Minnesota may be experiencing its worst surge in coronavirus cases since the pandemic began, but don’t expect substantial changes to existing restrictions on businesses and gatherings. Three of the five measures about the state’s outbreak are already in the caution zone including case growth, new hospitalizations and community transmission of the coronavirus. But health officials say the restrictions now in place could still work to slow the spread if Minnesotans followed them more consistently. Mask wearing, social distancing, avoiding groups and staying home when sick are key to mitigating the spread of COVID-19, health officials say. And while most Minnesotans are doing those things now when they are out and about, they are not using the same cautions with friends and at private gatherings. That’s likely the reason why community transmission — when people get sick without a direct connection to another positive person — is responsible for 38 percent of new cases. Further restrictions wouldn’t likely have much of an impact, although health officials insist they remain on the table if things become especially dire.
