New features make the Google Translate app more useful and easier to use

0

The app will now explain certain translations and even teach you how to learn new languages.
Get this. Google Translate, according to Google, translates one trillion words every month. And with so many different languages and so many different words, you can be sure that not every word is translated correctly. Unlike kids taking a test in your typical algebra class, Google Translate does not have to show its work. But that might change. Google is testing a feature for the Google Translate app that replaces the „Ask A Follow-up“ button (which isn’t available on the iOS version of the app) with two new buttons that say „Understand“ and „Ask.“New buttons add new capabilities to the Google Translate app The „Understand“ button provides the reasoning behind a specific translation. It shows additional context and insight about the translated text. Such insights include:Grammar explanations that take a deep dive into the sentence structure.Word sense and idioms. This explains how and why certain words or phrases were interpreted and translatedCultural notes explain how politeness levels or gender impacts the translation. The „Ask“ button will allow the user to ask AI to ask for a customized or improved translation. For example, you can ask for:A translation using a different tone such as formal, casual, or simplified.Ask for alternative translations.Ask to see a regional variant of the translation.Ask AI to use something specific in a sentence. These two AI buttons are considered experimentalWith this feature, Google Translate does more than provide you with a translation. Now, the app will give you the reasoning behind a certain translation and give you the tools needed to get a translation that matches your specific needs.Larger font makes translated words easer to seeAnother new feature being tested was found in the Google Translate for Android app in version 9.21.36.816661266.2. This has yet to hit my Pixel 6 Pro which is running version 9.20.43.815830677.1. This change shows the translated text in larger font than the one previously used. The larger font is also used in full-screen mode. This should make it easier for people with less than perfect vision to see the translation. This feature has already been found in the iOS version of Google Translate and should arrive soon for the Android version of the app. If you don’t have the app on either platform, you can tap this link to download Google Translate on an Android phone. To install the app on your iPhone, tap on this link.Learn a new language using the Google Translate appGoogle Translate product manager Matt Sheets says, „We’re going far beyond simple language-to-language translation.“ He added that the app now will allow users to „listen and speak with confidence on the topics you care about.“ This comment is in line with Google’s previous announcement made during the summer that the Translate app would be more educational and offer Duolingo style lessons.Open the Google Translate app and at the bottom right of the display there is a button that says „Practice.“ You can choose to put English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese on the screen while you learn Spanish or French. You can also select your current level of the language you want to learn from Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced. You can also choose to learn how to handle professional conversations, everyday interactions, and how to speak with friends and family. You can learn how to speak your second language while attending school or university, discussing arts, culture, and entertainment, and when navigating travel and transportation.Googler Sheets wrote back in August, „Whether you’re an early learner looking to begin practicing conversation or an advanced speaker looking to brush up on vocabulary for an upcoming trip, Translate can now create tailored listening and speaking practice sessions just for you. These interactive practices are generated on-the-fly and intelligently adapt to your skill level.“ The language feature is considered to be in Beta.

