The Exynos 9820 is expected to power the upcoming Galaxy S10 and any other flagship device Samsung plans to unveil in 2019.
Samsung has just announced its newest flagship processor in the Exynos 9 series and no surprises the company is calling this the Exynos 9820. The chipset succeeds the Exynos 9810 SoC that has powered this year’s flagships like the Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and the Galaxy Note 9. The Exynos 9820 is expected to power the upcoming Galaxy S10 and any other flagship device Samsung plans to unveil in 2019.
With the Exynos 9820, Samsung is touting some heavy AI prowess thanks to an enhanced Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The company claims that the new NPU will allow the chip to perform AI tasks seven times faster than its predecessor. The response time will also be faster as the tasks will be carried out directly on the device rather than sending it to a server. Samsung is teasing new „experiences“ such as instantly adjusting camera settings for a shot based on the surrounding or by recognising objects to provide information in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality settings.
The chipset also features a fourth-generation custom CPU. The new custom core bumps single-sore performance by 20 per cent and multi-core performance by 15 per cent compared to the Exynos 9810 chip. It also delivers a 40 per cent improvement in power efficiency compared to its predecessor. Samsung says switching between apps and loading data will be much faster with the new Exynos 9820 chip.
The next-gen flagship chipset also comes with the latest Mali-G76 GPU which promises to deliver a 40 per cent boost in performance and 35 per cent better power saving for longer play time of graphic-intensive games. The Exynos 9820 embeds a 2.0-gigabits-per-second (Gbps) LTE Advanced Pro modem for fast mobile broadband speeds of 2.0Gbps downlink with 8x carrier aggregation (CA) and 316Mbps uplink. The modem also supports 4×4 MIMO, 256-QAM and Licensed-Assisted Access (eLAA) technology to deliver stable yet fast speeds.
„As AI-related services expand and their utilization diversify in mobile devices, their processors require higher computational capabilities and efficiency,“ said Ben Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. „The AI capabilities in the Exynos 9 Series 9820 will provide a new dimension of performance in smart devices through an integrated NPU, high-performance fourth-generation custom CPU core, 2.0Gbps LTE modem and improved multimedia performance.“
The Exynos 9820 is expected to go into mass production by the end of the year. We expect the Galaxy S10 to rock the new chipset in most markets including India. We could also see the SoC power the upcoming Galaxy F foldable phone and a possible Galaxy Note 10 in 2019.
