Hurricane Kiko, packing winds in excess of 110 mph, is forecast to approach the Hawaiian islands early this week, but is predicted to pass to the north, meteorologists said Sunday.
Sept. 7 Hurricane Kiko, packing winds in excess of 110 mph, is forecast to approach the Hawaiian islands early this week, but is predicted to pass to the north, meteorologists said Sunday.
„The forecast track currently for Kiko is to pass north of Hawaii“, the National Weather Service said in a public advisory on social media. „It is still too soon to determine the exact location/magnitude of potential impacts from Kiko. Interests in the island should continue to monitor Kiko’s progress.“
As of Sunday morning, the Category 3 storm was about 715 miles east of Hilo and moving to the west-northwest at about 13 mph, generating what forecasters said could be life-threatening surf in the Hawaiian islands.
Kiko had intensified to a Category 4 hurricane early last week, but was later downgraded as it weakened off the coast. Forecasters said it could degrade into a Tropical Storm by Tuesday, but will still be capable of creating heavy rain, gusty winds and dangerous surf through the first half of the week.
There are currently no watches or warnings in place, the NHC said.

New Zealand police shoot dead fugitive father after 4-year manhunt, 2 kids still missing

Tom Phillips was killed after robbing an agricultural supplies store with one of his children.
A New Zealand man who evaded authorities with his three children in remote countryside for nearly four years was shot and killed by a police officer on Monday, law enforcement said.
The December 2021 disappearance of Tom Phillips and his children – now about nine, 10 and 11 – confounded investigators for years as they scoured the densely forested area where they believed the family was hiding.
The family was not believed to have ever travelled far from the isolated North Island rural settlement of Marokopa where they lived, but credible sightings of them were rare.
Phillips had not been formally identified, New Zealand’s Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Jill Rogers told reporters in the city of Hamilton on Monday, but authorities believed he was the man killed. His relatives confirmed his death to local news outlets.
A police officer was shot in the head and critically injured during a confrontation with Phillips after he robbed an agricultural supplies store early on Monday morning, Rogers said. A child with Phillips at the time of the burglary was taken into custody.
The officer was undergoing surgery at a hospital. Further surgeries were expected.

