So far Microsoft’s role in the sale of the US division of TikTok has been mainly rumour, but today the company released a statement which for the first time confirms their intent to purchase the company, and also reveals that more than the US market is involved.
In the statement, Microsoft confirmed that the deal would include TikTok services in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, which reads like the list of the 5 eyes countries except for UK.
Microsoft also notes that it intends to conclude the deal by the 15th September.
The proposed deal has been surprisingly well received by analysts, who see it as a potential re-entry into the consumer market for Microsoft. The White House has been less enthusiastic, which has resulted in discussions being put temporarily on hold. Today’s report suggests the process is once again in motion.
