Scrutiny intensifies over security lapses surrounding the Charlie Kirk shooting

0

Security experts question threat assessment after Charlie Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University, as federal authorities continue manhunt for suspect.
Security experts are questioning the adequacy of the threat assessment carried out ahead of Charlie Kirk’s scheduled event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, where the conservative activist was assassinated in front of thousands of attendees. The scrutiny comes as federal authorities end a manhunt for the suspect linked to the attack.
„Universities have so many speakers that come on campus all the time. Rarely do they plan for somebody taking a longer-range shot with a rifle“, explained retired Marine Lt. Col. Hal Kempfer in an interview with Fox News Digital.
„Sniper assassinations are far less common and even in active shooter scenarios, usually the active shooter gets into a closed space where the person is very close to where the victims are“, he said, noting the immense difficulty of defending against an assailant who can strike from a concealed, elevated, or distant position.
„It’s a lot more involved to carry out and plan for counter-sniper missions“, Kempfer said, emphasizing that this level of violence was never anticipated at what was meant to be a debate-style discussion.
The revelation underscores an unprecedented challenge confronting law enforcement as they work to protect political rallies on college campuses and in communities nationwide.
„The campus has limited security. They don’t have an unlimited budget for this. They had six officers out there, which for any college campus security force, that’s not an insubstantial number of officers. But they also had 3,000 people at this event“, Kempfer said.
Wednesday’s event, the first in what was supposed to be a series Turning Point USA’s „American Comeback Tour“, was nothing out of the ordinary. Kirk, the charismatic founder of the nation’s conservative youth activist group, gained recognition for his signature political debates on college campuses.
In addition to local security, Kirk, who spoke outdoors, was flanked by his personal security detail.
Despite those measures, former FBI special agent Stuart Kaplan said the gunman may have established his position on the rooftop ahead of time, which made it difficult for security to spot him.
„He was clearly undetected, there was no indication that anybody saw him on this rooftop“, Kaplan told Fox News host Jesse Watters in an interview on Wednesday. „This was a very well-planned, very well-orchestrated plot that was put in motion days before“, he said, adding that the suspect „had some level of sophistication to have mapped out exactly how this was going to go down.“
That assessment was echoed by former New York State Senator and Homeland Security advisor Michael Balboni, who said, „One shot hitting the target from 200 meters away and then escaping without anybody seeing them—those are the hallmarks of a professional.“
„The hardest thing to do is anticipate where the threat comes from and what threats there are. I would argue that in an open air setting like this, a rifle attack is probably the most difficult thing to stop“, Balboni added in an interview on Fox News 5.
Kaplan said that the gunmen also thought through how to evade law enforcement after taking the fatal shot.
Kempfer noted that the gun recovered by authorities on Thursday was a bolt-action rifle, a common hunting weapon valued for its durability and reliability. Unlike semi-automatic weapons, he explained, a bolt-action rifle often retains the spent cartridge in the chamber rather than ejecting it, leaving no shell casings—or „brass“—for investigators to collect.
„That’s just one of those things where you, if you’ve thought it through, you know that you can’t leave any forensic evidence for investigators to work with“, he said.
During a press conference on Friday, authorities announced they had Tyler Robinson in custody after he was turned into law enforcement by his own family. Robinson was identified following a series of videos and photos released by the FBI.
In a photo released on Thursday, the individual authorities were looking for was wearing a hat, sunglasses, and an American flag T-shirt with an eagle on it.

