Don't worry about Donald Trump starting a nuclear arms race. Do worry about him starting a trade war with China My review of the football year, 2016

0

NewsHubIn a pattern that may become increasingly familiar, the world has received a jolt in the shape of a tweet from Donald Trump.
“The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability,” the President-Elect tweeted, “until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.”
Coupled with Vladimir Putin’s comments the same day that Russia must “strengthen the military potential” of its nuclear arsenal, it adds to the worry that we may not look back on 2016 as a year of convulsions – in fact, we may not look back on it at all.
But – strange as it may seem when the words “Trump” and “nuclear weapons” appear so closely together in a news story – on this occasion, the worries are somewhat overstated.
Both the nuclear arsenals of the United States and Russia are suffering from outdated equipment, guidance systems and other maintenance issues. Overhauling those problems makes an accidental exchange of nuclear fire less likely and a second strike less likely, too.
The way that Trump described the launch, civil servants believe, is part and parcel of how generals talk about their spending requests in order to expedite favourable decisions from civilian governments. That speaks to one of the other worries about Trump: that he is, for all his bombast, a man with a tendency to take on the opinions of the last person he spoke to and one desperately concerned with saving face and being taken seriously. That he is still tweeting about Hillary Clinton’s popular vote lead and the celebrity entertainers who are giving his inauguration a wide berth speaks to his fragility.
But there’s a risk that the nuclear issue is obscuring a bigger worry about Trump’s presidency: that of increased hostility towards China. The Sino-US relations have not been in great shape for years but Trump’s actions as president-elect have placed the relationship under greater pressure.
The subject of worry and irritation in Beijing today: the appointment of Peter Navarro to head the new White House National Trade Council. Navarro is the China hawk’s China hawk – the Guardian has collected some of his strongest anti-China remarks – and it has analysts nervous that Trump’s presidency will see a trade war erupt between the United States and China.
Although both countries would suffer damage, it is the US that has more to lose than China. That brings you back to the problem with Trump – that is he is both impressionable and hates to be seen as a loser. What he does if he starts a fight he can’t finish with the world’s other superpower is likely to be the question that dominates all others in 2017.
Halfway through another season. Football, like the academic year and the school year, does not stick to the normal calendar, but any road up, here goes the report on the season, so far.
Surprise of the Season This time last year it was Leicester City surprising us all. This time, it is Leicester City – surprising us all. By not playing as stunningly as they did. But they could still surprise us all. Well, we are easily surprised.
Team of the Season The four at the top of the Prem are separated by just a few points. No one looks like drawing ahead. But I think Chelsea,
who were dreadful last season, might do it. They have such a strong spine, with Costa, Hazard and Luiz, all of them at last coming into form.
Worldwide, All-Star, Amazing, Galactic Team of the Season Carlisle United, of course. They’ve lost only one league game all season. They could well rise to glory come May, leaping out of League Two.
Young Players of the Season There seemed to be so many, early doors, about to thrill us all, with massive reputations and price tags, such as Paul Pogba, John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, but they’ve all done little, moving backwards if anything, while poor old Ross Barkley has practically disappeared. What is the reason? Peaked
too early? Weren’t as good as we thought?
