Qualcomm strikes back, tries to get iPhones banned in China

0

In its latest lawsuit against Apple, Qualcomm is trying to get the Chinese government to ban the sales and production of iPhone in the country on charge of intellectual property infringement.
The ongoing legal battle between Apple and Qualcomm is taking quite a heavy toll on the silicon maker’s finances but the company is not backing down from the fight. In its latest strike, Qualcomm is trying to get the sales and manufacture of iPhones banned in China.
As Bloomberg reports, Qualcomm’s beef with the iPhone manufacturer this time seems to concern the infringement of three patents, which it claims are not essential to industry standards. Companies like Qualcomm are legally obligated to license patents which are believed to be essential at fair prices and while Qualcomm has already landed under hot water for refusing to do so in some cases, if the patents are question are, indeed, found to be non-essential, the company can not only refuse to license them to Apple but can also set higher prices for their use.
The ban of iPhones the country is believed to be unlikely but any action against Apple in China could have far more devastating consequences than the chipmaker’s similar appeal in the US. While an injunction against sales would obviously hurt the company’s bottom line, the majority of iPhones are also manufactured in China, meaning a ban on production could dry up the company’s supply chain and cause shortages worldwide.
Apple dismissed the charges in relation to these patents, which deal with power management and Force Touch, as ‚meritless‘ and suggested Qualcomm was deliberately playing a game, saying,
This episode is the latest in a line of lawsuits filed by both companies against each other, beginning with Apple accusing the silicon maker of abusing its dominant position as the supplier of smartphone modems to gain unfair terms. Indeed, regulators in South Korea, Taiwan and China have already fined Qualcomm over similar claims. Qualcomm soon replied with claims of patent infringement, with this pattern replicating itself around the globe.

