In light of Carrie Fisher ’s death, her screen test for 1977’s “Star Wars” (later re-titled “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”) has resurfaced as fans pay tribute to the late actress.
The video, originally posted on YouTube in 2006, shows a fresh-faced Fisher auditioning as Princess Leia alongside Harrison Ford ’s Hans Solo. Both engage in a scene where Leia describes the Rebellion’s plan to take down the Death Star, which appears halfway through the film.
The tape ends with Fisher stating her name and age as she smiles to the camera.
Although she was, in a way, born Hollywood royalty (to Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher), Fisher’s role in the Star Wars franchise caused her career to skyrocket.
Still the role was rife with controversy. Fisher noted in her 2011 memoir “Shockaholic” that she was asked to lose 10 pounds in order to play the leader of the Rebel Alliance. “They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters!” Fisher stated in an interview last year. “Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”
The actress and writer also recently revealed that she and Ford — who was married to Mary Marquardt at the time — had a three-month-long affair while filming “Star Wars.”
In response to her death, Ford wrote, “Carrie was one-of-a-kind…brilliant, original… Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely.”
