Go-kart drivers must wear seat belts under new rules

People dressed as „Super Mario“ characters tearing round the streets of Tokyo in go-karts will have to buckle up, Japanese authorities said Thursday, following a series of accidents.
Visitors to Tokyo are often stunned to see convoys of go-karts driven by people — often tourists — dressed up as Mario and other popular Nintendo characters screaming around the busy streets of the world’s most populous city.
Unlike many countries, Japan has no ban on people driving go-karts on public highways.
But following three accidents over the past year, the transport ministry has decided to enforce the wearing of seatbelts for such vehicles.
Currently, the vehicles have no seatbelts and drivers are not required to wear helmets, a ministry official who did not wish to be named told AFP.
„It’s dangerous as other cars cannot see them because of their low height,“ he added.
The ministry is looking to implement the regulations in a few years.
Under the proposed new rules, go-karts must be at least one meter off the ground and the driving wheel must be made with soft material to prevent driver injury in case of accident.
The move comes after Kyoto-based Nintendo filed a lawsuit in February against MariCar, a Tokyo go-kart rental firm, for letting tourists wear unauthorized Nintendo character costumes.

Holiday vampires on bungee cords in the Bywater? Yes!

0

It’s a tongue-in-cheek horror musical at the Old Iron Works.
I spent Wednesday night in a sheet metal warehouse on Piety Street with a bunch of vampires. OK, that’s not so unusual. But some of these particular blood-suckers were dangling like yo-yos from the ceiling on bungee cords, two were dressed like weird Christmas elves, and one was pretending to be a narcissistic, social media-obsessed, celebrity chef (which may be the most redundant thing you’ll read all day).
It was the rehearsal of the tastefully titled „Suck It: A Vampire Musical,“ that opens Thursday (Dec. 7). Based on what I witnessed, I highly recommend the show to those who are comfortable with lewd pantomime, close encounters with cannibals, and a point of view that acknowledges the eternal horror of the holidays.
Theatrical previews such as this typically contain a brief plot summary. Here goes: The emotionally fragile hero of „Suck It: A Vampire Musical“ tries to get away from the flying vampires, but he doesn’t try hard enough. That’s it. No, I cannot explain what the celebrity chef has to do with anything. But one does not come to a sheet metal warehouse on Piety Street searching for a cogent plot, does one?
The absurdist play is directed by Nari Tomassetti with music by Matt Bell and the Quaketones. The tongue-in-cheek bloodletting takes place at the Old Ironworks, 612 Piety Street (across from Pizza Delicious). Admission is $15 in cash at the door. Showtime is 8 p.m. on Dec. 7 to 10 and 14 to 17. Expect to stand. Cocktails will be necessary… I mean, cocktails will be available.

Trump signs proclamation for Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

0

President Donald Trump kibitzed with World War II veterans at the White House on Thursday as he signed a proclamation declaring it National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump kibitzed with World War II veterans at the White House on Thursday as he signed a proclamation declaring it National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
A half dozen veterans of the attack, wearing medals and military hats, attended the ceremony and bantered with the president as he commemorated their service.
“All American hearts are filled with gratitude for their service, their sacrifice and their presence here today,” Trump said.
Among those attending was 98-year-old Mickey Ganitch, who was on the USS Pennsylvania’s football team and getting ready for a championship game against the crew of the USS Arizona when Japan attacked.
“You never got that game, huh?” asked the president.
“We had a war to fight,” Ganitch responded before kneeling to mimic his best football move – and repeating the move at Trump ’s request.
Ganitch later broke out into song, delivering a rendition of “Remember Pearl Harbor.”
“You really made this very exciting,” Trump remarked, thanking him for the “free entertainment.”
Trump said he hoped the vets would join him every year to mark the occasion for the next – presuming he runs and wins re-election – seven years.
“Today our entire nation pauses to remember Pearl Harbor and the brave warriors who on that day stood tall and fought for America,” he said.
The president invited the men to see the Oval Office after the signing, promising them pens and autographs.
Trump last month paid a visit to Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor and its memorial to the USS Arizona before he departed for his first trip to Asia. The surprise attack by Japan killed more than 2,400 Americans and plunged the U. S. into World War II.