Jack Wilshere A young player who did seem to have peaked, thanks partly to always being injured. He got shunted out on loan from Arsenal to Bournemouth – yet he has played regularly and well for them. Could it be that it was the training and environment at Arsenal that somehow exacerbated his injuries?
Manager of the Season When Mourinho arrived at the beginning of the season at Man United, I told everyone within earshot, which means my four granddaughters and the tortoise, that you mark my words, he’ll be gone by Xmas. I’m now predicting gone by Easter. Are you listening, Tortee? Oh, she’s asleep.
Form is temporary, class is for ever . i s one of football’s oldest clichés. I now think it’s bollocks. Look at Jamie Vardy, considered for most of his career to have little class, and then came a miraculous season. Now he appears to be coming back. Football, like life, is a matter of ups and downs. I got that from a Christmas cracker.
Hurrah for England We’re not so rubbish at football after all. The 30 names on the shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or did include one Englishman. Hence dancing in the streets of Leicester. Yes, Wee Jamie was the sole Inglander who made it.
Football Expert of Year Alan Shearer, who else? Usually he gives us his pearls on TV but he graced the radio airwaves when talking to Gary Richardson on the Radio 4 Today programme. Asked about Gareth Southgate getting the England job, Shearer thought and then said: “At this moment in time, we are where we are.”
Commentators’ Clichés
There’s a new one this season which they’re all trying to work in. “Oh, that was a lovely pick-out.” “Pick-out” just means “pass”.
Well Done, Tottingham
Ahead of the game as ever, world leaders in the field. It has been reported that Spurs’ most expensive season ticket in their new stadium will cost £18,000. A bargain. Where else will a fan find such joy for such a small amount of money?
Jok e Which reminds me of an old seaside postcard, one of the vintage saucy ones that local “watch committees” used to ban. It shows a tout outside Wembley Stadium selling tickets. “£10 for a ticket?” exclaims a fan. “I could get a woman for that!” “Yes,” replies the tout, “but not 45 minutes each way and a brass band at half-time.” Note the two period references. Touts have all but disappeared and so have the brass bands who’d march round the pitch at half-time.
Arsena l also done good They have been using performance-enhancing undergarments. What cheaters. It’s to do
with some revolutionary tight, clingy Lycra underpants and vest. The sleeves tend to hang down, covering the arms, which means when the team has elected to play in short sleeves, as decreed by the captain of the day, those using artificial stimulants can be seen to have these dodgy enhancers underneath. There have been protests from diehard Gooners about this break with tradition. Well, they don’t have a lot to do.
Trendy Referees Who’d have thought it? That referees would ever become as cool as geography teachers. Mark Clattenburg has got a tattoo on each wrist, in honour of taking two European finals. I quite expected such outrageous behaviour from him, as he always appeared a flash git – for a referee. But Michael Oliver is a surprise. He looks about 13 but he is 31, younger than many of the players he bosses around. He has suddenly appeared with a fashionable hairstyle. Two lines shaved at the side, tramlines. He’s been ridiculed on social media for having a “Year Seven haircut”.
Most Annoying Advertisement “First Never Follows”. This is for Adidas. But is it true? Firsts have to follow, in order to get ahead, otherwise they’d have no one to get ahead of.
Haircut of the Season God, I nearly forgot. For over 20 years this has been the biggest accolade in football journalism, NS section. Alas, hmm, can’t think of any. Blond highlights have faded, beards are soooo last season. So who can it be? For the first time ever, the judging committee is being forced to award it to a referee. Step forward, Michael Oliver. Now go back and do your homework or you’ll never pass your GCSEs. .

