Here's the Apple iOS 11 release date…

0

… And which devices will be able to run Apple’s updated mobile OS, which has been in public beta since late June.
Apple today said that it will release iOS 11, the latest operating system for its iPhone and iPad line-ups, on Sept. 19, or a week from now.
If the Cupertino, Calif. company follows tradition, it will issue the upgrade at approximately 10 a.m. PT, or 1 p.m. ET.
Apple first revealed changes to iOS in June, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) , where it touted new features and enhancements targeting the iPad above all. Analysts liked what they saw of iOS 11 then, and called out several important additions, including the new Files app, that they believed would make Apple’s tablet a stronger PC alternative.
„For the first time, the iPad version of iOS feels like it’s gaining a truly distinct identity that’s really optimized for heavy-duty productivity tasks, “ said Jan Dawson, principal analyst at Jackdaw Research, at the time.
iOS 11 will run on the iPhone 5S and later (but not on the iPhone 5 or 5S) ; on all versions of the iPad Pro; on the iPad Air and Air 2; on 2017’s fifth-generation iPad; and on the iPad Mini 2 through 4.
The new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which will reach the first wave of customers Sept. 22, and the iPhone X, slated for a Nov. 3 debut, will have iOS 11 pre-installed. Other eligible iPhones and iPads can be upgraded when owners select the Settings app, tap „General, “ and then touch „Software Update, “ on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Apple must hope that the upgrade to iOS 11 goes smoother than last year’s roll-out of iOS 10. At the time, customers reported that the upgrade failed to install, crippling their devices and sending them on a hunt for a Mac or PC armed with iTunes.

Here’s how Matthew Bourne’s ‘The Red Shoes’ will dance its way into the Ahmanson – Orange County Register

0

Bourne’s production is the first ballet staging of “The Red Shoes.”
Tony Award-winning choreographer and director Matthew Bourne is conjuring golden-age cinema in “The Red Shoes.”
The production, which makes its North American debut at the Ahmanson Theatre on Friday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 1, with the opening set for Tuesday, Sept. 19, is an adaptation of the 1948 Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger Oscar-winning film. It tells the story of Victoria Page’s desire for the man she loves and her dream to become the greatest dancer in the world.
In the 1940s, a woman couldn’ t expect to have both.
With all its tension and a lengthy ballet sequence, the film has inspired generations of young women to pursue dance.
Among them is New Adventures classically trained dancer Ashley Shaw, who returns to the role of “Vicky” that she originated for the world premiere in England in November 2016.
“When I first saw the film, I was too young to understand the storyline, but I remember the red shoes, ” she says, adding “they were just brilliant.”
Bourne’s production is the first ballet adaptation of this story within a story, which includes the ballet called “The Red Shoes” by Hans Christian Anderson.
“It’s a difficult film to adapt into another medium, ” says Michael Solomon, vice president of presentations and education at the Music Center who encourages audiences to see the film before coming to the show. “When you’ re doing this as a dance piece, you have to find a way to make sure that people understand how to follow the larger story along with the actual ‘Red Shoes’ ballet within it. But Matthew has done it.”
The Observer called it “a feast for the eye, with every scene animated by sharp detail and witty characterization.”
In its review, the Daily Telegraph hailed it as “a complex story, one that ricochets between London and France, art and real life.”
“He knows how to tell a story without words, ” Solomon says. “That’s why he was the right person to make it into a ballet.”
In Bourne’s ballet, there is no dialogue. Events only hinted at in the film are chronologically performed to help the audience follow along with the story, including having a ballerina up on pointe.
Projected backdrops, costumes, and dramatic lighting evokes the look of Technicolor.
“The Red Shoes” is one in a long line of notable Bourne productions presented for L.A. audiences. They include “Swan Lake, ” which had its American premiere at the Ahmanson in 1997, and eight others: “Sleeping Beauty, ” “Cinderella, ” “The Car Man, ” “Play Without Word, ” “Nutcracker!, ” “Edward Scissorhands, ” “My Fair Lady, ” and “Mary Poppins.”
Video: See clips of Matthew Bourne’s “ The Red Shoes ” and “ Swan Lake ”
“It’s quite hard to pigeonhole what our company does because we’ re somewhere between ballet, a musical, and theater, ” Shaw says. “But I think that’s what Matthew Bourne does so brilliantly.”
When: 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, Saturday, Sept. 16,1 and 6: 30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, and additional dates through Oct. 1, with the opening set for Sept. 19
Where: Ahmanson Theatre at the Music Center, 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles
Tickets: $30-$165

