The Independent.

Truth Social.

Bravo to President Trump for seeing the truth: Ukraine can win

President Trump walked out of his meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky with a hope-filled revelation: Ukrainians can take their country back. All of it.
President Donald Trump walked out of his Tuesday meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky with a hope-filled revelation: Ukrainians can take their country back. All of it.
After his sitdown with Ukraine’s president. Trump posted on Truth Social: “I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form” and “who knows, maybe even go further than that!”
This is a game-changing 180; as recently as mid-August, the prez’s position was that peace would require Kyiv to cede at least some territory to Moscow.
His reasons for now saying Ukraine can win: Russia looks like a “paper tiger,” crippled after “fighting aimlessly for three and a half years” in a war that should have taken “less than a week to win.”
All evidence points to the Russian bear being as mangy as Trump suggests: The Kremlin’s drone incursions into Poland and Estonia’s airspace (and possibly Denmark’s, too) look like desperate scare tactics, meant to panic the West into fearing a wider war.
Meanwhile, its economy now relies almost entirely on war manufacturing and oil exports — with the latter hit hard by Kyiv’s wildly effective strikes on refineries.
Cheers the president: “Putin and Russia are in BIG Economic trouble, and this is the time for Ukraine to act.”
Amen to that, sir: Now give Kyiv what it needs to do the job.
Trump has already said Washington will keep selling our NATO partners weapons to dish out to Ukraine as they see fit; he can up the pressure for peace by ensuring Kyiv gets an influx of much-needed artillery, air-defense systems and drones and lifting all restrictions on the use of Western-supplied weapons.
And hit the “paper tiger” with another hammer — secondary sanctions against countries still buying up Russian oil, primarily China and India.
Trump has waffled on this, threatening Vladimir Putin with a 10-day deadline back in July, then this month hinging fresh US sanctions on new demands on Europeans.
And Putin’s only increased his behind-the-lines attacks on civilians, while throwing troops into the front-line buzzsaw to gain bare yards of territory — hoping that terror and some air of inevitable Russian victory will break his enemies’ will.
The longer the near-impasse goes on, the more needless deaths on both sides.
Our president needs to stick to his new, tough line: No more telegraphing to Putin that he’s willing to force Ukraine to accept the impossible.
Now is the time to be decisive: Moscow is on its back heel; an end to this war is within reach.
Ukrainians can land the final blow — and Trump can help them do it.

New One UI 8.5 leaks show iOS 26-inspired design and new AI features

Samsung’s next major Android update may have a lot in common with Liquid Glass.
Despite the controversy around the Liquid Glass redesign introduced with iOS 26, Samsung may use Apple’s design choices as an inspiration for its own operating system. We’ve already seen some of the similarities in the first images from the leaked One UI 8.5 build, but now we have even more leaks that suggest the similarities were not accidental.
New images from the leaked early build of One UI 8.5 show that the software may be heavily inspired by iOS 26. In screenshots of the My Files apps, shared by SammyGuru, we see Samsung using a floating search bar at the bottom of the screen and other elements reminiscent of Liquid Glass. The redesign also sees the return of circular icons for the different categories at the top.
Another set of images shows the Samsung Phone app, which also appears inspired by what iPhone 17 users can see on their devices. The most striking element is the new single floating pill at the bottom that unifies the three tabs of the navigation bar. Just like on iOS 26, a circle highlights the active tab.
Those elements add to the impression left by the other images we’ve seen. They had various floating elements with drop shadows and overflow gradients on the top and bottom, just like Apple’s software.
Those images show very early versions of Samsung’s stock apps, but we can safely assume that’s the general direction the company is taking with the One UI 8.5 design. That’s surprising, considering that the software will be based on Android 16, which got its own Material 3 Expressive overhaul this year.
Apple’s Liquid Glass was met with harsh criticism, and its early beta versions had various issues. By the final release of iOS 26, the design was improved, but people still wanted to return to iOS 18 and the old design. Nothing similar has happened with Google’s Material 3 Expressive.
As we said in June, everyone will inevitably copy Liquid Glass. Apple is still the most influential smartphone company in the world, and probably the most copied one. While seeing Samsung pioneering the Liquid Glass knockoffs wasn’t on my bingo card for this year, it’s not such a shock. Well, those screenshots aren’t total Liquid Glass rip-offs either.

