AARP dangles $10K prize in front of startups to help aging population

A team of impetuous 20-something-year-old startup founders may not automatically reach out to the AARP to bring its products to market. Ignoring the aging population isn’t the sharpest move, however. With its Innovation Champion Award , AARP wants to highlight that those over 50 have sacks of disposable cash and aren’t afraid to spend it — as long as the value is there.
“Historically, people would retire at 65 and then have another 10 years to live or so,” says Anne Marie Kilgallon, vice president of Enterprise Strategy and Innovation for the AARP. “But things have changed a lot since then. These days, people live into their 90s, and these ‘bonus years’ are important.”
Ageism is a real thing, and it swings both ways. Remember, oh, about 100 words ago, when I flippantly referred to startup founders as 20-year-olds? You probably didn’t even notice, because that sort of thing happens all the time. “Young people are selfish and impulsive” and “old people hate technology” are truisms that hold true less and less often. This is one fight AARP is picking with its Disrupt Aging campaign — and a part of that is its new Innovation Champion Award.
For most businesses, $10,000 is a nice chunk of change, but for the most successful of businesses isn’t going to move the needle. AARP knows that, but for them, it’s more of a $10,000 spotlight pointing at an enormous opportunity than the cash incentive in and of itself.
“Research shows that 70 percent of U. S. disposable income is controlled by an aging population,” Kilgallon explains, “so there are tremendous business opportunities here. We just want to help companies find those opportunities and help solve some of our key challenges in the process.”
The key challenges are reflected in the company’s awards categories, which are daily essential activities, caregiver quality of life, health and safety awareness, care coordination, social well-being and transition support. The companies up for awards will be judged on a number of criteria, not least of which is whether the businesses are viable.
“We love technology,” Kilgallon says, but stresses that her organization isn’t pushing tech for tech’s sake. “Winning technology needs to be affordable. It needs to have a business model that makes it viable. And it needs to be extremely well-designed. Gone are the days where the older generation eschewed all technology, but that doesn’t mean the tools and services shouldn’t be well-designed and easy to use.”
If the $10,000 doesn’t get your business senses a-tingling, the grand prize probably should: It includes traveling to Washington, DC to speak with top AARP executives about your business. A golden opportunity, of course, for a company that could benefit from AARP’s amplification.
“AARP is a social impact organization,” Kilgallon explains when I push her on what’s in it for them. “What’s in it for us is that we want to shine a light on the incredible innovation that is happening in products and services. We hope that the winners solve real, concrete problems experienced by people aged 50 and older.”
While there are fewer companies actively marketing to the silver economy , there are a few that do, and that do it well.
“I have been keeping an eye on Honor. The way the company has rolled out is really interesting, and it’s a great model for how to connect care-givers to individuals in need of care,” Kilgallon says. “ Caring Village is another startup worth looking at. They are all about the connection between family, care givers and care recipients.”
Nominations for the innovation champion award open today.

