests he will play.
Prior to the firings of head coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese, the Giants had planned to evaluate the other quarterbacks starting with Geno Smith and eventually Webb. After Smith played in a Week 13 loss to the Raiders, McAdoo and Reese were fired and the plan was seemingly abandoned as Manning has played the last three games.
The Giants are currently poised to have the second-overall pick in the draft and could potentially land UCLA’s Josh Rosen or USC’s Sam Darnold, but many believe they need to see what they have in Webb before drafting a new franchise quarterback.
