Justice Christopher Beale will sentence the triple murderer on Monday, with the hearing to be broadcast live in a state first
Victoria’s supreme court will hand down the triple-murderer Erin Patterson’s sentence on Monday morning, with the hearing to be broadcast live in a historic first for the state.
The state’s supreme court will allow a television camera inside the courtroom to broadcast the sentencing hearing – with a 10 second delay – for the first time.
Patterson, 50, faces the prospect of spending the rest of her life in prison. Justice Christopher Beale will deliver her sentence from 9.30am in a hearing expected to last about 30 minutes.
In July, after an 11-week trial, a jury found Patterson guilty of murdering Don and Gail Patterson, the parents of her estranged husband, Simon, and his aunt, Heather Wilkinson. The jury also convicted Patterson of attempting to murder Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson.
Patterson hosted the guests at a lunch in July 2023, deliberately feeding them beef wellingtons laced with death cap mushrooms.
Delivering an emotional victim impact statement in a pre-sentencing hearing last month, Wilkinson, a pastor, offered Patterson forgiveness for trying to murder him.
“Now I am no longer Erin Patterson’s victim, and she has become the victim of my kindness,” he said.
But Wilkinson said he was “compelled to seek justice” for the three murder victims. He said he bore Patterson no ill will and his prayer for her was that she would use her time in custody to reform.
Simon Patterson said his estranged wife’s crimes had robbed their two children, a son born in 2009 and a daughter born in 2014, of “the kind of relationship with their mother that every child yearns for”.
The prosecution and defence agreed Patterson should receive a life sentence for her crimes, which Beale said were “horrendous”. Prosecutors called for no prospect of parole for Patterson, while the defence said she should be given a chance to be released.
Patterson’s defence barrister, Colin Mandy SC, said her notoriety meant she was in onerous conditions – spending 22 hours locked in her cell – which should be considered by Beale. He said his client’s isolation made the “burden of imprisonment” much greater for her than other prisoners.
Jane Warren, for the prosecution, agreed that Beale could consider these conditions.
Beale said the fact that Patterson had spent most of her days isolated in her cell for at least 14 months since her arrest in November 2023 “doesn’t sound very humane”.
While it is typically illegal for media outlets to record inside a courtroom, the court has granted permission for a television camera to film Beale handing down his sentencing remarks. The footage, which media outlets can re-broadcast, will go live with a 10-second delay.
Patterson will have until 6 October to lodge an appeal against her conviction, sentence or both.
She pleaded not guilty to all charges and claimed the deaths were a tragic accident.
In Victoria, the maximum penalty for murder is life imprisonment without parole.
The standard sentence is 25 years’ imprisonment, according to a guide for judicial officers produced by the Sentencing Advisory Council of Victoria. Standard sentences apply to a range of serious offences and must be considered as a guidepost by the court when making a sentencing decision.
The last triple-murderer to be sentenced in Victoria was Robert Farquharson, who was convicted of murdering his children in 2007 and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years.