Walmart acquires outdoor retailer Moosejaw for $51 million

Walmart this morning announced it’s acquiring a leading outdoor retailer Moosejaw for approximately $51 million in an all-cash deal. Headquartered in Madison Heights, Michigan, the retailer has both a large online presence as well as 10 physical stores across Michigan and the midwest U. S. Walmart says it will allow Moosejaw to continue to operate its website and stores as a standalone and complementary brand going forward, much as it has with other recent acquisitions.
The news follows Walmart’s acquisition of online footwear retailer ShoeBuy last month, which took place by way of Jet.com, a company Walmart itself purchased last summer for $3 billion. With the addition of Moosejaw, Walmart now operates a number of standalone brands, including also Hayneedle Inc., another Jet.com purchase, as well as Sam’s Club.
Moosejaw recently made Internet Retailer’s 2017 “Hot 100” list , but Walmart’s interest in the retailer has a lot to do with the category it operates in and the industry relationships it brings to the table, in addition to its expertise in social media marketing which allowed it to attract a younger audience.
The Moosejaw deal will give Walmart another entry point into apparel, a popular online retail category, as the retailer offers over 120,000 SKUs from more than 400 apparel brands, including Patagonia, The North Face, Marmot, Arc’Teryx and others. Beyond clothing and accessories, the store carries related gear for climbing, hiking, camping, snow sports, yoga, swimming and biking.
Clothing and accessories became the largest online retail category for the first time in 2015, according to comScore , and is now an area of increased competition in the e-commerce industry.
Amazon, for example, has been rapidly expanding into clothing with the addition of its own vertical, Amazon Fashion, where it now sells items from over a half dozen private label brands. It’s reportedly working on its own workout clothing and its own bras , too. Yesterday, it was also reported to be launching its own-label fashion in the U. K.
Founded in 1992 by Robert Wolfe and David Jaffe, Moosejaw today has over 350 employees. The deal closed late in the day on February 13th, and will see Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford, his executive team, and all Moosejaw employees joining Walmart’s new U. S. e-commerce retail organization. The employees will continue to be based in Michigan, but Comerford will now oversee the outdoor category for Walmart e-commerce, the retail organization now headed by Scott Hilton.
Moosejaw’s physical stores will remain open, as well. However, the majority of its business is done online – as much as 85 percent.
“We’re thrilled to join Walmart’s eCommerce team and look forward to the opportunity to lead the outdoor vertical across their online presence,” said Comerford, in a statement. “Our new relationship puts us in a unique position to manage these marketplaces for our brand partners, but inclusion on Jet.com or any of Walmart’s e-commerce sites is 100% at each brand’s discretion.”
As with Jet.com, Moosejaw will continue to be consumer-facing standalone brand, but integrations behind the scenes could help Walmart. Jet and Walmart merged their warehousing and supply chain operations, allowing Walmart to roll out free, 2-day shipping without a membership in January.
In Moosejaw’s case, Walmart will gain access to the industry relationships the retailer has with top apparel brands, which will allow Walmart to discuss carrying select items from those brands on other storefronts, like Walmart.com, Jet or ShoeBuy, if it chose.
“There’s going to be a lot of integration on the backend,” explains Walmart spokesperson Ravi Jariwala, about the deal’s impact at Walmart. “[This will include] things like taking advantage of the bigger scale and leveraging those costs for things like shipping rates, credit card fees, and transaction processing fees,” he said.
Jariwala also noted that operating Hayneedle independently worked out well for Jet.com, and this is how Walmart will proceed with Moosejaw as well.
“That’s a model we’re looking to replicate,” he said.

