Republican governors from 12 states, led by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, called on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its precedent allowing abortion Thursday, filing a brief in an upcoming case concerning Mississippi’s abortion ban that argues states should be left to decide themselves whether or not abortion is legally permissible. “For too long, the Federal Government has dived (not just waded) into issues reserved to the States under the Constitution. Although those forays usually come from the political branches, they have, on occasion, come from this Court as well,” the governors wrote. “Roe and Casey are quintessential examples of such misadventures.” In a statement to Forbes, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Alexis McGill Johnson said with their court brief Thursday, “these governors are making it crystal clear that access to abortion is not safe in their state, no matter what the Supreme Court decides.” “By asking the court to overturn 50 years of precedent, they are asking for permission to ban abortion in their states and deny their citizens the freedom to make their own personal health care decisions,” McGill Johnson said, adding it is “immoral and irresponsible that these Governors continue to prioritize reducing access to essential health care over the safety of their citizens.
