Joe Biden's retaliation against Iran—three possible outcomes

0

The U.S. is weighing up its response to the strike on an American base in Jordan that killed three servicemen.
President Joe Biden vowed a response at a time „of our choosing“ as he faces a difficult balancing act in how to react to the drone attack that killed three American soldiers.
National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby said „we are not looking for a war with Iran“ but the U.S. blames Tehran for the actions of its allies in Sunday’s strike on the Tower 22 installation in northeast Jordan which also injured dozens of personnel.
The U.S. failing to act decisively risks sending a message of weakness that could lead to more attacks. But acting too forcefully could trigger escalation from Iran and its allies amid high regional tensions due to Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza and Houthis in Yemen attacking Red Sea shipping.
Retaliation will be more comprehensive than the one-off strikes the U.S. has carried out on Iranian-linked targets so far, because „what has been done has not been working,“ he added. „The ends have to change because this level of violence and global trade disruption and attacks on commercial shipping and civilians has to stop,“ he said.
There are many bases, weapons stores and training depots across Iraq and Syria belonging to Tehran-backed militias which are trained, equipped and funded by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, although not necessarily directed by them.
So far, precision-guided missile strikes on these bases have failed to deter the militias, which have launched more than 170 attacks on American bases in the region since the start of the war in Gaza after Hamas militants‘ October 7 attacks in southern Israel.
U.S. officials have said that options include striking Iranian personnel in Syria or Iraq or Iranian naval assets in the Persian Gulf, Politico reported.
„I think the Biden Administration’s primary choice will be to target Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces‘ (IRGC) facilities in Syria and Iraq,“ said Dennis Fritz, director of the Eisenhower Media Network (EMN) which emphasizes peace and diplomacy in U.S. foreign policy.
But Fritz, a retired command chief master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, said that such a move could see Iran respond directly „with attacks on American ships and bases in the Middle East that host our personnel“ and this could lead to a wider war.
Groups aligned with the Iranian-backed Axis of Resistance have carried out denial-of-service (DDoS) strikes against governments, critical infrastructure providers, and media organizations, which means a U.S. retaliation could have a cyber component, Borene said.
Among the softer measures that the U.S. might look at are more intense financial sanctions directed at Iranian regime members and their families but could also include cyber-attacks or outbound offensive cyber operations. „You don’t have to launch a warhead into Iran to disrupt Iranian military capacity,“ he said.
„The change would also be a shift toward a campaign to degrade and disrupt and ultimately perhaps destroy this network,“ he added.
Retaliatory strikes on the Houthis in Yemen and repositioning U.S. naval assets into threatening positions have so far not deterred Tehran-backed violence, spurring calls in some quarters for more direct retaliation on Iran itself.
„The only thing the Iranian regime understands is force. Until they pay a price with their infrastructure and their personnel, the attacks on U.S. troops will continue,“ the South Carolina GOP Senator Lindsey Graham said in a post on X. Wesley Clark, retired U.S. general and former NATO commander, posted on X „take out their capabilities and strike hard at the source: Iran.“
Borene said that the strike in Jordan on Sunday „opens up a spectrum of activities that thus far probably were not palatable to the American public.“
„Striking targets that will effectively degrade and deny Iran’s ability to provide further resources to the terrorist groups conducting these types of attacks may call for operations with effects inside of Iran, which carry the risk of moving toward a state of war between Iran and the U.S,“ he said.
But both Washington and Tehran have insisted they do not want to get into a full-scale war and Tehran could respond by trying to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas flow, delivering a blow to the world economy.
„Limited attacks on targets in Iran would see commensurate Iranian reprisals. So attacks on Iranian Guard facilities or air and naval bases would see return attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria,“ said EMN associate director, Matthew Hoh.
„The Iranian response to the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani by the U.S. in January 2020 is a good example. Hopefully, that is where it would end,“ he said
„However, there is the danger of it not ending and an escalating tit-for-tat cycle taking hold—insisted upon by internal U.S. and Iranian political pressures,“ he added.

Actress Shannen Doherty says she has received a „miracle“ treatment nearly 10 years into her battle with breast cancer.
Doherty, 52, revealed on her podcast, „Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty,“ that a new treatment she is undergoing appears to be working after the cancer spread to her brain.
„I’m on a new cancer infusion … after the sixth, seventh treatment, we really saw it breaking down the blood brain barrier,“ Doherty said. „So I call that a miracle? Yeah. For me that happens to be a miracle“
The „Charmed“ and „Beverly Hills, 90210“ actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, after which she underwent a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. In 2017, Doherty announced she was in remission.
Three years later, Doherty announced her breast cancer had returned and was stage 4. Last year, she revealed that the cancer had spread to her bones and her brain, and that she had undergone surgery to get a tumor removed from her brain.
The blood-brain barrier is a physical membrane that surrounds the brain and acts as a gatekeeper to determine what substances are allowed in the brain, according to StatPearls, an online library published in the National Library of Medicine.
Dr. Leah Croll, a board-certified neurologist, said that in the past, it has been difficult to find treatments that treat brain tumors because of the blood-brain barrier.
Nov. 29, 2023: Shannen Doherty says stage 4 breast cancer has spread to her bones: ‚I’m not done living‘
„That means that not every medication can cross that barrier and get into the brain, and it’s a big problem we have with treating neurologic diseases of all kinds,“ Croll told „Good Morning America.“ „Many of the chemotherapeutic agents that we have available to us actually do not cross that blood-brain barrier, which makes treating brain tumors a real challenge.“
Doherty did not say on her podcast exactly what infusion she is receiving.
In addition to the infusion, the actress said she is also undergoing radiation treatments, beams of intense energy meant to destroy tumor cells. Research shows that long-term side effects of radiation can sometimes include mood or cognitive changes, as well as memory issues.
Doherty described being scared of potential side effects of the radiation treatments she is receiving, saying, „I was petrified of, you know, is it going to change who I am?“
The severity of side effects a patient experiences from radiation varies by several factors, including the number of treatments, the dose of the radiation and a person’s overall health and age.
Croll noted also that radiation therapy continues to evolve and improve.
„Luckily, as the technologies we use for radiation treatments are getting more and more advanced, fewer and fewer people are having to deal with those long-term side effects,“ Croll said.

