The Sudanese military arrested the country’s prime minister and fired at protesters Monday, imperiling an already-fraught transition to democracy.
The United States cut off $700 million in emergency assistance to Sudan on Monday, hours after military officials arrested Sudan’s civilian government leaders, fired at protesters and imperiled the country’s nascent transition to democracy. $423 million. That’s how much assistance the United States committed to Sudan in the 2021 fiscal year, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development. The vast majority of that aid was earmarked for humanitarian purposes, including emergency food aid. Sudanese Prime Minister Abdulla Hamdok, his wife and several members of his government were arrested by the country’s military Monday, according to multiple reports.
