The Redmi Y2, Xiaomi’s latest budget offering, is up for second flash sale in India today. The phone was officially unveiled a few weeks ago and is intended to be the perfect companion for selfie lovers who want an affordable smartphone with a capable camera setup. Let’s take a look at all the relevant about this device as it goes on sale.
There are two storage variants of the Redmi Y2 that have been priced accordingly. The first model offers 3GB of RAM coupled with 32GB of onboard storage for a price of Rs. 9,999. You can get a storage upgrade with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory for Rs.12,999. You also get the option to choose between three different colours of the Redmi Y2: Grey, Gold and Rose Gold. To grab one of these smartphones, head on over to Amazon India or Mi Online Store India by 12 PM today (June 19).
Xiaomi has also partnered up with Airtel to provide up to Rs.1,800 cashback and up to 240GB of 4G data for Airtel network users.
The Redmi Y2 has been equipped with a 5.99-inch screen that comes with a 1440 x 720 HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. This is an IPS LCD panel that is claimed to rear 450 nits of brightness, has a pixel density of 269 PPI, along with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. This panel is also said to cover 70.8% of the NTSC colour gamut. Powering the device will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC which has a quad-core CPU clocked at 2.2GHz alongside an Adreno 506 GPU. It is odd that Xiaomi would go with such an old CPU on a 2018 smartphone even if it is a budget offering.
Even though this is a budget offering, Xiaomi did not hold back with offering a range of useful features on the Redmi Y2. The first noticeable addition is the hybrid SIM card and microSD card tray that allows the simultaneous use of two SIM cards and a microSD card. The other useful feature on this smartphone is the included IR blaster that will let you control various devices such as TVs and digital receivers directly from your smartphone.
Xiaomi hasn’t failed to assert how this phone is meant for Indian youth that is obsessed with photography and selfies. There is a 16MP camera located at the front that comes with a soft-toned LED for better low light selfies. This camera is said to come with auto-HDR mode as well. There are also various AI enhancements for precise bokeh effects and beauty touch-ups. The rear camera, on the other hand, employs a dual-sensor configuration where the primary lens measures 12MP with the secondary lens being a 5MP sensor.
In terms of software, the phone is going to ship with Android 8.1 Oreo loaded as default. This will come with the MIUI 9.5 user interface baked on top of the OS. For security, the front camera is capable of Face Unlock, while a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is also provided. Then we have the battery of the Redmi Y2 which measures 3,080mAh. This comes with 10W charging support. This isn’t the fastest we have seen but is acceptable for a phone of this price. Charging is also achieved over the microUSB 2.0 port which isn’t surprising in this case. The standard range of connectivity options included are Wi-Fi 802/11 a/b/g/n standard, with Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy, GPS, IR blaster, and 4G VoLTE support .