MLB will allow players to challenge balls and strikes starting in 2026

0

With a tap of their head, players will be able to trigger an automated review when they disagree with an umpire’s call. In spring training this year, just over half of challenges were successful.
Starting in the 2026 season, Major League Baseball players will be able to challenge called balls and strikes in regular and postseason games for the first time.
The widely expected adoption of the challenge system — which is powered by baseball’s automated strike zone, known as ABS — was announced Tuesday after years of testing in the minor leagues and a major-league debut this year in spring training and the All-Star Game.
The new system „[strikes] the right balance of preserving the integral role of the umpire in the game with the ability to correct a missed call in a high-leverage situation, all while preserving the pace and rhythm of the game“, said MLB commissioner Rob Manfred in a press release.
Only batters, pitchers and catchers are allowed to challenge the umpire’s call. The challenge, indicated by a player tapping his head, must be made immediately after the call of ball or strike. Afterward, an automated video will play on the scoreboard showing the location of the pitch and strike zone as detected by a series of 12 cameras placed around every ballpark.
Each team will begin each game with two challenges. If a call is overturned, the team retains that challenge; if a call is upheld, the team loses that challenge. Once a team loses both its challenges, no player can challenge any more calls.
Tayler Saucedo, a relief pitcher who played with the Seattle Mariners this season, says he’s glad it’s coming to the Major Leagues after some initial reluctance. „I was always anti ABS but after experiencing it this year this will be a great change and fans will love it as well“, he posted on X. „Also felt it made umpires better. Doesn’t slow down the game at all and it takes about in total 10 seconds.“
In spring training this year, players collectively challenged more than 1,000 balls and strikes. The umpire’s calls were overturned just over half the time. Catchers, correct 56% of the time, were the most effective at challenging, and pitchers, at 41%, were the least. MLB reported that each challenge added around 14 seconds to the duration of a game.
Most MLB players have already experienced the ABS challenge system, whether in spring training this season or during their time in the minor leagues, where MLB has been testing ABS since 2021.
John Stanton, the owner of the Seattle Mariners, called the system a „big step forward for the game.“
„ABS Challenge strikes the right balance of putting a tool in the players‘ hands to correct a missed call in a high leverage spot while retaining the human element of the game and adding a new fan-friendly engagement moment“, said Stanton, who is also currently the chairman of MLB’s joint competition committee, a rotating group of six team owners, four active players and one active umpire that votes on new rules.
Replay review has been part of baseball since 2008, when MLB first allowed the use of video to review home runs. Since then, replay review has widened to include many other types of calls, including force-outs on bases and whether fly balls were caught before touching the ground.
Called balls and strikes, though, were long accepted as a „human element“ of the game, even as technology made it easier to spot bad calls and increased the pressure on umpires. The pressure came both internally from league officials and externally from TV audiences and fans on social media, to standardize the zone and increase their accuracy.
The ABS system was created by Hawk-Eye, the company behind automated replay systems in other sports, including out-of-bounds calls in tennis and offside reviews in soccer. Over four seasons of testing in Minor League Baseball, officials collected feedback from players, umpires and fans. Then they made tweaks — first to the strike zone by lowering the height of the automated zone after players reported the system produced a taller zone than they expected.
MLB also tried out a „full ABS“ system in which the system fed umpires the call of every pitch, but players and fans alike reported preferring the challenge system. According to an internal MLB poll conducted last summer with Triple-A players and field staff, only 8 percent preferred the fully automated system, compared to 54% who preferred the challenges and 38% who preferred traditional human umpires.
„Throughout this process we have worked on deploying the system in a way that’s acceptable to players“, said Manfred. „The strong preference from players for the Challenge format over using the technology to call every pitch was a key factor in determining the system we are announcing today.“

