Kidnapped U. S.-Canadian couple, three children freed in Pakistan

0

A kidnapped U. S.-Canadian couple and their three children born in captivity have been freed in Pakistan, nearly five years after the couple was abducted in neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistani and U. S. officials said on Thursday.
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – A kidnapped U. S.-Canadian couple and their three children born in captivity have been freed in Pakistan, nearly five years after the couple was abducted in neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistani and U. S. officials said on Thursday.
American Caitlan Coleman and her Canadian husband Joshua Boyle were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012 by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network, which the United States has long accused Pakistan of failing to fight.
U. S. President Donald Trump, who has been highly critical of Islamabad, praised Pakistan’s cooperation with the U. S. government over the freeing of the hostages, saying it represented “a positive moment” for U. S.-Pakistan relations.
“The Pakistani government’s cooperation is a sign that it is honoring America’s wishes for it to do more to provide security in the region,” Trump said in a statement.
The Pakistani army and U. S. government statements offered no details about the operation itself.
The Pakistani army said its forces “recovered” the hostages after acting on U. S. intelligence about their passage into Pakistan from Afghanistan. A U. S. State Department statement used the word “rescue” to describe efforts by the U. S. and Pakistani governments to secure the hostages’ release.
Coleman was pregnant at the time she was kidnapped, and a video released by the Taliban in December showed two sons born while she and her husband were hostages.
Thursday’s statements from Islamabad and Washington were the first mention of a third child.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland asked for respect for the family’s privacy and thanked the governments of the United States, Pakistan and Afghanistan for their efforts to win the hostages’ release.
“Joshua, Caitlan, their children and the Boyle and Coleman families have endured a horrible ordeal over the past five years. We stand ready to support them as they begin their healing journey,” Freeland said.
The Pakistani effort came as Pakistan and the United States, uneasy allies in fighting Taliban and other Islamist extremists in the region, are experiencing one of the worst lows in their relations.
In recent days, senior U. S. officials have been more pointed about Islamabad’s alleged ties to militant groups, who are battling against U. S. and U. S.-backed forces in neighboring Afghanistan.
The United States has repeatedly accused Pakistan of granting safe haven to militants fighting a 16-year-old war in Afghanistan, further complicating a drawn out conflict that the U. S. military has described as a stalemate between the Taliban and U. S.-backed Afghan government forces.
Last week, U. S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the United States would try “one more time” to work with Pakistan in Afghanistan before Trump would “take whatever steps are necessary” to change Pakistan’s behavior.
Pakistan touted the success of the operation as proof of the strength of the alliance.
“The success underscores the importance of timely intelligence sharing and Pakistan’s continued commitment toward fighting this menace through cooperation between two forces against a common enemy,” the Pakistani army statement said.
U. S. intelligence agencies had been tracking the hostages and on Wednesday shared that the family had been moved to Pakistan through Kurram tribal area border, the army said. No other details were immediately available.
U. S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Trump’s strategy in the region recognized “the important role Pakistan needs to play to bring stability and ultimately peace to the region.”
“The United States is hopeful that Pakistan’s actions will further a U. S.-Pakistan relationship marked by growing commitments to counterterrorism operations and stronger ties in all other respects,” Tillerson said.

Microsoft Windows 10 update pushes new app minus details

0

Usually when you get an update to your computer, you want to know what it does. However, a new update being pushed live from the servers offers up a mysterious Photos app with no details whatsoever.
A mysterious new Windows 10 Photos app add-on has started appearing on users‘ computers, being pushed from the update servers with little explanation on what exactly the app does. Needless to say, users are not responding well and rating down the app on the Windows Store.
The app, called Photos Add-on, was apparently delivered through an October 10 update, according to ZDNet, although Store user comments show the app was available as early as October 1. About the only thing that is known about it is that the app is compatible with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (release 14393) and later.
Comments on the store seem to indicate that the app is added to your system without permission, which has cause many users to immediately run to the Store page for the app and grade it out as one star. However, ZDNet testing shows that the app doesn’t do much, as it is just an update to the Windows 10 built-in Photos App.
The app is actually called Photos. DLC Main and is listed under Apps & Features. It weighs in at only 141MB.
The app was tracked back to a promise of an app add-ons from a Windows 10 blog post from April 2016 for insider preview build 14328. A source told ZDNet that the app is part of an „architectural change“ that allows Microsoft to provide new content updates and functionality for the Photos app.
The new app is already triggering previously unseen pop-ups in the builds of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update when the Photos app is opened.
The app apparently is no big deal, but the lack of any explanation is what has users frustrated the most.

