Whole Foods, Walmart and other stores embrace online grocery shopping – Silicon Valley

0

Online grocery shopping is growing. Should you give it a try?
Grocery shopping can feel like you’re navigating through an obstacle course filled with crowded parking lots, long lines and screaming kids.
But a growing number of Americans are checking off their grocery lists without even walking inside the store.
San Francisco resident Allison Howard gets her groceries delivered to her home about once a week through Instacart. The busy mother of four places an order online for items in at least two or three stores, including Costco, where time flies when you’re munching on free samples.
“It’s just a huge time savings when I think about those extra five and a half hours I have,” said Howard, who has been using Instacart for more than three years. “That makes it pretty much a no-brainer for me.”
Tech companies including Amazon, Google and Instacart have been teaming up with retailers to expand online grocery shopping. Companies also have been experimenting with ways to make picking up groceries inside the store, or delivery, easier.
“The ones that jumped in on the early side — it was a little risky — but they saw the potential. Now these retailers are really starting to reap the benefits,” said Patricia Orsini, an analyst with eMarketer.
About 23 percent of American households are buying their groceries online, according to a 2017 study by the Food Marketing Institute and Nielsen. Online grocery spending has the potential to grow fivefold to more than $100 billion in 2025, the report stated.
While shopping online can be more convenient, some shoppers want to make sure they get the freshest fruits and vegetables by touching and seeing the produce in person.
Shane Caudle, owner of The SPOT on 25th café in San Mateo, said he prefers to shop in person to guarantee he buys the freshest produce.
“One of the things I tell people at the café is I go out every single day and pick all the produce myself,” he said.
With his business just a few miles away from a grocery store, he’s also noticed that online shopping costs more because of the delivery fees.
Not being able to see the groceries in person was one mental hurdle that Howard said she eventually got over. Online grocery shopping also had other quirks. A bag of flour she received from Costco one day was much larger than she pictured in her mind.
Grocery stores have been expanding the availability of online shopping in cities throughout the United States.
Walmart customers can order groceries online and pick them up at the store on the same day. The retailer, which opened its 1,000th online grocery pickup location this month, also joined forces with Google. Starting in late September, Walmart plans to let customers shop for items on Google Express — the Mountain View-based tech firm’s shopping and delivery service — and reorder household essentials just by speaking to Google’s virtual assistant.
When Amazon purchased Whole Foods, the e-commerce giant not only slashed prices but made the grocery store’s own branded products available through Amazon’s website and grocery delivery service. Amazon employees also have been testing a store in Seattle, where shoppers can pick up their items without having to wait in a checkout line.
Instacart recently expanded its service in the Bay Area, allowing more consumers to get items delivered from Smart & Final, Safeway, Whole Foods, Target and other stores.
Smart & Final last month launched its own website for grocery delivery powered by Instacart, which promises same-day delivery in as little as an hour.
“It’s not necessarily that we’ve seen a shift so far, but we’ve seen new customers introduced to the Smart & Final brand,” said Joe VanDette, Smart & Final’s vice president of digital marketing. “In turn, we’ve seen a lot of crossover with those customers going into our stores and experiencing what we have to offer.”
Antioch resident Maria Irma Aguilar uses Walmart’s and Safeway’s websites to grocery shop online with her son, who attends college in Arizona.
“We were sending him money and he was just eating out or spending his money foolishly,” she said.
Now, the mother and son get on the phone every two weeks to purchase groceries online. She’s even walked him through how to cook a recipe, through FaceTime.
“He learned how to cook for himself, and now he’s not eating out as much or the junk food as he was eating before,” she said.
At a Smart & Final store in San Mateo, Instacart full-service shopper La Tigre Waters wasted no time picking out bananas, asparagus and other items on a customer’s shopping list.
With about 40 minutes to shop and deliver the groceries, she strategically placed her cart to the side, scanned the aisles and gathered vegetables so she only made one trip to the scale.
She knew that dried apricots were located on a bottom shelf. When an item was out of stock, she alerted the customer through the app.
“It’s a very attentive job,” she said. “Notice I took a step back, analyzed everything at once and then went in and made sure the only one I touched was the right one.”
And while time was winding down, the quality of the items was also on her mind.
“If I would not eat it, give it to my kids or allow my grandmother to see I have purchased such an item,” she said, “I would not bring it to the customer.”