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma By The Numbers

0

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma were record setting storms. Harvey brought massive flooding to Texas while Irma is the strongest storm ever formed in the Atlantic
Two hurricanes that recently hit the U. S.’s mainland within weeks of each other set records for their power and destruction.
Hurricane Harvey made its first landfall in Texas on Aug. 25 as a Category 4 hurricane. It stalled and dumped record-setting amounts of rain, most noticeably on the city of Houston. It then backed off into the Gulf of Mexico before making its second and final landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 30.
Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean before making landfall on the Florida Keys’ Cudjoe Key Sunday morning as a Category 4 hurricane. It moved to mainland Florida later in the day, moving up the state’s west coast before moving into Georgia and South Carolina.
Here’s the story of each hurricane told in numbers.

USA: Zarzut zbiorowego gwałtu wobec czterech polskich muzyków

0

OLED vs LCD: How the iPhone X's display changes everything

0

Apple’s jump to OLED technology could bring several benefits for iPhone users.
The OLED display Apple is using in its new iPhone X brings several benefits over current LCD technology, but supplies are likely to be limited at first. Will be benefits of the new screen make it worth the wait? Here’s a quick rundown on OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology and how it differs from today’s LCD (liquid crystal display) screens.
LCD screens like those used in previous iPhones and the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are built on a backlight—a panel as large as the screen itself that produces a constant white light anytime the screen is on. A series of polarizers and filters are layered in front of the backlight to control the light and produce the image you see on screen. It’s been the dominant technology used in flat-panel displays for almost two decades, but keeping that backlight on draws a lot of power—and that’s a big disadvantage in a portable device.
An OLED does away with the backlight completely. Each individual pixel has a tiny amount of organic material that fluoresces when current flows, so the pixels produce light directly. It’s also possible to control brightness at a per-pixel level.
The display is typically the most power-hungry component in any phone because of the backlight. By removing it, the iPhone will be more power efficient, which is great for users.
It’s not the only reason to applaud OLED. Getting rid of the backlight allows for the entire display module to be thinner, which is an important consideration in a smartphone. Apple could use the extra space to make the phone thinner or add a little more battery capacity.
Just as important is the image. OLEDs display more vibrant colors, have deeper blacks and brighter whites and a greater contrast ratio so most people find them superior to LCD.
No. OLED screens began appearing in smartphones several years ago and are used today in phones from Samsung, LG, and other competitors. Several companies also offer OLED monitors and TV screens and flexible OLEDs are increasingly used in smartwatches, fitness bands, and automobile dashboards. Apple is already using an OLED in the Apple Watch.
In part it’s a problem of production. As the iPhone is the world’s best-selling smartphone, Apple needs to be able to ensure a reliable stream of OLED panels from its display partners, but OLED has proved a difficult technology to master.
So when you get to the tens of millions of displays that Apple needs, a small manufacturing glitch can turn into a big problem.
To date, most of the world’s smartphone OLEDs are produced by Samsung Display, which leaves Apple at the mercy of a single supplier for a key component—typically a position the company has tried to avoid.
While Apple doesn’ t comment on its supply chain, the availability of OLED panels is already expected to impact availability of the high-end iPhone with limited supplies being available at launch and back orders being the norm. It will also contribute to the expected record-setting price of the new handset.