The ‘Knights of Guinevere’ Pilot Brings Some Good, Surreal Sci-Fi

0

Glitch Productions‘ latest animated series, the 2D sci-fi thriller ‚Knights of Guinevere,‘ is more than some horror-tinged Disney potshots.
For years, animation fans have clamored online for new, original works to fall in love with alongside cherished, already established IP. After this summer’s KPop Demon Hunters provided a successful (and ongoing) bit of originality, that momentum continues with Knights of Guinevere, whose pilot premiered this past weekend on YouTube.
Created by Dana Terrace, Zach Marcus, and John Bailey Owen, the creator and key writers on Disney’s The Owl House, Guinevere feels at once like its own distinct, freaky thing while also being informed by the trio’s previous (and truncated) collaboration. That’s made clear right away at the start, where a young girl named Olivia Park is working on an android in a dark room. When her father, Orville, beckons her over, Olivia brings Gwen behind her using cords coming out of the android’s stomach, which look like intestines and are slathered in blue goo.
When she’s of age, Olivia is to inherit the Park Planet run by her father, a vibrant, Disneyland-looking place that touts Gwen as its key mascot, primarily as a princess but in additional outfits. The girl is stone-faced while hearing this information, but after dragging her Gwen droid around, the droid suddenly decides to escape by jumping off the building and falling into the ocean below. She’s not found until years later by Frankie, a factory laborer and scavenger living in the city of M7 with her park engineer friend Andi. While unaware of the value of this specific Gwen droid, Frankie thinks fixing it could help her rise above her station and get a better Park Planet gig.
Not much information is explicitly doled out about Park Planet, to which we’re kept at a literal distance from in both the past and present, since it floats high above the planet, occasionally dumping its trash into the ocean below. Where the script tells us nothing, the visuals convey everything; a montage after Gwen’s escape chronicles the park’s rise to fame and glory, which is then contrasted with snarky fan comments about morphing Gwen into a girlboss heroine and other theme park controversies. The city below seems to have no love for the orbiting attraction or anyone associated with it and any real capacity, possibly owing to an illness some of its citizens seem to have.
Like The Owl House or Steven Universe, Knights of Guinevere uses wide shots and background details to convey a history the show is unable (or unwilling) to fully spell out at this juncture. Everything about Frankie and Andi’s world makes clear why they’d want to leave M7 by any means possible while still finding comfort in living with each other. As the first 2D animated series from Glitch Productions (late of The Amazing Digital Circus and The Gaslight District), the studio picked a great project to start with. There are shades of Owl House in the world and character designs while still feeling like its own thing, and it never feels out of place when the show switches from the cold, grungy real world to glimpses of a better, happier world that the Park Planet ads try to convey.
All three of the leading women are compelling in their own ways, but the star of the piece right now is Frankie. Michaela Laws and the character’s design imbue her with a lot of scrappy charm and she looks to be the heart of the show as everything else around her threatens to fall apart. The relationships she has with both Andi and the Gwen droid will drive the plot and seem very fascinating from what we get here, and both Laws and Andi’s actor, Zelda Khan Black, bounce off each other very well.
Since this is a pilot, the other characters get just enough material to make them interesting in later episodes, particularly Frankie’s dad, Sparky, and an older version of Olivia that’s become obsessed with “fixing” Gwen.
As for Gwen herself, the show lays enough breadcrumbs to become invested or concerned in whatever’s happened to her in the past and present. Vocally, Eden Riegel gives a great Disney Princess (and delivers a great scream out of nowhere), and with how the camera lingers on her decayed form and placid smile, it’s hard not to want answers for how she got to this state.
Knowing this creative team and Owl House’s affinity for body horror, it’s likely the revelations to her whole deal will be unpleasant without feeling unearned or feeling too out there for the premise. Despite being a prop desired by the other characters, she’s treated with a good amount of sympathy in every scene she’s in, and it’ll be interesting to see how the show further characterizes her through her fairy tale-like perspective.
Given the way things publicly shook out with Owl House and the very clear digs at how Disney runs the princess side of its business, it’d be easy for Knights of Guinevere to coast on those jabs while exploring the darker side of a massive corporation in a sci-fi setting. Present as that all is, it’s just a part of the show rather than the entire thing, and what’s here more than stands on its own. The metrics thus far have shown it’s a success, and count us invested to see where this all goes next.
