Attempting to cash in her appeal as a moderate, U. S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar Monday night gave an appeal for “unity” in a speech during the first night of the Democratic National Convention. Standing at a podium in St. Paul, with the Capitol dome behind her, Klobuchar appeared remotely in the nation’s first virtual convention — a result of the coronavirus pandemic for the event that had been scheduled for Milwaukee. “If you feel stuck in the middle of the extremes of our politics, if you are tired of the noise and the nonsense, you have a home with me, and you have a home with Joe Biden,” Klobuchar said, recalling words from her speech endorsing Biden after bowing out of the race earlier this year. In remarks that lasted barely over four minutes — brevity was a hallmark of the made-for-TV event — Klobuchar’s single theme was unity, at one point casting the nation’s motto in terms familiar to the North Star State.