Some T-Mobile subscribers shouldn't pre-order their new iPhone from the Apple Store website

0

The Apple Store site shows some T-Mobile subscribers receiving less than half of the amount for their trade-in as promised.
There will be plenty of screaming, cursing, and aggravation today as the new iPhone 17 series becomes available for those looking to pre-order one of the new phones. According to early reports, the new models are seeing heavy demand compared to the tepid response seen with last year’s iPhone 16 line. As we pointed out last Tuesday when Apple introduced the new handsets, the „Big 3“ carriers have special deals for the new iPhone 17 line, including some that offer big discounts with a trade-in.
On social media, T-Mobile subscribers are saying that on Apple’s website, they are receiving the wrong amount of credit for their trade. On Reddit, a subscriber with the username „armendegga“ wrote, „Just fyi – went through the order. It’s still not showing the corrected price of $1100 off… I reached out to T-Force to make sure it’s a glitch and will still receive the full credit. Otherwise I’ll cancel the order.“
To make sure that he would receive the correct amount of credit for his trade-in, the T-Mobile subscriber contacted the carrier’s elite customer service crew, T-Force, and received a message back stating that the customer is entitled to the $1,100 credit he expected instead of the incorrect $520 posted on the Apple Store website.
Another Reddit subscriber, this one using the handle of dave_campbell was also dealing with this problem earlier today. He wrote, „Pricing shows correct on the T-Mobile site but once I get to the cart it shows the discounts but then wants me to pay $400 and lists me getting a $45 monthly credit . something is wacky for sure.
Others also complained on Reddit about seeing the wrong trade-in amount when they were just about to order their new phone, taking advantage of T-Mobile’s deal via the Apple Store site. While you might expect mistakes like this to keep some T-Mobile customers on the sidelines, or turning to the controversial T-Life app to order their new iPhone, it appears that many of the Redditors facing the same issue put their faith in T-Mobile and placed their orders anyway, even if the trade-in value on the screen was incorrect.
Personally, I would avoid ordering a new iPhone if a glitch in the ordering platform shows a trade-in value less than the amount promised by my carrier. I might order if I had a note from T-Force, like that one T-Mobile subscriber, that confirms the amount of the credit I will receive from the device I trade in. Unless you take the time to contact T-Force, you probably should use an alternate way to pre-order your phone, or wait for Apple to make the correction.
But that’s the problem, isn’t it? With the brisk pre-orders that the iPhone 17 series is receiving, any delay could push back the date that you receive your new iPhone. Or, for the sake of expediency, you might decide to pre-order a different model, or the same model in a color that you don’t want. But you might not be happy about settling for a model or color that is not your first choice.
If you are a T-Mobile subscriber and are in this predicament now, you might want to get written clarification from T-Force. You can do this by sending a DM (Direct Message) to @TMobileHelp. Or, go to the official T-Mobile Facebook page and send a private message through Messenger. You can also request T-Force when chatting with a T-Mobile agent in the T-Mobile app or website.
Good news everyone! Over the past year we’ve been working on an exciting passion project of ours and we’re thrilled to announce it will be ready to release in just a few short months.

