Voters approved a constitutional amendment back in 2010 which would have earmark three-eighths of a one percent state sales tax increase for the natural resources trust fund.
Lawmakers never approved the funding.
A bill is being drafted to attach that funding for mental health initiatives after a Des Moines Register poll shows 67 percent of Iowans support the tax. to help pay for both.
“We have awesome resources here and we ought to take care of them,” Altoona resident Nancy Wells said. “We should be doing everything possible to make sure our water is good and not full of farm chemicals.“
A bill for a one-cent sales tax to fund the Natural Resources Trust is now in the Senate.
Lawmakers voted the same measure down in 2017.