Trump's US Open visit sparks boos and long security lines

President Donald Trump attended the U.S. Open on Sunday, drawing boos from the crowd
President Donald Trump was loudly booed at the men’s final of the U.S. Open on Sunday, where extra security caused by his visit led to lines long enough that many people missed the start of play, even after organizers delayed it.
Wearing a suit and long, red tie, Trump briefly emerged from his suite about 45 minutes before the match started and heard a mix of boos and cheers from an Arthur Ashe Stadium that was still mostly empty. No announcement proceeded his appearance, and it was brief enough that some in the crowd missed it.
Trump appeared again to more boos before the National Anthem. Standing in salute, the president was shown briefly on the arena’s big screens during the anthem, and offered a smirk that briefly made the boos louder.
When the anthem was over, the Republican pointed to a small group of supporters seated nearby, then sat on the suite’s balcony to watch the match intently. He mostly didn’t applaud, even following major points that energized the rest of the crowd as Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz bested Jannik Sinner of Italy.
Trump was shown on the big screen again after the first set ended, and elicited a roar of louder boos and some piercing whistles. He raised his left fist in salute as the noise continued in the stadium, which with a capacity of 24,000 is one of the largest in tennis.
The president later moved back inside the suite, where he was seen seated at a table with family members and appeared to be eating, but he was back in his seat shortly before match point. Cameras briefly flashed on Trump as Alcaraz celebrated, but his reaction to the conclusion was as muted as it had been throughout most of the match. This time, there was little crowd reaction, too.
Organizers pushed the start of the match back half an hour to give people more time to pass through enhanced screening checkpoints reminiscent of security at airports. Still, thousands of increasingly frustrated fans remained in line outside as the match got underway. Many seats, especially those in upper rows, stayed empty for nearly an hour.
The Secret Service issued a statement saying that protecting Trump “required a comprehensive effort” and noting that it “may have contributed to delays for attendees.”
“We sincerely thank every fan for their patience and understanding,” it said.
Trump attended the final as a guest of Rolex, despite imposing steep tariffs on the Swiss watchmaker’s home country. The U.S. Tennis Association also tried to limit negative reaction to Trump’s attendance being shown on ABC’s national telecast, saying in a statement before play began: „We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions.”
The reactions to Trump didn’t ultimately constitute big disruptions, though.
Going to the U.S. Open was the latest example of Trump having built the bulk of his second term’s domestic travel around attending major sports events rather than hitting the road to make policy announcements or address the kind of large rallies he so relished as a candidate.
Since returning to the White House in January and prior to Sunday’s U.S Open swing, Trump has gone to the Super Bowl in New Orleans and the Daytona 500, as well as UFC fights in Miami and Newark, New Jersey, the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia and the FIFA Club World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Some of those crowds cheered him, but people booed him at other events.
The president accepted Rolex’s invitation despite his administration imposing a whopping 39% tariff on Swiss products. That’s more than 2 1/2 times higher than levies on European Union goods exported to the U.S. and nearly four times higher than on British exports to the U.S.
The White House declined to comment on Trump accepting a corporate client’s invitation at the tournament, but the president has had few qualms about blurring lines between political and foreign policy decisions and efforts to boost the profits of his family business. He’s tirelessly promoted his cryptocurrency interests and luxury golf properties, and even announced that the U.S. will host the Group of 20 summit in December 2026 at his Doral golf resort in Florida.
No large street protests against Trump could be seen from the tournament’s main stadium on Sunday. But attendees also steered clear of wearing any of the the Republican’s signature “Make America Great Again” caps.
A 58-year-old tennis fan originally from Turin, Italy, came from her home in the Boston area to watch the final and said that when she bought a U.S. Open cap, she went with a fuchsia-hued one so it wouldn’t be mistaken for the signature darker color of MAGA hats.
“I was careful not to get the red one,” said the fan, who declined to give her name because of her employer’s rules about being publicly quoted.
Among those attending with Trump were White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff. Trump spent various portions of the match engaged in conversation with many of those around him.
Elsewhere in the crowd were a slew of celebrities — some of whom publicly backed then-Vice President Kamala Harris during last year’s election. Among them were Pink, Bruce Springsteen and Shonda Rhimes. In pre-match interviews shown on large stadium screens with the likes of Martha Stewart and Jon Hamm, the questions asked stuck to tennis and pop culture — not Trump and politics.
The president nonetheless was excited enough about his trip to tell reporters on Air Force One during the flight to New York when the plane flew over Ashe stadium — though the covered roof kept those inside from reacting.
Trump was once a U.S. Open mainstay, but hadn’t attended since he was booed at a quarterfinals match in September 2015, months after launching his first presidential campaign.
The Trump Organization once controlled its own U.S. Open suite, which was adjacent to the stadium’s television broadcasting booth, but suspended it in 2017, during the first year of Trump’s first term. The family business is now being run by Trump’s sons with their father back in the White House.
Trump was born in Queens, home of the U.S. Open, and for decades was a New York-area real estate mogul and, later, a reality TV star. Attending the tournament before he was a politician, he usually sat in his company’s suite’s balcony during night matches and was frequently shown on the arena’s video screens.

All iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro Battery Capacities Allegedly Leaked

Just ahead of Apple unveiling the iPhone 17 series on Tuesday, it appears that battery capacities for the devices have surfaced in a Chinese.
Just ahead of Apple unveiling the iPhone 17 series on Tuesday, it appears that battery capacities for the devices have surfaced in a Chinese regulatory database.
The table below lists the alleged battery capacities for each model, which were shared in a post on X today by an account known as ShrimpApplePro.
The database suggests that the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be available with and without a physical SIM card slot, depending on the country of sale. For the base model iPhone 17, however, it appears that only one battery capacity for that device has been discovered in the database so far.
It was previously rumored that Apple plans to eliminate the SIM card tray from iPhones in more countries beyond the U.S. this year, but it will likely continue to exist in some countries, due to limited eSIM availability or other reasons. For example, some iPhone 17 models might still have a SIM card slot in China, due to local regulations.
Notably, the iPhone 17 Air is the model that is most expected to lack a physical SIM card slot in many countries, due to its ultra-thin design with limited internal space.
Given the SIM card tray takes up some space inside an iPhone, the models with such a tray appear to have slightly lower battery capacities than eSIM-only variants.
* Unclear if this capacity is for a model with or without a SIM card tray.
MacRumors has access to the regulatory database shown in the screenshot, but it has yet to independently confirm these listings.
A few takeaways based on these alleged capacities:
As rumored, the iPhone 17 Pro Max would become the first iPhone model to cross the 5,000 mAh battery capacity mark. With a 5,088 mAh battery, the device would have a nearly 8% larger battery compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Another rumor that appears to be accurate is the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air having around a 3,000 mAh battery capacity, which is on the lower side for an iPhone. However, the device will benefit from Apple’s power-efficient C1 modem for cellular connectivity, and Apple reportedly plans to release an iPhone 17 Air battery case.
Given that Apple is now required to show an energy label on its iPhone product pages in the EU, official battery capacities might be published later this week.

Latest Horror Win: The Conjuring: Last Rites

It’s the year for horror, as demonstrated this time by The Conjuring: Last Rites. The film’s opening weekend tipped the genre over $1 billion in earnings for the year’s domestic box office. The horror sequel raked in $83 million domestically in 3,802 theaters, making it the third-highest domestic opening for a horror movie, behind It and It: Chapter Two. It’s now the largest horror opening internationally, with $104 million in earnings outside of North American theaters, the AP reports. The film also broke records for the Conjuring universe, securing the biggest opening weekend in the franchise.

The horror genre last crossed the $1 billion mark in 2023. Meeting that threshold this early in the year is unprecedented, said Paul Dergarabedian of the data firm Comscore. Upcoming horror films like Black Phone 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 are likely to boost that number, an analyst said. Disney’s filmed version of Hamilton landed in second place with $10 million domestically. The rest of the top spots were dominated by holdover titles.

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:

Mariah Carey’s sparkling VMAs 2025 performance outfit included more than $10M in diamonds

0

Mariah Carey accepted the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs 2025 after performing a medley of hits while wearing a glittering gold bodysuit and boots, along with $10 million worth of diamonds.
Mariah Carey is still bringing the glitter.
While she skipped the VMAs 2025 red carpet, the music icon took the stage to perform a medley of her greatest hits and accept the musical awards show’s biggest honor of the evening, the Video Vanguard Award.
While she initially took the stage in a champagne-colored silk bathrobe, she soon whipped it off to reveal a corseted gold crystal-covered bodysuit paired with matching sparkling boots.
But the real star of the show was Carey’s jewelry.
The five-time Grammy winner wore a 204.38-carat “Rosée Éternelle” diamond necklace and matching chandelier earrings from Levuma valued at a whopping $10 million, as the brand shared with Page Six Style in a press release.
And that’s not all; Carey also wore several diamond bracelets during her performance, including a 72.15-carat cuff from Etho Maria.
“I just have one question, what in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?” she quipped, while accepting the coveted award, presented by Ariana Grande.
Though she famously does not believe in birthdays and, in fact, refers to her aging as an “anniversary” — (or admittedly lives in denial) Carey is the oldest recipient of the Video Vanguard Award to date at age 56.
She follows in the footsteps of last year’s Video Vanguard Award recipient, Katy Perry, as well as past lifetime achievement winners including Shakira, Beyoncé, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and others.
Coincidentally, she presented the very same Vanguard Award to LL Cool J in 1997 — and the rapper is hosting this year’s show, which airs on CBS and Paramount+.
Shockingly, this will be the superstar’s very first Moon Person; she has never won one of the eight awards she’s been nominated for at the MTV show despite her decades-long career. Tonight, she’s up for her ninth: best R&B video for her song, “Type Dangerous.”
Here’s hoping Mimi’s heading home with her hands full.