Brewers top Cubs in Game 5 to make first NLCS since 2018

0

The Brewers won their first playoff series since 2018 after defeating rival Chicago 3-1 in the decisive Game 5 of their NL Division Series on Saturday.
MILWAUKEE — Andrew Vaughn hit a tiebreaking homer in the fourth inning, and William Contreras and Brice Turang also went deep as the Milwaukee Brewers shook off their recent history of playoff frustration by beating the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in the decisive fifth game of their NL Division Series on Saturday.
The Brewers, making their seventh playoff appearance in the past eight years, earned their first postseason series win since sweeping Colorado in the 2018 NLDS. The Brewers were on the verge of their second World Series appearance in franchise history that year before losing Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at home to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, they get another NLCS matchup with the Dodgers, who beat the Philadelphia Phillies in four games in the other NL Division Series. Game 1 is Monday at Milwaukee, who were 6-0 vs. L.A. this season. The Dodgers opened as minus-210 favorites to win the series at ESPN BET Sportsbook.
„A lot of people didn’t believe in them early on, and they just continued to stay relentless“, Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after Game 5.
After losing slugging shortstop Willy Adames in free agency and trading away All-Star closer Devin Williams last winter, the scrappy Brewers finished the regular season with the best record in the majors at 97-65.
So perhaps it was no surprise that NL Central champion Milwaukee won with an all-hands-on-deck pitching approach in the final game against wild-card Chicago. Trevor Megill, Jacob Misiorowski, Aaron Ashby, Chad Patrick and Abner Uribe combined on a four-hitter, with Uribe getting six outs for the first multi-inning save of his career.
„You can call them the average Joes, but I say they’re the above-average Joes“, Murphy said.
The victory was particularly sweet for Milwaukee fans because it came against the club’s biggest rival and knocked Cubs manager Craig Counsell out of the postseason.
Counsell grew up in the Milwaukee area, played for the Brewers and became the winningest manager in team history until he left for Chicago.
In the two seasons since Counsell’s departure, Brewers fans have booed every mention of his name whenever the Cubs have visited American Family Field. They did it again Saturday, though the sellout crowd appeared to include more Cubs backers than in Milwaukee’s Game 1 and Game 2 home victories.
„Just really happy for ‚em“, longtime Brewers star Christian Yelich said of Milwaukee fans. „They’ve stuck with us over the years through some really tough losses. And I know there was a lot riding on this series for them just because of the rivalry, and really happy that we could deliver for ‚em because they really deserve it.“
The Cubs had forced a Game 5 by winning two straight at Wrigley Field. They were attempting to become the 11th team to erase a 2-0 deficit and win a best-of-five playoff series, something last accomplished by the New York Yankees against Cleveland in their 2017 ALDS.
„I’m disappointed. I’m sad“, Counsell said. „I think this team did a lot to honor the Chicago Cub uniform. In the big picture, that’s how I feel.“
Homers produced all the runs in this winner-take-all game, and each of Milwaukee’s came with two outs.
Contreras hit a 389-foot shot to left-center off Drew Pomeranz in the first inning. Vaughn sent a 3-2 pitch from Colin Rea over the left-field wall to break a 1-all tie, and Turang provided some insurance with a 416-foot blast to center off Andrew Kittredge in the seventh.
„We fight back. That’s our mentality. We fight back“, Vaughn said. „We’re going to punch someone else. We’re going to throw it right back.“
Chicago’s Seiya Suzuki greeted Misiorowski by sending a 101.4 mph fastball into the Cubs‘ bullpen to lead off the second inning, but that’s the only run the rookie right-hander allowed in four innings. Misiorowski struck out three while giving up three hits and walking none to earn his second win of the series.
He pitched three innings of shutout relief in Milwaukee’s 7-3 triumph in Game 2.
„It’s been crazy“, the 23-year-old Misiorowski said. „It’s been a whirlwind and it’s been fun.“
The Brewers had Misiorowski enter the game in the second inning after Megill worked as the opener and retired the side in order in the first. The Cubs had totaled 11 first-inning runs in the first four games of this series without going scoreless in the opening frame.
After Suzuki’s homer, the Cubs didn’t score again.
Chicago’s best threat came when it put two on with nobody out in the sixth against Ashby, who had thrown 32 pitches two nights earlier in Milwaukee’s 6-0 Game 4 loss. Michael Busch hit a leadoff single before Ashby hit Nico Hoerner with a pitch.
Ashby got Kyle Tucker to strike out swinging at a 3-2 pitch for the first out. Patrick then came out of the bullpen and retired Suzuki on a fly to left before Ian Happ struck out looking.
„We didn’t get it done today, and that hurts“, Counsell said. „Man, it doesn’t feel good, but I think when you zoom back a little bit, we did some good things as well.“

Rapper D4vd transfers deeds to Texas homes to mother following swatting incident: report

0

The LA-based rapper made the deed transfer weeks after the body of missing 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found dismembered in D4vd’s Tesla which was abandoned at a Hollywood impound lot.
Rapper D4vd, whose abandoned car was found containing a dismembered 15-year-old girl, has transferred the deed to two Texas homes to his mother, according to a report.
The 20-year-old Queens-born and LA-based musician transferred the pair of Houston-area residences, which he owns under a trust, on Sept. 18 and Sept. 22, TMZ reported citing legal documents.
The move came the same day that one of the homes was the victim of a swatting incident, according to the outlet.
D4vd’s parents answered the door during that swatting incident at the Houston area home with his frazzled mother assuring police that only she, her husband, other son, and daughter were inside.
D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has become the subject of much speculation and possible criminal investigations after missing 15-year-old girl Celeste Rivas Hernandez was found dismembered in his abandoned Tesla on Sept. 9.
Authorities revealed Rivas’ body was found in a severe state of decomposition while in the vehicle at the Hollywood impound lot. Officials believe she had been dead for weeks.
The poor girl’s mother revealed to TMZ that her daughter had been dating someone named David — with internet sleuths also uncovering footage from a past livestream that showed the rapper speaking of grooming a girl who is identified as Celeste.
After the gruesome discovery, an eerie unreleased song from the 20-year-old entitled “Celeste” spread across the internet.
“Oh, Celeste, the girl with my name tattooed on her chest, smell her on my clothes like cigarettes,” he sings in the song which circulated online.
The rapper — who literally flopped during a failed backflip during a Coachella performance — canceled his planned tour for the also delayed upcoming album “Withered.”
Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing and Wasserman, which represented the rapper, have put all promotional activities on hold until the police investigation is resolved, TMZ previously reported.
No charges have been filed in the case and D4vd is cooperating with Los Angeles police.