Officials: Trump knew Flynn misled WH weeks before ouster

WASHINGTON (AP) – Just six days into his presidency, Donald Trump was informed his national security adviser had misled his vice president about contacts with Russia. Trump kept his No. 2 in the dark and waited nearly three weeks before ousting the aide, Michael Flynn , citing a slow but steady erosion of trust, White House officials said.
Flynn was interviewed by the FBI about his telephone conversations with Russia ’s ambassador to the U. S., a sign his ties to Russia had caught the attention of law enforcement officials.
But in the White House ’s retelling of Flynn ’s stunning downfall, his error was not that he discussed U. S. sanctions with the Russian before the inauguration – a potential violation of a rarely enforced law – but the fact that he denied it for weeks, apparently misleading Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump aides about the nature of the conversations. White House officials said they conducted a thorough review of Flynn ’s interactions, including transcripts of calls secretly recorded by U. S. intelligence officials, but found nothing illegal.
Pence, who had vouched for Flynn in a televised interview, is said to have been angry and deeply frustrated.
And Trump lashed out at the news media Wednesday morning, sending out a tweet berating some news organizations for focusing on “This Russian connection non-sense.” In a post on his verified Twitter account, Trump said, “The fake news media is going crazy with their conspiracy theories and blind hatred.” He added that the news reporting was “merely an attempt to cover-up the many mistakes made in Hillary Clinton’s losing campaign.”
Trump also asserted in a tweet: “Information is being illegally given to the failing @nytimes & @washingtonpost by the intelligence community (NSA and FBI?). Just like Russia.”
At the White House Tuesday, press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters: “The evolving and eroding level of trust as a result of this situation and a series of other questionable incidents is what led the president to ask General Flynn for his resignation.”
Flynn , in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation, said Monday “there were no lines crossed” in his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.
The explanation of the episode left many questions unanswered, including why Trump didn’t alert Pence to the matter and why Trump allowed Flynn to keep accessing classified information and taking part in the president’s discussions with world leaders up until the day he was fired.
White House officials also struggled to explain why Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway had declared the president retained “full confidence” in Flynn just hours before the adviser had to submit his letter of resignation.
Later Tuesday, The New York Times reported that U. S. agencies had intercepted phone calls last year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Donald Trump ’s 2016 campaign team. Current and former U. S. officials who spoke to the Times anonymously said they found no evidence that the Trump campaign was working with the Russians on hacking or other efforts to influence the election.
The White House shakeup, less than one month into Trump ’s tenure, marked another jarring setback for a new administration already dealing with tensions among top aides and a legal fight over the president’s travel ban order. Flynn ’s firing also heightened questions about the president’s friendly posture toward Russia. Democrats called for investigations into Flynn ’s contacts, and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said Congress needed to know whether he had been acting with direction from the president or others.
Trump initially thought Flynn could survive the controversy, according to a person with direct knowledge of the president’s views, but a pair of explosive stories in The Washington Post in recent days made the situation untenable. As early as last week, he and aides began making contingency plans for Flynn ’s dismissal, a senior administration official said. While the president was said to be upset with Flynn , he also expressed anger with other aides for “losing control” of the story and making his young administration look bad.
Pence spokesman Marc Lotter said Pence became aware that he had received “incomplete information” from Flynn only after the first Washington Post report Thursday night. Pence learned about the Justice Department warnings to the White House around the same time.
The officials and others with knowledge of the situation were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and requested anonymity.
Ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration, Pence and other officials insisted publicly that Flynn had not discussed sanctions in his talks with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. On Jan. 26, Acting Attorney General Sally Yates contacted White House counsel Don McGahn to raise concerns about discrepancies between the public accounting and what intelligence officials knew to be true about the contacts based on routine recordings of communications with foreign officials who are in the U. S.
The Justice Department warned the White House that the inconsistencies would leave the president’s top national security aide vulnerable to blackmail from Russia , according to a person with knowledge of the discussion. The president was informed of the warnings the same day, Spicer said.
Flynn was interviewed by the FBI around the same time, according to a U. S. official who was briefed on the investigation.
It was not immediately known what questions the FBI asked of Flynn or what he told law enforcement officials.
McGahn, along with chief of staff Reince Priebus and strategist Steve Bannon, also questioned Flynn multiple times in the ensuing weeks, a White House official said. Top aides also reviewed transcripts of Flynn ’s contacts with the ambassador, according to a person with knowledge of the review process.
At the same time, the official said Trump aides began taking steps to put some distance between the president and Flynn. CIA Director Mike Pompeo and retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, a top Flynn aide, started taking part in Trump ’s daily security briefings.
Top Trump advisers quietly met with Vice Admiral Robert Harward last week and spoke with the former Navy SEAL again Monday, the White House official said. Harward is seen as the top contender for the job, though former CIA Director David Petraeus and Kellogg, who has temporarily stepped into the role, are also under consideration.
Spicer said other “questionable incidents” had contributed to Flynn ’s firing. According to one person with knowledge of the matter, those incidents included Flynn seeking a security clearance for his son during the transition.
At the time, it was Pence who was again put in the position of defending Flynn on television, saying he had not sought a clearance for the retired general’s son.
A U. S. official told The Associated Press that Flynn was in frequent contact with Kislyak on the day the Obama administration slapped sanctions on Russia for election-related hacking, as well as at other times during the transition. Spicer said Flynn was not discussing sanctions at the president’s behest.
Before he resigned Monday night, Flynn told the investigative news nonprofit affiliated with the website The Daily Caller that he and Kislyak spoke only generally about the Russian diplomats expelled by President Barack Obama as part of the previous administration’s response to Moscow’s interference in the U. S. presidential election.
“It wasn’t about sanctions. It was about the 35 guys who were thrown out,” Flynn said. “It was basically: ‘Look, I know this happened. We’ll review everything.’ I never said anything such as, ‘We’re going to review sanctions,’ or anything like that.”
