President Trump signs order rebranding Pentagon as the Department of War

0

The president said the switch to the Department of Defense title after the Second World War was a „woke“ move.
President Trump has signed an executive order rebranding the US Department of Defense as the Department of War.
He called the original name „woke“ and said the new title sent „a message of victory“ and „a message of strength“.
It can only be used as a secondary title unless Congress approves the change – but the department’s website has already switched to war.gov – as have its social media accounts.
The door of Pete Hegsesth’s office has also been adorned with a fresh „Secretary of War“ sign.
Mr Hegseth said the move wasn’t „politically correct“ but that it showed „we’re going to go on offence“.
„We’re going to raise up warriors, not just defenders“, he added.
President Trump signed the executive order in the White House’s Oval Office on Friday.
„We won the First World War. We won the Second World War. We won everything before that and in between“, he said.
„And then we decided to go woke and we changed the name to Department of Defense. So we’re going Department of War.“
The president denied the rebrand ran contrary to his peacemaking efforts – which he claims have already „ended seven wars“.
„I think I’ve gotten peace because of the fact that we’re strong“, he told reporters.
The official executive order states that the name „demonstrates our ability and willingness to fight and win wars on behalf of our Nation at a moment’s notice, not just to defend“.
It also commands Mr Hegseth to pursue legislation within 60 days to make the change permanent.
The Department of Defense – often referred to colloquially as the Pentagon due to the shape of its Washington HQ – was called the War Department from 1789 until 1949.
Historians say the name was changed to show the US was focused on preventing conflict following the Second World War.
President Trump’s reversion to the previous more combative title could end up costing tens of millions, with letterheads and building signs in the US and at military bases around the world potentially needing a refresh.
Joe Biden’s effort to rename nine army bases honouring the Confederacy and Confederate leaders, set to cost $39m (£29m), was reversed by Mr Hegseth earlier this year.
Mr Trump’s other federal renaming orders include controversially labelling the Gulf of Mexico the „Gulf Of America“ and reverting North America’s tallest mountain, Denali in Alaska, to its former name of Mount McKinley.
The Mexican government and Alaska’s Republican senators both rejected the changes.

Reg hack attends job interview hosted by AI avatar, struggles to exit uncanny valley

0

If an employer asks you do to this, demand a trial run so you can learn the rules of this strange new world
A startup called Job Bolt has created AI avatars that conduct job interviews. The Register couldn’t help but give it a try and can report that it’s an unnerving experience.
Job Bolt’s pitch is that resumes and CVs are full of fibs that existing HR systems can’t detect, so HR people can save time by screening candidates with AI interviews that allow employers to write a set of questions for a human-like avatar to ask during a session that feels a lot like a one-to-one Zoom call.
Once the interview ends, Job Bolt uses AI to summarize the candidate’s responses so human HR folks can decide who gets a meeting with a real person.
Here’s a video of a typical AI-hosted interview. It glitches a bit because we excised some gratuitous logo placement.
So I could experience an AI interview for myself, Job Bolt created the role of editor at a fictional local newspaper, The Riverton Chronicle, and prepared a set of questions about how I find news, work with teams of reporters, and engage audiences.
I found the experience disconcerting, mainly because the avatar’s non-verbal behavior is twitchy, repetitive, and comes from way down deep in the uncanny valley – the place where not-real-enough simulations come off as inhuman and creepy attempts at authenticity.
In the video above, the avatar digests an answer for six seconds without responding. During the interview I took, it processed things a little quicker but its responses were banal. Most opened by referring to my previous answer by saying „Thank you for sharing“ or referred to an answer by opening „It sounds like…“ before offering a decent summary of a previous answer and trying to bridge to the next question.
The result just didn’t feel in any way conversational because the avatar doesn’t offer a real-time reaction to answers. It can’t nod, raise an eyebrow, or make any other gesture or sound that indicates active listening or gives a clue about how it’s receiving an interviewee’s words. So I found myself groping for anything to guide my responses.
The results felt like my worst self, an uncertain and inarticulate mess no recruiter would consider a viable candidate.
Job Bolt is not the only startup using AI to „improve“ the recruitment process. Earlier this year, we met Megan the AI recruiting agent. Others are doubtless exploring the field and, because it’s 2025, some HR managers will adopt these AIs.
If you find yourself asked to interview with an AI, I advise requesting a test run so you can experience the platform and learn how to put your best foot forward. That’s a reasonable ask given that this sort of thing is new and strange. If an organization won’t let you practice, it’s probably an indicator that it’s not a place you would want to work anyway.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 lineup is already drawing attention months ahead of launch, thanks to newly surfaced dummy leaks that showcase the Edge model’s striking redesign. What stands out most is the oversized camera island, which dominates nearly the entire width of the phone and pushes the overall thickness to 10.8 mm.
The main body of the Galaxy S26 Edge measures 158.4 x 75.7 x 5.5 mm, making it slightly slimmer than the Galaxy S25 Edge by 0.3 mm. That number, however, doesn’t reflect the bulk added by the camera housing, which is now one of the chunkiest we’ve seen on a flagship in recent years.

Alongside the design changes, the leak confirms that the S26 Edge will feature built-in magnets to support the Qi2 wireless charging standard. The placement of those magnets, though, may complicate accessory makers’ efforts to design magnetic snap-on add-ons, given how much real estate the camera island now occupies.
The front of the device will once again be anchored by a 6.7-inch display, with bezels expected to remain close to what we saw on the S25 Edge. The company has reportedly managed to increase battery capacity, bumping it from 3,900 mAh on the current Edge to 4,200 mAh in the upcoming model.

While not a massive leap, the gain could explain the handset’s bulkier profile. Samsung has yet to confirm whether this cell uses new Si/C chemistry, which could have offered a more significant improvement.
The Galaxy S26 Edge, with its mix of sleeker dimensions and a beefed-up camera housing, looks set to stir debate around design trade-offs when it officially arrives.