Recovery efforts resume for missing plane with 6 aboard

0

NewsHubCLEVELAND (AP) – Recovery efforts have resumed for a small plane that carried six people and disappeared over Lake Erie near Cleveland’s shores three days ago.
The Cleveland mayor’s office says Sunday that boats are on the lake looking for the plane that vanished after takeoff from a lakeshore airport. There’s been no sign of any wreckage or survivors since the aircraft disappeared Thursday night.
Weather and lake conditions have hampered the search but city officials say Sunday’s conditions are favorable, with 5 mph winds and clear, sunny skies.
The Cleveland Division of Fire, the U. S. Coast Guard and Underwater Marine Contractors have launched boats and dive teams will search the lake.
A beverage distribution company executive was piloting the plane. His wife, their two teenage sons, and two neighbors were aboard.

New details on how Russian hackers may have infiltrated American computer systems

0

NewsHubWe are getting a better idea of how Russian hackers may have infiltrated American computer systems — and how they covered their tracks.
U. S. intelligence agencies believe Russian hacking units often use other people’s computer networks to “hide their malicious actvity.”
Newly-declassified documents show that U. S. investigators suspect that Russian intelligence services have access to compromised computer infrastructure in as many as 60 countries.
According to this joint analysis, U. S. intelligence agencies have been tracking specific Russian signatures or fingerprints of malicious cyber activity for years which led them to focus on one culprit in connection with the cyberattack that affected Democratic party officials.
“It was very clear from Day One that this was Russia,” says Kelly Ward, the executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
U. S. officials do not often release the details of their investigations — but they did Thursday. The release was part of an ongoing effort to pu…
Ward says she and other senior Democratic party officials were notified of the cyberattack on June 14th. But by then it was too late. The hackers had already stolen valuable opposition research for Congressional races and the information was about to show up in Republican ads.
“The material that was leaked was weaponized in a way to affect our most important races at the most important times,” Ward says. “The hackers released the materials and put them on the internet.”
Cybersecurity experts and U. S. officials say the tactic is classic Russian information warfare and it has been used in countries around the world including Ukraine and Turkey. Investigators say with the blessing of Vladimir Putin, Russian intelligence services have worked to develop a playbook of cyber espionage which calls for elaborately planned cyberattacks to leak embarrassing documents or cause other disruptions.
President Obama has ordered a report on the Russian cyberattacks and it is expected to be completed sometime in the next few weeks. U. S. officials tell CBS News that through a combination of forensic evidence and human intelligence, it will reveal new details about the cyberattacks that have yet to come to light.

Small planes collide midair near Dallas, three dead

0

NewsHubMCKINNEY, Texas, Jan. 1 (UPI) — Three people died after two small airplanes collided midair and crashed into a populated area outside Dallas, local officials said.
Authorities have not identified the victims or the cause of the crash, but witnesses said the planes were flying close to the ground, the collision was loud and the debris field was widespread. The Federal Aviation Administration said both aircrafts were flying under visual flight rules and had no contact with air traffic control. The crash happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. Saturday about 30 minutes north of Dallas.
„They were making a turn and one of the planes slid into the other,“ witness Rodney Livermore told NBCDFW. „You heard a loud crash and bang. One of them came straight down. The other one had a little control, but it was coming down. There was no stopping it. “
One of the aircrafts crashed into a storage facility and the other onto a road. No one on the ground was injured. The aircrafts were a Piper PA-28R and a Luscombe and left from Aero Country Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said.