The 6 Biggest Moments in the Shocking ‘Foundation’ Season 3 Finale

0

Breaking down all the wild reveals, twists, and WTF choices in ‚The Darkness.‘
Foundation season three has come to an end, but it still feels like there’s so much story left to tell. Thank goodness Apple TV+ confirmed just yesterday that season four is on the way! But before we ponder what’s next, we must discuss the season finale.
“The Darkness” was… well, a lot sure did happen, didn’t it?
Here are the six most important takeaways from the Foundation season three finale. The first two are admittedly not too outrageous, but buckle up for the rest.
The Foundation Finally Met the Second Foundation
After hundreds of years spent operating in completely different spheres—and with the Foundation not even knowing that Hari Seldon had incorporated a Second Foundation as a backup to his original plan—the two groups finally came face-to-face. The Foundation’s home of New Terminus is under siege by the Mule, and its ambassador on Trantor, Ambassador Quent, isn’t sure what to do now that Empire has begun to implode.
With a nudge from Demerzel and carrying Kalle’s Ninth Proof of Folding in her arms, Quent hurries to the Imperial Library, where the secret-keeping librarian brings her to meet… the Second Foundation’s First Speaker, Preem Palver.
He’s holding the Prime Radiant, and you can feel instant feelings of relief and warmth pass between them. This was one of few flashes of hope in “The Darkness.” Quent finds her new purpose, Palver finds an important new ally—and the two halves of Foundation finally come together.Gaal’s Escape
After her long-awaited confrontation with the Mule didn’t quite go as planned (more on that below), Gaal Dornick, the only one in her landing party to escape “conversion,” busted out of the space station above New Terminus and surfed her way through the planet’s orbit to be scooped up by the Beggar’s Lament.
It was a daring move born out of desperation, but once she’s safely aboard, there’s no time to relax. Foundation’s ships are in hot pursuit, and Hari Seldon—having taken up residence in the Beggar’s network—is extremely miffed to learn Gaal has lied to him in order to secure his help.
Hologram Hari wants a body and to be freed from eternal boredom in the Vault, and chances of that aren’t looking great. Nobody knows how the other digital version of Hari got his bonus body back in season two, including Gaal, probably the smartest person in the post-Hari galaxy.
As Gaal jumps to places unknown, we have no idea what lies ahead for her. Does Hari get to travel with her as part of the ship, as he has done in the past? Where are they going: to the Second Foundation’s home on Ignis, to Trantor, or some other location? How’s Gaal feeling after the Mule confrontation went so sideways—something she’s been imagining, planning for, and worrying about for most of her 300-plus years of existence?Dusk Became Darkness
There were inklings all season that Brother Dusk wasn’t going to gracefully face his predestined demise; as the aging Cleon counted down the remaining hours in his life, he revealed his truly monstrous capabilities. In last week’s “The Paths That Choose Us,” he used his black hole bomb to disintegrate a massive space station and two planets because their representatives on Trantor ticked him off. In “The Darkness,” he turned that vindictive spirit on Empire itself.
The finale’s title is aptly chosen. The next stage after Brother Dusk is Brother Darkness, and “darkness” is what Seldon predicted would come after the fall of Empire. Brother Dusk, who becomes the longest-living Brother Darkness after he sneaks past the euthanasia room and its blasting beam of death, could indeed live for many more years thanks to the self-repairing nanites implanted in his body.
He literally triggers the fall of Empire when he systematically destroys all the clones except the most freshly hatched infant (more on that below), blowing up all the Cleons floating around on standby. They’re stacked in glass chambers to the top of the palace, and as each vessel cracks open, the bodies rain down, forming a gruesome, bloody pile of flesh.
Brother Darkness also kills Brother Day, who had his nanites removed earlier this season for his own reasons, telling him, “I will not have my world continue without me.”
As he sits on the throne holding Empire’s Prime Radiant, he merrily contemplates what he’s done, and perhaps his future as a solo ruler. What he doesn’t know, of course, is that Brother Dawn is still alive—battered and without his own nanites, but alive—on that space station above New Terminus.Demerzel’s Death
I had some theories about what might happen in “The Darkness,” but this took me completely by surprise. Demerzel, the ancient robot whose existential journey anchored season three’s most emotional moments, is no more.
After realizing Brother Darkness had destroyed almost every Empire clone-in-waiting, Demerzel—whose programming requires her to serve Empire, no matter the cost, a directive going all the way back to the very first Cleon—races through the palace trying to save the infant Brother Dawn. A very smug Darkness places the baby directly below the death ray used to exterminate Cleons who’re past their use-by date, brandishing the controller as Demerzel realizes what’s at stake.
“He played it perfectly,” she realizes, and she’s powerless to stop herself from stepping into the beam and shielding the baby. “Mother” and “child” both perish—I rewound it a few times to see if maybe she could have jumped in there, grabbed the kid, and jumped back out? Guess not—but Demerzel’s screaming, fiery, dripping-gold-robot-blood breakdown is so much more agonizing. The Mule Reveal
Perceptive viewers may have started to pick up on the fact that there was something off about the villainous Mule, even before Hari Seldon pointed out his story didn’t quite add up. Early in the season, the Mule makes an offhand mention of sometimes feeling like his life isn’t his own, and we finally get the reason in “The Darkness.” The pirate isn’t the Mule at all. The pirate also isn’t Magnifico Giganticus, the cosmic balladeer, as he is in the books.
The Mule is… Bayta Mallow, also a character pulled from the original Asimov Foundation stories that gets quite the makeover for the TV series.
Bayta was introduced early in season three as a rich newlywed gleefully enjoying her life as a famous influencer. It didn’t take long for Foundation to hint at a much deeper intelligence lurking below all the glamour—but most probably didn’t guess she was secretly the Mule, the psychic powerhouse hellbent on forcing the entire galaxy to love her by any means necessary.
You can add Gaal to that list of people shocked by the truth; after she slashed the pirate’s throat, she realized, “I can still feel someone in my head.” It’s Bayta! Freaking Bayta!
And though Bayta tells her horrified husband, “I’m going to explain all of it, I promise,” the audience doesn’t get to hear that conversation, because we flee the scene with Gaal after Gaal manages to rip her mind out of the Mule’s searching grasp. The Brazen Head Did What?
Demerzel long believed she was the last robot standing, but Brother Day discovered a robot skull with life still in it. Demerzel and Day don’t live to see it, but the skull—the Brazen Head, as it’s called by people on Trantor who worship it in secret—awakens in the final moments of “The Darkness.”
It sends out a handshake signal, then initiates a “clasp”—the term used when robots communicate with each other. Who’s it talking to? The scene cuts to the mysterious character we’ve known as Kalle, the legendary mathematician whose Ninth Proof of Folding has been so important to the Foundation and psychohistory. She, or someone who takes on her form, met with Demerzel inside the Prime Radiant; she also appeared to Hologram Hari Seldon inside his Vault. In the real world, she helped the second Hologram Hari get a new human body, and earlier this season, she reappeared to escort him off this mortal coil.
We’ve never been certain who she really is, but now we have an idea. “Interesting,” she remarks as the signals appear. “One of us is seeking a clasp, and from Trantor, no less.”
There’s another robot in the room; it resembles Brother Day in some ways, but it’s not Brother Day. The clasp isn’t coming from Demerzel, they agree; Demerzel wasn’t able to clasp, as it turns out. The conversation continues:
“Perhaps someone is seeking to embroil us in the struggle.” “Someone must have succeeded.” “Then all of the pieces are in place.”
While we’re pondering what the hell they’re talking about, the shot pulls out and shows us where these robots are gathered. They’re on the moon. Earth’s moon. You can see Earth very clearly in the background.
What does it all mean, and what’s going to happen next? Season four has yet to be announced, but the fact that season three feels so unresolved seems like it could be a good sign? Let us know your thoughts about “The Darkness”—and your season four hopes—below.