Jets coach Aaron Glenn admits he'll have nerves in his debut

0

Glenn was nervous when he started his playing career in New York, and he said those same feelings will be there Sunday.
— A look at what’s happening around the New York Jets:
1. Deja debut: Aaron Glenn makes his head coaching debut Sunday against the 12th-winningest coach in NFL history: Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s a tough way to start, but no tougher than his first game as a player in 1994.
Against the Buffalo Bills in the old Giants Stadium, Glenn faced a couple of future Hall of Famers and was tested immediately. On the Bills‘ first play from scrimmage, Glenn found himself lined up against Andre Reed. Jim Kelly saw it and attacked the Jets‘ rookie cornerback, looking for his favorite receiver.
The pass was incomplete — a positive harbinger for Glenn. He held his own that day, just as he did the next two weeks against John Elway and Dan Marino — a Murderers‘ Row of quarterbacks. As then-Jets coach Pete Carroll said at the outset of the gauntlet, „[Glenn] will find out what the Hall of Fame is all about.“
„I was nervous — I know I was — and I’m sure I’ll be nervous for this one“, Glenn said, comparing his 1994 debut with Sunday’s opener at MetLife Stadium. „And that’s just who I am. I’ll always have that within my body, and I can feel it.
„But at some point, man, it goes away really, really, really quick, and I get dialed into what I have to do as a coach, and as I did as a player.“
In terms of daunting challenges, this is on par with having to face Kelly-Elway-Marino. Glenn takes over a franchise that hasn’t fielded a winner in nine straight seasons, and his first three games are against 2024 playoff teams: Steelers, Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
On Sunday, Glenn will be opposed by a certain future Hall of Fame quarterback who would absolutely love to ruin the coach’s homecoming party even though he downplayed it this past week. Aaron Rodgers, who never forgets a slight, believes he was mistreated by Glenn on the way out the door seven months ago — an unceremonious end to his two-year run with the Jets.
All of which puts Glenn in the crosshairs. Tough opener. Tough job, period.
„It’s extremely, extremely challenging“, former Jets linebacker Jason Glenn, Aaron’s younger brother, said on the „Flight Deck“ podcast. „It’s New York, right?“
Jason Glenn, who finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings, said his brother reminds him of his Vikings defensive coordinator in 2006. That coach landed his first head coaching job the following year. Glenn knew his old DC would be a success in his new city because „you can just tell how some guys fit organizations.“
As for his big brother, „Aaron fits New York.“
By the way, Jason Glenn’s DC in Minnesota? It was Tomlin, hired by Pittsburgh in 2007.
2. Reasons for hope: Never say never in the NFL, right?
For 35 straight seasons, at least four teams have made the playoffs that weren’t in the previous postseason. In 26 of the last 29 seasons, at least one team has qualified for the playoffs after finishing in last or tied for last place. The Los Angeles Chargers, Vikings and Washington Commanders did it last year.
Early in the offseason, Glenn referred to the Jets as a „win-now“ team. This past week, he backed off, opting for a nebulous response when asked how he’d define a successful season.
„I want to be a team to where the fans will look and say we’re proud of that team“, Glenn said. „And if they say that, I’ll be happy. I’ll be happy because, within that, I know that wins will come.“
3. AVT’s uncertain future: Right tackle Armand Membou will be the first Jets rookie offensive lineman to make an opening-day start since Alijah Vera-Tucker in 2021. The plan was to have them side-by-side for 2025 and beyond, but Vera-Tucker’s season-ending triceps tear is likely to have far-reaching implications.
Prior to the injury, the Jets were interested in extending Vera-Tucker’s contract, which expires after this season. That appears unlikely now. This was his third major surgery in four years, raising serious questions about his durability. He probably will have to take a one-year, prove-it deal, stay healthy in 2026 and hope to make a free-agent score in 2027.
Whether it’s with the Jets remains to be seen.

4. Rotten luck: The Jets can’t catch a break with their offensive line. Since 2020, they’ve invested four first-round picks on the line (tied with the New Orleans Saints for the league high), hoping to turn it into a powerhouse unit. That hasn’t happened; it remains a work in progress due, in part, to injuries.
The first two picks spent more time in rehab than on the field. Mekhi Becton missed 36 out of 67 games. Vera-Tucker will have missed 42 out of 85 games by season’s end. Neither player had an injury history in college, though Becton battled a weight problem.
Sometimes you just get unlucky.
5. Wants to be captain: Cornerback Sauce Gardner sounded a little bummed out that he wasn’t voted a captain by his teammates. It seemed like a natural progression for him, especially with wide receiver Garrett Wilson getting the nod. They were drafted the same year and both received huge contract extensions before training camp.
The other captains: Justin Fields and Vera-Tucker on offense; Jamien Sherwood and Quinnen Williams on defense; Marcelino McCrary-Ball on special teams.
„I did feel a way“, Gardner said. „I’m like, ‚There’s three on offense, you might as well just do three on defense.'“
He said Wilson and Vera-Tucker finished in a tie, explaining the extra man on offense. Gardner said it won’t affect how he leads, adding, „I’m not tripping about it, but it’s something I want at some point in my career.“
6. Gang green: Are the Jets a young team? Yes and no.
As of Friday, their 53-man roster was the second youngest, behind the Green Bay Packers. That’s pretty green, yet they have just eight rookies, only two of whom are expected to play meaningful snaps: Membou and tight end Mason Taylor. Wide receiver Arian Smith could make it three, but his role is less defined.
Last year’s team, which was built to win a championship (that was the plan, anyway), opened with nine rookies.