Celebrate South Africa! 01 January 2017, 13:12
I hear the bananas farmed in Ehlanzeni taste so good all year round. Take me to Hazyview in Mpumalanga this holiday and I will get lost in the mystifying spirit of the South African wilderness that is Kruger National Park.
I hear the silent whispers of Southern Right Whales in Hermanus calling my name from the perfect and faultless shores of Walker Bay along the Southern Cape coastline.
I might spend the Day of Goodwill in Tsitsikamma National Park enjoying the sheer splendor of Mother Nature undisturbed. And I might get somewhat sunburnt, as my eyes feast on lush green forests, and my tender feet tickle the unflappable earth of hiking trails found alongside rocky coastal shorelines in Mossel Bay.
Or should I go to Knysna for the first time? I can spend the holiday listening to the fresh sounds of Brownhooded Kingfishers serenading nature with sweet rhythms of festive summer joy.
Or should I go to Groenklof Nature Reserve or Bontebok National Park for a change? I hear the hooves of Bonteboks doing a joyous century-old ritual dance in the Cape Floristic Region.
Some people say Golden Gate Highlands Park in Free State Province is the place to be this December. Others say the Basotho Cultural Village in QwaQwa National Park is the place to see and experience Basotho culture. Maybe I will go to Ash River and try my hand at white-water river rafting for once.
I might set up camp in Addo National Park in the Eastern Cape, and listen to the majestic roars of Transvaal lions at night, or watch beautiful antelopes striding scenic landscapes in the South African savannahs.
Perhaps I will go fishing in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains or go tiger fishing at Jozini Dam in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Or I will go surfing at Llandudno and feel Cape Peninsula waves splashing marine life on me.
You can feel the spirit of South Africa in the air across all nine provinces. You can breathe the spirit of South Africa in Gauteng. You can taste the spirit of South Africa in the land that is Jozi.
Jozi is the absolute personification of the South African spirit: Jozi has drama, excitement, fun, loud music, love, passion, heartbreak, money, fast rides, cheap rides, designer wear, cheap clothes, tall buildings, big buildings, flashy buildings, old buildings.
See, Jozi has it all.
Jozi is the living embodiment of the culturally diverse South African dream. Jozi oozes with life in full unadulterated form and accommodates languages you cannot understand all the time.
But all who reside in Jozi understand one another remarkably well. That is the beauty of living the South African dream in Jozi.
Would Jozi be Jozi if it were in East London or Polokwane though?
What if I have a night on the town in Jozi to celebrate New Year’s Eve? What if I spend the night in Melville gorging on meaty pizzas and tasty latte macchiatos or spicy vegetarian dishes and double cream strawberry milkshakes?
I can feel the salty liveliness of Melville tickling my pleasure-seeking soul again. Maybe I will wear my pointy dancing shoes on December 31 and dance this one and only 2016 away.
What if I went to Soweto for the night? Will it feel like Soweto does on a sunny Sunday afternoon in November? Will the Chisa Nyama chill spots have succulent New Year flavors to savor all night long?
What if I do Braamfontein this time around? Will that yuppie funkiness of Braamfontein live up to the hype this December and offer hedonistic hipsters from Jozi a night to remember?
Perhaps I will cross Nelson Mandela Bridge and go to Newtown for the night. There I will take my final selfies for 2017 in the spatial theatre of dreams that Newtown is.
You can afford to dream big in Jozi and flourish from the energy and spirit of South Africa.

Two countries, two airlines, two apparently drunk pilots

0

NewsHubTwo countries, two airlines, two apparently drunk pilots While pilots attempting to fly commercial planes after having consumed alcohol or drugs is not unknown, two pilots; one in Indonesia and one in Canada appeared to be extremely intoxicated before attempting to fly aircraft filled with passengers. Purna seemed to have a lot of difficulty when he went through security. His allegedly drunken state was so obvious, a passenger who had already cleared security began filming him. The video was later uploaded on YouTube. The video shows the pilot drop the hat he is holding in his hand while he is entering the security area. He can then be seen staggering as he walks through the scanner. He then, with some difficulty, walks over to the conveyor belt and picks up his bag. As soon as he lifts the bag up, some of the contents fall on the floor. Security officers pick the items up while Purna can be seen helping them put the items back into the bag. While putting things back in the bag, he puts his sunglasses in his mouth. The pilot then drops his hat again and picks it up. As he is leaving the area, the glasses in his mouth drop to the floor and break. A security guard can be seen picking up the broken parts and handing them to the pilot. The airline, owned by Indonesia’s national carrier, Garuda, The plane took off an hour later with another pilot although some of the 194 passengers cancelled their flight. At least Purna managed to remain conscious, unlike a pilot for the Canadian airline, Sunwing. A flight was scheduled to take off Saturday morning from Calgary to Cancun with stops in Regina and Winnipeg. When the co-pilot went into the cockpit, he found the pilot appearing to be drunk while doing his pre-flight preparation. The co-pilot notified the airlines and when the gate crew boarded the aircraft they found the pilot sitting in his seat, slumped over the controls. Calgary police were called and the pilot was arrested. His name was not released but he was identified as a 37-year-old Slovakian who was in Canada on a work visa. The pilot has been charged with having the care and control of an aircraft while impaired and having the care and control over an aircraft with a blood alcohol level exceeding 0.08. Further charges may be laid by Transport Canada. Stacey did note while this is serious, the likelihood of a pilot being able to take off while drunk is remote due to the checks and balances in place and the fact they are not alone in the cockpit. But in the Indonesia incident, it appeared it was some of the passengers and not fellow crew members or airport workers who prevented the pilot from flying. The scheduled flight to Cancun took off later with another pilot. The first incident happened Wednesday. An Airbus A320, owned by the Indonesian budget airline Citilink, was scheduled to fly from Surabaya, Indonesia to Jakarta. The pilot, identified as 32-year-old Tekad Purna, went into the plane and made an announcement from the cockpit. His words were slurred and some passengers, believing he was drunk, managed to leave the aircraft and report him. Purna seemed to have a lot of difficulty when he went through security. But later Citilink’s president, Albert Burhan, announced both he and the airline’s production director were resigning over the incident. The pilot was fired. Tourist ferry catches fire, killing dozens in Indonesia

