Tropical Storm Alex becomes first named storm of Atlantic hurricane season, NC beaches under rip current risk

Potential Tropical Cyclone One formed in the Atlantic this week and was expected to develop into a Tropical Storm. However, conditions in the atmosphere Saturday were no longer favoring a tropical storm, and as the system moved closer toward Florida, it began to weaken.
One of our first tropical systems of the season has realized its potential. Tropical Storm Alex has formed as of the 2 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center on Sunday, becoming the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The cyclone formed in the Atlantic this week and was expected to develop into a Tropical Storm eventually. However, conditions in the atmosphere Saturday were no longer favoring a tropical storm, and as the system moved closer toward Florida, it began to weaken. As of Sunday morning, Alex has 50 mile-per-hour winds and is moving northeast toward Bermuda, where it will pass by on Monday.
