Reddit has started banning several communities which exist for the sole purpose of promoting pirated content. Multiple subreddits which posted links to movies and TV shows have been closed for good.
Policing user-submitted content on sites with forums is a tough job, and not only because it involves maintaining constructive discussions, but because it also requires preventing the spread of pirated content. One such website is Reddit, also known as „the front page of the internet“, which solely relies on content submitted by its tens of millions of users.
After warning its communities against sharing copyright-infringing content a few months ago, Reddit has now started banning them for continued violation of its rules.
TorrentFreak reports that multiple subreddits which existed for the sole purpose of sharing links to copyright-infringing content being hosted on external websites. One such community is the (previously) 23,000-strong r/FullMoviesOnAnything, which was notorious for sharing links to movie torrents on piracy-focused websites.
Other examples in the past few days include r/FullMoviesOnAnything_, r/TVShowsOnAnything, r/fullmovies, r/fullmoviesonline, and r/crackedsoftware. While Reddit doesn’t provide a reason for most of the communities that it bans, it’s pretty clear that it’s because of the promotion of pirated content.
All in all, it’s a clear indication that users of the website will have to be more careful of the content that they post on Reddit, now that the administrators there are taking swift and stern actions against repeat copyright offenders.
