The fingerprinting requirement will be rolled out first at Shenzhen Baoan International Airport beginning on Friday. This will eventually be introduced to other entry points across the country.

All foreigners aged between 14 and 70 years old are required to leave their fingerprints, the ministry said, although it did not mention if other biometric data will be collected. Foreigners with diplomatic passports and visas or those coming from countries that have reciprocal agreements with China are however not required to give their fingerprints, the Washington Post reported.
Chinese authorities said that the country has more than 76 million entries and exits in 2016 from foreigners. Most of them came from countries such as South Korea, Japan, the United States, and Russia.
„Storing biological identification information of people entering and leaving borders is an important border control measure, and many countries have started to implement the regulation,“ the statement said.
The latest regulation aims to strengthen immigration control and boost custom clearance efficiency. Other countries had also employed the system. For instance, the US has started the system since 2004 and is now conducting tests of facial recognition software and other biometric screening process. Japan also started fingerprinting in 2007.
Other countries with a similar requirement are Cambodia, France, Taiwan, among others. Meanwhile, China also assured that the new system is efficient and will not cause any delay.

Get ready for dirt, rocks, silt and did we mention rocks? King of the Hammers is the biggest off-road race in the country.
Are you ready for some seriously crazy off-roading? Then get ready for King of the Hammers!
The week long Burning Man for racers started this weekend with the King of the Motos race, where some seriously insane moto racers had a land rush start… at night. Exactly 107 racers from across the United States, Canada and Mexico endured rocks, silt and sand as they battled through three heats for the coveted first place trophy. In the end, Endurocross and Superenduro champion Colton Haaker won on his handy Husqvarna 350.

Wednesday marked the UTV side-by-side (think of them as souped-up golf carts) race, where the tiny little Polaris Rzr and Kawasaki Teryx side-by-sides tried their hand at the Hammers. At time of writing, it looks like two-time Ultra4 King Shannon Campbell has unofficially added another trophy to his case, followed closely by his son Wayland. Rounding out the Campbell racing dynasty was daughter Bailey, finishing 15th. X-Games medalist Sara Price, who was doing well in last year’s race until her UTV lost its drivetrain, finished 18th. With 74 teams starting, only half finished and all those who took the checkered flag can be proud of their accomplishment.
Taking place in Johnson Valley every February, King of the Hammers (KOH) brings more than 35,000 spectators, racers and crew support to the desert. A makeshift metropolis called Hammertown springs up on a dry lakebed and an entire week is devoted to racing everything from motorcycles and side-by-sides to regular trucks and unlimited four-wheel drive rigs. Competitors of each race find their way through boulder-strewn sections with names like Clawhammer, Wrecking Ball and my favorite, Chocolate Thunder. Find a good line and you can slowly pick your way up. Make a mistake and you have to winch your way up.
Only the strong survive the boulders of Johnson Valley.
Friday is the big show where the unlimited Ultra4 rigs vie for the title of the 2017 King of the Hammers. The final race is the longest, with over 200 miles of impossibly rocky terrain standing between racers and the finish line. Some drivers finish by sundown, many come in long after dark. With beefy axles, 40-inch tires and plenty of torque, these rigs defy physics as we know it. But to make things even more difficult, racers must also traverse vast sections of open desert at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.
Usually off-road vehicles are set up to do either slow-speed rock crawling or high-speed whoop bashing, but the custom-built Ultra4 rigs must to do both. Most teams choose to work within the confines of solid front and rear axles, betting that the stronger and more nimble components will give them the edge in the rock crawling. Others opt for an independent front suspension; not as good in the rocks but way better at soaking up whoops in the open desert. Since the race’s inception in 2007, Shannon Campbell has piloted the only independent front suspension rig to a win in 2008. He did it again in 2011, proving that his first IFS win was not just a fluke.
The King of the Hammers is the largest off-road race in North America and the toughest one-day off-road race on the planet. With over 100 teams entered and an attrition rate often as high as 75 percent or more, King of the Hammers is not to be missed.

