After winning third Defensive Player of the Year Award, he sets sights on lifting Super Bowl LVI trophy at SoFi Stadium.
Aaron Donald reminded everyone listening Sunday that he has an all-consuming passion for the Super Bowl. Just, maybe, not for Sunday’s Super Bowl. “I’ll probably watch a little of it, not too much,” the Rams defensive tackle said a few hours before the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicked off at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. “I think it’s going to be a fun game to watch. But if it ain’t me playing in, my team, I don’t care too much about it.” Next year’s Super Bowl, to be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, now that interests him. “That’s what I’m working for, and I know that’s what I know these coaches and the players on (the Rams) are working for,” Donald said. “No matter where it would be played, but it would be that much better if we can do it back in L.A.” Donald spoke on Zoom the day after he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year for a record-tying third time Saturday night. Some things about Donald don’t change: The award certifies that he’s still on top of his game and everyone else’s. His offseason workouts remain unsurpassed; after a week off, he planned to be back in the gym Monday. And getting back to the Super Bowl and winning this time still tops his short list of unaccomplished goals. But a lot is changing: Donald turns 30 before next season, and comes off the worst injury of his seven-year career, the rib injury that limited his plays and effectiveness in the Rams’ playoff loss at Green Bay.