What people are saying about Michigan football's ho-hum Air Force win

0

Michigan’s offense isn’t good. But it could be worse, save for those red-zone woes. The unit’s inefficiency was a talking point on Saturday.
There’s nothing worse than purgatory.
Yet that’s exactly where the Michigan football offense resides three weeks into this season.
The Wilton Speight-led unit isn’t good. Michigan’s inefficiency scoring touchdowns was a talking point after Saturday’s 29-13 win over Air Force and has been for much of this season.
Four red-zone opportunities went awry on Saturday to fuel that criticism. And though U-M kicker Quinn Nordin cashed in with points on each occasion, continuing his historic start, the lack of offensive punch is a concern for a team that turns its attention to Big Ten play next week.
Purdue is proving to be no slouch, after all.
Perhaps that’s why the reaction was mixed on social media following Saturday’s win. Here’s a snapshot of the conversation:
This is good, right? Or, bad? Good and bad?
So much for those punt return problems. Donovan Peoples-Jones scores his first Michigan touchdown in dynamic fashion, erasing last week’s bad memories.
Ohio State running back and former Detroit Cass Tech star Mike Weber approved of the play …
So did former Michigan star wide receiver Braylon Edwards …
And former U-M All-America cornerback Jourdan Lewis.
The play masked some of Michigan’s deficiencies on offense. Speight was 14 of 23 passing for 169 yards. Is that good enough to make him the starter against Purdue? The jury’s still out, on social media.
Air Force apparently went into stealth mode against Speight.
Free Press sports columnist Jeff Seidel has another theory about the offense .
It wasn’t all bad, though.
Nordin is on a record pace this season. Now, we know why.

Saints inactives vs. Patriots: Trey Hendrickson to make debut, Stephone Anthony out

0

Hendrickson was limited all week in practice
The New Orleans Saints hope to have more punch in their pass rush in Sunday’s matchup against the New England Patriots at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Rookie defensive end Trey Hendrickson, a third-round pick, is active for the game despite being limited in practice all week with an illness. Hendrickson missed Week 1, but the Saints think he’ll be able to provide help off the edge a week after the defense struggled to create pressure against Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford.
Linebacker Stephone Anthony (ankle) is inactive for the second straight game. Anthony was also limited in practice all week.
With Hendrickson available, fellow rookie Al-Quadin Muhammad is inactive. Muhammad didn’t play any defensive snaps in Week 1 as the Saints used just three defensive ends — Cameron Jordan, Alex Okafor and Hau’oli Kikaha.
The other players sitting out for the Saints are offensive tackles Zach Strief (knee) and Terron Armstead (shoulder), quarterback Taysom Hill, cornerback Ken Crawley and wide receiver Austin Carr.
For the Patriots, wide receivers Danny Amendola and Matt Slater, middle linebacker Dont’a Hightower, defensive back Nate Ebner, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine and offensive linemen Cole Croston and LaAdrian Waddle are inactive. Amendola, Hightower, Slater and Valentine were ruled out on Friday due to injuries.

Kevin Hart Extortion Video, Person of Interest Will Take Lie Detector Test For a Price

0

Someone called Kevin Hart’s lawyer saying they’d take a lie detector test to clear their name, for cash.
One of the people who could be the extortionist behind the Kevin Hart sexually explicit video contacted his lawyer and offered to take a lie detector test… but the comedian would have to write a huge check to make that happen.
Sources familiar with the case tell TMZ … the bizarre call was made recently by a person who apparently has some connection to the encounter between Kevin and the woman pictured above.
The person who called Hart’s lawyer did not say what they would answer while hooked up to the polygraph, but said they would only sit for a 6-figure amount — we’re told somewhere around $500,000.
The crazy thing is this … if the person is the extortionist, they’re essentially saying they would go to prison for $500k. If they’re not the extortionist, then they’re a scam artist.
Our sources say Kevin’s attorney did not bite.
As we reported, the FBI is on the case and is honing in on a suspect .

Official: 4 US tourists attacked with acid in France

0

The Marseille prosecutor’s office says four young female U. S. tourists have been attacked with acid in Marseille’s main train station by a woman who has been arrested.
Four young American women were attacked with acid Sunday in the French city of Marseille by a woman who has been arrested, the Marseille prosecutor’s office said.
Two of the tourists were injured in the face in the attack in the city’s main Saint Charles train station and one of them has a possible eye injury, a spokeswoman for the Marseille prosecutor’s office told The Associated Press in a phone call.
She said all four of the women, who are in their 20s, have been hospitalized, two of them for shock.
The spokeswoman said the 41-year-old female suspect did not make any extremist threats or declarations during the attack. She said there were no obvious indications that the woman’s actions were terror-related, but added that officials could not be 100 percent sure about ruling out terror links at such an early stage of the investigation.
The spokeswoman spoke on condition of anonymity, per the custom of the French judicial system.
She did not release any further details about the suspects or the victims, including where in the United States the tourists were from.
The Marseille fire department was alerted just after 11 a.m. and dispatched four vehicles and 14 firefighters to the train station, a department spokeswoman said.
Two of the Americans were „slightly injured“ with acid but did not require emergency medical treatment from medics at the scene, the spokeswoman said. She requested anonymity in keeping with fire department protocol.
A spokesman for the United States embassy in Paris said the U. S. consulate in Marseille was in contact with French authorities about the attack investigation and the condition of the American women.
U. S. authorities in France are not immediately commenting further on what happened to protect the privacy of the American tourists, embassy spokesman Alex Daniels said.
Marseille is a port city in southern France that is closer to Barcelona than Paris.
In previous incidents in Marseille, a driver deliberately rammed into two bus stops last month, killing a woman, but officials said it wasn’t terror-related.
In April, French police say they thwarted an imminent „terror attack“ and arrested two suspected radicals in Marseille just days before the first round of France’s presidential election. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters the two suspects „were getting ready to carry out an imminent, violent action“ on French territory.
In January 2016, a 15-year-old Turkish Kurd was arrested after attacking a Jewish teacher on a Marseille street. He told police he acted in the name of the Islamic State group.