Galaxy S25 Edge crushes the iPhone Air performance in benchmark tests, but only sometimes

0

On average, Apple’s ultra-slim flagship appears to be faster, but that may quickly change.
Apple has just announced the iPhone Air, equipping it with a version of the A19 Pro, which is its best-performing chipset. That puts the ultra slim device right against the Galaxy S25 Edge, and now we have the first opportunity to see which one is faster.
Unfortunately, the answer may turn out to be a little more complicated than fans of either brand would like. On the bright side, you can say either is faster, as long as you’re okay with a bit of cherry picking.
We don’t have a clear winner between the iPhone Air and the Galaxy S25 Edge
The first benchmarks for the iPhone Air have started showing up on Geekbench, revealing that Apple has kept its promise to provide top-tier performance for the ultra-slim device. The single-core score of the iPhone Air ranges from 3,206 to over 3,700 points, and the multi-core score is between 8,546 and 9,737 points in different runs.
Comparing that to the results of the Galaxy S25 Edge makes for an interesting journey. Samsung’s ultra-slim phone has been available for months, so there is more data on Geekbench’s database. However, the single-core scores from the last few days range from 1,579 to 3,205, and the multi-core scores go as low as 6,564 and as high as 10,102.
Keep in mind that many people own a Galaxy S25 Edge and are running tests in all sorts of conditions. Once the iPhone Air reaches its first owners, it is likely to see a similarly wide range of scores. Even with that in mind, the S25 Edge outperforms the iPhone Air in its best multi-core tests and lags in the single-core tests. That doesn’t tell the full story, though.
Which phone do you want to appear faster?
If we compare the average scores of all available iPhone Air tests and the averages of all Galaxy S25 Edge since September 9, Apple is clearly doing better. In fact, the difference between the average scores looks jarring. Before Samsung fans get mad, I need to clarify that with a bit of cherry picking, we can make either of the devices look superior. And that’s the main issue with such comparisons – they’re rarely representative of how the devices perform in real life.Looking at the scores, the only thing I can safely say is that both phones are fast. I don’t think any of them would stumble with any task. What’s left to see is how the iPhone Air holds up under sustained load, which is probably more important than the peak performance.