iPhone X Launch: As it happened

0

Three new iPhones were announced today. We discuss the announcement of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, and explain how to re-watch the Apple event at any time.
To mark the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, today Apple announced not only its usual upgrade to the iPhone 7, but an all-new iPhone with a full-screen OLED display and numerous other enhancements. Previously thought to be called the iPhone 8, it now appears that it’ll be called the iPhone X (aka iPhone 10) .
In this article we provide you with a summary of the iPhone announcement, and also explain how you can re-watch the announcement from home at any time.
In addition to launching the Apple TV 4K and Apple Watch Series 3,Apple launched three new iPhones: the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.
The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are what we’d consider standard ‚S‘ upgrades in Apple’s terms, offering a slight change in appearance with upgraded internals. The iPhone 8 features glass on the rear, allowing it to offer wireless charging compatible with the Qi charging standard.
Alongside wireless charging, the iPhone 8 Plus features a new Portrait Lighting mode. The new mode allows you to preview and apply professional lighting effects to your photos in real time, and even lets you edit them again at a later date if required.
The star of Apple’s September announcement was the highly-anticipated iPhone X. The iPhone X features the most radical redesign of the iPhone in recent years, ditching the Home button to feature a 5.8in edge-to-edge display.
It also features Face ID, Apple’s facial scanning technology that it’s so confident of that it uses it not only to unlock your iPhone, but also to make payments with Apple Pay and purchase apps on the App Store.
Of course, that’s not all that makes the iPhone X so cool – take a look at the latest iPhone X news for more details of tonight’s announcement, including UK pricing and availability.
Those interested in re-watching the iPhone announcement themselves can head over to the Apple website, or read our live blog below.

iPhone X latest news: Release date, UK price, specifications & features

0

As expected, Apple has announced the iPhone X as its 10th anniversary smartphone. Read the latest news about the iPhone X UK release date, price, specs and features.
The long wait is over and the new iPhone is finally here. Apple has revealed its latest smartphone at a launch event in the new Steve Jobs Theater. Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone X including release date, price, specs and features.
After more speculation around the name of this model than ever before, Apple decided on the iPhone X. It might not be a number but the X signifies the way this is a special edition and is 10 in roman numerals matching up with the iPhone’s 10th anniversary.
Announced on 12 September, as expected, the iPhone X will be available to pre-order on 27 October and will then go on sale with a release date of 3 November.
Frightful rumours flew around ahead of the launch suggesting the iPhone X would be the most expensive model to date and that’s certainly the case now everything is official.
The iPhone X starts at a price of $999, of course, gets you the base 64GB model and it’s £999 in the UK. If you want the higher capacity 256GB storage capacity, then the iPhone X price jumps to $1,149 or £1,149.
If it’s all out of your budget then Apple has also announced the cheaper iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus which start at $699/£699 and $799/$799 respectively.
Some iPhone models have brought only minor updates in terms of both design and hardware, but Apple has made sure this anniversary edition is something exciting for all of its fans. It could even tempt some non-iPhone users to jump ship.
With a similar design to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus at the back, there’s now glass and the iPhone X uses a stainless steel band of metal between it at the front panel.
The glass has a pearlescent style, says Apple, and means that the device at long last supports wireless charging.
The iPhone X is available in fewer colours compared to the 8 models with just Space Grey and Silver on offer at the moment.
Apple has made the iPhone X at 7.7mm and 174g which is slightly thicker than the iPhone 8 Plus but not as heavy. You’ ll notice that the iconic home button is now gone and we’ ll explain what that means for Touch ID below.
In terms of hardware, the screen is by far one of the biggest upgrades Apple has introduced to the iPhone in a long time. It’s also one of the main reasons to buy the X over the 8.
Apple is calling it the Super Retina Display and it measures 5.8in making it the largest screen in an iPhone to date. As you can see in the images, the screen is edge-to-edge on all sides but has a notch at the top for the TrueDepth camera system which we’ ll explain below.
The iPhone X screen resolution is 2436×1125 which means a pixel density of 458ppi – the highest of any iPhone yet. Apple has finally put an OLED panel in its smartphone and the iPhone X supports HDR, TrueTone and 3D Touch.
The sad news for many fans is that the home button is now gone and although it was rumoured Apple would move it to the back or even build it into the screen, neither is true.
That means there is no Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the iPhone X so Apple has created Face ID instead so you’ ll have to log in using your mug.
The notch in the screen houses the TrueDepth module which contains the front camera along with an infrared sensor, flood illuminator and dot projector (along with other things like a microphone) .
All of this combines to scan your face and Apple says the Face ID system will keep up with changes whether they be clothes, glasses or things like growing a beard. The firm also promises that the system can’ t be spoofed by photos or even professional masks.
„All saved facial information is protected by the secure enclave to keep data extremely secure, while all of the processing is done on-device and not in the cloud to protect user privacy. Face ID only unlocks iPhone X when customers look at it and is designed to prevent spoofing by photos or masks, “ said Apple.
With no Touch ID on the iPhone X, the Face ID system works with Apple Pay and third party apps.
At the heart of the iPhone X is the new A11 Bionic processor, the same one found in both iPhone 8 models.
It’s a 64-bit six-core chip with two cores focused on performance while the remaining four are tasked with efficiency. Apple says that the new chip is 25 percent up on the previous generation in performance and 70 percent better in efficiency.
It’s also got Apple’s first own-designed GPU with three cores and there’s also an Apple ISP, plus a video encoder.
As usual, Apple doesn’ t disclose the RAM inside but it’s believed to be 3GB. In terms of storage you have to choose between 64- or 256GB with no expandable microSD card slot, of course.
As mentioned earlier, the glass rear cover means that the iPhone finally has wireless charging – the iPhone 8 models do, too. The iPhone X supports Qi wireless and will work with various pads from third parties as well as Apple’s own AirPower which can charge three devices at once.
Thanks to tweaks in hardware and software, Apple touts an additional two hours battery life compared to the iPhone 7.
As expected, the iPhone X has dual cameras. Each are 12Mp with one offering a regular wide-angle with an f/1.8 aperture, while the telephoto lens has an f/2.4 aperture. There’s also a Quad-LED flash which offers two times better uniformity of light.
Apple says the cameras are better and faster than previously with ‘deeper’ pixels and, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, both rear cameras have optical image stabilisation (OIS) .
For selfies, the TrueDepth front camera is 7Mp with Portrait Mode, Portrait Lighting and an f/2.2 aperture.
It’s no surprise that iOS 11 comes pre-loaded on the iPhone X but the hardware changes like the Super Retina Display and removal of Touch ID mean that interacting with the device has to be different.
With no physical home button, you’ ll need to swipe up from bottom instead to get to the home button, pausing mid-swipe if you’ re doing it with an app for multi-tasking. You can wake the screen with a simple tap.
The Control Centre is now accessed with a swipe down from the top of the screen like Android and you’ ll be able to summon Siri by using the power button on the side of the phone, or your voice as previously.
A new feature announced is Animojis which are a set of 12 emojis that will emmote based on your facial movements captured via the front camera. You can create stickers or record an animated message complete with audio.

