Xiaomi’s Redmi series has been immensely popular, with the current-gen Redmi Note 4 ( review) and Redmi 4 ( review) as well as 4A ( review) ranking among the top 5 best-selling smartphones in the country. The brand has just launched the Redmi 5A ( first impressions) in India as the “Desh Ka Smartphone” and will be unveiling the Redmi 5 in China next week. So if you are wondering what all the Redmi 5 might bring, then here’s what the rumours and leaks suggest about the upcoming offering from Xiaomi.
While the Redmi Note series has always offered large displays, things might change with the Redmi 5 as it’s expected to follow the bezel-less trend, as per rumours. This will allow the brand to include a larger 5.7-inch 720p display with an 18:9 ratio in a more compact form factor. Since the Redmi 4 featured a metal-clad body, we expect to see a solid unibody construction in the case of its successor too. The placement of other controls is expected to remain the same, i.e. a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and a micro-USB port on the bottom along with the speaker grille.
According to the leaked listing on China Telecom’s website, the Redmi 5 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 – which should offer better performance than its predecessor which utilised the Snapdragon 430 chipset. The processor will be paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. That said, we can expect more affordable variants of the smartphone featuring lower RAM and storage. The phone is expected to run MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat.
In the optics department, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 is expected to offer a 12-megapixel primary camera module with an LED flash and a 5-megapixel selfie camera with a soft LED flash. According to the listing, the upcoming phone will be fuelled by a 3,300mAh battery – lower than the 4,100mAh unit on the Redmi 4. This is where the Xiaomi Redmi 5 might disappoint the fans. However, the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 should still be able to deliver good battery life.
While there’s no indication of the pricing of the Xiaomi Redmi 5, we’re certain that it’ll be affordable. And we won’t have to wait long to know that as the brand has officially teased its announcement in China on December 7th. The phone will go up for sale on December 12th. Along with the Redmi 5, Xiaomi is also expected to launch the Redmi 5 Plus, which could be a slightly beefed-up variant of the Redmi 5 with the same 18:9 display and larger battery.