‘Squad’ rep and ‘defund the police’ advocate Cori Bush under federal investigation for private security spending: report

0

Federal prosecutors are mounting a criminal investigation against progressive firebrand Rep. Cori Bush, which was the impetus for an eyebrow-raising subpoena that the House Sergeant at Arms revealed Monday, according to a report.
Federal investigators are probing far-left Rep. Cori Bush for purportedly misspending money set aside for her personal security.
The investigation into Bush (D-Mo.), a vocal advocate of the “Defund the police” movement, was reported Tuesday by Punchbowl News after a subpoena was delivered to the office of the House sergeant at arms and announced on the floor of the chamber by the clerk Monday.
Bush, 47, was first elected to Congress in 2020 from a district that includes the entirety of St. Louis. Her spending came under scrutiny after she paid $60,000 in 2022 to her now-husband, Cortney Merritts, to provide “security services” for her.
At the same time, FEC records show, Bush’s campaign was paying more than $225,000 to a St. Louis-based firm called PEACE Security and $50,000 to another security guard named Nathaniel Davis.
Fox News Digital reported in February 2023 that Merritts was paid despite not holding a private security license as required by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department since 2012.
The outlet also reported that Merritts was not licensed as a security official by the District of Columbia.
Under FEC rules, campaigns can only make payments to family members for “bona fide” services.
In October, the Board of the Office of Congressional Ethics unanimously recommended that Bush be cleared following a complaint by conservative watchdog groups.
“The political attacks on my campaign are a clear example of how right-wing extremist groups will stop at nothing to malign those of us unapologetically working in service of our communities,” Bush proclaimed at the time.
Over her first two years in office, Bush dropped nearly $500,000 on private security while embracing the “Defund” movement.
“I’m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life and I have too much work to do,” Bush told CBS News in August 2021. “So, if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend … 10 more dollars on it, you know what? I get to be here to do the work.”
“So, suck it up, and defunding the police has to happen,” she added. “We need to defund the police and put that money into social safety nets because we’re trying to save lives.”
Bush is vying for a third term later this year, but faces a spirited challenge from St. Louis County prosecutor Wesley Bell.
The Justice Department declined to comment Tuesday, while a spokesperson for Bush did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The bloc had been debating directing the income generated by the reserves to Ukraine for more than a year
EU member states have reached an agreement that is expected to allow Brussels to transfer the income generated by Russia’s frozen central bank reserves to Kiev, according to the Belgian presidency of the EU Council.
„EU Ambassadors just agreed in principle on a proposal on the use of windfall profits related to immobilised assets to support Ukraine’s reconstruction,“ the country’s representatives announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
The Financial Times, meanwhile, has reported that EU envoys had approved a plan aiming to set aside the billions of euros in profits generated by the frozen assets of Russia’s central bank. Some €191 billion ($206 billion) out of €260 billion ($291 billion) of Russia’s immobilized reserves are currently held by Belgium’s Euroclear, a central security depository, generating billions as securities reach maturity and are reinvested.
According to the draft seen by the FT, profits generated by Euroclear will be booked separately with no dividends to be paid to shareholders until members of the bloc unanimously opt to set up a „financial contribution to the [EU] budget that shall be raised on these net profits to support Ukraine.“
The proposed measures are expected to only target future profits and won’t apply retroactively.
Last week, sources close to the discussions told Bloomberg that EU foreign ministers had backed applying a windfall tax on Russia’s frozen assets. At the same time, Reuters reported that the EU was unlikely to confiscate the funds despite G7 plans to discuss the legality of doing so at a meeting in February.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that any actions related to its assets by the US and its allies would amount to „theft,“ stressing that seizure of the funds or any similar move would violate international law and undermine reserve currencies, the global financial system, and the world economy.
In April, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing a mechanism to temporarily take over foreign assets in Russia in the event that other countries seize Russian private or government property in their jurisdictions, or threaten the national, energy, or economic security of the country.

Musk says first human implanted with Neuralink chip

Elon Musk’s brain implant startup Neuralink began human testing this week after finally getting federal approval last year.
Elon Musk’s brain implant startup Neuralink began human testing this week after finally getting federal approval last year.
The billionaire announced the beginning of human trials on Monday in a post on X.
“The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well,” Mr. Musk posted. “Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.”
Mr. Musk went on to give details about the company’s first product, “Telepathy.”
He said it “enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking.”
“Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal,” he said.
The first human study is much like the ones the company conducted on monkeys. A surgical robot implants a brain-computer interface device into the part of the brain that controls movement. The “ultra-fine” threads of the device help to transmit signals through the brain.
The Food and Drug Administration gave the company the go-ahead in the fall of 2023, and the company soon received approval for human recruitment for trials in September.
Despite receiving approval, Neuralink has not been without controversy. Last year, U.S. lawmakers asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate the company after veterinary records showed that Neuralink’s animal test subjects had developed serious health complications after going through testing. The records indicate that monkeys used by Neuralink suffered brain swelling, paralysis and seizures.