Bannon dials down China criticism during HK visit

HONG KONG • In the White House, Mr Stephen Bannon helped shape President Donald Trump’s nationalistic rhetoric that blamed China for economic woes in the United States.
Less than a month after leaving the government, Mr Bannon, the former chief strategist to Mr Trump, went to Hong Kong – at the invitation of brokerage firm CLSA – where he complimented China’s leadership.
The visit was Mr Bannon’s first high-profile overseas trip since he left the White House in August and returned to Breitbart News, the right-wing news outlet.
Mr Bannon had lunch yesterday with a small group of hedge fund managers and investors, and later gave a keynote address at a major investor conference.
He told the group that Mr Trump had great respect for China’s President Xi Jinping, and felt that the two leaders could find a solution to the North Korea crisis, reported The New York Times.
Mr Bannon has not been shy about his views on China in the past. In an interview with 60 Minutes that was broadcast on Sunday, he said the US needed to take a tougher stance against Beijing.
He said that China was „at economic war with the US“, and that it was Washington’s turn to respond.
But during yesterday’s events, Mr Bannon seemed more subdued about the purported Chinese threat, talking more broadly about global trade imbalance, according to people in attendance.
„Trump doesn’t respect anyone more than the President of China, “ Mr Bannon was quoted as saying by CNN. „There is a lot of affinity between China and the US.“
In his keynote address in a crowded Grand Hyatt ballroom, Mr Bannon discussed economic nationalism in the US and its spread across the globe, including in Britain.
Outside the hotel, a small group of protesters gathered, shouting anti-racism slogans.
CLSA initially said Mr Bannon’s speech would be open to some media but later reversed its decision. A spokesman said the event was meant for invited clients only.
