Former CIA chief leaves Harvard after Manning named fellow

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former top CIA official has abruptly resigned as a senior fellow at Harvard University over the school’s decision to hire Chelsea Manning, who was convicted of leaking classified information.
Mike Morell, former deputy director and acting director of the CIA, sent a resignation letter Thursday to the dean of Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Morell, who was a non-resident senior fellow, says he cannot be part of an organization that „honors a convicted felon and leaker of classified information.“ He says leaking classified information is „disgraceful.“
Manning has been invited to be a visiting fellow at the Kennedy school’s Institute of Politics.
She is a transgender woman who was convicted in 2013 of leaking more than 700,000 U. S. documents. Her sentence was commuted by former President Barack Obama.

Trans Actress Daniela Vega Drawing Oscar Buzz for ‘Fantastic Woman’

0

While several transgender musicians have been Oscar-nominated, no trans performer has ever earned an acting nod.
Daniela Vega, 28, stars in Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman.” She plays Marina, a transgender woman whose partner (Francisco Reyes) dies, after which Marina is subjected to harsh treatment by the family of her deceased lover and by police investing the death.
Chile has selected the film as its Academy Awards submission this year. But the bigger spotlight may be on whether Vega’s breakout performance — one of stirring strength and compassion — could make Oscar history. Reviewing the movie at its Berlin Film Festival premiere, Variety called her performance “a multi-layered, emotionally polymorphous feat of acting, ” that deserves “so much more than political praise.”
While several transgender musicians have been Oscar-nominated, no trans performer has ever earned an acting nod.
“It’s too early to talk about that, to think about it. I have lots of festivals to attend, lots of dresses to wear, ” Vega said with a grin in an interview. “The Oscars are a little bit beyond the timeline I’ m thinking about right now. We’ ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
Vega and “A Fantastic Woman” will not have an easy road to the Oscars. Performances in foreign-language films rarely break into the acting categories, and this year, like most, the field of potential contenders boasts plenty of heavyweight, bigger-name performers like Meryl Streep (“The Post”) and Jessica Chastain (“Molly’s Game”) .
But Vega has two things going for her: the depth of her performance and the possibility of a long-awaited Oscar landmark. Such a result could have great meaning for a trans community that President Donald Trump recently banned from entering the military.
“If we broaden our gaze, it will be more interesting, more beautiful. If we can make more diverse colors, people, stories, it will be interesting, ” said Vega. “Uniforms are for the military and the police, not for our thinking.”
Hollywood has far from shied away from telling transgender stories, but the industry has come under increasing criticism for not casting them in high-profile parts. Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’ t Cry”) and Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) have taken home awards, and movies like 2015′s “The Danish Girl, ” with Eddie Redmayne, and 2005′s “Transamerica, ” with Felicity Huffman, have garnered nominations.
While those films and the Amazon series “Transparent” have been widely applauded, pressure has mounted urging producers to cast trans actors for trans parts. Progress has instead come in smaller, offbeat productions like Sean Baker’s “Tangerine, ” the much-lauded 2015 film Baker shot with iPhones. It starred a pair of transgender performers, Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. Taylor last year won an Independent Spirit Award for her performance.
“There is very beautiful transgender talent, ” Taylor said, accepting the supporting actress award. “You better get out there and put it in your movie.”
Transgender people have been nominated in other Oscar categories. The composer Angela Morley received two nods, for 1974′s “The Little Prince” and 1976′s “The Slipper and the Rose.”
Most recently, singer Anohni, formerly known as Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, became the first transgendered performer ever nominated. She collaborated with J. Ralph on the nominated song “Manta Ray” for the documentary “Racing Extinction.” But when the category’s other nominees — Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, the Weeknd — were given performing slots during the 2016 broadcast, Anohni was not, and she opted to boycott the ceremony.
In a fiery essay announcing her refusal to attend, Anohni declared: “They are going to try to convince us that they have our best interests at heart by waving flags for identity politics and fake moral issues.”
Whether Vega — and Oscar voters — can change history won’ t be decided for months. Sony Picture Classics, which has guided performers to dozens of Academy Award nominations, will release the film on Nov. 17. For now, Vega is soaking up her moment.
“It’s like living a dream, ” said Vega. “It’s like a film in a film.”