Sports teams are ditching Trump hotels

0

Professional teams across four major sports leagues that sometimes stayed in Trump hotels are apparently now finding different lodging while on the road,…
Professional teams across four major sports leagues that sometimes stayed in Trump hotels are apparently now finding different lodging while on the road, according to a report on Thursday.
An investigation by the Washington Post found that none of the 105 teams that responded from the total of 123 franchises from the National Basketball Association, the National Football League, the National Hockey League or Major League Baseball would confirm that it stays at a Trump-branded property while on the road.
Of the teams that responded, 18 declined to comment and 71 indicated that they hadn’t stayed at Trump hotels in recent years. A total of 17 confirmed a visit to a Trump property within the past seven years, but had stopped booking rooms after Trump launched his run for the White House in June 2015.
The NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA teams from that confirmed Trump hotel stays, all but one said they’re no longer checking into Trump’s hotels while traveling the country for road games.
Some of the franchises said the reason for the change had nothing to do with politics, but was rather due to the logistical challenges of getting in and out of hotels during their stay — specifically lower Manhattan to stay at the Trump Soho hotel. But some coaches and players have made it clear that Trump’s politics definitely factors into their decision to stay elsewhere.
“The president has seemingly made a point of dividing us as best he can,” Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr told the newspaper. “He continually offends people, and so people don’t want to stay at his hotel. It’s pretty simple.”
On Wednesday, President Trump said former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick should’ve been suspended for kneeling during the national anthem, his latest public foray into sports and the ongoing protests against racial inequality.
Trump last month disinvited the Golden State Warriors to the White House after guard Stephen Curry, LeBron James and other pro athletes condemned Trump’s comment during a political rally in Alabama calling for NFL owners to fire any “son of a bitch” who kneeled during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Just two days earlier, James called Trump a “bum” for rescinding the invite .
The Trump Organization declined requests for comment, the Washington Post reports, but White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump’s attacks on sports teams had nothing to do with losing professional athletes as customers.
“The president has repeatedly said he doesn’t care about his business, he cares about the country,” Sanders wrote the newspaper in an email. “The president’s position on athletes standing for the National Anthem is about respecting the flag and the men and women of the military who sacrifice to defend it and nothing else.”
NBA teams paid about $20,000 per night for rooms and food at hotels like Trump Soho, according to one team’s estimate, the newspaper reports.
Jabari Parker, one of the young stars on the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, a team that stopped staying at Trump hotels after 2015-16, said the switch was definitely due to politics.
“I don’t care what haters think — I’m proud to not stay in Trump hotels,” the Bucks forward told the Sporting News in November . “I don’t support someone who endorses hate on other people. He ran his campaign on hate. He’s attacked everything that I am and believe. I was named by a Muslim man. My mother didn’t get her citizenship until much later in life. She is basically an immigrant because she came from Tonga. She was paid less because she was a woman.”