Morawiecki będzie beneficjantem boomu gospodarczego na świecie

0

Doprowadziło to do zatrzymania wzrostu wynagrodzeń, pomimo wzrostu gospodarczego, spadku bezrobocia, niżu demograficznego.

Reese Witherspoon sued by writer who claims 'Gone Girl' was a rip-off

The suit alleges “striking, substantial and numerous similarities” between “Out of the Blue” and “Gone Girl.“
Reese Witherspoon has been named as a defendant in a lawsuit by a writer who says that the book and movie “Gone Girl” ripped off her own work.
In addition to Witherspoon, who served as a producer on the film, the suit also names “Gone Girl” author Gillian Flynn, director David Fincher, 20th Century Fox Film Corporation and other defendants.
In the suit, filed in federal court in Illinois on Wednesday, Leslie Weller says that she first filed a registration for her work “Out of the Blue” with the U. S. Copyright Office in 2006 and later emailed a copy of it to a script consultant.

The suit alleges “striking, substantial and numerous similarities” between “Out of the Blue” and “Gone Girl,” including that “both focus on a married couple’s relationship. From the reader’s perspective, the wife has been injured or has potentially died in an unexpected incident. The reader learns of the couple’s life together that led up to the incident.”
The suit also says that both works “contain a key twist: As more information about the husband emerges, the likelihood of the of the husband’s guilt increases until it is revealed at the midpoint that the husband was innocent.”
TheWrap has reached out to a representative for Witherspoon and other defendants for comment on the suit.

Nikki Haley casts some doubt on U. S. athletes at 2018 PyeongChang Olympics

0

Haley said sending Americans remains an ‚open question‘ given how tensions remain high in the Korean Peninsula.
Nikki Haley, America’s ambassador to the United Nations, suggested that the United States‘ participation in February’s Winter Olympics in South Korea remains up in the air, while the White House said Thursday that „no official decision has been made“ regarding the games.
Haley was initially asked Wednesday night on Fox News whether sending American athletes was a „done deal“ given the tensions in the region, and responded that the situation is an „open question.“
„I have not heard anything about that,“ she added, „but I do know in the talks that we have — whether it’s Jerusalem or North Korea — it’s about, how do we protect the U. S. citizens in the area?“
Her comments came on the day President Donald Trump announced the U. S. would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel — causing uproar among world leaders and fueling the threat of violent protests.
A spokesperson for the U. S. Mission to the U. N. said on Thursday that Haley’s statements were taken out of context.
„The United States looks forward to participating in the Winter Olympics in the Republic of Korea next year,“ the spokesperson said. „As always, the protection of American citizens overseas is our most important priority. We remain closely engaged with the Koreans and other partner nations to secure the venues as we do every Olympics.“
On Thursday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders cited security considerations when she said going to the Olympics wasn’t set in stone.
But „the goal,“ she said, is for athletes to compete.
Minutes after the daily press briefing ended, Sanders clarified her remarks in a tweet saying that „the U. S. looks forward to participating“ in the Olympics and helping to ensure the venues are secure.
The 2018 Olympics are set to take place in the mountainous and remote region of PyeongChang, roughly 50 miles from the heavily protected North Korean border.
Haley, when asked about the safety of the U. S. delegation, said further conversations are necessary.
„What have we always said — we don’t ever fear anything. We live our lives…. What we will do is make sure we’re taking every precaution possible to make sure that they’re safe and to know everything that’s going on around them,“ Haley added. „So I think that’s something where the administration’s going to come together and find out the best way to make sure they’re protected.“
A U. S. Olympic Committee spokesman, Mark Jones, has said that staging a sports spectacle like the Olympics can be a challenge for any host city, which must contend with an influx of international visitors. He added that American officials were working with organizers and law enforcement ahead of time.
Jones added Thursday: „We have not had any discussions, either internally or with our government partners, about the possibility of not taking teams to the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. We plan on supporting two full delegations in PyeongChang.“
But other countries, including France and Austria, have said they’re willing to sit out these games if safety can’t be guaranteed.
In recent days, North Korea has continued to suggest that war is inevitable as it moves ahead with its missile testing program.
The U. S. this week has run military drills with South Korea by flying dozens of planes in a show of force. The move led North Korea to say in its state-run media that it could escalate the situation „to the brink of nuclear war.“
Some Olympic athletes training for PyeongChang told NBC News in recent weeks that family and friends are increasingly asking what provocations in the Korean Peninsula mean for them. But they said they’re putting their faith in the U. S. Olympic Committee.
„Anywhere we go I wish we didn’t have to worry about what things could happen,“ said Jamie Greubel Poser, who won bronze in the two-women’s bobsled at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia. „We just have to do our best to be aware while staying focused on our priority, which is competing.“

