Linebacker could play in preseason game this weekend.
And then there was none.
Before stepping on the field for the Chicago Bears, Roquan Smith wanted to make sure a new NFL rule wouldn’t cost him any of his well-earned money as the eighth overall pick.
After 29 days and 15 missed practices, the two sides have a deal, featuring $18.4 million fully guaranteed and a healthy signing bonus.
Smith was the last rookie to sign a contract.
According to ESPN, the linebacker and his agent were worried the Bears would be able to reclaim guaranteed money if Smith was suspended under the league’s new helmet-contact rules.
Smith will be available to the media Tuesday and could play in Chicago’s next preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Saturday.
