“I thought that as a matter of political stage craft it was strange,” Maddow told Brian Williams. “Which is I suppose not to be — not that unusual given that he’s operating from this resort, and this was produced by White House staff, presumably in terms of feeding this out to us rather than this being the president speaking from a more typical location.”

Maddow further added she thinks Trump’s “remarks about his sympathy for the Syrian people will be hard to square in the days ahead given his ban on Syrian refugees.”

President Donald Trump Thursday night said there is “no dispute” that Bashar al-Assad’s regime is Syria was behind the use of “banned chemical weapons” that killed dozens of Syrian civilians earlier this week , speaking moments after the U. S. launched an air strike on Syria’s Shayrat airfield, where Mr. Trump said the deadly attack originated.
“Using a deadly nerve agent, Assad choked out the lives of helpless men, women and children,” Mr. Trump said.
“No child of God should ever suffer such horror,” Mr. Trump continued.
Mr. Trump said the Syrian refugee crisis “continues to deepen” as the region “continues to destabilize,” threatening the security of the U. S. and her allies. Mr. Trump made the statements from his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, shortly after the United Nations Security Council canceled a vote on any intervention in Syria after the chemical attack. The strike involved nearly 60 cruise missiles, which are GPS-guided and are very precise.
Military intervention marked a sharp pivot for Mr. Trump from his previous stance on Syria and the Assad regime. Mr. Trump had been reluctant to interfere in Syria, first expressing his attitude had changed at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden Wednesday.
“That attack on children had a big impact on me,” Mr. Trump said at the time. “Big impact.”

The Syrian government has denied the use of chemical weapons on its own people.
Russia warned the U. S. not to intervene in Syria before the strike, raising questions about how Russia will respond.
“All responsibility if military action occurs will be on the shoulders of those who initiated such a doubtful, tragic enterprise,” Russian Ambassador Vladimir Safronkov told reporters following a closed-door Security Council meeting on Syria.
Mr. Trump, back in 2013, expressed his opposition to intervening in Syria.

He also said the president must get approval from Congress first, before taking any military action.

U. S. strike hits Syrian airfield associated with regime’s chemical weapons program, directly linked to horrific attack

The United States attacked a Syrian airfield with nearly 60 cruise missiles Thursday night as a response to a chemical weapons attack it blamed on President Bashar al-Assad, CBS News has confirmed.
A U. S. official said the site, called Shayrat, was associated with the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons program and was directly linked to the horrific attack on Tuesday. The airfield is located about 50 miles south of the village where 80 civilians died.
The official said that the U. S. assesses with a high degree of confidence that the chemical weapons attack was launched from the site by air assets under the command of the Assad regime.
“It craters the air base runway from use for some time in the future,” Christopher Harmer, a senior naval analyst at the Middle East Security Project, told CBSN.
The attack was launched from war ships stationed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and targeted hangars and fuel storage facilities.
The Pentagon released images and video Thursday showing the strike launch from the USS Ross which fired cruise missiles aimed at aircraft, shelters, petroleum and logistics storage areas, ammo bunkers, radars (air defense and air traffic control) and air defenses, according to the Pentagon.

There is a 99 percent reliability rate with the cruise missiles, which hit targets within 1 meter.
Each cruise missile carries a 1,000-pound warhead. So nearly 60 cruise missiles going off in 60 seconds amounts to 60,000 pounds of explosives in the space of 60 seconds.
USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, conducted naval operations in the U. S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U. S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.
Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis provided CBS News a statement with details on Thursday’s attack and why it targeted Shayrat.

In a televised statement, President Trump said he authorized the airstrikes because “it is in the vital, national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the use of deadly chemical weapons.”
“Assad choked out the lives of innocent men, women and children,” Mr. Trump declared in a televised speech.
After Mr. Trump changed his position on Assad staying in power earlier Thursday, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson briefed him on military options in Syria. In an impromptu press conference, Tillerson said of Assad, “It will seem that there would be no role for him to govern the Syrian people.” When asked about a possibility of removing Assad, Tillerson replied “Those steps are underway.”
