TomTom and Microsoft plan to bring natural language controls to vehicles with generative AI.
Voice controls first came to cars decades ago, but in all that time, the experience has almost always been terrible. That’s in part due to the clunky prompts you had to memorize. TomTom and Microsoft want to change that through the power of generative AI.
The two companies announced the collaboration today and made promises invoking images of K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider. With generative AI (built upon Microsoft’s implementation of OpenAI), you can use natural-speaking phrases to control your car.
And not just the age-old ask of calling or texting a friend. According to the company, you could use voice commands to „navigate to a certain location, find specific stops along their route, and vocally control onboard systems to, for instance, turn up the temperature, open windows, or change radio stations.