Aaron Rodgers wins Steelers debut, shows Jets 'I still can' play

0

Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes Sunday to help the Steelers win their opener and show the Jets that he ’still can‘ play.
— Though he spent the week downplaying the significance of opening the regular season at MetLife Stadium against the New York Jets, quarterback Aaron Rodgers acknowledged Sunday the added satisfaction of starting out his Pittsburgh Steelers tenure with a 34-32 win over the team that let him go.
„There were probably people in the organization that didn’t think I could play anymore“, Rodgers, 41, said after the game. „So, it was nice to remind those people that I still can.“
That reminder came in the form of four passing touchdowns and 244 yards as he completed 22 of 30 attempts, including 4 of 5 for 62 yards and a touchdown pass to wide receiver Ben Skowronek on the Steelers‘ first drive.
Earlier this year, Rodgers criticized the Jets organization, and specifically new head coach Aaron Glenn, for how they handled his dismissal. Glenn, Rodgers said on „The Pat McAfee Show“ in April, told Rodgers the team was going in a different direction at quarterback „20 seconds in“ to their in-person meeting in New Jersey, which Rodgers flew cross-country for on his „own dime.“ Asked specifically after Sunday’s win if there was added significance to beating Glenn, Rodgers demurred.
„I was happy to beat everybody associated with the Jets“, he said.
Rodgers, who has spoken frequently throughout his career about being motivated by slights and doubters, went to great lengths throughout the week of prep to avoid publicly expressing any negativity toward the Jets after his tumultuous two-year stint. Even after the game, he said the win was special regardless of the opponent.
„I love beating everybody, so it doesn’t matter who it is“, Rodgers said. „I really only played 18 games here, so I was actually talking to Breece [Hall] about that. He said, ‚How’s it feel?‘ I said, ‚Honestly, I was here for two years, but it doesn’t come close to how it’s going to feel playing Green Bay because that was 18 years in my career.‘ So it was nice to win, especially hearing some of the catcalls out there and the boo birds. I’m not sensitive about that. I expected that. I kind of liked that.“
Coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t surprised by Rodgers‘ indifference.
„He doesn’t care“, Tomlin said. „He’s been doing this too long. It was Week 1. It was a lot to be excited about. We got the victory. It’s on to the next one.“
While the crowd gave Rodgers a mostly hostile welcome, that wasn’t the case for many members of the Jets organization.
After disembarking from Steelers‘ bus at the visiting team entrance just before 10 a.m., Rodgers embraced a stadium security worker after going through the metal detector. A few steps later, he embraced another familiar face in Karan Patel. Once a Jets equipment staffer and now a visiting locker room attendant, Patel regularly threw with Rodgers during his Achilles rehab in 2023. Once he made his way to the turf, Rodgers went through a familiar routine as he threw with Patel for several minutes before pausing to catch up on his life.
„I love KP“, Rodgers said. „Wish the organization would hire him back. He is a character guy, culture guy, great young guy. That was fun to see him. He said, ‚I’m working on the visitor side today.‘ I said, ‚Well let’s play a little catch.'“
The reunions didn’t stop there. A steady stream of Jets staffers and players crossed the 50-yard line to greet Rodgers during the warmup period, including quarterback Tyrod Taylor, defensive lineman Quinnen Williams and running back Breece Hall. And the likes of cornerback Sauce Gardner and Quincy Williams stopped by to wish him well after the game, too.
„I still have a lot of people that I have fond feelings for, and so pregame I saw a few of the guys“, Rodgers said. „There’s so many guys that I really enjoy there. . So it’s nice to see those guys.“
While Rodgers‘ feelings about the Jets organization in its totality are complicated, his feelings about getting a win are not. And Sunday’s win was one that came down to the wire with a game-winning, franchise record-setting 60-yard field goal by Chris Boswell less than a minute remaining and a fourth-down stop by defensive back Jalen Ramsey.
Between the opening-drive touchdown, one that marked the Steelers‘ first opening-drive touchdown in Week 1 since 2008 against the Houston Texans, and the game-sealing Ramsey tackle, Rodgers threw three more touchdowns with passes to Jonnu Smith, Jaylen Warren and Calvin Austin III. Rodgers‘ four total passing touchdowns made him the first player since Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2010 to throw four passing touchdowns against a former team. Rodgers, who threw four touchdowns in his final game with the Jets, is also the first player in NFL history with consecutive four passing touchdown games, each with a different franchise.
Rodgers‘ last touchdown pass of the day, an 18-yard connection with Austin, gave the Steelers a 31-26 lead early in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on the forced fumble by Kenneth Gainwell and recovery by Skowronek on kickoff coverage following Rodgers‘ 5-yard pass to Warren.
„We just wanted to play for each other, and play for 8“, Austin said, referencing Rodgers‘ jersey number. „We go out there, we have full confidence that whatever he’s saying, he’s getting us in the best position to be able to succeed.“
By any measure, Rodgers didn’t succeed with the Jets, and his success with the Steelers is still to be determined over the course of the season. But with a season-opening win in a place he once called home, Rodgers appeared to finally close that chapter of his career.
„I gave as much as I could to the [Jets], and it didn’t work out“, Rodgers said. „I didn’t have any hard feelings about it not working out. Now, I didn’t maybe appreciate the way that it went down in the end, but that’s in the past, and we’re 1-0.
„I just wanted to have fun today. I was dreaming about the opportunity to step back on the field in the offseason and wondering how it would feel and would the juices flow and would it hit my competitive spirit? There were a lot of moments that I was on the sideline, just to myself, thanking my wife and my friends for encouraging me to take time on my decision and that this would be the right decision. So happy to be a Steeler and happy things went the way they did today.“