A new Castlevania series is slay-ted for Netflix in 2017

Details are really thin on the ground, but the original series is coming this year.
Konami’s sprawling Castlevania video game franchise, starring the vampire-slaying Belmont family, has seen many adaptations — from comic books to novels to radio plays to interactive fiction. What it hasn’t seen is an official, dedicated adaptation to screen. This looks like it’s all changing, according to a Netflix announcement earlier today.
Among its upcoming original programming, the entertainment company included, „Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 Coming to Netflix in 2017. “
That’s all we know so far, although there are several names attached to the project. Producer Adi Shankar announced via Facebook that he was involved, with comics author Warren Ellis as the writer of the first and second seasons (Ellis announced in 2006 that he was writing a „Castlevania“ movie, but it never eventuated). In August 2015, Shankar also named Fred Seibert and Kevin Kolde of Frederator (“ Adventure Time „) fame, which points to the series being animated, rather than live action.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elusive white dwarf pulsar discovery is the first of its kind

After searching since the 1960s, astronomers have finally found the hypothesised white dwarf pulsar.

The first pulsar was discovered in 1967. It’s a type of star that rotates, sending out beams of electromagnetic radiation. As it rotates, it flashes brightly like a lighthouse in a pulsing rhythm, hence its name. Since that 1967 discovery, all pulsars in the sky have been neutron stars , the last, extremely dense stages of a dying star after supernova, before it collapses into a black hole. However, researchers hypothesised that white dwarfs — dying stars not massive enough to become neutron stars — could also become pulsars.
Tom Marsh and Boris Gänsicke of the University of Warwick’s Astrophysics Group, and David Buckley from the South African Astronomical Observatory, have just found proof of this in the form of a binary star called AR Scorpii, located in the constellation of Scorpius, just 380 light-years from Earth.
The pair consists of a red dwarf, and in proximity, a white dwarf pulsar the size of the Earth but 200,000 times more massive, lashing its neighbour with electrical energy and particles. And that proximity is close — a mere 1.4 million kilometres, three times the distance between the Earth and the moon.
The white dwarf’s rotational period is just two minutes, and the orbital period of the pair is three hours and 36 minutes.
The team have published their historic findings in the journal Nature Astronomy .

На маріупольському напрямку зі 152 і 122 міліметрової артилерії обстріляли Мар’їнку, Лебединське і Широкине. З мінометів – Широкине і Гнутове, а з гранатометів і стрілецької зброї – Лебединське, Водяне, Павлопіль, Широкине і Гнутове.
Загалом було зафіксовано 82 обстріли. Втрат серед українських військових немає.

Trump sends cautious letter to Beijing in hopes of ‘constructive relationship,’ but no sign of call — RT News

In the first direct communication between the two leaders since his inauguration, US President Donald Trump has addressed China’s Xi Jinping in a letter stating the intention to develop “a constructive relationship.” There is still no sign of a phone call being set up, however.
The letter contained a thank-you for Xi’s congratulatory note on Trump winning the presidency, and went on to suggest that the two countries find a way to smoothen out their relationship.
“President Trump stated that he looks forward to working with President Xi to develop a constructive relationship that benefits both the United States and China,” said a statement from White House spokesman Sean Spicer.
Despite this expressed intent at rapprochement, however, Xi only received a letter – even though Trump has held phone calls with more than a dozen international leaders since officially moving into the Oval Office.
According to Reuters, the letter was received, but no formal reaction or comment followed from Beijing on Thursday.
The news agency learned from Foreign Ministry sources in China that Beijing has been in no hurry to set up a call between the two leaders, reportedly out of fear that if the telephone conversation went wrong and the details were reported in the American press, Xi might lose face.
“It would be incredibly embarrassing for President Xi and for Chinese people, who value the concept of face,” a Chinese diplomatic source told the agency.
“These things need to happen in a very controlled environment for China, and China can’t guarantee that with the unpredictable Trump,” the source said, adding that the US president appears to have been “distracted” by other matters thus far.
The US president’s first three weeks in office have caused a stir with the Chinese, with a series of statements angering Beijing and leading to escalating tensions. This particularly concerns Trump’s questioning of the ‘One China’ policy, which holds that Taiwan is not an independent state, but part of mainland China – as well as the president’s allegations of Chinese currency manipulations and unfair trading practices, which Trump promised the American public he would address.
In line with this, the US leader has promised to impose new trade tariffs on Beijing.
There is also the question of Chinese policies in the South China Sea, where it has been setting up a military presence by building artificial islets and laying claim to territories others in the region also contest.
Washington has launched repeated verbal attacks and threats at Beijing, the latest coming from Defense Secretary James Mattis, who on Saturday reiterated the US commitment to its ally Japan. Tokyo has been growing uneasy at Chinese actions and has been beefing up its own military with record financial injections.
„I made clear that our long-standing policy on the Senkaku Islands stands – the US will continue to recognize Japanese administration of the islands and as such Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty applies,“ Mattis said at a press conference with his Japanese counterpart, Tomomi Inada.
According to the treaty, the US can involve itself in defending Japan – including over the Senkakus, located in the East China Sea, and disputed with China, which refers to them as the Diaoyus.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry nonetheless said last week it is willing to establish closer ties to Washington in working to settle all manner of disputes. However, as Trump’s letter indicates, both sides are being cautious about cooperation at a time when unsolved diplomatic disputes still hang overhead.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned on Wednesday that neither country should be interested in a conflict.
“For any sober-minded politician, they clearly recognize that there cannot be conflict between China and the United States because both will lose — and both sides cannot afford that,” the diplomat said after being asked about the possibility of war between the two nations during a press conference in Canberra, Australia, on Tuesday.