The best free photo editor 2017

0

Advanced photo editing software that will make your pictures look amazing, and doesn’t cost a penny.
Like most of us, you likely have dozens, if not hundreds of pictures stored on your phone or your camera ’s SD card. But are you making the most of them? Most of them probably look decent but, with a little fine-tuning, you can transform them into something amazing that you won’t be able to wait to share online, or even frame on your wall.
Whether you’re looking for a total Photoshop alternative that gives you fine control over every miniscule detail of your photos, or a basic Instagram-style photo editor that offers a range of one-click filters, you’ll find something interesting here.
If you’re already happy with the general look of your photos and just want to tweak them a little before sharing them, a simple editor that allows you to resize, crop and apply filters will be ideal. Many of these have social media sharing built in, removing the hassle of uploading your snaps manually later. They also have the added benefit of being easier to use.
If you’re planning to print your work, you’ll be better off considering a more nuanced photo editor that will give you the fine control you need to make your photos look perfect, even at high resolutions.
Now, let’s dive into our list of the best free photo editors.
A free photo editor that’s a worthy rival to premium software
The first thing that’s gonna be on a lot of people’s mind immediately is going to be ‘give me a good free alternative to Photoshop.’ GIMP (also known as the GNU Image Manipulation Program) is exactly that. It is, hands down, the most robust free photo editor on the market, and it’s crammed with wonderful tools that perfectly match those you’d find in premium software, and more are being added every day.
GIMP’s interface will be instantly familiar if you have ever used Photoshop – especially if you select the single-window mode, which lays out all its toolbars and canvases in an Adobe-style layout.
The photo editing toolkit is breathtaking, and features layers, masks, curves, and levels. You can eliminate flaws easily with the excellent clone stamp and healing tools, create custom brushes, apply perspective changes, and apply changes to isolated areas with smart selection tools.
GIMP is an open source project, and its community of users and developers have created a huge collection of plugins to extend its utility even further. Many of these come pre-installed, and you can download more from the official glossary. If that’s not enough, you can even install Photoshop plugins too.
This combination of power and flexibility make GIMP the best free photo editor you can download – whether you’re using Windows, macOS or Linux.
Fine manual controls packaged in an accessible interface
More is not, believe it or not, always better. Paint. NET ’s simplicity is one of its main selling points; it’s a quick, easy to operate free photo editor that’s ideal for trivial tasks that don’t necessarily justify the sheer power of GIMP.
Don’t let the name fool you, though. This isn’t just a cheap copy of Microsoft’s ultra-basic Paint – even if it was originally meant to replace it. It’s a proper photo editor, just one that lands on the basic side of the curve.
Paint. NET’s interface will remind you of its namesake, but over the years, they’ve added advanced editing tools like layers, an undo history, a ton of filters, myriad community-created plugins, and a brilliant 3D rotate/zoom function that’s handy for recomposing images.
It might not have every feature you can dream of, but if your machine is a little underpowered we can’t think of a better choice.
A superb photo editor that takes many of its cues from Photoshop
Photo Pos Pro isn’t as well known as Paint.net and GIMP, but it’s another top-quality free photo editor that’s packed with advanced image-enhancing tools.
Its interface is smarter and more accessible than GIMP’s array of menus and toolbars, with everything arranged in a logical and consistent way. If it’s still too intimidating, there’s also an optional ’novice‘ layout that resembles Fotor’s filter-based approach. The choice is yours.
The ‚expert‘ layout offers both layers and layer masks for sophisticated editing, as well as tools for adjusting curves and levels manually. You can still access the one-click filters via the main menu, but the focus is much more on fine editing.
Photo Pos Pro also includes a clone brush for erasing unwanted blemishes, and there’s extra support for batch-editing and scripts to help you save time when refining a whole folder of photos.
The free edition of Photo Pos Pro only has one drawback: files can only be saved at a maximum resolution of 1,024 x 2,014 pixels, which might be too small if you’re planning to have them printed professionally. If you want to remove this restriction, Photo Pos Pro Premium is available for a license free of £24.50, US$24.90, AU$41.89.
Advanced tools and filters that are easy for beginners to master
PhotoScape might look like a rather simple free photo editor, but take a look at its main menu and you’ll find a wealth of features: raw conversion, photo splitting and merging, animated GIF creation, and even a rather odd (but useful) function with which you can print lined, graph or sheet music paper.
The meat, of course, is in the photo editing. PhotoScape’s interface is among the most esoteric of all the apps we’ve looked at here, with tools grouped into pages in odd configurations. It certainly doesn’t attempt to ape Photoshop, and includes fewer features.
We’d definitely point this towards the beginner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get some solid results. PhotoScape’s filters are functional and not at all beginner-like, so it’s if good choice if you need to quickly level, sharpen or add mild filtering to pictures in a snap.
One-click photo enhancement tools and advanced manual controls
Fotor is more a photo enhancer than a full-fat manual editing tool. If there’s specific area of retouching you need doing with, say, the clone brush or healing tool, you’re out of luck. However, if your needs are simple, its stack of high-end filters that really do shine.
There’s a foolproof tilt-shift tool, for example, and a raft of vintage and vibrant colour tweaks, all easily accessed through Fotor’s clever menu system. You can manually alter your own curves and levels, too, but without the complexity of high-end tools.
Fotor’s most brilliant function, and one that’s sorely lacking in many photo editing packages, is its batch processing tool – feed it a pile of pics and it’ll filter the lot of them in one go, perfect if you have a memory card full of holiday snaps and need to cover up the results of a dodgy camera or shaky hand.