Weekly poll: how should our Phone Finder deal with foldables and their different dimensions?

0

Should phones be filtered by how thick they are when folded or unfolded? What about width and height? We recently had a discussion at the office and wanted.
We recently had a discussion at the office and wanted to get your input too – which dimensions should the Phone Finder use for foldable phones when you are searching for specific dimensions (thickness, width, height)?
First, let’s examine the issue. We list two thickness dimensions for foldables – one for when the phone is opened and one for when it is closed. The closed thickness is around double the open thickness, but that is not quite accurate because hinges add a bit extra and that differs from phone to phone.
Similarly, there are two numbers for the width on book-style foldables and the height on flip foldables, depending on whether the phone is folded or not. Again, one number is close to double the other number, but hinges complicate things.
Here is how the Phone Finder works right now. When you use the sliders for thickness, width and height, you get results based on the phone’s unfolded state. Is this the best way or should we switch things around?
For example, the first sub-10mm foldable was a major milestone. But as it stands, there is no easy way to find foldables that are under 10mm when folded – if you set the slider at 10mm, all of them show up because the filter looks at the unfolded thickness, which might not be what you expect.
You can’t just drag the slider to 5mm (half the desired thickness) either. “Folded thickness is roughly double the unfolded thickness” is an okay rule of thumb, but in practice it doesn’t work very well for filtering search results.
What about width and height, for book-style and flip foldables, respectively? The unfolded dimensions are important because they give you an idea of how the phone will fit in your hand. Folded dimensions are important because they give you an idea of how the phone will fit in your pocket.
So, should Phone Finder look at folded or unfolded dimensions when searching? Or maybe the folded thickness and unfolded width/height, depending on the style of foldable? This could get quite confusing, though, as the dimension used in the search will vary from phone to phone – especially when you get a mix of foldables and regular phones. What do you think? iPadOS 26 Makes The iPad A True MacBook Alternative — If You Use These 5 Features