Klapisch: Tanaka, Yankees come up short against Astros

0

Astros ride seven shutout innings from ace Keuchel to take Game 1 of ALCS
HOUSTON – The Yankees ran through all the advanced analytics preparing for the League Championship Series, broke down the Astros’ lineup with the help of scouting reports, video and all the sabermetrics they could digest. And still, they knew their chances of beating the Astros in Game 1 required a little luck, too.
They needed Dallas Keuchel to be Corey Kluber – an ace who suddenly loses his stuff in October. Big ask, right? Maybe too big. The Yankees never broke through on Keuchel as they did against Kluber in the Division Series and instead fell just short in a 2-1 loss on Friday.
It was an important opening salvo for Houston, although not a catastrophic one for the Bombers. All they have to do is split the first two games at Minute Maid Park and then go to work on the back end of the Astros’ rotation in Games 3-4-5 at the Stadium this week. But that means beating Justin Verlander Saturday afternoon, which is another way of saying the Yankees need Luis Severino to throw another masterpiece.
One thing is certain, though: If Game 1 served as any kind of lesson, it’s that the Astros are as good as advertised this month. Maybe better. Keuchel, who came into the game with a career 1.41 ERA against the Bombers, the best regular-season mark in the last 60 years against them with a six-start minimum, threw seven shutout innings and allowed only four hits.
“He didn’t make a single mistake,” said Starlin Castro. “You went up looking for something over the plate, but everything was on the corners. He didn’t given us anything to hit.”
Even before taking the mound, Keuchel had stripped the Yankees of their most cherished weapon – the long ball. He’d hadn’t surrendered a home run to the Bombers in 188 at-bats. There were 25 more at-bats in Game 1 with the same result: no HRs, only 10 strikeouts and plenty of soft outs.
So how did the Yankees lose this one? Because Greg Bird’s solo HR off Ken Giles with two outs in the ninth was too little, too late. And because Masahiro Tanaka was only a rung or two below Keuchel. He pitched well enough to win on most nights – just not this one.
And here’s one more what-if. Had Bird been blessed with even half the quickness on the bases as he has with the bat, the Yankees might’ve broken through on Keuchel in the fifth. That might’ve changed everything. As it turned out the game’s defining moment occurred moments after Bird was thrown out trying to score from second on Aaron Judge’s two-out single to left.
The Yankees were trailing, 2-0, but finally stringing together good at-bats against Keuchel. Judge’s line drive would’ve paid a dividend – except that Bird was doomed. Chugging along on his surgically repaired foot, Bird was a half-second late as Marwin Gonzalez delivered a strike to a waiting Brian McCann.
“If (Bird) is 10 percent faster, five percent faster, he scores,” Joe Girardi said. “It’s just the speed he has. We had a shot. If Bird’s safe maybe we get to (Keuchel) in that inning. But he wasn’t.”
“In our ballpark you never concede a run on a base hit to left,” Astros manager A. J. Hinch added. “The depth that (Gonzalez) plays at is just shallow enough to where if you’re not in an elite runner it’s hard to score on a base hit right at the guy.”
The play was close enough for Girardi to challenge the call by home plate umpire Chad Fairchild. But to no avail; Bird’s foot was still in the air when McCann the tag. And honest guy that Bird is, he said Girardi had wasted his breath.
“My first thought is that I was out,” said Bird, who had the Yankees’ lone quality at-bat over the last four innings, that pretty blast in the ninth. Otherwise, the Bombers were forced to concede they never found the antidote to Keuchel’s soft touch, late movement in the strike zone and ability to command both sides of the plate.
Judge explained it by recounting a batting practice conversation with McCann, who told him, “(Keuchel) never makes me move my glove. Wherever I set up, that’s where he throws the ball.”
And as the Yankees slugger pointed out, “When you’re always behind in the count, 0-1,0-2 it’s hard to get a good hack. Keuchel never gives you a chance to load up like when you’re up 3-1. You have to respect what a good pitcher he is.”
This means the Yankees turn a hopeful gaze toward Severino and his 98-mph fastball. The Yankees will be in trouble in the ALCS if they go home 0-2 although for now they’re not particularly stressed. They mostly shut down the American League’s No. 1 offense, nearly beat their ace and forced Giles, the closer, into a five-out save.
And don’t forget the aftereffect of the Division Series. The Yankees no longer fear anyone, not the Indians, and to hear the talk in the postgame clubhouse, not the Astros, either. The Bombers are fully expecting to take Game 2. We’ll soon see.

Blizzard is suing an alleged Overwatch clone in China

0

Blizzard and its Chinese operator for Overwatch are taking Heroes of Warfare, a mobile game that looks eerily similar to Blizzard’s own team-based shooter, to court in China over copyright concerns.
When you have a game as popular as Overwatch, it’s to be expected that someone will try and copy the winning formula for their own product. Though, one game may have taken it a little too far, with similarities far too many and familiar to forgive.
The developers of Heroes of Warfare are being taken to court by Blizzard and NetEase, the company’s Chinese operator for Overwatch. The game, they argue, is a clone of Overwatch and infringes upon Blizzard’s intellectual property, with a demand for both an apology and the restitution for any financial damages. The game is currently available on Apple’s App Sore and Blizzard is also petitioning the Cupertino-based company to remove it.
Screenshots of the game from Hachima and My Game New Flash shows character designs being strikingly similar to some of the existing Overwatch heroes, such as Widowmaker, Reinhardt and Winston. While the similarities in hero design are copious by themselves, the level design, in-game HUD and UI also feature striking similarities to their counterparts in Overwatch.

T-Mobile kills unlimited data usage when traveling to Canada and Mexico

0

T-Mobile is a carrier that rarely takes away a perk that it introduced, but it looks like this upcoming November, the carrier will remove the unlimited data feature on its Mobile Without Borders perk.
T-Mobile has been known over the past few years to introduce new Un-carrier movements that provide benefits to the customer, differentiating itself from the competition. However, it looks like the wireless carrier will be falling in line, as it is downgrading one of its benefits that it started nearly two years ago called Mobile Without Borders.
The idea of Mobile Without Borders is to allow those on a valid T-Mobile plan to take advantage of calling, texting, and using data in Canada and Mexico without restrictions. This means that you simply use your plan in these countries as if you were in your home territory in the United States. While the plan previously accommodated for unlimited data, now the carrier will be limiting that to just 5GB. If you pass your 5GB allotment, you’ll be throttled, with speeds restricted, allowing up to just 128kbps, or 256kbps, if on the T-Mobile ONE Plus plan.
T-Mobile states that less than one percent of its customers that use Mobile Without Borders go over 5GB. While this is certainly surprising and may impact some users, the changes won’t be immediate and will start instead on November 12.