Crash kills veteran reporter-pilot of Albuquerque TV station

0

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M…
ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (AP) — A longtime reporter at an Albuquerque TV station has died after the news helicopter he was piloting crashed in central New Mexico, authorities said Sunday.
Bob Martin, 64, was pronounced dead at the crash scene Saturday night, according to New Mexico State Police.
KRQE-TV said Martin worked for the station for more than 20 years, frequently shooting, writing and editing stories. It wasn’t immediately clear if Martin was headed to cover a story at the time of the crash.
„Here at KRQE, we all had great respect for Bob and cherished his friendship,“ the station said on its website Sunday morning.
KRQE said the helicopter crashed about 4:30 p.m. Saturday in rugged terrain north of Carrizozo, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) southeast of Albuquerque.
State Police said it was notified of a downed aircraft shortly after 5 p.m. and found the remnants of the helicopter along with its sole occupant.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were investigating the cause of the crash, police said.

Ahead of U. N. meetings, Trump aides call for more pressure on North Korea

0

Trump officials also say they are willing to discuss climate change, but will stay out of Paris deal.
NEW YORK — President Trump and top aides warmed up for this week’s series of United Nations meetings by calling for more global pressure on North Korea and to at least talk about global efforts to address climate change.
After a late-night phone call between Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the White House said the two leaders will meet at the U. N. and remain „committed to continuing to take steps to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities and to maximize economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea.“
In tweeting about the call with Moon, Trump referred to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as „Rocket Man“ and appeared to refer to economic sanctions by saying that „long gas lines forming in North Korea. Too bad!“

North Korea threatens to ’sink‘ Japan and turn U. S. to ‚ashes and darkness‘
Meanwhile, National Security Adviser H. R. McMaster said during Sunday show interviews that new stories suggesting Trump has changed his mind about the U. S. withdrawal from the Paris climate change agreement are false. But he added that the administration is open to discussing the issue.
„He’s open to any discussions that will help us improve the environment, that will help us ensure energy security and will advance our prosperity and the prosperity of American workers and American businesses,“ McMaster said on ABC’s This Week .
North Korea’s nuclear threats and climate change are among the main topics as Trump makes his first appearance as president at the United Nations General Assembly. The president is scheduled to address the assembly Tuesday and to meet separately with other world leaders throughout the week.
Trump plans to ask U. N. members, particularly China, to help pressure North Korea into giving up nuclear weapons and to stop threatening to use them.
While Trump has questioned the effectiveness of existing sanctions, U. N. Ambassador Nikki Haley told CNN that North Korea „is already starting to feel the pinch. That’s the reason you seeing them reacting the way they are.“
Despite longtime criticism from Trump, Kim’s government in recent months has threatened U. S. facilities in Guam, fired two missiles over Japan and tested a hydrogen bomb .
Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union, Haley said that while the United States seeks a diplomatic solution in North Korea, it is also prepared to use a military option under the leadership of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
„If the United States has to defend itself or defend its allies in any way, North Korea will be destroyed,“ she told CNN.
If diplomacy doesn’t work, Haley said, „General Mattis will take care of it.“
Some United Nations members, in the meantime, want Trump to reconsider his decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate change agreement reached by the Obama administration. A news report over the weekend said Trump was considering that option, but administration officials denied it.
The Paris deal puts more demands on the United States than on other countries when it comes to cutting carbon emissions, McMaster said. He noted that when Trump made his announcement in June about withdrawal, he said he was open to talk about a revamped agreement.
„He’s out of the Paris climate record, but he says the door is open,“ McMaster told Fox News Sunday .

Trump comments on London attack draw rebuke from United Kingdom
The topic of terrorism is also likely to surface at the United Nations, especially in light of Friday’s attack in a London subway train .
On ABC, McMaster echoed a Trump tweet calling for a tougher travel ban into the United States, saying „this is something we’re looking at.“
The administration’s current ban, affecting travel from six Muslim-majority countries, is the subject of legal challenges.
While opponents describe the ban as an unconstitutional religious test, McMaster said it is a „first step“ toward improved border screening designed to weed out potential terrorists.
„If you can’t screen people effectively to know who’s coming into your country, then you shouldn’t allow people from that country to travel,“ McMaster said.
Trump’s political opponents pointed to what they called a series of mixed messages on national security, the environment and border security, as well as other issues.
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., speaking on ABC, cited Trump’s changed positions on what to do about the status of children brought into the United States illegally by their parents, a group known as the DREAMers.
„It’s very difficult to tell day-to-day what the administration intends with climate, with the DREAMers, and any host of other issues,“ Schiff said.