7. Difference maker: It took 358 days from injury to return, but Jermaine Johnson is back from his ruptured Achilles. He’s a high-motor player, and the coaches expect him to galvanize the front four.
Watching the tape of Johnson’s first few practices in training camp, defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said it was like „I was hitting fast speed because of the intensity and how they were coming off the ball.“
8. Ready for a run: Barring injury, Fields probably will go down as the best running quarterback in Jets history. He averages 50 rushing yards per game. At that pace, he’d break the single-season record (453 yards, Al Dorow, 1960) in 10 games and he’d shatter the career mark (821, Richard Todd) in his 17th game.
9. Did you know? The Jets have played exactly 1,000 regular-season games in franchise history, according to Pro Football Reference. They go all the way back to 1960, when they were the New York Titans. In case you’re wondering, their record is 433-559-8 — a .437 winning percentage.
Maybe the second 1,000 will be better.
10. The last word: „What do they say? The bigger the dragon, the bigger the hero, the better the story.“ — defensive tackle Harrison Phillips on how much he’s looking forward to facing Rodgers.

Why You May Want To Avoid Progressive's Snapshot Program, According To Drivers

0

Progressive offers its Snapshot program to monitor your driving in exchange for discounts, but what do actual drivers think of it and the discounts received?
There are a number of good reasons why drivers would consider joining an insurance program such as Progressive’s Snapshot, including saving money on their insurance. However, not every driver is going to see those savings, as the program tracks nearly everything about your driving habits. For those who consider themselves safe drivers, the discounts they can receive from the Snapshot program can save them hundreds.
Unfortunately, not everyone who considers themselves a safe driver is one, and what one person may consider safe driving won’t be the same as another’s. According to Progressive, the „Snapshot program personalizes your car insurance rate based on your actual driving [.] That means you pay based on how and how much you drive instead of just traditional factors.“
The insurance company does admit that some drivers could see an increased rate due to „high-risk driving, [but] most drivers save with Snapshot.“ Progressive gives tips on how to help maximize your Snapshot discount, which includes limiting the number of hard brakes and quick accelerations when driving, avoiding driving late at night, spending less time driving, and staying off your phone while driving.
The Snapshot program can be used in two ways: the first is by installing a device in your vehicle, which is connected to your vehicle’s OBD-II port and collects data from the vehicle’s computer system. The second system is through the Progressive mobile app, which will track your driving.
In order to find the best information from Progressive Snapshot users, we looked at what customers had to say across vehicle-specific forums and larger online forums. These customers reported using the Snapshot program and gave their opinions on the device. Why should it be avoided?
There are a number of issues that have arisen since the Progressive Snapshot program began in 2011. One of the most dangerous and terrifying situations began with a Progressive customer using the OBD-II port version.
A user on Reddit posted their personal story, where their vehicle stalled in the middle of a major roadway and refused to turn back on. After the vehicle was brought to a local mechanic, the Snapshot OBD-II device was found to be the cause of the stall. The device had thrown 49 error codes at the vehicle’s computer, overwhelming the system and stalling the vehicle. Once the device was removed, the vehicle turned on and was able to be driven normally.
Another potential reason to avoid the Snapshot program, especially if you’re an EV owner or someone who uses self-driving or autonomous vehicle systems, is that the Snapshot can raise your rate if it detects quick accelerations or hard stops. Users on a Tesla Cybertruck forum claimed that, when using the full self-driving technology for a majority of their trips, the Snapshot program significantly increased their premium rate.
Drivers who work delivery jobs with their own vehicle, whether that’s people or goods, should absolutely avoid using the Snapshot program. Two of the key points Progressive takes a look at during driving are how many hours a vehicle is in use and what time of day the vehicle is being driven.Programs similar to Progressive Snapshot
Progressive is far from the only car insurance company with a Snapshot device or something similar. Beyond Progressive, other major insurance companies that offer tracking devices include State Farm (Drive Safe & Save), Travelers (IntelliDrive), USAA (SafePilot), Geico (DriveEasy), Allstate (Drivewise), Nationwide (SmartRide), American Family (KnowYourDrive), and Farmers (Signal).
However, not many car owners are even aware that their insurance company offers these tracking devices. According to a survey of more than 40,000 policyholders run by Consumer Reports, only 28% of those surveyed knew that their insurance company had a driver monitoring program. They also found that only 14% of policyholders in the survey had even used the tracking devices.
The Consumer Reports survey also looked at the average savings across multiple demographics for users of the tracking devices, as well as the maximum discounts offered by the insurance companies. For demographics, young people earned the best savings, around $145 off their average bill. For drivers who are 70 and over, the average savings was just $93.
The biggest average discount coming on the insurance company side is Nationwide and Allstate, both of which offer up to a 40% discount.