Polska elektrownia atomowa: Kluczowa decyzja w przyszłym roku?

0

Polska siłownia jądrowa to wciąż melodia przyszłości.
Kluczem do dokładniejszego określenia, kiedy zakład mógłby powstać, byłoby rozpisanie przetargu. Oczywiście poprzedzić go musi odpowiednia decyzja rządu.
Z jednej strony grożą nam niedobory energii, z drugiej wzrost jej cen.
Aby temu przeciwdziałać, musiałyby powstać siłownie szczytowo-pompowe, a to oznaczałoby gigantyczne wydatki – podkreśla rzecznik.

After earlier ambiguous stance, Koike flatly denies Kibo no To plans to form coalition with LDP

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike, leader of Kibo no To (Party of Hope), has denied that her party will join a ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party after the Oct. 22 general election.
Koike had left open the possibility of such a coalition, but apparently shifted her ambiguous stance in the face of recent media polls suggesting her party is unlikely to win as much support from voters as earlier expected.
Asked about the possibility of her party launching a coalition government with the LDP, the popular governor told reporters Friday that there was “none at all.”
Nevertheless, Koike did suggest that her party could still link up with the LDP on specific issues, including revising the pacifist Constitution and national security.
“Kibo no To will examine the pros and cons of cooperation on each issue so that it can realize its policy pledges,” she said.
The ruling party’s reported lead in the Lower House race is “primarily because opposition parties are divided,” Koike said.
“Anyways, the campaign has only just begun, and we will promote our policies robustly,” she added.

Cryptocurrency mining bigger problem than expected, affects 500 million PCs

0

Websites stealthily using the CPU resources of visitors could be a much larger problem than expected, with a report suggesting as many as 500 million PCs visit sites that use such tools.
The Pirate Bay became the most prominent example of a website choosing to hijack visitors‘ PCs to mine for cryptocurrency last month – and again this week – but it’s not the only site to do so. In fact, according to a new report, the torrent site has now inspired a large swathe of websites with an aggregate audience of 500 million PCs to similarly exploit their user base without permission.
Adguard reports that in just the few weeks since The Pirate Bay launched its ‚test‘ program for stealthily mining cryptocurrency, 2.2% of the top 100,000 websites according to Alexa are now following suit. Given their high traffic range, these 220 websites can affect 500 million people altogether.
Estimates suggest that the scheme has already earned these websites a total of $43,000 in the last three weeks, while the possible monthly earnings of The Pirate Bay alone using such a scheme are estimated to come to $12,000.
Obtaining users‘ permission for the use of such scripts on the site has become the subject of much debate on the matter, with the ethical impact of increasing visitors‘ power usage at the centre of such concerns. CoinHive, one of the two most popular script providers for cryptocurrency mining – and the one currently being used by TPB – has come down hard on sites that use its script without informing users or giving them a means of opting-out. The company issued the following statement on the matter:
As for the sites which are most likely to employ such tactics, Adguard points to the sketchier corners of the internet as being the most vulnerable, including pornographic websites, torrent search sites and those hosting pirated content. Sites which encourage users to park on the web page, such as those with videos, are best equipped to monetise such tools.
While cryptocurrency mining could have evolved as a solution to the intrusiveness of ads and the financial struggles of websites due to the subsequent rise of adblockers, such tools have now fallen victim to the same problem. Adblocking extensions have evolved and are now starting to also block such requests to the CPU and until the issue of consent is not fully tackled, as CoinHive itself admits, such measures are likely to remain in place.