'The models are really devious': Sam Altman's hardware chief says OpenAI wants kill switches built into hardware in case things go wrong

ChatGPT maker wants to be able to detect early signs of AI bad behavior
OpenAI’s hardware chief warns future AI models need real-time hardware kill switches
Richard Ho highlights networking, memory, and power challenges in scaling infrastructure
He calls for benchmarks, observability, and cross-industry partnerships to address reliability and trust
A senior OpenAI executive has warned that future AI infrastructure will require hardware-level safety features, including kill switches.
Richard Ho, head of hardware at the company, made the remarks during his keynote at the AI Infra Summit in Santa Clara.
“It has to be built into the hardware,” Ho said. “Today a lot of safety work is in the software. It assumes that your hardware is secure. It assumes that your hardware will do the right thing. It assumes that you can pull the plug on the hardware. I am not saying that we can’t pull the plug on that hardware, but I am telling you that these things are devious, the models are really devious, and so as a hardware guy, I want to make sure of that.”Silicon-level safety measures
Ho argued that the growth of generative AI is forcing a rethink of system architecture and described how future agents will be long-lived, interacting in the background even when a user is not actively engaged.
This shift requires memory-rich, low-latency infrastructure to manage continuous sessions and communication across multiple agents.
Networking, Ho said, is becoming a bottleneck. “We’re going to have to have real-time tools in these – meaning that these agents communicate with each other. Some of them might be looking at a tool, some might be doing a website search. Others are thinking, and others need to talk to each other.”
Ho outlined several hardware challenges that must be addressed, including limits on high-bandwidth memory, the need for 2.5D and 3D chip integration, advances in optics, and extreme power requirements that could reach 1 megawatt per rack.
The safety measures OpenAI put forward include real-time kill switches built into AI clusters, telemetry to detect signs of abnormal behavior, and secure execution paths in CPUs and accelerators.
Ho wrapped things up by saying, “We don’t have good benchmarks for agent-aware architectures and hardware, and I think it is important to know about latency walls and latency tails, what is the efficiency and power and things like that. We need to have good observability as a hardware feature, not just as a debug tool, but built in and constantly monitoring our hardware.“
„Networking is a real important thing, and as we head towards optical, it is unclear that the reliability of the network is there today. We need to get there with enough testing of these optical testbeds and these other communication testbeds that show that we actually have the reliability.”

Nintendo's Virtual Boy add-on will cost 100 dollar

0

Fourteen classic titles, including Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, Wario Land and V Tetris, are on the way—but you’ll need a brand-new accessory to play them, and it’s not exactly cheap.
Few would have guessed that Nintendo would breathe new life into the failed Virtual Boy, but that’s exactly what was confirmed during today’s Direct. The company announced that a total of 14 games will launch for the system, including Mario’s Tennis, Galactic Pinball, Wario Land and V Tetris, among others.
Less exciting, however, is the fact that—according to Nintendo—you won’t be able to play these games without the new dedicated Virtual Boy accessory, which comes in two forms: one plastic and one cardboard. We now also know the price. In the U.S. market the accessory will cost $100 for the plastic version or $25 if you settle for the cardboard model.
Not exactly cheap, and it almost makes you wonder—half jokingly—whether Nintendo is trying to recoup the old losses from 1995. After all, the Virtual Boy became one of Nintendo’s biggest commercial failures ever. Still, it’s fun to see the console back in the spotlight, even if requiring a pricey plastic add-on for the full experience is something worth questioning.