Giants' Daboll doesn't commit to Wilson as Week 2 starter

0

Giants coach Brian Daboll was hardly definitive on his QB situation entering Week 2 following Sunday’s loss to the Commanders, one that saw Russell Wilson struggle throughout.
— New York Giants coach Brian Daboll was asked after Sunday’s 23-6 season-opening loss to the Washington Commanders if it was fair to say that quarterback Russell Wilson will be the team’s starter next week against the division rival Dallas Cowboys. His answers were hardly definitive just moments after a contest in which first-round pick Jaxson Dart served as the team’s backup ahead of veteran Jameis Winston.
Wilson went 17-of-37 passing for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the loss to the Commanders. He was especially ineffective under pressure, completing just 2-of-12 passes for 26 yards with two sacks and two scrambles.
„We’re going to get home and look at our game“, Daboll said when asked if he would consider starting Dart next week.
Nothing the Giants coach said afterward seemed to offer any significant clarity either.
„Yeah, we’re just right here after the game“, Daboll said. „I’ve got confidence . we have to do better around overall — coaches, players, [all] around everybody. So we’ll get focused and ready to go on to Dallas.“
When it was mentioned that answer could be construed as a non-answer, Daboll didn’t exactly say that Wilson would start against the Cowboys. He was equally noncommittal.
„We’re talking about after every game . I’ve got confidence in Russ“, he said. „We’ll go back, evaluate the tape. This game isn’t on Russell Wilson. It’s not on Russell Wilson. Let me make that clear. I have confidence in Russ. We have to do a better job all the way around.“
New York managed just 231 yards of total offense. They averaged 3.2 yards per rush. They stumbled twice in the red zone.
Wilson said he believes that is where things went wrong.
„I think the game was simple in the sense that we didn’t convert in the red zone“, he said.
The Giants signed Wilson this offseason to a one-year deal to be the team’s starting quarterback. For how long is now the question after Dart had a strong summer and preseason and New York stumbled in the opener.
Daboll chose Dart over Winston to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback in the season opener. Winston was the No. 3 emergency quarterback.
„I thought he earned it“, Daboll said of his young quarterback. „Thought Jaxson earned it.“
Neither Dart nor Winston were made available to speak on the decision after the loss. The Giants did have a package planned for Dart, although they didn’t use it in the contest. Wilson played all 62 offensive plays.
By having Dart just one play from entering the game only increases the eyeballs on Wilson’s play. The 10-time Pro Bowler says it doesn’t provide any extra pressure.
„No, I just focus on what we can control. I thought we competed our butts off [Sunday]“, Wilson said. „That was a physical game. I thought we left it all on the field. We gave it our all physically. You stand tall in the midst of that game. Battling through it, and trying to find a way to win. Like I said, they stopped us in the red zone. I think that was the name of this game. We had, I think, eight or nine possessions; two of them were down in the red zone. We didn’t capitalize on those, so that’s what we got to do.“
Unfortunately for the Giants, it looked like an extension of the previous two seasons when the offense struggled mightily to score points. They finished 30th and 31st in points per game the past two years.
There was optimism throughout the spring and summer that Wilson and his leadership would lead to a more efficient and effective offense. That moving on from Daniel Jones and inserting a player with the experience and pedigree of Wilson (a 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback and a Super Bowl winner) would help get the most out of this group.
Aside from Wilson and the quarterback position, the Giants returned 10 of 11 starters from last year’s offense.
But at least for one week, it didn’t look much different.
„I’d say with everybody offensively, it’s everyone included, we all have to be better, every coach, every player. We had six points there“, Daboll said. „Just not good enough. So we have to do better there.“