0

NewsHubJAKARTA, Indonesia – At least 23 people were killed and 17 others were missing after a ferry caught fire Sunday off the coast of Indonesia’s capital, officials said.
The vessel was carrying more than 230 people from Jakarta’s port of Muara Angke to Tidung, a resort island in the Kepulauan Seribu chain, when it caught fire, officials said. Most of the passengers were Indonesians celebrating the New Year’s holiday, according to local media reports.
Seply Madreta, an official from the local Disaster Mitigation Agency, said the fire gutted around half the ship. He said that about 22 injured victims were rushed to hospitals, and that 23 bodies had been recovered.
A search involving around 10 ships was underway to find those who were missing, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement.
Witnesses told MetroTV that the fire broke out about 15 minutes after the ship left Muara Angke.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear. Some passengers told local media that they first saw smoke coming from the ferry’s engine.
TV footage showed people in the water with the ferry in flames in the background. A woman in the water can be heard screaming “Ya Allah! Ya Allah!” or “Oh God! Oh God!”
Another woman told the TV station that she and other passengers were rescued by a small boat.
Ferry accidents are common in Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelagic nation, with more than 17,000 islands. Many accidents are blamed on lax regulation of boat services.

Santa Claus hat-wearing terrorist hunted in Turkey after nightclub attack kills dozens

