Way back in January 2017 BWM announced that it was working with Microsoft to bring that company’s Connected Car services to their vehicles.
We have heard very little since then, but the company recently revealed more details about their OS7 car operating system, which will be included in connected vehicles with multiple screens and built-in e-SIM capabilities.
Besides its numerous other features, the operating system will feature a “Start page” of sorts which can be populated with up to 4 live tiles bearing relevant information, with a further 9 pages available in total, which can be navigated by touch, gesture or the iDrive wheel.
Besides taking inspiration from Microsoft, BMW will also be working with Microsoft Azure to store and process the real-time data collected by their fleet of vehicles, and to allow car-to-car communication so vehicles can warn each other of road traffic conditions or hazards on the road.
Last year BMW said that the company was bringing Microsoft’s Cortana to their car, allowing drivers to check out their schedule, add new reminders, manage their upcoming events, manage their to-do lists, get the latest news on a certain topic, or more. Unfortunately, it is not clear if this is still on the roadmap, as BMW did not mention this in their press release.
At CES 2017 Nissan also signed up for Microsoft’s Connected Car vision, and in a more recent press release, Nissan said the connected system will appear in 2018 and be used in 90 percent of vehicles built by Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi, who collectively sell nearly 10 million vehicles worldwide each year.