Wikipedia bans the UK Daily Mail because of 'sensationalism and flat-out fabrication'

The online encyclopedia’s editors decided the UK tabloid and its digital counterpart can no longer be cited as trusthworthy sources because of the publication’s predilection for making up stories.
Wikipedia’s editors have all but banned the UK’s tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail, and its online counterpart, for being a highly unreliable source of information.
The online encyclopedia’s editors decided to no longer allow the tabloid to be cited as a reliable source, and suggested 12,000 links to the publications should be re-evaluated. The informal discussions that led to the partial ban lasted two years, with a more formal exchange of opinions beginning at the start of the year.
The tabloid, which brought the world such wonderful and accurate articles as “ Dentist Anna Mackowiak Pulls Out Her Ex-Boyfriend’s Teeth “ – those people never existed -, “ Is the Changing Role of Women in Our Society Behind the Rise in Autism in the Past 30 Years? “ – original research was about obsessive personality types – and “ How the BBC Fell for a Marxist Plot to Destroy Civilization from Within “ – no comment needed – was deemed to be “generally unreliable” and not in accord with Wikipedia’s standards.
That’s not to say that The Daily Mail is entirely banned as a source on the digital encyclopedia. In matters referring to the newspaper itself or its journalists, it can still be quoted as a reliable source.
Among the Wikipedia editors that discussed the partial ban there were dissenting opinions which pointed towards other well-regarded publications that occasionally reported untrue stories, or the fact that there are other media outlets promoting similar types of articles. However, the editors concluded that The Daily Mail was not up to par, based on its “reputation for poor fact checking, sensationalism and flat-out fabrication”. The editors also said a discussion on other such low-quality publications should be had, signaling Wikipedia’s continued fight against fake news and unreliable sources.

The A-type strain of the disease was discovered at a dairy farm in Yeoncheon, less than 50 miles north of the capital, said Kim Kyeong-kyu, deputy minister for food industry policy. Reacting shortly after an outbreak of the O-type strain was confirmed in southeast Korea, the ministry raised the alert status one notch to the maximum.
„We are raising the alert level as foot-and-mouth cases occurred at different parts of the country and a second type of the disease emerged,“ Kim said at a briefing. As of Wednesday, 826 cattle had been culled, the ministry said.
South Korea last raised the country’s foot-and-mouth disease alert status to the highest level in 2010, when the country grappled with its worst-ever outbreak.
Since the first outbreak was discovered on Monday, Korea has taken emergency measures including a nationwide vaccination and a movement control order designed to contain the spread of the virus.
The ministry had re-vaccinated all cattle in the country against the O-type virus, and the country’s livestock would need to be inoculated again against the A-type strain, Kim said.
Oh Soon-min, a senior agriculture ministry official in charge of animal health, said the ministry was seeking to import more vaccine stocks from manufacturers such as Merial as Korea’s inventory of „O+A type“ vaccines – which allow livestock to be vaccinated for both strains at the same time – was in short supply.
„We first have to check the company’s inventory and we are thinking to bring in as many (supplies) as we can,“ he added.
Korea regularly inoculates its cattle and hogs against three types of foot-and-mouth diseases. It has around 3.14 million cattle and 10 million hogs nationwide.
The agriculture ministry is weighing whether or not to vaccinate hogs again, as cases of infection have so far only been found among cattle, said Park Bong-kyun, commissioner of the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.
Korea has also slaughtered 33 million farm birds since late last year as it tries to contain an outbreak of viral bird flu.
