Users have reported that even when they haven’t said anything or spoken any command to Alexa, it will start laughing.
One of the twitter users @taylorkatelynne wrote, „So my mom & I are just sitting in the living room, neither of us said a word & our Alexa lit up and laughed for no reason. she didn’t even say anything, just laughed. We unplugged her.“
Said another Twitter user who goes by the name @vedantNAIK, „I live alone and have lights controlled by Amazon Echo. Tonight, while sleeping, I closed my eyes and said „Alexa, lamp off.“ I heard a woman laugh, and lights were still on. Now, I know that stupid device heard „laugh“ instead of „lamp off“, but I can’t sleep anymore….. #fml.“
Amazon has acknowledged the issue and said that it was working on to fix it. The company in its statement to The Verge has said it was aware of the problem. It said that it would disable the phrase „Alexa, laugh“ and change the command to „Alexa, can you laugh?“ According to the same report, Amazon claims that the sudden laugh could be due to Alexa hearing wrong commands. „In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase „Alexa, laugh.“
The company has also changed Alexa’s response to command for laugh. The voice assistant will now say “ Sure, I can laugh“ followed by the outburst instead of just laughing right away.
However, it should be noted that none of the users reporting the issue on talked about any such command. Instead some users have said that there was no noise in the room, nobody was talking and Alexa started laughing for no reason.
This isn’t the first time that Alexa is facing such „technical“ issue. Only a week or two ago, users complaint of Alexa losing its voice for Amazon’s big Super Bowl ad. Users said that it Alexa suddenly went unresponsive and attempting to interact gave responses like „I’m not sure what went wrong“ or „Sorry, something went wrong“ or a sound followed by a message „Sorry, your Echo Dot lost its connection.“