White House announces physical exam for Trump after slurred speech

0

The White House has announced that Trump will undergo the traditional physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in early 2018.
WASHINGTON — President Trump will undergo the traditional physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in early 2018 and make public the results of that checkup, the White House promised on Thursday. Press secretary Sarah Sanders also dismissed what she called “ridiculous questions” about Trump’s health after he seemed to slur some words in a speech a day earlier.
“There were a lot of questions on that — frankly, pretty ridiculous questions,” Sanders told reporters at her daily briefing. “The president’s throat was dry, nothing more than that.”
Her comments came after speculation fueled by Trump’s speech patterns near the end of Wednesday speech in which he formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Sanders also said that Trump would undergo a checkup — “the full physical that presidents go through” — at Walter Reed in “the first part of next year.”
RELATED: Trump seems to have lisp during Jerusalem announcement
And, she said, “those records will be released by the doctor following that.”
Trump, who at 71 is known to be fond of fast food and to shun exercise, has faced questions about his health before. In December 2015, Trump’s campaign released a remarkable letter from Dr. Harold Bornstein — the son of Trump’s longtime physician, Jacob Bornstein — attesting to the candidate’s vigor.
“If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to presidency,” the doctor declared. The statement seemed, on its face, ridiculous — Gerald Ford was a gifted athlete prior to being elected, George W. Bush’s passion for running kept him trim and his heart rate low.
Trump shared his clean bill of health on Facebook, writing that he is “fortunate to have been blessed with great genes.”
“People have been impressed by my stamina, but to me it has been easy because I am truly doing something that I love,” Trump added at the time.
In a September 2016 television appearance on “Dr. Oz,” Trump said he does not work out but considers his speeches to be exercise.
“When I’m speaking in front of 15 and 20,000 people and I’m up there using a lot of motion, I guess in its own way, it’s a pretty healthy act. I really enjoy doing it,” Trump said. “A lot of times these rooms are very hot, like saunas, and I guess that is a form of exercise and, you know?”
The commander in chief’s powers to unleash nuclear armageddon understandably makes Americans concerned about their leader’s health. But some of the greatest U. S. presidents have been quite sick — FDR spent much of his presidency in a wheelchair, a fact largely concealed at the time.
Barack Obama’s 2014 physician’s report noted, declared him “tobacco-free,” but said that he does make “occasional use” of “ nicotine gum .”
And Obama was diagnosed with acid reflux — heartburn, the classic Type-A health issue — and has in the past suffered from Vitamin D deficiency, which can result from getting insufficient exposure to the sun.

Sony has sold over 70 million PS4 consoles, 2 million VR headsets

Sony released some new stats today detailing the progression of sales for its PS4 console and PS VR headset systems. The numbers that matter: 70.6M PS4 consoles, 617.8M PS4 titles, 2M PS VR headsets, 12.2M PS VR titles.
Things appear to moving along rather well in console land, where Sony is almost certainly winning the console wars with Microsoft. Microsoft hasn’t released unit sales numbers since January of this year when it announced that 26 million Xbox One units had been sold. In that time, Microsoft has released an updated version of the system, the 4K-playing Xbox One X. Sony released the souped-up PS4 Pro last year.
Meanwhile, Sony has also made significant inroads on sales of its VR headsets. The company announced in June that the company had sold 1 million headsets. The headset has been given a sort of price drop through the inclusion of a camera that had previously been an additional purchase.
With over 60 million PS4 units sold, the company’s flagship console is rapidly approaching the lifetime sales of the PS3 which sold 70 million units over its entire life cycle. The PS4 first went on sale in North America in November of 2013. The PlayStation 2, the best-selling video game console of all time, sold 155 million units.