FBI Reviews Allegations Of Puerto Rican Officials Withholding Hurricane Relief

Residents across the island claim local officials have withheld needed FEMA supplies Residents across the island claim local officials have withheld needed FEMA supplies.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Puerto Rico received multiple allegations from residents across the island who say local officials in the territory have withheld needed FEMA supplies.
“People call us and tell us some misappropriation of some goods and supplies by supposedly politicians, not necessarily mayors, but people that work for the mayors in certain towns,” FBI Special Agent Carlos Osorio told The Daily Caller Wednesday.
Osorio explained, “They’re supposedly withholding these goods and these supplies and instead of handing them out to people who really need them, [there are claims] that [local officials] are assigning them to their buddies first–people that have voted for them or people that contributed to their campaigns or what not.”
He added, “So what we’re doing is looking into these allegations. That I can tell you is happening. Again, I cannot say that we have any ongoing investigation. We’re just corroborating these allegations.”

Equifax takes down web page after reports of new hack

Equifax Inc said on Thursday it has taken one of its customer help web pages offline as its security team looks into reports of another potential cyber breach at the credit reporting company, which recently disclosed a hack that compromised the sensitive information of 145.5 million people.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Equifax Inc said on Thursday it has taken one of its customer help web pages offline as its security team looks into reports of another potential cyber breach at the credit reporting company, which recently disclosed a hack that compromised the sensitive information of 145.5 million people.
The move came after an independent security analyst on Wednesday found part of Equifax’s website was under the control of attackers trying to trick visitors into installing fraudulent Adobe Flash updates that could infect computers with malware, the technology news website Ars Technica reported.
“We are aware of the situation identified on the equifax.com website in the credit report assistance link,” Equifax spokesman Wyatt Jefferies said in an email. “Our IT and security teams are looking into this matter, and out of an abundance of caution have temporarily taken this page offline.”
The Atlanta-based company, which has faced seething criticism from consumers, regulators and lawmakers over its handling of the earlier breach, said it would provide more information as it becomes available.
Equifax disclosed on Sept. 7 that its systems had been breached between mid-May and late July. In the fallout, the company has parted ways with its chief executive, chief information officer and chief security officer.
The breach has prompted investigations by multiple federal and state agencies, including a criminal probe by the U. S. Department of Justice.
As a credit reporting agency, Equifax keeps vast amounts of consumer data for banks and other creditors to use to determine the chances of their customers’ defaulting.