0

iPadOS 26 finally makes the iPad feel like a real laptop, with windowed apps, background tasks, and smarter tools that boost everyday productivity.
It’s a yearly ritual: A new version of iPadOS is released, and long-time iPad users hold their breath, wondering if this is the year the iPad will finally replace their MacBook. For a long time, the iPad has had all the requisite hardware to do laptop duty, and in some areas it’s even better than the MacBook. Take Face ID and the touchscreen, for instance. It’s had the power, too. Just look at the iPad Pro M4. Apple must have decided to finally listen to its users, since iPadOS 26 took the training wheels off and let the iPad soar. Finally, any supported iPad can go almost neck and neck with a MacBook for common tasks. Even the most affordable iPad in Apple’s lineup can do things you’d otherwise need an $800 MacBook Air to achieve in the Apple ecosystem. Assuming, of course, you know about and use the features that finally make it laptop-ready.
Whether you’re a brand-new iPad owner or a long-time user, this guide is for you. We’ll cover five features in particular (there are more) that make the iPad effectively a slim, lightweight laptop computer. All features mentioned work on any device supporting iPadOS 26. After that, you only need these six tips for using your iPad as a laptop replacement, and your iPad transforms into a capable laptop competitor.Organize apps into windows
iPad has had Split View for years, but it was fairly limited. You could only run two apps side by side. The Slide Over window allowed you to quickly open a third one, but needless to say, this was not a proper multitasking solution. Stage Manager came close, allowing you to quickly switch between groups of windows for specific tasks. Now, in iPadOS 26, we finally get Windowed Apps. To enable this, head to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures, then enable the Windowed Apps setting.
Apple has done an excellent job incorporating the windowing system. Simply grab a corner and drag to resize. The app’s content will dynamically adjust to fit even the smallest windows. Dragging from the top bar relocates it, and swiping up from the bottom, like you normally do to go to the home screen, pushes your currently open windows off to the sides so you can open another app. Repeat this process across multiple apps until you have your ideal window configuration. Individual apps remember their size and position, so when you close them, they reopen in the same place later.
Along with windowing came the option to quarter and halve windows to your heart’s content, even with such small screen real estate. The easiest way to halve a window is to grab it by the top bar and flick it to one side of the screen. Barring that, you can use the new traffic light bar on the top left and assign a position via the green button. Keyboard users can hold down on the Globe and Control key and then quickly snap a window left and right, or top and bottom with the arrow keys. Double-tapping the top bar, like on Mac, maximizes an app.Access all shortcuts with the menu bar
The iPad has supported keyboard shortcuts like Command + C for copy for a long time, but you had to know them. Prior to iPadOS 26, the only way to know what keyboard shortcuts there were was to visit Apple’s support page or start trying macOS ones to figure out if they worked, with mixed results. Thankfully, iPadOS 26 introduced an extremely helpful menu bar that works very much like the macOS version. Reach to the top of the screen and swipe down to show it; when you have a mouse connected, it will appear when you move your cursor to the top.
This has a few benefits. One, it allows you to have a more desktop-like workflow if you’re the sort of person who uses the menu bar rather than keyboard shortcuts. Two, it makes it easier to find features that you couldn’t otherwise access, or discover features you didn’t know existed. Three, it gives you keyboard-like functionality even when you don’t have one. Best of all, it seems to work for most apps regardless of the developer.
There’s only one minor issue with the menu bar: it now interrupts your muscle memory. In the past, swiping down from the top like that would pull down your notification drawer. Instead, you’ll now reveal the menu bar and then drag the app out of its full-screen configuration. The areas where you drag down for notifications, the menu bar, and resizing are therefore narrower and confusing, so prepare for a couple of months of frustration as you get used to this one. And if, for whatever reason, you don’t like the menu bar, you can disable it in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > Swipe to Reveal Menu Bar.Manage files in the new files app
To be on laptop duty, a good file browser is a must, and that was one of the biggest limitations of iPadOS. The Files app used to be frustratingly insufficient, and people (myself included) turned to third-party alternatives to do even basic file management. That has changed. Now, with iPadOS 26, the Files app can handle most everyday tasks.
For starters, you can set up the List view exactly the way you want it; folders can be expanded by tapping the arrow, and columns can be resized. macOS-like file info previews allow you to quickly check metadata. Similar to macOS, you can change the color of folders and add an emoji to quickly identify them. If there’s a particular folder you use a lot, you can pin it to the dock for quick access; hold down on that folder until the context menu appears, then go to Add To > Dock. For those iCloud folders you use a lot — especially offline — you can now choose the „Keep Downloaded“ option in the context menu.
One of the biggest changes to the Files app is the ability to easily change default app settings. Normally, this pops up when you first try to open a specific file. If you want to change that default app later, open Get Info from the context menu and then change it from the drop-down menu next to Always Open With. This is huge, since previously the Files app had a pretty limited preview option that didn’t work with all files, nor did it work well with the ones it supported. People working with iCloud documents that they need to open elsewhere in the Files app will love this.View, fill out, and sign with Preview
One of the biggest improvements to iPadOS 26 is the addition of apps that had been missing for some time. Take the new Phone app on iPad, or the long-awaited Journal app — an iPhone exclusive for far too long. To really get the iPad ready for laptop duty, though, it was in dire need of Mac’s Preview app, a multi-purpose file viewer and editor on macOS. Now it’s here. Preview on iPad brings some of macOS’s best features to the tablet, plus a few unique to the iPad.
Probably the biggest feature right out of the box is PDF management. The Preview app on iPad is an easy, versatile, and free way to fill out forms and sign documents. Preview offers a bevy of PDF editing tools that let you crop pages, add highlights and underlines to text, search the document, and more. It also supports scanning documents to create your own PDFs. Sensitive documents can be password-protected. Of course, you can now set up Preview as the default app for all your PDFs. Preview also has a handful of smaller features that may come in handy, like removing image backgrounds. We imagine iPadOS 27 will continue to expand its functionality.
Finding suitable Adobe Acrobat alternatives on most platforms (including iPad) has long been a nightmare. Feature-rich PDF apps tend to be overpriced or cluttered with ads, and many don’t get the job done. The addition of Preview means you can delete whatever PDF app you were previously using in favor of it. Preview may also alleviate privacy concerns, considering PDF apps like Adobe Acrobat have, in the past, been criticized for how they handle your personal files.Run background tasks
When you use a laptop, you expect processes that you start and then minimize to keep running in the background until they finish, regardless of what you’re doing. Not so on iPadOS 18 and prior. Say you start exporting a movie file and then exit for just a couple of seconds to check emails. iPad’s aggressive resource management would terminate the process, and you’d have to restart from zero. When an export can take a couple of minutes, it’s not convenient to have to leave the window open that whole time. iPadOS 26 finally lets background tasks continue even when you swipe away to do something else. A Live Activity notification helpfully tracks the process so you don’t have to open the app to check on it.
Pro iPad users will notice this change the most. Apps like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro support background tasks out of the box. However, other processes like downloading files in Safari or copying files in the Files app now get the same convenience. You no longer have to sit around waiting for a process to complete before continuing with what you’re doing, which makes the iPad’s productivity workflow much more laptop-like.
There is one downside to this functionality: it depends entirely on the developers of the apps you use to implement it. Based on personal experience, app developers have been slow to adopt even the Liquid Glass design of iPadOS 26, so background task support may drag its feet, too. That said, there’s a ton of promise here. iPadOS 26 also includes another hidden upgrade, allowing apps to use its local models to run tasks offline for better privacy protection. AI functionality that requires background processing time will no longer interrupt whatever you’re doing.