Are Insignia TVs Any Good? What Users Say About Best Buy's Budget Brand

0

Price is one of the most common points of praise from many Insignia television owners, with many also lauding the smart TVs for functionality.
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.
With prices low and onboard technology at a premium, there has, arguably, never been a better time to be in the market for a new television. While the smart TV market is rife with intriguing options from major manufacturers like Sony, LG, and Samsung, bargain shoppers are hardly hurting for options either. And among the more notable bargain television brands out there, Insignia is rapidly becoming a go-to option for many in the market, with online retailer Amazon currently offering 50-inch models for as little as $179.99.
While Insignia televisions are a prominent fixture on Amazon, it’s likely that you also saw quite a few of these TVs lining Best Buy’s shelves the last time you were there. It’s even likelier that Best Buy is among the only major retailers in which you’ve seen a television brandishing the Insignia name, as the big box retail electronics chain actually owns the brand. While Best Buy has expanded the Insignia lineup to include tablets, appliances, and electronics accessories, televisions remain its flagship electronic.
As with any budget TV brand, the question surrounding Insignia devices continues to be whether they’re actually worth the money, or if consumers are just buying a cheap TV, which has pros and cons in its own right. Ultimately, real-world users may provide the most honest insight into the quality of Insignia TVs, and according to reviews, owners are generally happy with the devices. Here’s what real users like and dislike about Insignia TVs. Users are relatively happy with their Insignia televisions
As of this writing, Best Buy’s online storefront offers 27 Insignia TVs. Only two of those devices earned a rating below 4.5 stars out of five. Those are the 75-inch Class F50 Series and the 65-inch Class F50 Series, which earned a 4.3 star rating and 4.4 star rating, respectively. The negative reviewers for the former claim they were underwhelmed with picture or sound quality, while one noted their TV stopped working after a week of use. As for the latter (based on almost 900 reviews with well over 100 being three stars or less), users claim dissatisfaction with sound, picture, and overall functionality.
Regarding the 65-inch Class F50, it may be worth noting that 644 of its reviews are five stars, with the bulk of those reviews claiming satisfaction across the board. And yes, many of the other TVs listed on Best Buy’s website boast similarly glowing reviews. Price is, understandably, one of the most common points of praise from Insignia television owners, with many also lauding the smart TVs for functionality, particularly the inclusion of Amazon’s Fire TV service on its newer models.
As per usual, reviews are more scattered on Amazon, where none of the listed Insignia TVs are rated higher than 4.5 stars, or lower than 4.2. Ultimately, the praise and complaints are about the same as those levied by Best Buy. Pros and cons aside, Insignia TVs — particularly the 55-inch model – continue to earn mentions among the better budget TV options available. How we got here
To find how real-world Insignia TV owners feel about their purchases, we analyzed both positive and negative reviews from the Best Buy website and Amazon. Looking at the negative reviews helped us present a comprehensive picture of the brand’s televisions.