0

NewsHubLast Updated Jan 1, 2017 9:26 AM EST
CCTV footage shows that the assailant wore the Christmas hat for part of the attack, which unfolded despite increased security measures.
The footage, obtained by AP from Haberturk newspaper, shows the male assailant dressed in black and carrying a backpack as he shoots down a police officer outside the Reina nightclub.
Footage taken by a different camera shows him inside the swanky club in Istanbul’s Ortakoy neighborhood wearing different clothes and a Santa Claus hat.
At least 35 people were killed and 40 wounded when an assailant opened fire at a popular night club on New Year’s
Turkey’s prime minister denied news reports claiming the gunman wore a Santa Claus outfit.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters Sunday: “There is no truth to this. He is an armed terrorist as we know it.”
The prime minister also said after visiting the wounded in a hospital that the assailant attacked security personnel outside the club before shooting randomly inside.
Yildirim says the attacker left a gun inside the venue and escaped by “taking advantage of the chaos” that ensued.
He said three of the wounded remain in critical condition.
Turkey’s Minister of Family and Social Policies said foreigners are among the wounded in the attack.
Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya said: “There are many different nationalities, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon, Libya and citizens of other nations.”
A U. S. State Department spokesperson told CBS News that they were not aware of any U. S. citizen deaths in the attack.
The prime minister vowed to keep fighting terror organizations, but notes that, “The terror that happens here today may happen in another country in the world tomorrow.”
Reina owner Mehmet Kocarslan, interviewed by the private Dogan news agency, said police had boosted security measures in the upscale neighborhood of Ortakoy and its vicinity.
The measures included tents at key locations with a 24-hour police presence and complementary efforts by the coast guard at sea.
“Despite all these precautions by police forces, unfortunately this painful event took place. We don’t know what to say,” he added. “We are at the point where all words end.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vehemently condemned “the terror attack in Istanbul’s Ortakoy neighborhood in the first hours of 2017” and offered condolences for those who lost their lives, including “foreign guests.”
The attacker, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside Istanbul’s popular Reina club at around 1:15 a.m. before entering and firing on people partying inside, Gov. Vasip Sahin said.
“Unfortunately (he) rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Sahin told reporters.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and authorities did not name any suspects. The bloodiest attacks that Turkey endured in 2016 were the work of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ISIS ) or Kurdish militants.
Turkey is a member of NATO and a partner in the U. S.-led coalition against ISIS. The country is also facing renewed conflict with Kurdish rebels in the southeast, and across the border in Syria and Iraq.
Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the attacker has not been identified and is still at large. “Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing he will be caught in a short period of time,” he said.
Private NTV news channel said the assailant entered the upscale nightclub, on the shores of the Bosporus, on the European side of the city, dressed in a Santa Claus outfit. The minister said the lone attacker was believed to have left the club wearing different clothing.
At least 15 of the dead were foreign nationals, Soylu said, without providing information on their nationalities. Five of the victims were identified as Turkish nationals while authorities were still trying to identify the rest. At least 69 people were being treated in hospitals, four in serious condition, Soylu said.
Three or four of the Turkish victims may have been employees at the nightclub, he said.
“This was a massacre, a truly inhuman savagery,” Soylu said.
Some customers jumped into the waters of the Bosporus to escape the attack, the NTV report said.
Mehmet Dag, 22, was passing by the club and saw the suspect shoot at a police officer and a bystander. He said the suspect then targeted security, gunning them down and entering the club. “Once he went in, we don’t know what happened. There were gun sounds, and after two minutes the sound of an explosion.”
IPhone footage filmed by Dag and obtained by The Associated Press showed a police officer lying on the ground outside the club, and then a woman. Dag told the woman, who was lying on the floor face down in a pool of blood, “my sister, you will get better.” He called for an ambulance. Footage showed ambulances and the lights of an Istanbul bridge when the sound of gunfire rang out inside the club.
Sinem Uyanik was inside the club with her husband, who was wounded in the attack.
“Before I could understand what was happening, my husband fell on top me,” she said outside Istanbul’s Sisli Etfal Hospital. “I had to lift several bodies from on top of me before I could get out. It was frightening.” Her husband was not in serious condition despite sustaining three wounds.
The nightclub area remained sealed off on Sunday morning.
Heavily armed police blocked the snowy street in front of the nightclub where the entrance was covered with blue plastic sheeting below a Turkish flag. Police patrolled the Asian side of the Bosporus on the other side of the club.
Crime scene investigators were seen inside the club searching through piles of mingled chairs, tables and pieces of clothing left behind during the panic among the guests.
And there were emotional scenes in front of a city morgue where those shot dead were brought for identification. Some relatives cried out and fell to the ground as they apparently learned the fate of their loved ones.
Major attacks carried out by ISIS or Kurdish militants killed more than 180 people in Istanbul and Ankara alone in 2016.
On Dec. 10, a double bomb attack outside a soccer stadium near the Reina nightclub killed 45 people and wounded some 150 others. The attack was claimed by Turkey-based Kurdish militant group, the Kurdish Freedom Falcons.
Russia will hold a funeral Thursday for Andrey Karlov, the country’s murdered ambassador to Turkey. Reports say the Turkish police officer who sh…
Nine days later, an off-duty Turkish riot policeman assassinated Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov at a photo exhibition in the capital, Ankara. The government has suggested that a movement led by U. S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind the killing – an accusation the cleric has denied.
“Turkey continues its combat against terror and is absolutely determined to do whatever is necessary in the region to ensure its citizens safety and peace,” said President Erdogan in a written statement Sunday.
The nightclub attack drew quick condemnation from the West and Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his Turkish counterpart a telegram of condolences, saying “it is hard to imagine a more cynical crime than killing innocent people during New Year celebrations.”
“However, terrorists don’t share moral values. Our common duty is to combat terrorists’ aggression,” Putin said.
The White House condemned what it called a “horrific terrorist attack” and offered U. S. help to Turkey.