Equifax Reportedly Hacked Again, This Time With Fake Pop Ups

0

An independent security analyst claims that the company’s website was compromised for several hours on October 11
(CBS Local) — It’s happened again. According to reports, credit monitoring company Equifax has been the victim of another hack just one month after revealing 143 million Americans may have had their personal information stolen.
Independent security analyst Randy Abrams claims that the company’s website was compromised for several hours on Oct. 11 and was redirecting customers to a fake Adobe Flash update download. Abrams told tech reporters at Ars Technica that he discovered the hack while using Equifax to dispute his own credit report.
Equifax may have been hacked again https://t.co/t9x3N8Rdas pic.twitter.com/KpTBlyaj56
— CA Tech Council (@CATechCouncil) October 12,2017
Once clicked, the phony Flash reportedly downloads adware onto the user’s computer that fills their internet browser with ads. The harmful tech, known as Adware. Eorezo, can not be detected by every antivirus provider and was allegedly encountered by Abrams three separate times.
A day after the suspected hack, multiple outlets are reporting that the malicious pop up has disappeared from Equifax’s website. Tech experts believe the credit monitoring firm may have discovered the hack on their own and removed the fake software however, Equifax did not respond to media requests for comment on the incident.
The embattled company remains under heavy scrutiny after waiting nearly four months to publicly announce that they had been hacked. Equifax established a website for Americans to check if their information may have been stolen and to enroll in free credit monitoring for a year. The latest claims reveal that after one of the largest data breaches ever, Equifax still may not have learned its lesson about providing proper security for its customers.
The latest reports of a hack also come on the heels of the Equifax signing a multi-million dollar deal with the IRS to assist with taxpayer and personal identity verification services .

Sandberg says Facebook allows fake news ads from legit accounts

0

If the Russian-bought election interference ads hadn’t been bought by fraudulent accounts, „Most of them would be allowed to run“ Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg..
If the Russian-bought election interference ads hadn’t been bought by fraudulent accounts, “Most of them would be allowed to run” Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said this morning. “The responsibility of an open platform is to allow people to express themselves” she said during the first of an Axios interview series with Facebook execs.
“The thing about free expression is when you allow free expression you allow free expression” Sandberg said, noting that “we don’t check what people post” and that she doesn’t think people should want Facebook to.
The perspective maintains Facebook’s neutrality across the political spectrum and absolves it from being the truth police.
But it also means that it’s knowingly creating a platform where people can misinform each other. That raises the question of how free speech scales to user-generated content sharing networks that lack the curation and editorial oversight of traditional news distribution systems. Sandberg dodged Axios editor Mike Allen’s question about whether Facebook is a media company, and wasn’t pressed about how it accepts money for ads like other media companies.
During her talk, Sandberg also confirmed that Facebook will support congressional investigators probing election interference when they release the Russian bought ads to the public. She said she met with congress yesterday, Facebook is fully cooperating, and that it will provide congress any content investigators want. That includes non-ads. She also said targeting information about the ads will be released to the public as well.
As for the accusation that Facebook causes filter bubbles by surrounding us with information shared by our social graph instead of a more impartial news source, Sandberg said Facebook actually broadens our perspective through exposure to our weak ties and acquaintances. She cited studies showing we see a wider view of the news through the lens of Facebook than traditional sources.
You can watch the full talk with Sandberg below:
Sandberg’s comments come alongside newly exposed information about the effectiveness of Facebook’s fight against fake news. In an email obtained by BuzzFeed, Facebook’s manager of news partnerships Jason White wrote to one of the company’s third-party fact checkers:
But while Facebook is willing to demote the News Feed prominence of a news story that’s uniquivocally established as false by third-parties, it still allows this content on its platforms.
This is all boils down to the fact that Facebook’s News Feed is sorted by engagement. Normally, low quality content simply receives too few Likes or comments to be seen by many people. But fake news is so tantalizing in how it stokes our biases and political leanings that it breaks this system. People will click through, Like, and share this content because they agree with or are entertained by it, not because it’s high quality.
This in turn incentivizes publishers of false news hoaxes. Facebook demotes hoaxes when identified, and is blocking monetization and ad buys from these publishers. But these mechanics also incentivize publishing of highly polarized opinion, exageration, and sensationalism. And when advertisers pay to boost the reach of fake news, its click-baityness attains these ads a level of engagement that wins them a lower price in Facebook’s auction system.
That’s how Facebook profits from fake news and polarization, even as it vows to work harder to protect us from it. While Facebook might want to offer an open platform where it’s not the opinion police or even the truth police, it’s simultaneously earning money from some of the most malicious uses of free expression.