Wielka Brytania: Komisja śledcza ds. Grenfell Tower rozpoczęła pracę

0

To najpoważniejszy pożar w budynku mieszkalnym we współczesnej historii Wielkiej Brytanii.

Bitcoin Crashes 35% In China: Here’s What You Need To Know

0

Bitcoin crashes – China has rocked the cryptocurrency world once again with the announcement from Beijing that it would stop all
China has rocked the cryptocurrency world once again with the announcement from Beijing that it would stop all cryptocurrency exchange trading. This was soon followed by official notification from the country’s second largest exchange, BTC China, that it would stop all trading on the platform as of September 30. These two major announcements come on the heels of the September 4 joint release from the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), Chinese securities and banking regulators, and the Chinese government, that essentially made Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) in that country illegal.
These are all serious storm clouds gathering over the cryptocurrency space. They seem to offer equal amounts of undisguised hostility toward cryptocurrencies and token sales, paired with a great deal of ambiguity as to where traders can continue to do business, and what happens to existing operations and registrations.
Observers have noted that by closing the barn doors inside the country, traders and miners will simply turn to external markets like Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea.
Regardless, such an all-encompassing pronouncement has led to a spectacular drop in the price of Bitcoin, losing 35% of its value, from a late-summer high of $5000 to around $3400 as of September 14.
Thousands of investors as well as organizations in the midst of planning or conducting ICOs find themselves rudderless, both in terms of where they will host their operations and how the volatility of the currency will affect the raising of capital.
As Bitcoin and other blockchain-based technologies gain greater prominence on the world stage, many countries and their banking representatives are taking a more serious look at their implications, and are demanding stricter controls and regulation.
The sentiment among market players remains bullish, however. It was expected that influential governing bodies like those in China would step in and take some of the heat out of the bubble, leading to speculation that such activities help correct the market back to more realistic valuation.
The Chinese ban does not put limits on all types of trading and activity, meaning that much of the business will simply move to other markets.
The obvious downside, however, is the perpetuation of volatility. Currencies like Bitcoin continue to be hard pressed to present as legitimate alternative monies when their value changes within hours. At best, companies that accept Bitcoin must do so that they convert them immediately into more stable currencies, or run the risk of losing out in substantial measure.
As it is with so many developments in the cryptocurrency space, only time will tell if the September 30 ban will have any lasting impact on the overall price of Bitcoin worldwide. Having survived the August fork, and with a number of other hurdles yet to come, Bitcoin continues to plow on through choppy waters, and continues to be the brand against which all other virtual currencies are compared.
The Chinese bans on trading and on ICOs will likely help stabilize the market and make it ultimately more reliable. It is unlikely to stop traders, even inside China, from pursuing their goals.

Equifax blames hack on vulnerability that they failed to patch

As we continue to learn more about the massive breach at Equifax that exposed the sensitive information of 143 million Americans, officials now believe they have discovered how the attack was executed.
As we continue to learn more about the massive breach at Equifax that exposed the sensitive information of 143 million Americans, officials now believe they have discovered how the attack was executed.
The May hack stems from an Apache Struts bug that was patched in March, two months prior.
The specific vulnerability in question, Apache Struts CVE-2017-5638, exploits specially crafted HTTP headers to allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the victim’s machine. The vulnerability was labeled as „massive“ and was used to exploit countless websites. Two working versions of the attack were also made publicly available online.
Many large institutions such as banks, government agencies and some of the world’s top companies use Apache Struts for their web apps.
Vulnerabilities like these happen from time to time and are extremely hard to avoid. This is why developers strongly recommend installing patches as soon as they are available. While Equifax has not officially stated whether or not they patched the bug, there is no real alternative explanation to how the attack could have occurred.
This type of attack is easy for hackers to carry out and labor-intensive for companies to fix. Patching the vulnerability involves manually updating, testing and then re-deploying all Apache Struts web apps that a company uses.
We’ll have to wait for the final incident report to know exactly what those web servers were running. Given what we now know, it appears that Equifax’s negligence in maintaining their systems is the root cause for one of the financial industry’s biggest breaches.