Trump receives mix of applause, boos during US Open appearance

0

President Donald Trump didn’t receive all applause, nor did he receive all boos during his appearance at the U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon.
President Donald Trump drew a mix of cheers and boos from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York ahead of the U.S. Open men’s singles final on Sunday afternoon.
Trump showed up less than an hour before the match between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz began. He stepped onto the balcony of the Rolex corporate suite he was situated in and waved the crowd. Tennis fans cheered for the president and Trump mouthed, „Thank you.“
The president saluted as the national anthem played in the stadium. He received a mix of cheers and boos from the crowd as the cameras panned toward him. He reportedly received boos again in the middle of the match.
Trump critics were quick to pile on the president, only mentioning the boos from the crowd. Bounces reporter Ben Rothenberg noted that the president received some claps as well.
It’s Trump’s first visit to the Grand Slam tennis tournament since before he got into the White House. He was seen at the event in September 2015 – months after he announced his run for president the first time. And it’s a pretty good time to be a fan of the sport.
Sinner and Alcaraz have cemented themselves as the two top stars in the post-Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal eras. Novak Djokovic has proved that he could still win Grand Slam titles as well but he hasn’t won since the 2023 U.S. Open. He reached the semifinals in each Grand Slam tournament this season.
While U.S. Open broadcasters were reportedly ordered to avoid showing disruptions in the crowd over Trump’s presence, Alcaraz welcomed the possibility of seeing Trump in the crowd.
„I think that it is a privilege for the tournaments having the president from every country just to support the tournament, to support tennis, and to support the match“, he said, via The Guardian. „For me, playing in front of him … I will try not to think about it.
„I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it, but I think attending the tennis match, it’s great for tennis to have the president at the final.“
Television networks that are set to broadcast Trump’s arrival at the event at Flushing Meadows in New York City were reportedly told to refrain from airing any boos or cheers for him.
Bounces, a tennis-focused Substack, first reported that the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) sent out the directive to broadcasters.
„With respect to Broadcast Coverage, the President will be shown on the World Feed and the Ashe Court Feed during the opening anthem ceremony“, the message reportedly read. „We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage.“
The USTA said it regularly asks its broadcasters to avoid showing disruptions off the court.
